Los Angeles Mayor Asks For Donations To Fund Michael Jackson Memorial

Michael Jackson’s family is currently joining a large motorcade — complete with a SWAT team escort — from the Forest Lawn Cemetery to the star’s memorial service at Los Angeles’ Staples Center. There’s no question the star-studded Jackson memorial service is a costly endeavor for the cash-strapped city of Los Angeles. Dozens of L.A.’s busiest roadways are closed off, massive screens have been erected to provide fans with a view of the ceremony outside the Staples Center and hundreds of additional police officers have been deployed for the event. As a result, mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has asked fans to give tax-deductible donations to the city of Los Angeles to help cover the roughly $3.8 million necessary to make the memorial service and all the security involved a reality, My Fox L.A. reports.

(The Michael Jackson memorial: photos from the scene.)

The donations would help “the public safety resources needed to ensure his memorial remains safe, orderly and respectful,” the Mayor’s Office said. Fans are asked to give money to a Paypal account established to help raise funds (The link, posted on Villaraigosa’s Twitter, is currently down.) AEG Live, the concert promotion company behind Jackson’s This Is It! shows at London’s O2 Arena — who are helping plan the memorial service — have also been asked to pick up some of the bill. AEG Live also owns the Staples Center, which served as host to Jackson’s This Is It! rehearsals.

Jackson’s memorial service comes at a tough financial time for the California City. Last month when the Los Angeles Lakers won the NBA Championships, the city was unable to scrounge up enough cash to hold a traditional victory parade, instead opting for a celebration at the Forum. Half of that $2 million tab was reportedly paid for by AEG Live.

According to the Los Angeles Times, nearly 3,200 officers will be deployed to make sure the Jackson memorial runs smoothly throughout the city of Los Angeles. During a briefing with law enforcement officials, LAPD Deputy Chief Earl Paysinger said the number of officers being used for the Jackson memorial is more than the city utilized for the 1984 Olympics, saying that event 25 years ago “pales in comparison to what we have assembled today.”

i will miss him so much and i love him so much you will always be in my heatr and for ever king of pop

We have been invited to Los Angeles to celebrate Michael Jacksons life-bring your host/hostess gift as you would to any event you are invited to. At least 1.6 million fans small contribution can cover this event and honor this man who we claim to love.

CiLeah | 7/7/2009, 12:33 pm EST

The city has noney to pay for Michael Jackson’s funeral and my family doesn’t have health insurance. Shame on the Jackson family for wanting me to pay for this funeral. Nobody helped me with the expenses when my children’s father passed.

Me | 7/7/2009, 12:36 pm EST

Asking for donations from cash strapped Angelenos for a memorial service for someone who’s made hundreds of millions in his career and will make even more than that after his death is embarrassing…I’m not knockin’ Michael…just the Mayor…..Have Jesse and Sharpton pitch in…they got so much free press this week and I don’t have the slightest idea WTF they do for a living. Does anyone???

Mary | 7/7/2009, 12:42 pm EST

Due to the City’s current financial crisis and the fact that employee’s are losing their jobs, I think that AEG and the estate should have to bear the costs of this event.

Joe | 7/7/2009, 12:42 pm EST

The Jackson Family or Michael’s estate should cover the cost…not the tax payers of Los Angeles. They should have had this up in Santa Barbara.

Rich | 7/7/2009, 1:00 pm EST

I would have donated a Franklin if I was a ticket lottery winner… If everybody that won the tickets did… that would be a nice gift back… but when I see the excess like the Swat Team! Give me a break! Is this a test to see how much the city can waste?

Madina Ashimova | 7/7/2009, 1:06 pm EST

After Michael Jackson has donated close to 500 million dollars to charity and saving children, trying to save our world to make it a better place for us and our children, he certainly deserves to have us contribute a small donation to be laid to rest. I don’t understand people who complain about it. He deserves that much!!! If the State doesn’t have the money at the moment it’s ok, that’s why we are here. And I will donate what ever I can so he can be laid to rest. The State and his family are doing this for US. So we can do it for them!!!

I am a fan and I will miss Michael. However, I think it is ridiculous to ask for financial contributions. The Jackson family is a wealthy family. They should foot the bill.

Sabrina | 7/7/2009, 1:17 pm EST

The City is asking for donations. Really? Nice that they have calculated expenditures they are incurring as a result of a mass influx of tourists, business, and major media attention. All of this is generating revenue for the city, via businesses and their taxes. I tend to believe that if that figure were calculated it would reveal a profit to the city.

Rest in peace Micheal.. we got ur back!

geoff groedner | 7/7/2009, 1:22 pm EST

LA paying the tab for all the security, traffic control and, of course, the SWAT team, should edge CAH LEE FAW NYA right into Chapter 11. Why not? Isn’t it the land of the fruits & nuts?

