Guitar Heroes Unite on “It Might Get Loud” Movie Poster

7/8/09, 5:29 pm EST

Rolling Stone has your first look at the new poster for the upcoming guitar doc It Might Get Loud, featuring three masters of the six-string: the White Stripes’ Jack White, U2’s the Edge and Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page. Rolling Stone spent time with White and Page at the film’s debut last month at the Los Angeles Film Festival, and we spoke to the trio of rockers about cranking the volume and a potential soundtrack release.

“I need to feel it. I’ve gone through things where I go onstage and the sound guy at sound check comes over and he’ll hold the decibel meter and show it to me while we’re playing — and it’s 127 decibels,” White told Rolling Stone. “That’s not good. And I can’t even tell. If it’s not right there, it feels wimpy, it feels uninspiring.” The doc also explores why the three musicians were driven to learn their craft and digs into their unique creative processes. Plus, “It Might Get Quieter is not a good title for a movie,” joked director Davis Guggenheim, who also helmed Al Gore’s environmental caution film An Inconvenient Truth.

In one It Might Get Loud scene, the three guitarists jam together on the Physical Graffiti scorcher “In My Time of Dying,” while another shows White describing why he prefers damaged instruments to the pristine variety. “I want it to be a struggle,” While tells his cinematic cohorts. Page is a guitar hero. The Edge and Jack White are not in the same realm as Page, Jeff Beck, Clapton or Steve Vai.

respectfulboy111 | 7/8/2009, 9:10 pm EST

this movie looks great

Huey Louis | 7/8/2009, 9:17 pm EST

The Edge is lame.

sweet | 7/8/2009, 11:44 pm EST

The Edge is not lame. He’s original. He transformed what can be done with the guitar. Not many people have done that. He may not play long solos or whatever, but that’s because it’s already been done.

Angorian | 7/9/2009, 12:22 am EST

Page even says Jack White is awesome, listen to the White Stripes cover of Death Letter, that is as good as playing as any I have heard.

ELl | 7/9/2009, 12:36 am EST

The only god here is Page. Like seriously, White and The Edge? They are not God status, bunch of idiots.

Umm what about:
Eddie Van Halen
Slash
Eric Clapton
Satriani
Vai
Jeff Beck
even John Mayer comes before those two in my book.

I’ll only watch this too see Page.

Ed | 7/9/2009, 1:10 am EST

Jack white is far better than Steve vai and better than the edge

Ed | 7/9/2009, 1:13 am EST

Jack white is far better than Steve vai and better than the edge and maybe even better than Jimmy page I mean white plays Bass rhythm and lead and let’s not forget at what makes out of a pice of wood at the begining of the trailer for the movie

Tubthumper | 7/9/2009, 5:55 am EST

The Edge would be screwed without his delay padal!

Tubthumper | 7/9/2009, 5:56 am EST

Pedal even!

GuitarHero | 7/9/2009, 7:04 am EST

The Edge is beyond genius. He creates sounds others can not dream of. He has not taken the lame option of being a Jimi imitator and is a true innovator.

Anonymous | 7/9/2009, 10:01 am EST

ahhhhh…once again…trying to rank artists the way you rank baseball players…there is no scientific way to prove that steve vai is “better” than joan jett.

Kliff | 7/9/2009, 10:15 am EST

The Edge & White were picked to sell tickets. It’s 3 different genereations they are aiming at.
I’ll go see it just to see Page. I don’t mind Edge, either.

C | 7/9/2009, 10:32 am EST

“I want it to be a struggle,” While tells his cinematic cohorts.

musicmaster | 7/9/2009, 10:33 am EST

Ok kids, they’re all good, ok? It doesn’t need to be a pathetic little pissing contest. As Jack Kerouac said, (via Cervantes) “Comparisons are odious.”

To Tubthumper | 7/9/2009, 10:40 am EST

So then, Edge uses the delay pedal better than anyone. Correct?

Chris | 7/9/2009, 10:44 am EST

For all you who are hating on The Edge and Jack White, listen to these specific tracks:

The Edge:
Bullet the Blue Sky
With or Without You
Mysterious Ways

Jack White:
Death Letter
Ball and Biscuit (his best playing?)
Seven Nation Army

All are standout tracks of what they are about.

