Nine Inch Nails Reveal Final U.S. Tour, Small Shows In Three Cities

7/7/09, 4:26 pm EST

It turns out Nine Inch Nails’ Bonnaroo ‘09 set won’t be Trent Reznor’s final U.S. show ever — today the NIN leader announced on the band’s Website new plans to perform a handful of small venue shows in New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles. Nine Inch Nails’ joint tour with Jane’s Addiction and their massive set at Bonnaroo were supposed to be the final curtain calls for Reznor and Co. in the States before the band would “disappear for a while,” but as Reznor writes, “Upon reflection, the NIN/JA tour felt like we had to rush through sets due to a limited allotted set length and many shows were in daylight — it just didn’t feel right to end NIN that way.”

So far, Reznor said Nine Inch Nails will perform at New York’s Bowery Ballroom, Webster Hall and Terminal Five; Chicago’s Aragon Ballroom; and Los Angeles’ Wiltern, the Henry Fonda, Palladium and the Echoplex. “These should be cool, unusual and unique shows and I hope you come out — this is it,” Reznor writes of the final shows, strangely echoing Michael Jackson’s canceled “This Is It!” concerts in London, which were meant to be the King of Pop’s final performances in the U.K.

“They will be informal affairs in medium to small venues with longer set lists, possible special guests, cool openers and other surprises,” Reznor notes of the final shows, adding that they’ll begin around August 22nd, when NIN return from their current European jaunt. Reznor also hinted at a headlining slot at Toronto’s V Fest, saying that the offer to play the Canadian festival “set the idea in motion to play some FUN shows to end this up with. If we can get it together we’ll film these shows, too.”

Full ticket info and concert dates are expected to be announced soon at the band’s official site.

The Aragon isn’t exactly a “tiny club”… rephrase that part… NOW!

I hope this strange coincidence stops right there. Call me paranoid, but lately whenever I hear the music of an artist who’s still alive and there’s an ominous lyric thrown in there, I get worried. Like just recently, I was listening to “Another One Bites The Dust” by Queen, it came out before Freddie was diagnosed with AIDS, and I thought “What a strangely ominous song, it’s as if he’s singing his own self-fulfilling prophecy”. Anyway, it’s been a long day for me considering the Michael Jackson memorial and all, so sorry if everything I said sounds like psychobabble.

brian | 7/7/2009, 10:33 pm EST

no, i mean, this is our last show, uh, i mean shows ever… i think.

if fucking hate this guy.

PHOENIXAMAZON | 7/8/2009, 7:34 am EST

There is a GOD after all.

To Anonymous | 7/8/2009, 9:25 am EST

By comparison to Chicago area venues like the 23,500 capacity United Center, the 18,500 capacity Allstate Arena, or the 28,000 capacity First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre, I think you can safely call the 4,500 capacity Aragon ‘a ‘club’.

Rusty Nails | 7/8/2009, 9:28 am EST

Glad he came to his senses, doing a fair well tour while letting another lesser known band have the headline spot was definitely not the way to go.

chirpie | 7/8/2009, 10:40 am EST

Really Brian? You fucking hate this guy? That bad? The anger swells and billows forth from a man you’ve never met who makes music you hate? By all accounts you must walk down the street and point to random strangers right? “I fucking hate that poodle!” “I fucking hate that cloud! Goddamn that motherfucking cloud! Why won’t you piss some rain for my motherfucking lawn?!?!?!”

Thundercrotch | 7/8/2009, 11:01 am EST

Another One Bites the Dust came out ten years before Freddie passed. He also sang Keep Yourself Alive twenty five years before. Cryptic message searches don’t reveal anything.

Schultz | 7/8/2009, 11:46 am EST

Rusty Nails – were you around in the 90s at all… Jane’s Addiction were the god fathers of Alternative – as it really was in those days. They may not be as popular as NIN today, but they ruled their day!

Jim | 7/8/2009, 11:52 am EST

Goddamn it, stop advertising this! I’d like to be able to get a ticket to these shows dammit!

