Million-Dollar Michael Jackson Domain Names for Sale On eBay

7/7/09, 11:18 am EST

Photo: Hogan/Getty
Michael Jackson fans searching online for memorabilia in the wake of the pop icon’s death have no doubt turned to eBay, where hundreds of thousands of Jackson-related items are up for auction. Buttons, posters, autographs, LPs, ticket stubs, magazines, tapestries, and more are up for grabs, but the highest-priced King of Pop items on eBay aren’t keepsakes — they’re domain names, sold in bundles of 12, 20, 50, and even 72, or, if you’re like “nini4me2003″ and you’re hawking a name as strong as OfficialMichaelJacksonMemorial.com, as single sites.

A seller with the handle “corvette2006,” who has a perfect feedback rating and was called by one customer a “first-rate eBayer,” is trying to unload KingofPopsDeath.com, along with MichaelJacksonDied.com, MichaelJacksonArtist.com, RestInPeaceKingofPop.com, and a host of morbidly-titled domains. Meanwhile, “bobinrobinbur” is selling seven domains, including MoonwalkingMichael’s .com, .info, .net, .org, and .us. The seller bought the domain, initially, “as a tribute to him because he is now really walking on the moon.” For $21 million, “you can now own a piece of history in his honor.”

The strange thing about these listings is how similar they all sound. All pretty much bear the same unusual starting bid: $21 million. Of course, most sellers admit they’ll entertain all serious offers in their actual listings, some won’t. A few sellers are offering a “Buy Now” option. That price tag? A cool $100 million. All of them, too, are either “One-Of-A-Kind” or “Great investments” with “MASSIVE $$ POTENTIAL!” And most, but not all, offer free shipping.

If you’re in the market for Jackson domains, you can own 12, being sold by one eBayer who claims in his listing that if he doesn’t sell them, he’d like to launch MJsMemorial.com as a social-networking site, with the help of the Jackson family and Sony Records, of course. Again, he’ll part with it for $21 million. Also on the market are NeverlandRanchAndMuseum.com, TheCompleteMichaelJackson.com, MichaelJacksonTop10.com, TheMichaelJacksonThriller.com, and MichaelJosephJacksonTributeTour.com. More disturbing titles like MichaelJacksonsAddiction.com and MichaelJacksonDrugProblem.com are also available.

@Chris:
Don’t be so sure it’s Americans who are selling the TLDs; my bet is most of them are from the UK, Germany, HK, Asia, etc….

Josh | 7/7/2009, 2:09 pm EST

I would not pay 21 cents for anything related to this freak

Anonymous | 7/7/2009, 3:05 pm EST

Awesome Josh! Now go jump in front of a bus, you awesome guy!

Trelawney Maximus | 7/7/2009, 4:15 pm EST

I can’t believe how sick some people are, trying profit off of Michael’s death. These are the same people that bashed him when he was alive that are now making money off his back. If you’re able to pay your rent and feed your kids tonight as result of selling memorial tickets and stupid domain names on eBay, thank Michael Jackson. His pain and misery was your gain.

@overdue:

It is most DEFINITELY Americans. The rest of the world LOVED Michael because they didn’t swallow the lies that the media tried to shove down their throats as they successfully did with us.

I Bought A Domain Name OfficialMichaelJacksonMemorial .com.
I think it’s cool.

MichaelJacksonsAlbums.Net | 7/8/2009, 11:29 am EST

Still, many of us are developing memorials to him, but at the same time have our domain names available for sale. I am going to use some of mine to build a video memorial, but still I will be selling MichaelJacksonsAlbums.Net, MichaelJacksonMemorialVideo.Co m, and a few others that are great for searches including Michael-Jacksons-Music.Com and King-Of-Pop-Album.com. I am building a memorial site with one of these domains but the rest are for sale and do have great potential for anyone that wants to build a memorial to michael jackson for foundation and for profit. Its not a big deal, we all want to memorialize because we all loved his MUSIC! no matter what, but I honestly wouldnt mind if someone made money off of me dead or alive, I mean imagine how amazing a person has to be, to be able to profit even in death off their name !! RIP MICHAEL JACKSON!!!

dodging bullets | 7/8/2009, 7:18 pm EST

Respect for the king. But to tell the truth: mainstream sucks. I´m interested in the other side of the moon. therefore i registered http://www.thekinkofpo p.com and http://www.kinko fpop.com let´s see what happens.