Linda | 7/7/2009, 1:26 pm EST

The Jackson family should foot the bill on this one! Apparently MJ’s record sales have skyrocketed, they can use some of the profit from that.

Oscar | 7/7/2009, 1:38 pm EST

What a joke. The City of Los Angeles should have told the Jackson Family, “You’re on your own, but if you foot the bill, the City will provide resources”.

Disgusted | 7/7/2009, 2:02 pm EST

This whole thing has been over-the-top and ridiculous. The tickets should not have been free, and the proceeds could have covered the cost. The past two weeks have been a sad commentary on where our hearts are. Millions spent on an intangible soon-to-be memory, when the city is broke and people are jobless. Where are our priorities, people????

Dee, Seattle wa. | 7/7/2009, 2:04 pm EST

please let us know where and how to send a donation.

i think MJ had enough in his account to cover this event. why should the major and the family members asking for donation to fund his (Micheal Jackson) memorial service? is a shame on the famaily and the major after all Macheal jackson left behind they are disgracing him as if he died a poor man!

wow, almost $4 million for his memorial… sounds like MJ when he was still alive and on an antique shopping spree (even though he was already deeply in debt).

boy | 7/7/2009, 2:33 pm EST

may his soul rest in peace. amen!i will willy miss u king of pop. but is a shame for the family and the major to ask for contribution for his memorial service. micheal jackson was a wealthy man who helped thousends of people all over the world in one way in other and the family can not give him a befitting memorial service out of his wealth left behind than is a shame!

sy | 7/7/2009, 2:54 pm EST

btw, fact check. the laker parade was at the LA Coliseum not the Great Western Forum. and that was always the plan, it wasn’t a last ditch effort because they couldn’t get enough money together…

Curtis | 7/7/2009, 3:13 pm EST

awwww geeeeeez……..i’m canadian, with all that i read, i’m down for helping out jackson, i grew up with his music, he gave me thriller, beat it, billie jean……i’ll always remember micheal, if i was there i’d donate, but my current sitiuation only call’s that I can only say i’m sorry for his loss, i was choked that day, lump in my throat, it was worse than the twin tower’s……..it still is…..R.I.P Micheal…….

she-lah-lee | 7/7/2009, 3:14 pm EST

What a bunch of morons!!!

What a bunch of morons!!!

I just heard that someone hocked her furniture to go from NC to LA for the funeral—without a ticket.

And Sharpton wants a stamp for MJ NOW. I would rather have a block of 4 stamps with Jim Jones, Jeffrey Dahmer, John Wayne Gacy, and some other useless bum.

And Sheila Jackson Lee says he “stopped and healed people.”

Maybe Nancy P Mousemeat will add to the next stimulus bill to pay for this?

Why not have folks who made money off Michael’s talent pay for this?

Delboy | 7/7/2009, 3:26 pm EST

Incredible!….they are asking the common man to foot the bill for his funeral?…MJ has a golden casket, his family drive around in Bentleys and are incredibly wealthy, any one of whom could afford to pay this bill without a dent in their bank accounts. How tasteless to expect average struggling Joe public to foot the bill for a wealthy megastar. No disrepect to the grieving family but they, and the many people who made fortunes from MJ should be paying for this, if they want such an event they should pay for it. My father was the greatest man who ever lived, we would never have asked people to pay for his funeral!….it is in very bad taste to ask people to pay for this and if someone is foolish enough to do so then I feel sorry for them, whilst the family has such a massive amount of wealth, especially now, despite his depbt they have acquired huge sums of money.

Crying poor the City cut employees’ hours & salaries by 10%, issued Pink Slips, cut services to residents while raising fees & taxes, then they shell out $4,000,000 for this circus. (*note – if they say $4M it’s probably closer to $8M)

If the City wanted to “…ensure his memorial remains safe, orderly and respectful…” then they shouldn’t have held it in downtown and turned it into a circus.

I just don’t understand some people after all the money and charities MJ has given to why can’t people donate to honor and remember him. He has given more than just money he has given us a life of music that will live in our hearts forever. That itself is enough for me. Thank u Mike for your kind heart, your endless talent, your desire to heal our world and bring all people together. May you rest in peace you will always be in my heart forever.

Mayor of LA should be impeached. All those Millions spent just for a pop singer that NOT ALL cared for his music!!! Especially with teachers being laid off, school classes cut, ppl loosing their jobs, health care (should I go on?).Not to mention recently paying another million for a parade so all those who rampaged local businesses and property got to see the Lakers. Where are our priorities? Maybe the mayor should pay for this elaborate and very expensive display from out of his pocket. And on a last note, wouldn’t this money be better spent celebrating the memory of all those whom made the ultimate sacrifice defending our nation and all the men and woman in uniform stationed all over the world?

asking for donations is one of the funniest things i’ve ever heard.you want me to donate for a child molester funeral.this is a joke, please tell me yes……..