Anonymous | 7/8/2009, 12:35 pm EST

i wouldn’t worry Jim… Used to be tough to get a NIN ticket, when their tours were a rare occasion. But in the last few years, NIN have super saturated the concert scene. All the casual fans who wanted to see them, have seen them. Only the diehards are left now. You’ll get a ticket.

Anonymous | 7/8/2009, 1:24 pm EST

dude, Trent Reznor just wants to get the message that he dislikes this country across to the masses.

Raindog | 7/8/2009, 3:13 pm EST

Sorry Schultzy… Jane’s Addiction were simply a footnote in rock history… and they owe any success they did have to Nirvana and Pearl Jam. “God fathers??” WTF???

meh | 7/8/2009, 3:14 pm EST

Makes great sense to play small clubs in one of the biggest cities in the country (NY).A city NIN has ignored for 3 straight tours.Dumbass.

Anonymous | 7/8/2009, 4:23 pm EST

Calm down, Meh.

They just played two NYC area shows:

2009/06/06 Holmdel, NJ PNC Bank Arts Center

2009/06/07 Wantagh, NY Nikon At Jones Beach Theater

Close enough!

If you couldn’t drive to either of those shows, within very reasonable distance from NYC, then that’s YOUR problem!

Jays5672 | 7/8/2009, 4:56 pm EST

I like Trent and his music but I’m getting really sick of guys like him and Billy Corgan basically doing a press release for every freaking thought that goes through their head and then inevitably changing plans. It makes them look like douchebags who don’t follow through on anything. If you have an idea, wait until it’s for sure and THEN say something.

Kennedy | 7/8/2009, 5:27 pm EST

There are a handful of bands who appeared to be headed to legendary status, but whose music just does stand the test of time and are now completely irrelevant:

Nine Inch Nails
Smashing Pumpkins
REM

Kennedy | 7/8/2009, 5:28 pm EST

I meant “doesn’t stand the test of time”..

Anonymous | 7/8/2009, 5:53 pm EST

Jane’s Addiction a “footnote”? Wow, there are some real morons on here. Let’s see if you’re still saying that when they waltz into the rock and roll Hall Of Fame!

FERABAD | 7/8/2009, 6:13 pm EST

^^^He didn’t make any “press release”, he just posted it in his website for his fans. I don’t see the problem with that.

And Corgan is probably ruining The Smashing Pumpkins lately, but their 90s albums are still really good. REM have made some of the best albums ever made. And NIN are still one of the best bands in this fuc.ing world.

kathy lake | 7/8/2009, 7:45 pm EST

I think its a shame that all these people could not of told m.j. in person how wonderful he was to the world, it may have made a big difference in his life, it may have saved his life! We should take it and learn from it, tell people you care before they die not after. Rest in Peace M.J. and we will see you when we get there.

Steve | 7/8/2009, 11:00 pm EST

Since Jones Beach was not sold out and the crowd was rather dull I am betting that tickets won’t be so hard to get

liam p-m | 7/9/2009, 1:01 am EST

‘Raindog’, you are an idiot. Maybe before you go about accusing JA of deriving their sound from nirvana and pearl jam, you should do a bit of research.
You would find that Jane’s Addiction had formed years before BOTH OF THOSE BANDS. They had also released albums before both Nirvana and Pearl Jam.
Jesus, doesn’t anyone care about facts here?

I get to know Micheal Jackson in the 70s, around 1978 / 1979 and ever since then he has been my hero. To many people’s surprise, whenever they enter my library and see Micheal’s pictures on my wall, they will ask, “what is Micheal’s picture doing in a pastor’s study room?” and l will say to them “Micheal preached the gospel of Jesus more than any pastors or churches in the world. He preached the message of LOVE, and that is the message of Jesus Christ, that is the Message of the Kingdom of God and that is the Heart of God: LOVE” I love Micheal and he will for ever remain my hero. Sure... | 7/9/2009, 1:39 pm EST

Trent reznor is full of shit and just likes to hear himself talk. Just like he quit social media…… for maybe 4 days.

7887 | 7/9/2009, 2:52 pm EST

I paid 100 buck to see NIN this summer and they opened for Janes. They said it was the Wavegoodbye tour and now they say thats not and this is lol??? I am kind of sick of this. As a NIN fan Trent needs to give truth to his fans. A lot of them went to see NIN as an opening act and paid 100 bucks a ticket b/c they love NIN and wanted to say goodbye and now he takes his word back. Looks like he is doing this for the money and screwing his fans over.

