New Reviews: The Jayhawks’ Anthology, LMFAO

7/7/09, 6:51 pm EST

Michael Jackson’s catalog is dominating the charts, but a handful of new releases are hitting stores this week, including the Jayhawks’ Music from the North Country: The Jayhawks Anthology, which collects the greatest hits and rarities of the underrated Minnesota country rockers. “One headline about the Jayhawks at their prime read ‘What if you made a classic, and no one cared?’ ” Rolling Stone’s Will Hermes writes in his four-star review of the collection. “The Midwest country rockers have made a few in their 23 years, to less notice than they deserved; those discs are cherry-picked for this note-perfect set.” The set is available in a multitude of formats: a 2CD set with 20 hits and 20 previously unreleased tracks and the deluxe edition that features a bonus DVD of the band’s videos and some live performances.

Also out this week is the debut disc by Hollywood electro-duo LMFAO, Party Rock. Sky Blu and Redfoo, the son of Motown founder Berry Gordy, bust out the brainless beats like a more sophomoric version of the Black Eyed Peas, so while semi-hit singles “I’m From Miami Bitch” and “Shots” are fun the first couple spins, over the course of 15 songs the “brain rigor mortis sets in, and we don’t mean the good kind,” Jon Dolan writes in his two-and-a-half star review of the album. Sample lyric: “Grandma’s cookin’ breakfast, she makes pancakes the best/Check my MySpace, and I got a lot of friend requests.” Advance with caution.

The blonde girl is NOT Avril Lavigne. The blonde girl is one of the guitar players you see in the video that was taken of MJ’s last dress rehearsal.

I agree 100% w/ Jenny. And, as a matter of fact, JUST got through making a similiar comment on another blog about how these idiots who deliberately look up info on MJ’s death and, then post stupid comments about how sick they are of all the coverage. I mean, how stupid can you be to do that? I guess they just want attention. Anyway, I didn’t know that boy came forward last wk. and admitted that he lied for the money. Instead of airing that, the media wants to hide that & keep the lies alive and make up new stories about MJ being a drug addict. Disgusting

There is a big difference between being an iconic entertainer and a hero. What about Martin Luther King, Gandi, Desmond Tutu, the plotoon leader that led his men in Vietman without a single soldier dying, the single mom raising her kids to be productive members of society, the “Best Generation” that preserved our democracy so that you can listen to whatever you want on the radio? We are sending the wrong message to young people, MJ was no hero, he wrote good music and danced. So, lets keep this in presceptive, recognize the real heros in your life!!!

i think mj was the king of pop and that is it was a great entertainer but you canot put the KING ELVIS down ELVIS did it all in the movies and on stage and gave away alot of cars and donations when michael was in diapers. He was a great dancer you can”t take that away from him he was a better dancer than Elvis but he was young and not overweight. But to us older people that remember ELVIS he was the KING of ROCK N ROLL and no one can take that away from him.But you have alot of kings out there u have james brown, fred astair, bb king, paul mcarthy, mick jagger, chuck berry and so on.we’ll miss you mj rest in peace.

I am thrilled the Jayhawks are back together and hope they come to central Florida. Two glaring omissions from the anthology: Two Hearts and Stumblin’ Through the Dark.
Their best music is still to come!