Lana | 7/7/2009, 4:18 pm EST

Asking fans for donations to cover costs is almost as funny as the memorial itself and the people (strangers) who attend it, but they deserve it. Reading about all this “weeping” and “wailing” is hilarious – weeping and wailing from people who don’t even know this looney toon man who wore lipstick, eyeliner and wigs yet denied he had a thing for boys. As a human, it’s sad that he died, as it would be for any other human, but the rest is pure baloney, including his family members with their crocodile tears. What a pity!

CynthiaSTinHouston | 7/7/2009, 4:20 pm EST

Zorka, you’re not speaking for me because I haven’t cried one tear for MJ. Sure, I’m very familiar with his music, but how can I cry when I didn’t know the guy. You have to bust out laughing when you see all these people crying over him when they never even knew him! Hahahahah! Too funny…..

Lana | 7/7/2009, 4:24 pm EST

Oh Roz in Philly – you’re just utterly laughable. How can you love someone when you NEVER KNEW HIM?????? Hahahahahah. Getta’ life!

JE | 7/7/2009, 4:25 pm EST

In a state where most non working people expect to receive everything for free, you expect donations?

If you people in politics would try working instead of spending the money of the workers of California then you wouldnt be in this mess.

Here’s an idea, make the illegals pay for it! Its time they put something back for all the goodies I have to pay on their behalf for their well being.

Mr. Mayor,
You should be ashamed of yourself. The Jackson Family needs to pay for the funeral. They can well afford it. You city and state is so far in debt it is unfair to expect the unemployed, struggling citizens of your city to pick up the tab. I know here in New England we take care of our own

Here is a great idea, why don’t you send the bill to Mr. “O” at the White House and arrange for the printing machines at the government printing office to work 10 minutes overtime. That should just about cover the expenses.

It has to work better then asking for a handout.

What a load of garbage! What happened to pursuing the promo company to fund the security for the event? Angelenos need to really use their intelligence in the next election so thy don’t elect a bunch of short bus drop outs to manage their economy. This memorial service is a PRIVATE event not a public one. Is anyone surpirsed at all why LA, and CA for that matter, can’t pay its bills? Where’s the shame on the part of the elected? The fine folks of LA deserve much better.

What a JOKE | 7/7/2009, 6:23 pm EST

Gee, how much $$$ does the Jackson family and the concert promoters (AEG) stand to make off of a slick “Michael Jackson Memorial” DVD that we know will be put together very soon? They’ll all profit off the memorial, while the city – meaning, the PEOPLE, the TAXPAYERS, (plus anyone dumb enough to contribute their own $$) – is stuck with this $4 million bill. What a joke!!

jjjjj | 7/7/2009, 6:23 pm EST

Disgraceful – the Jackson family should pay the entire bill for the outrageous, over-the-top, ridiculous spectacle — not the city of LA or its residents. The Jackson clan should be ashamed that they aren’t classy enough to pay for their own side-show.

I think Micheal’s childhood was robbed(by his father and fans) forcing him to be a child in his adult years, that explains his behavior with trains, animals and playing with kid like a kid.I don’t think he molested any children just damn immature. The majority of us can’t even imagine not having a childhood. So what if u donate some $,he brought the world to ur country.Whatever you(haters) wanna say he’s THE KING OF POP leave the bloodclaat man name alone and live with it.

OldFunker | 7/7/2009, 7:11 pm EST

I think there may be a bigger picture that a lot of us are missing. This day was about more than one guy. It was a chance to look back at how far we have come since the Jackson’s helped (with others) break the color barrier on pop TV. You don’t get a chance to do that very often.

I will send a check to LA to pay for the chance to have that moment. Heck, New York paid for a few ticker tape parades to honor other milestones.

Thomas Paine | 7/7/2009, 7:27 pm EST

The concept of common sense has been diluted and eliminated from this society. If you would like to honor a freakish, garish clown such as this, do it on your own dime, not on that of the public. It’s truly disturbing how lacking in common sense this society is.