DiSi2009 | 7/9/2009, 9:38 am EST

Well, in fact I am one of those people who try to make some proft out of MJ websites.. why not? If some potential buyers are willing to pay for it… Anyway, I was creativ enough to reserve some real logical adresses as michael-jackson-from-heaven (com and de) the-michael-jackson-story-onli ne michael-jackson-reloaded michael-jackson-world michael-jackson-fanclub-planet aso aso aso. I am sure some “fans” would like to have them… and I do not want 21 Million for them…. (if I think about it… why not?)

sissywolf | 7/9/2009, 5:00 pm EST

MichaelJacksonLivesForever.org and MichaelJacksonLivesForeverNow. com
Say it best because in our hearts he will live forever. These domain names are availible on ebay, to anyone that has the knowledge to build a memorial website.
REST ALWAYS IN PEACE MICHAEL WITH LOVE…..

Just an humble opinion: Maybe Michael Jackson was a great and generous man. I hope he was a good father. I really wish he wasn´t a childmolester, For sure he was a great artist. And damn sure he was a genius in playing the money-game. He converted himself into a highly efficient artificial character with at least one big objective: Earning a tremendous daily pile of money to financiate an eccentric and wasteful lifestyle. You really think this guy, sitting on his cloud in heaven now, would blame some venturer, trying to earn some bucks out of curious domainnames – including his name? As far as I realized ,Mr. Jacko never made a secret out of his luxury-obsession. I guess I´ll build him a virtual monument for this frankness. Either on jacksonmonument.com or on thejacksonmonument.com or would themichaeljacksonmonument.com be the right place?

Teahupoo | 7/9/2009, 10:10 pm EST

I have seen some of the morbid and disrespectful domain names.

Personally, I look at products that can be sold.

AEG and others are planning to sell video and DVDs of the dress rehearsals therefor I bought:

MichaelJacksonDressRe hearsals.com
MichaelJacksonDre ssRehearsalDVD.com
MichaelJack sonDressRehearsalVideo.com

Travis | 7/9/2009, 11:01 pm EST

I saw one website michaeljacksonobit.com that is listing some of the names that are on Ebay. Chances are that one was going to sold on Ebay and they just gave up.

Michael Jackson Domain Names | 7/11/2009, 9:12 am EST

Some of those domains being sold make no sense to me. Why would you create a domain name that someone would’nt type in a search engine?
The best one i have seen yet, that actual comes up in google is:

MichaelJacksonHitRecord s.com

MJ Fan | 7/11/2009, 11:59 am EST

http://www.michaeljackson1958-forever .com

Also on Ebay

Think this is a great domain, because he will live forever!

Losers | 7/13/2009, 7:10 am EST

Most of these people will up losing money and in one year’s time, most of these domains will expire without being renewed.

tom | 7/13/2009, 11:39 am EST

the best ones i saw that would truly be million dollar domains are the date of MJs passing. After all Elvis and John Lennons Deaths are ingrained in our memories.

june25th2009.com and 25thjune2009.com for that reason have been the best ive seen apart from michaeljacksonmemorial.com

true domain that would show respect and remembrance to MJ

Jonas | 7/13/2009, 1:23 pm EST

I like michaeljacksonobit.com, I think it’s funny;0
I was on Ebay this morning and saw couple that I like
Top10michaeljackson.com and jackson5ivedirectory.com

Al so, one that I find very interesting is michaeljacksonguru.com asking 20Million. a very expensive for a guru.

Why? | 7/13/2009, 1:41 pm EST

Here is what I don’t understand.
Why are these listings (Michael Jackson Domain Name on Ebay) starting at $21 Million.
Seriously!
Who is willing to spend that much money for a domain name?

Mark | 7/13/2009, 2:23 pm EST

Some prices are just a bit too crazy. I agree that it’s an investment but who has $21 Million ???

I’ve seen this one, where it’s 12 MJ Domain names for around $81,000 or so.
If I had to invest on MJ Domains I would go for a package like that, keep my fav’s and sell the others.

Another interesting name | 7/13/2009, 11:46 pm EST

This one make my day.
“wekilledmichaeljackson. com”
and “wekilledmichael.com”

Askin g price, not much
only $ 21 Million!