Michael Jackson | 7/9/2009, 3:10 pm EST

Drugs!

Jays5672 | 7/9/2009, 5:16 pm EST

FERABAD, I know I referred to it as a “Press Release” but call it whatever you want. Period, he should just not say anything until it’s set in stone. Whether it be a website announcement or whatever. Just shut the hell up until you know for sure what’s going on. That way he’s not jerking his fans around. I feel bad for the poor saps who had to pay out the ass to see them as an OPENER on the Wave Goodbye tour and are now finding out that that wasn’t actually the end. That sucks.

Alij | 7/9/2009, 7:14 pm EST

NIN was it’s best when Trent stayed out of the media. He used to be kind of aganst the norm and mysterious, and that really worked since he has proven over and over in the past year how much of a fucking dushe he is everytime he sits in front of a keyboard or opens his mouth.

uh | 7/10/2009, 2:10 pm EST

so just exactly how is trent being a douche? I think its fuckin awesome that nin are doing one last round of shows in the US. I saw them back in may during their tour with Jane’s Addiction and they fuckin rocked. Its like all you illegitimate bastards care about these days is what trent is saying, and it pisses you off. SO stop fuckin listening. Just because Rolling Stone like to copy and paste every bands blog on here does not make them press releases or whatever the fuck. He’s informing his fans and thats what he does best. I could give a shit about his opinions, but just like twitter and assholes everyones got one.

dr. hook | 7/10/2009, 2:16 pm EST

whats worse than hearing trent reznor complain about rock music today? hearing ppl complain about trent reznor’s complaints about rock music today. honestly ppl let the man have his views too. if u dont like it then go get yourself a guitar and write music ppl will actually care about and take notice of. cuz unless your name is trent reznor nobody gives a shit about you here.

Akon | 7/11/2009, 10:17 pm EST

yo buy my albums, IMA KONVICT! and you can be one too.

Thank God for visionairies like trent reznor, roger penrose, alex grey, keith black, perry ferrell-they are the newtons, the archimedes, the beethovans, the Da Vinci’s of our time. Their work won’t be truly appreciated like their predecessors…until they are old. But they-not the stodgy (we all know the type)critics-will be the ones whose work is dissected, whose lives will be studied hundreds of years from now. Let these visionairies take time-they are human as weell and have the same needs as everyone else.

I believe it is a personal right to be able to change your mind. Are you the post police?

stable person | 7/13/2009, 5:56 am EST

Most NIN fans feel fucking played because their hero was considered to be this super intelligent, thoughtful guy but turns out to be a really stupid piece of shit. But that’s what you deserve when you put a rock star who pens something like “Big Man with a Gun” on a fucking peddelstool. Mostly on NIN.com fans are explaining, rationalizing, excusing & even applauding every graceless thing he’s done and/or said recently. Not much reality going on there. They’d never cut that kind of slack for someone they actually knew.

Should | 7/13/2009, 9:18 am EST

Reznor should stick to what he has said but whatever. NIN is good shit, I don’t want to see them go away. They should come to MPLS.

Peter K. | 7/13/2009, 2:04 pm EST

I wish Reznor would go away quickly. His music has become stale anf he is not into this tour. Wave goodbye sucker.

VirgoLibra8 | 7/13/2009, 7:29 pm EST

if there was a tournament of concerts for bands, i’d bet on nin to be the champion. those who have never been to a nin show that are on here bashing nin look like uninformed sheep who absord what they are spoon-fed, it’s not trents fault that 99% of the new music coming out these days sucks. he’s just pointing out what a lot of people are thinking when he disses something.