Rachel | 7/9/2009, 12:18 pm EST

This movie is showcasing three generations of guitar icons. Whether you like them or not, each one of them is an innovative artist.

yea, right! | 7/9/2009, 12:34 pm EST

jack white!? are you kidding me? where’s dave navarro? or patrick walden? or graham coxon? or slash, for that matter?

Deweycox | 7/9/2009, 1:06 pm EST

Page and White are two off the best out there. They may not play as fast or as technical as Vai or Satch, but the riffs they wrote will be remember. Virtuosos they are not, but in fifty years only a handful of people will know who vai or satch are. u2 zepplin and Whites bands will still be all over the place. The edge may not be one of my favs but tons of bands from the last 25 years have been ripping of his techinique.

flyboy | 7/9/2009, 1:44 pm EST

no page = 99.999999% of rock music you hear. period. thats why you dont see slash, vai, satch, eric johnson, or whoever else of that rock guitar ilk.

the edge: he was brave enough to paint outside the lines that page mapped out. his soundscapes shaped generations cinematic music. sure eno helped, but you know when you are hearing the edge.

jack white: to be hopnest, i dont know a lot of his stuff, but i respect him doing something different. or as different as you can be 50 years into this rock and roll thing. i consider jack white to be an innovator in what kind of wild punkish lowfi indie sounding madness one can generate. and make it groovy. and heartfelt.

one could generate a list, likely based on taste, or some kind of fleeting knowledge of who is the real deal in rock. living/dead, whatever, zappa comes to mind as an innovator. no zappa = no vai for instance. but corpses make for bad covers, therefore no ink gets sold.

and truth be told, i would have loved to have seen angus young involved. ah well.

Rachel | 7/9/2009, 2:05 pm EST

I’m posting again to defend Jack White. While he may not be technically better than some other guitarists mentioned on here, he is innovative. He has given himself rigorous standards by which to play, like using old, beat up, out of tune guitars. The White Stripes is a bit of an experiment that he gave himself to see what he could do with only two people and a tri-color theme (his words from an interview). He is experimental, which is what The Edge and Jimmy Page were when they first came on the scene. It’s also what Jimi Hendrix was when he was alive. He was never, technically, the best guitarist, but you can’t deny his ability and influence on music.

Rachel | 7/9/2009, 2:10 pm EST

A very accurate quote from the movie’s director:

“You could find other guitarists that were virtuosos, and you could find other guitarists that are legends, but you may not find three that are all searchers. Each one of them is still searching and still trying to figure out what it means to make music.”

Edge's Headset | 7/9/2009, 2:52 pm EST

From U2’s first album, listen to An Cat Dubh/Into the Heart, Out of Control, I Will Follow, and the Electric Co. for definitive Edge nougaty goodness.

Mike S. | 7/9/2009, 3:15 pm EST

1) Agree with others…ranking artisits is for idiots and 6th graders. I doubt the filmakers were taking shot at any other guitar players for selecting the three they selected.

2) The Edge is undoubtedly a genius. Nobody sounded like him before he came on the scene…and his influence is all over the radio today. Coldplay = The Poor Man’s U2.

3) Jimmy Page. If you could only take one album to a desert island…it might be a Zep album…Page + tha rythym section = nuclear explosion.

4) Jack White is as original as they come, and that is what makes an artist interesting.

RP | 7/9/2009, 4:11 pm EST

Jack White = you must see the white stripes live. unbelievable. You won’t get it unless (a) you see them live (esp after 2005) and (b) you listen to their whole catalog.

Anonymous | 7/9/2009, 8:19 pm EST

3 GREAT guitar players discussing their craft and jammiming together-as a fellow guitar player who knows TRUE talent when he see’s it(all 3 are Searchers,I like that, that is what we do with our guitars after all) I for one will ge in guitar heaven when I see this movie…oh and Ed, Page played bass with the Yardbirds and besides, a bass only has 4 strings, guitars have six and twelve strings and Page has proven himself quite adept at 4,6,and 12.Zeppelin rules!!

Angorian | 7/9/2009, 8:59 pm EST

One last defence for Jake White. In a guitar magazine a few years ago they were interviewing Jimi Page and had asked him what he was listening too, he said the White Stripes.