I have been listening to Micheal Jackson songs from he died as I really can’t believe it. Gone too soon! I would really leave Jamaica to come to that funeral. But I want to express my condolonces to his family and I am terribly sorry I was not able to make it to his funeral. RIP Micheal. And all you people that having nothing good to say please dig a hole and bury yourself and whatever is it u ave to say.

kibbie | 7/7/2009, 7:45 pm EST

oprah and obama will be happy to pay….

duhhhhhhh

lilupe | 7/7/2009, 7:50 pm EST

I saw the whole service at home..I was one year younger than Michael and he influenced me with his music. Throughout his life he was exposed to criticism and negativity. And I strongly believe that the family should pay the “extra” security needed because everyone involved with the Jackson’s will be profiting from them anyway. Let the guy rest in peace because the circus of allegations and lawsuits will forever continue, especially with his children.

lilupe, Oxnard Ca | 7/7/2009, 7:54 pm EST

And I think that whoever owns Neverland will also be making a killing with the Jackson’s permission that’s how they can foot the bill.

chris | 7/7/2009, 7:56 pm EST

let good morning america cover the story that donations are now being sought to cover the cost of the funeral. You mean to tell me that the entire Jackson family are not willing to cover the cost of the funeral? I find that absurd !!!!

terrie | 7/7/2009, 7:58 pm EST

The Jackson family never asked for donations. Get your facts straight. The Mayor of Los Angeles did. Why ?? Who knows. It was enough wealth there to have his memorial paid for with no problem. I’m sure it will all be taken care of soon.

Sheep | 7/7/2009, 8:18 pm EST

It is no mystery why California is approaching bankruptcy. The fact that the people are willing to fund the burial of a pedophiliac freak like this simply underscores the herd mentality that exists here. It’s no small irony that Staples Center’s next event following today’s debacle is the Barnum & Bailey circus; a sucker truly is born every minute…

jim | 7/7/2009, 8:50 pm EST

LA is now asking for donations to pay for this? Riots in China, Iran. Starving people in Africa? And this is going on for how long? Its the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine….

Derek | 7/7/2009, 8:52 pm EST

Madina speaks the truth.
I’m saddened, though not the least bit surprised, by the amount of misinformed people here. The memorial will be paid for so don’t worry about your precious tax dollars. Wow. I mean seriously? We his fans and friends will take care of the bill.
Michael Jackson did more for children than anyone in history, period. (This can never be emphasized enough!) The amount of money and love he gave can NEVER be underestimated. Do some actual research and if you still disagree then fine, but please don’t repeat rumors as if they’re fact.
Rest in peace my good man, and may the moronic press allow your children to have something approaching a normal life.

A Plead for common sense | 7/7/2009, 8:53 pm EST

The death of Michael is sad. He was obviously an emotionally distressed person. But to ask the public, everyday hard working individuals (if they’ll lucky enough to still have jobs), to pay for a millionaire’s funeral is ludicrous. Most of our homes are the size of 1 of his rooms at Neverland. If his estate or his family doesn’t have the money to cover his funeral, it shouldn’t have been so elaborate to begin with. And no Shelley Monkman, I have NEVER been asked nor felt obligated to contribute money to a funeral I attended. The average citizen doesn’t ask for such a thing. Our Country and our State is suffering. Our troops are suffering. Children with starvation or cancer are suffering. But we’re supposed to contribute to a GOLD casket, celebrity appearances and an overblown memorial? No thanks. I have more important places to put what little spare money I have.

John | 7/7/2009, 8:55 pm EST

It’s no wonder our society is where it is today when a city will ask for regular people to pay for a rich persons funeral. It really shows the sad and true nature of this twisted family. Rest in peace MJ as you have left this circus behind.

PISSED OFF!! | 7/7/2009, 9:33 pm EST

WTF???? Has everyone gone mad!!!! WHAT KIND OF SO CALLED “KING” OF ANYTHING HAS TO HAVE A CITY LIKE L.A. ASK FOR DONATIONS TO COVER THE EXPENCES OF A MEMORIAL SERVICE!!!! The JACKSONS & most of the people in his “circle” of the world! should be ashamed of themselves!!! The City having to ask for donations for “THE KING OF POP” Give me a break!! The cost of this over hyped event should cost the Family and Friends who have it sittin in the bank(or a drawer)Not the fans who made them wealthy over the last 40 yrs!!! The only reason this memorial was classified as “PUBLIC” was because of the free tickets. Otherwise it would have been a “PRIVATE” event. I believe they would of had to take on more responsibility in the MONEY & SECURITY department. The rest of the country has to pay for life and death! Why not Michael Jackson? OH! OH! I almost forgot- The “THE KING OF POP” doesn’t have to- when there is donations and government funds!!! Whole family is a real peice of work!! No Class!!! What next??

monk | 7/7/2009, 9:43 pm EST

The family is NOT asking for the public to pay for the funeral. They could have had a private ceremony and excluded all the fans. The memorial was for the fans the policing was for the fan control. Would the world want to be excluded from this ceremony that the family selflessly shared with us.

Where is the return? | 7/7/2009, 10:00 pm EST

In any other business venture the person who pays for the product should benifit from it. So if the tax payers are paying for the funeral it only seems fair that all profit that comes from it should go back to the taxpayers since we all know that soon it will be put on a dvd and sold and there will be many vendors making profit.