Dan | 7/14/2009, 1:54 am EST

This web domain http://www.michaeljacksonkingofpopliv esforever.com I think is cool because he is the king of pop and lives forever

MikeZar | 7/14/2009, 3:54 am EST

Well it looks like Michael Jackson Greatest Hits has a New social Network website.
MichaeljacksonGreates tHits.com

Trademarks Michael Jackson | 7/14/2009, 11:27 am EST

From what I have read, Michael Jackson had his name Trademark and registered.
What will happen with all those Michael Jackson Domain Name on Ebay.

Wowzer | 7/14/2009, 11:59 am EST

I am really surprised that this domain has not been bought! michaeljacksonslifetimetribute .com
Seems this says it all and with respect!

MJJ fan | 7/14/2009, 12:28 pm EST

I think offering the domains for people to build on is fantastic! I have been watching the names on ebay and there are a few that are definitely tops- The Staples center ones and the best that says it all, agreeing with the first post is michaeljacksonslifetimetribute .com. It will provide fans with just that- a lifetime tribute. The cost? Can easily be recooped by advertising on a number 1 site! I look forward to seeing this site finished! And easy to google!

BusinessAdvantages | 7/14/2009, 12:44 pm EST

There are domain names for MJJ for the fans and domain names for businesses. Large corp. can afford to purchase the million $$ sites and still make a profit. MJJ will always be in fans hearts. This is as profitable as Elvis was. One company made over 9 million on a million dollar domain name purchase within 2 years. The lifetime tribute is a good investment as well as some of the larger tagged names. An investment that will not lose.

Curious | 7/14/2009, 11:44 pm EST

What was the companies name that made 9 million dollars over a 1 million dollar domain – or is this just all hype and hearsay?

Michael jackson Domain Name | 7/15/2009, 1:32 pm EST

went to look at Ebay this morning
many listed for $ 21 mil
aren’t these seller afraid of a lawsuit?

michaeljacksonmusic | 7/16/2009, 12:48 am EST

Want to find the words to michael jacksons song called you are not alone

drpepper | 7/16/2009, 5:14 am EST

All these domain names that are on ebay will most definitely go nowhere. Everyone claims millions of hits here, huge potential. Yes on google Michael Jackson name will pull up these results but anyone of these names on here or on ebay are not marketable names really. Ok some like michaeljacksonlivesforever.com could be a good site for fans but no money maker. The one that got attention at the beginning like inmemoryofmichaeljackson would be good for a company doing commercials selling memorabilia/collectibles because its relevant right now. I also like foreverkingofpop.com and they have stuff there (social/fans). Other than that most are a joke or a name that will not resonate from a marketable stand point. Here’s two free domain names that are still available today that you can grap right now from godaddy michaeljacksonguitarhero.com or michaeljacksonrockband.com…. So right now you can check and they should be available. Guitar Hero probably would not be a good fit and my sister says nor would Rockband. But I believe that Rockband could be made to fit and would create excitement for the the users. And make some good money for the estate. So if you have the name and they come out with this, you think I can make money off this because my name is it. You could have links to sell the product but with the internet and google, you do not need these silly names or a name that has MJ name, you just need good relevant content and SEO to make your site come up. A good name can be marketable but MJ-kingofpop.info or MJTheKingofPop.net or .com or whatever, people will not remember these. And companies will not pay that type of money for a silly name because if they did need a name it has to be solid and memorable. Like MichaelJacksonTheKingofPop .com or MichaelJacksonKingofPop.com or just MichaelJackson.com. Type in CocaCola.net or Pepsi.biz, you will not see these companies but they own these but they will not put that name or even link it to their site because people do not go there really, but they want to protect their image thats all. MichaelJacksonTheKingofPop .com thats a marketable name. KingofPopMichaelJackson.co m is too. Not one single domain has truly sold for more than $5,000 if even that, because people want to think yes, I got the greatest name. And actually it may be legally fine to have Michael Jackson name in a domain name because he is a dead celebrity now (RIP Michael You are the King)and the cyber squatter law that bILL cLITON put into law that protected celebrities trademark including the related domain name (but only living, except a dead president) He did this because truly a domain name can not be tardemarked per see even though icann does govern theirselves in these matters partially. Do’nt you think Ebay would of took them down if there lawyers thought they might infringe on a trademark. But actually having the cd cover picture with listing would be illegal but no one has claimed a issue on that part yet. I guess.