Snaves | 7/9/2009, 11:14 pm EST

To those who doubt his ability: go to Youtube, watch The Raconteurs play Blue Veins live at Bonaroo 2008. Amazing guitar solo. Jack White isn’t the best guitar player out there. Not by a longshot. But he infuriates me in the fact that he can come up with any single great guitar riff imaginable. The only thing I really might remember about Satch is that Coldplay ripped a song off of him. I will still be humming Seven Nation Army, Cannon, Fell In Love With A Girl, and Death Letter 15 years from now.

The Edge- watch the solo on Bullet the Blue Sky live and forget about it haters.

Page is Page. Anyone who doubts him needs to learn more about music.

Can’t wait for this movie, really happy about the choice of guitarists.

bs | 7/10/2009, 12:40 am EST

this movie is going to be awesome. and everything is a matter of taste. you can’t argue with accomplishment. these people are interesting to TALK TO on top of being good. do you really want to hear vai talk about how he likes hungarian wedding music? vai is amazing, but i can’t remember any of his songs. rock and roll folks.

denzepp58 | 7/10/2009, 8:07 am EST

Recommended Jack White tunes…Catch hell Blues-Little Cream soda-Icky Thump-dead leaves and the Dirty Ground-Death letter,,just to name a few…JW is the best guitarist I have seen since EVH. The fact that Page admires his playing only adds to his credibility. I am not that big of a U2 fan but The Edge is a very good guitar player and while he may not be in the same league as Page and White he definately has his own sound and represents his era well.

chrie | 7/11/2009, 1:53 am EST

You’re telling me that out of anyone else alive out there, they chose The Edge as a Guitar God?

No FUCKIN’ WAY. Terrible

Imp | 7/11/2009, 7:26 pm EST

Let’s stop making this something it’s not. Don’t get me wrong, I would rather see:
Eddie Van Halen
Warren Dimartini
George Lynch
But I’ll at least give this a chance.

LikeAConspiracy | 7/14/2009, 5:04 am EST

Look you guys…this movie is made and done. Just because some of your favorite guitarists aren’t there doesn’t mean you have to talk trash about the thing. This is an an actual look at Jimmy Page. I mean jimmy freakin page. We will get to see him through his POV. Yeah Jack White and that other guy will be their but Jimmy Page…think of Kashmir,Stairway to Heaven, Immigrant Song,Black Dog, and so much more. Im fuckin watching this..

LoopGuru | 7/14/2009, 3:21 pm EST

Could they have a special showing with “The Edge” parts cut out for real music fans? I’ve heard enough of his gimmicky digital-delay chicken-picking to last a lifetime, thank you.

Pepe Silvia | 7/19/2009, 7:10 pm EST

It’s one thing if you’re not a fan of The Edge’s style, but to say he only relies on his delay is absurd. He chooses not to play like other guitarists, but has shown that he can play just as well as anyone. The best example, as mentioned, is the performances of “Bullet the Blue Sky” on ZooTV. He kills that solo. “The Fly” is another great one.

Bill | 7/19/2009, 7:14 pm EST

You can’t rank art..besides we’re talking rock-n-roll kids..if you want technique go check out your local jazz club. The movie is made. If I see one more list of what should of been…i’m going to puke. Grab your popcorn and shut the f up..

lemon | 8/6/2009, 5:00 pm EST

The Edge is a creative & musical virtuoso……the haters can get fucked

lubarzi | 8/11/2009, 10:42 am EST

Hi all,

PAGE is the reason, why this film will be well selling.

LED ZEPPELIN are in all minds.
Trick is to have Page in film.
Nobody ever persuaded him to do it different way he wanted. Anyway this is first film ever with him, is not it?

Fripp | 8/16/2009, 8:27 pm EST

Some years ago in the 90s, in a TV Program about the most important guitar players, Joe Satriani talk about The Edge and his incredible style… And with this Ibanez try to recreate “I will follow”!!!
In Satriani´s words Edge is a guitar genius… Without him, Tom Morello and others doesn´t exist!!!
Best wishes and enjoy this film!!!

AlexGR | 10/22/2009, 8:42 am EST

whatahell is wrong with Ed to think that emo guitar player jack white is better than steve vai??