Some girl | 7/7/2009, 10:06 pm EST

Um excuse me?! part of what ceremony exactly? MJ obviously wasn’t in the casket! some of you really amaze me clearly the government is taking advantage of us by asking us for “donations” in the first place, what “donations”? when obviously the money has already been spent whether or not there are any donations our tax payer money has already been spent…. and they’re calling it “donations” well i call it bull shit.

Not everyone is willing to fork up their hard earned money for a pedophile i mean *cough* “king of pop” *eye roll* that’s exactly why our state is in debt because of the morons running it and clearly the idiots living in it.

Okay. Most of did not know him personally so we have no grounds to talk to his character. But I have more than one time that he has given so much money and time that we should not complain about paying for his memorial. Fact of the matter is this if a man has 100 coins and gives 10 and a man has 2 coins and gives one which has made the greater sacrafice. All the time and money that he gave was no different than many good people I know that give money and time that have a lot less. In my opinoin you can look through out this country and find a lot of people who have made bigger sacrafices than him. And they will be a lot less people who care about when they die. Dont get me wrong however they want to do his memorial is fine with me, just remember that there needs to be some type of sense in this.

How dare the mayor ask Jackson fans to help foot the bill for expenses the city incurred due to the Michael Jackson’s Memorial and Burial?

How dare he put up a site asking for donations from fans to pay for these events!

The city should Never have spent the money on private events. Monies the city and the state do NOT have.

Taxpayers do not need to foot this bill, the Jackson family and AEG promoters need to foot this bill! They are the individuals with the money .. Not Taxpayers who are already strapped by this economy and the unemployment rate of this state.

It is Incomprehensible of the mayor to request this of taxpayers or Jackson fans.

Go get the money from the Jackson family and AEG promoters who organized and promoted these events!

Sid | 7/7/2009, 10:39 pm EST

I think the city is the one who wanted the public funeral the most, so they could make money off of it. Asking for donations and the tickets can pay for a lot of it but they can make more for when people want to see the memorial again.

LC | 7/7/2009, 10:54 pm EST

To the extent that the sponsors of any public event has to pay for police OT, whoever is “sponsoring” MJ’s public funeral ought to pay, but only what’s typical. Why did the police have to pile on security for a one day event that exceeds two weeks of Olympic events spread out over more territory?

And why did it have to be public? The word fan is short for fanatic, so I get the need for there to be some collective way for them to memorialize him. However, since only a relative handful could actually be at Staples, there didn’t have to be tickets and a public event like this.

Still, even if MJ’s family or estate doesn’t pay, LA still comes out ahead on balance. How much additional tax revenue did LA reap and will continue to reap because of MJ’s work?

PISSED OFF!!!! | 7/7/2009, 10:56 pm EST

The CITY is asking for donations. Not the family. *If the family is so SELFLESS they should pick up the check!!! If they are not or could not pick up the check they should have never of had LARGER THAN LIFE service that they did. The way the whole Jackson Family has shifted the weight of all this on the city is an embarrasment. California is not here to finance FALLEN STARS. Jacksons life was a CIRCUS~ living even more in passing.
**We can’t even keep our teachers in jobs or Srs. proper health care in California~ but we can control the fans a MJ ceremony at the cost of the government or tax deductible donations????????
Talk about going out with a BANG!!

amy z | 7/7/2009, 10:59 pm EST

st .
I suggest this idea :

Since now the city of LA is not sure how to cover the cost of this potentialy 4 million memorial service, AEG (the group that put on the memorial service) should partner with city of LA and offer the opportunity for people to make a small donation ($5-$10) to the city of LA and the memorial of Michael Jackson and in return you receive a copy of the gold cover memorial program.

This is a win win for everyone !!!

If you agree with this please contact the following person and let them know this idea:

Contact: Michael Roth, V.P., Communications – (213) 742-7155- For more information on AEG, visit: http://www.aegworldwide.com

or the let the LAPD know this idea as well.

kennakemae | 7/8/2009, 12:25 am EST

Okay folks, this country is in a major money crunch here. Why should we make donations to one of the richest families in the US?
He was clearly a drug addict and a pervert!
If he had the money for all his (want to be white) surgeries..than he got his wish! After all they always said angels were white.
I am not going to mourn a millionaire!
Who cares? Just another person to me that meant nothing!
In other words…pay for your own habit and death!

Ellen | 7/8/2009, 12:27 am EST

I think it is a travesty to ask taxpayers to pay for security, either directly or indirectly. The state subsidizes city governments, and California is in complete financial crisis, cutting services to humans and to homeless animals (my personal soft spot). To spend this kind of money on a media circus is blatantly IRRESPONSIBLE. We are doomed.