MJ Domain Name | 7/16/2009, 10:32 am EST

I have read somewhere that http://www.michaeljackson the legend.com sold for $ 2 million, http://www.remembertheking.com sold for $ 1 million and couple of MJ Domain name sold around $ 5K – $20K
http://www.inmemoryofmichaeljackson. com sold for $10 million at the beginning, but the buyer couldn’t come up with the money so it went back on Ebay again twice, not sure if still available.

Many Michael Jackson domain names on Ebay doesn’t make sense to me.
Personally, I can not see anyone spending $ 10-$20 Million for a domain name that they cannot make any profits long term.
Fan pages or remembers Michael Jackson can only go so far.
On the other hands, I have seen few that can have a huge potential (business wise)

http://www.Michael Jackson memorabilia.com (not sure if it’s still available)
Another one that I can see a huge potential is http://www.Top10 Michael Jackson.com

If I were in a business, I would buy this one (the asking price is a bit high)
There are so many way to profits from this name. Think about company, music stores, book stores or any stores that carry everything Top10 Michael Jackson, this site can be use as a hub and listed or link to those companies or store around the world that are willing to pay to increase their business or they can sell top 10 items themselves on the site.
With the right web layout it has a big earning potential.

The other one that I saw http://www.michaeljacksoncollectables .com, this one has a similarity to
http://www.Michael Jackson memorabilia.com. Again there are enough markets for both I think

There are Domain names for business and there are Domain names for fan site both are listed on Ebay.
For business, it’s an investment and if you can afford it, in the long run, you can make profits out of it
For Fan sites, well I am not sure how you can make profits though. Spending $ 21 million on a fan site for me is quite far fetch.
(just my two cents;0)

Ken | 7/19/2009, 9:38 pm EST

There are only a handfull of MJ domain names that are available that will make income. The majority of these domain names will decline in value as the current interest and media hype fades into distant memories. inetbrokerage.com can help those who are serious about buying the correct domain name.

Tyler | 7/19/2009, 11:51 pm EST

Other than the official Michael Jackson domains owned by MJ, Sony & AEG, the best alternative web domain that is memorable and marketable that is not owned by any of the above companies/artist that could be used by companies that have a indirect interest in being associated w/ MJ would be http://www.MichaelJacksonTheKingofPop .com

Tyler | 7/20/2009, 12:01 am EST

Last thing about http://www.MichaelJacksonTheKingofPop .com
Pepsi could use this site as a off shoot site that shows relevant videos of the late Michael Jackson performing Pepsi commercials and sort of be a tribute to MJ and what he in essence began in the making of mega star celebrity endorsements that continue today. It was the Jackson Five group whom originally approached Coca-Cola that turned them down and they then went to Pepsi. Pepsi-Cola could have a link to Pepsi and also work with the RocknRoll Hall of Fame and have a link to them as well. Just my thoughts. Wish I owned this domain name. RIP Michael 1958-2009.

Shawn | 7/21/2009, 12:46 pm EST

Not sure how many, if any, will actually sell for high, but I’d imagine the one’s that are actually (potentially) profitable into the future would be good. Something regarding Michael Jackson’s Life or a domain referencing one of the big tributes (i.e. Staples Center, London or Las Vegas) might go for a bit. Also, anything regarding a new album or video could sell and be used as a marketing, promotional or “parked” domain. The funny thing is, someone could make a huge amount selling it on eBay, but the winning bidder could make so much more in the future depending on the name and how they choose to manage it. I don’t see any seriously going for 20+ million, but if the name is right, I could see 1 mill being a wise investment. Interesting, very interesting.

Jono | 7/22/2009, 7:14 am EST

The reason why people are asking for $21 million for these domain names is that they can!

I checked a few and while one ebayer was asking for $21 million he/she did admit to getting serious offers of $25,000 but wanted a little more.

Another reason could be that if they put a high selling price they get to the top of the list when people search for “highest first” items while “realistic” priced ones are lost somewhere in the pile.

I wouldn’t get hyper about it prices (of anything) usually find their own level.