Anonymous | 7/14/2009, 11:05 pm EST

No offense, the money and sales speak for itself. It’s not like NIN is selling tickets on a massive scale like say — U2, Bruce Springsteen, Dave Matthews Band, or dare I mention, Jimmy Buffet. NIN aren’t filling stadiums or arenas (Did NIN ever?) It’s more of an amphitheater vibe these days. As for NIN being a “champion” of bands, well, that depends on how you really look at it. Let’s say three decades from now you want to look back on the most amazing live bands ever. Would NIN be ranked based on such a legendary status or infamy? Again, sort of doubtful. Ego versus quality. Legendary rock stars know how to retire in style and keep their mouths shut about the quality of other artists. They don’t slam people; they embrace the medium. It would be different if he said he were going on HIATUS. But he seems to have this idiocy that everything is so final that he expects people to hang on his every word. Well, with that said, tomorrow, I’m off to Goodwill to donate my NIN CDs. Laterz!

Ian Grant | 7/15/2009, 9:08 am EST

VirgoLibra8, you have your head up your a$$. NIN isn’t an outstanding concert band. You must have been to very few concerts. Reznor hoodwinked his fans and now they are departing like flies. He needs to get lost and fade into obscurity, the sooner the better. His career has gone out with a fizzle instead of a bang.

Huh. | 7/15/2009, 12:54 pm EST

@stable person: Clearly you don’t know what ‘Big Man With A Gun’ means. It’s an important piece of The Downward Spiral.

So yeah it sucks that NIN is stopping touring. I never had the chance to see them live.

worldbewiilis | 7/15/2009, 2:48 pm EST

if you listen to and purchase buffet and springsteen CD’s don’t ever comment again on NIN. unbelievable – you truly do have a head like a hole.

Anonymous | 7/15/2009, 11:15 pm EST

Whatchoo tawkin’ ’bout, Wiilis? Doh! Why slam people just because they are out of the angry-fan NIN phase? You mean most NIN fans can’t listen to other music genres? Dude. Stop what your shoveling. Music brings people together, but hey, some musicians become LAME and isolate their fan base. That’s the thing that irritates me about most, if not all, NIN fans. You expect 100% loyalty when there’s other music out there to be discovered. Sarcasm, cynicism and hypocrisy is a wonderful thing, eh. Relate, don’t hate. Think about the fans who are in their 20s, 30s, 40s, and egad maybe their 50s, who are following this man around city to city, spending all their hard earned monies…just to display a few lithographs on their walls with the presumption that their “idol” was really worth all of that expense. One concert was enough for me. I’d rather go see Tool or Queens of the Stone Age or Warped Tour artists. Fans are paying customers. We have the freedom of choice to like what we want, when we want. And if the musician isn’t providing what we paid for, then we have the privilege of going elsewhere to satisfy our music needs. “Unbelievable” LOL Yeah, Dude. Reznor needs to get off using Haiku stanzas to write his lyrics and come up with better complex tunes instead of loops and simplistic guitar riffs.

JJK | 7/16/2009, 3:11 am EST

There are celebs with far more clout and a much larger following than Reznor and I’m sure they get their fair share of criticism. Many celebs are even on Twitter. The difference is, they can take it like a big boy or girl, and he can’t because he’s an emotional cripple who sits around all day reading what everyone says about him on the net. He can talk shit about everyone else, but when someone has something to say about him, he runs crying to his flying monkeys. He’s always attempting to control the interwebz. FAIL.

Music LISTENER | 7/17/2009, 6:53 pm EST

For all you a**holes trashing Trent Reznor, you don;t know the first thing of what you are talking about. what he has done and what he doing has changed music forvever, what the fuck have you done? thats right, nothing… Trent Reznor is 110% correct about music today and it will be a sad moment the day he quits. there is no talent today, go ahead and suck down your britney and dave fucking mathews, talk about people full of horse shit! Trent reznor can actually write, play and PRODUCE his own music. much like the composers of past era’s who did it all WITHOUT auto fucking tune. so you idiots that figured out how to log on to the INTERNET can blow the rest of us FANS

djshelter | 7/20/2009, 5:57 am EST

Hey leave Britney Spears out of this!

Axl | 7/31/2009, 11:43 am EST

so whats Rob Finck gonna do? he can’t go back to Guns N’ Roses now cus Axl Rose called in Dj Ashba. So i guess he’ll just have to find a new band :(

Marcus Jello | 9/4/2009, 10:54 am EST

Best to vent and forget. I used to have so much to say to Reznor. Now I all I could say is fuck you.