Brian | 7/8/2009, 1:00 am EST

The city should simply send the
bill to AEG and demand they pay
the bill. Or at least AEG should
pay half of it since they own the
Staples Center and all.

LA Romansgal | 7/8/2009, 1:09 am EST

Since Micheal Jackson’s passing, I think it’s now finally “okay” to openly recognize his talent in spite of some of his very questionable “life choices” and unquestionably bizarre behavior. He was a once in a lifetime talent, the world will sorely miss him, and he (like ALL the rest of us), is NOT REPLACEABLE! I only wish we would learn to recognize this value toward ALL human life – while we are (each) alive and walking the earth – not waiting until after we’ve departed… How sad for humanity, and tragic for Micheal Jackson!

I also think that the cost of the memorial for MJ should be born by the family – just as the rest of us have to – unless there is a just and due cause for “special consideration”. Any assistance given to the Jackson family is a tax revenue UNLESS specifically given freely by the public. All TAX revenues should be spent on what they were collected for – specifically. Incidentally, I don’t think MJ would have endorsed this unless the financial support were freely offered by the public… at least, I hope not. Yes, the Jacksons’ are in another class when it comes to popularity; but they are ALSO in another class when it comes to both income earnings AND income potential. They should NOT be collecting our tax dollars for a MJ memorial unless they willing to contribute an EQUAL AMOUNT IN TAX DOLLARS on a CONTINUUM (IN EQUAL PROPORTION – again, like the rest of us)!

May your soul find peace in God’s goodness, grace, and eternal love… Romans 10:11

ski | 7/8/2009, 1:58 am EST

It’s ridiculous and embarrassing for all Angelinos for the mayor to ask people to give money for this spectacle.

This was not Katrina.

The Jackson family can afford to pay for this. Where did the $25 a head go? There will be DVDs, movies, CDs, you name it generated from today alone. Do not tell us for one minute the city can’t be reimbursed for this expense by a fraction of the money being made from this every minute.

Better yet, maybe the city can go to the gold-digging parents of the kids who were allegedly abused by Michael. What a crock that was. Michael was only guilty of never wanting to be an adult. Those parents are more guilty of child abuse than he ever was, using their children to bleed MJ for money.

Shameful.

Connie you are crazy! | 7/8/2009, 1:59 am EST

Connie MacKinnon are you joking? To ask a Police force to donate their time and withhold their pay for an M.J. service? Do you have any idea what kind of annual salary a police officer makes? Not a ton of bread. No police officer should donate their time for an unnecessary and egotistical event for an amazing artist that hasn’t done anything artistically viable since the early 90’s. The Jackson family and AEG should pay for this “extravaganza”. If you think this public service was just for the fans, that’s only partially true. This “memorial service” is really just another way to keep MJ in the media spotlight so the family can capitalize on more financial gain (more album and merchandising sales, the upcoming This Is It rehearsal videos, etc.). As a Los Angeles resident and taxpayer, I am outraged that I will probably have to pay for some of this service. MJ, you will be missed but I’m so happy this media circus about your passing is coming to an end.

Geez people, the mayor first stated that the cost of covering the extra officers for todays service was part of an emergency fund that the city of LA has in reserve…two, the family is not asking the fans to do anything…three, to those who believe the Jackson family should pay for the security, please…the MEDIA hyped up how many people would show at the Staples Center and even intimated that there would be trouble…not as many people showed up and there was no trouble so why should the family be on the hook for the cities waste, dare I say mismanagement? four, the city is full of itself…with all the people who have shown up, they are sleeping and eating and shopping at stores that charge sales tax which will offset some of the cost of their waste…and lastly, if any of us died today and our families needed an escort wednesday, the city would pick up the tab…so why is it that this family should be treated any differently…whatever your feelings about this man he is now dead….at what point do we stop talking negatively about him? there is no way for him to defend himself so why do we continue to waste precious time beating our heads up against a wall, knowing the end result will be the same…we will never be able to prove or disprove any accusation against him…

When my mother and two brothers passed away, not only did my sisters and I EMPTY our savings accounts to cover the majority of funeral costs as well as the funeral brunch (celebration) after the burial. Like Michael Jackson was IRRESPLACEABLE (as one poster said) to the “world” — Our mother and brothers were IRRIPLACEABLE to our family. If it weren’t for the generousity of friends who loved them contribute to her funeral by handing up envelopes with monetary gifts — we would’ve gone into serious debt to cover these expenses.

My point being, if all those eccentric RICH family members and RICH celebrities helped by contributing to the outregous memorial the CITY would not have to bring up the fact how much it cost to shut down highways, overtime for police officers, etc. Also, why didn’t the Staples Center CHARGE for the tickets to mourners –after all, they got to witness an amazing CONCERT!!! To miss his musical talent is one thing….to have a “send off” for a person who made bad choices and died of an apparent overdose is ridiculous. Most familiess have private services when a family disgraces them by overdosing themselves with drugs!

Sure, I feel for the children — it’s always devastating to lose a parent but coordinating a circus for a memorial is disgraceful for a drug addict! I truly believe FANS and his celebrity friends need to PAY FOR IT!!!!

Why weren’t his TRACK MARKS from drugs on his arms DISPLAYED at the circus — perhaps that might’ve brought people to their senses and he was a rich, spoiled man who made very bad choices to deal with his success.

pbarton | 7/8/2009, 8:19 am EST

One poster mentioned the Mayor of Los Angeles has a “reserve of money for EMERGENCY” services. When did a FUNERAL procession become an EMERGENCY????? Living in the NYC area, 9/11 WAS AN EMERGENCY!!! The coastal cities near New Orleans had Katrina–THAT is an EMERGENCY!!!! Los Angeles has definitely have had their share of earthquakes — THEY ARE EMERGENCIES but I highly doubt if a FUNERAL CIRCUS will ever be considered a CIRCUS. If fans can spend a fortune on Michael Jackson memorabilia, leaving flowers for the City Sanitation workers to CLEAN UP…..and ENTERTAINERS can get all dressed up and SING at the Staples Center….they are the ones who should be making a DONATION to the City for all the time, effort and protection they provided to the Jackson family during his untimely death due to his own DOING!!!!

Really?? Outraged | 7/8/2009, 8:48 am EST

I am just torn up over these arrogant comments I am reading. We are suppose to be innocent until proven guilty in this country and everyone must have forgotten that Michael Jackson was NEVER convicted of any wrong doing. He cared about children like more parents should and he was different than us but who are we to judge. Look at MJ’s legacy and I dont mean try and remember what you can, go look it up!!! See how much time he gave to helping people. True there are every day men and women who do the same thing but this man reached so many people with his music and its only fitting he is sent off with such an amazing memorial. They went crazy for Elvis, John Lennon, Kennedy, and Princess Dianna (sp?) and lets be honest with the exception of Princess Dianna these people all had skeletons in their closets.

Stop acting so inconsiderate people! Show some character.

DebR | 7/8/2009, 9:46 am EST

MJ’s family should have planned a service and send off for him that they could afford to pay for, like the rest of us do for our loved ones. If they can afford a gold plated coffin, they should pay for all the other costs. I know that I paid for the police detail for traffic when I paid for my parent’s funerals. Wake up LA – send his estate the bill.

Michael Jackson is an inspiration and has inspired me to do more. Maybe if people weren’t so selfish, jealous and greedy this world would be a better place. He gave countless amounts of time, money, and love and are you kidding, LA wants his family to pay, how about they pay him back for the heartache, pain, and suffering and money he donated. Michael never asked for anything in return, all he wanted was a better world. You people are selfish, heartless and miserable in your own lives which is why your comments are so self centered.

Taxpayers pay $4 million for a multi-millionaire pedophile’s funeral??? They guy had more money than kids in his bed and taxspayers pay for his funeral? What the f*** is wrong with this society? Jackson’s brilliance as a performer will always be remembered, but stop making him into some god, his personal demons made him very human… and very RICH. Make the family PAY!

Shelia | 7/8/2009, 2:26 pm EST

Rolls-Royces hoasted by SWAT and the city (residents) pay 4 million bucks? That’s just wrong. JAckson was in debut but paying $100k per month rent; if the family can roll in luxury cars, make them pay the bill, not the rest of us. They got rich off us buying the records!!!

Really?? Outraged | 7/8/2009, 3:26 pm EST

Everyone is getting this all wrong. You as a tax payer are funding the police department to keep the peace in your city. The Staples Center is owned by AEG which is also the promoter for Jacksons would-be upcoming tour. So the cost of the Staples Center does not fall on the city. Its simply the security which is their job to protect the public. If this was a concert they would still use police and the city would pay for it. Its expensive but people like MJ dont die everyday(i mean people as popular as him). Get over it people the city will deal just fine. Its not like MJ is their first celebrity to deal with.

Anonymous | 7/8/2009, 4:04 pm EST

Hes a great entertainer true. But those of us laid off and struggling to pay taxes still foot the entire bill (and yes and tiny small town funeral homes charge you for the single police escort!) So if the family offered a free service then it is their responsibility to foot the bill. Or at the most ask the people who attended with free tickets (as it is decent to give money or flowers at funerals). I think it is over stepping the bounds to ask tax payers to pay for a celebrity memorial.

Yes, yes they do. Who the hell do you think you are that you know this? Have you heard of war? Genocide? Did you know MJ personally? I still defend him from the gold-digging parents and I applaud his generosity but really, this comment is beyond the pale.

“Get over it people the city will deal just fine. Its not like MJ is their first celebrity to deal with.” – this comment exposes your true idiocy. When has the mayor of LA EVER IN THE PAST asked people for donations to the city when a celebrity has died? WHEN??
The city is in debt and people are losing their jobs (with the city and county) daily. You make me sick.

TLN | 7/8/2009, 4:36 pm EST

It is sad that we lost such a talented musician and despite the faults and accusations that surround MJ, it is not fair that the taxpayers have to pay for the memorial service. I believe the family had a private funeral service so the second service should be handled completely different. I don’t know that it could be considered a public event, but something just doesn’t seem fair. Michael’s past should not even be relevant regarding all the controversy. We are not here to judge him, it is just that there has to be guidelines that should be fair and equal to all.

pm | 7/8/2009, 6:25 pm EST

It is ridiculous for the people of LA to have to pay for this when funding is being cut for our schools, parks, law enforcement, etc. It is sad that THIS is a priority over the well-being of the residents of the city. Our taxes have already been raised. What more? Get your priorities straight LA. Have the family pay for the service. Any other family would have to pay for a loved ones memorial.

Mina | 7/8/2009, 7:05 pm EST

It’s NOT that simple….people loved Michael, they loved him very much.

They NEED to grieve, and since he was such a PUBLIC iconic figure, the need is public.

The “cost” of the funeral expenses, ie police services, etc., is a public service, part of community well being, if you will.

So it is NOT wrong to have “tax payer” money spent on this process.

Michael gave a lot to the “public”, he was extraordinary, he gave millions to charity, generated A LOT of revenue for cities with his concerts and provided A LOT of people with livelihoods.

It is arguable that he GAVE a lot more than he received; a lot more than most people, so comparing him to private individuals does NOT make any kind of sense.

Be gracious and let him go in peace, he did not have an easy life, despite his wealth.

People always say “money can’t buy happiness” and there is “more to life than money” so people need to stand by their sayings, however pat they may be.

Michael Jackson, RIP.

Mina | 7/8/2009, 7:09 pm EST

The bottom line:

People are NEVER satisfied.

If the Jackson family had done a private, non public burial, there would have been NO END TO THE PUBLIC OUTCRY AND OUTRAGE.

When they did a communal/public ceremony, there is NO END TO THE PUBLIC OUTCRY AND OUTRAGE.

Obviously there is no pleasing mankind, no matter what the decision…..

So I am happy the Jackson family did what they felt was right and appropriate.

Whatever anyone else thinks is NOT the Jackson family’s problem, people need to remember that the Jackson family, nor Michael, for that matter, were NOT placed on this Earth to please them.

Seriously.

Mina | 7/8/2009, 7:12 pm EST

Why should a private individual, ie Elizabeth Taylor, pay (as has been suggested) for a PUBLIC CEREMONY?

Are you joking?

Before a person makes a suggestion about what another person should or shouldn’t do, they should place themselves in that other person’s shoes.

How would you like it if someone decided you should pay for the cost of something you had nothing to do with?

‘Nuff said!

Suffice to say, MJ remains a legend to his fans, a son of a mother and father, a brother to his family, a father to his children so who are you to run down a man you never met. Yes California, the memorial is expensive, and i agree the mayor shouldnt have asked for monies and i agree his family should pay for it, but please leave MJ in peace. You tortured him when he was alive with untold misery. To the point he hide his kids from this big bad world. Bless you soul Michael, you brought joy to many a heart worldwide. RIP

I have a suggestion. They should offer a package DVD/Memorial Program of the event to pay the city of LA. They could sell millions!! Pay back LA and give some to charity. Thanks! :)

I am egregiously concerned with our current mayor, Villaraigosa’s judgement as to where funds are being spent. I don’t think fans should have been asked to pay for this “star studded” event. They’ve gone their whole lives purchasing albums, memorabilia etc. Fans are the ones who made him the King of Pop. His family is more than well-off – they could have paid for this event. Frankly, the City of Los Angeles’ primary focus should attempting to fund education and transportation not someone’s passing (With all do respect to the Jackson family and fans). If that’s the case, why not celebrate EVERYONE’S passing?! You will be missed Mr. Jackson…..

In stable times I believe it’s a duty to taxpayers of LA to host events at no charge and without complaint. Culturally, I think the event was appropriate and well organized and should be seen as an example of the great service of the city of LA and other participating agencies and/or entities. I wish the Jackson estate could donate to those expenses, use it as a tax deduction for the estate, and maybe this would help both the city in it’s efforts to maintain some financial stability. Perhaps a big tax deduction could somehow benefit the estate in the future. After all, the main focus ultimately needs to be how to support three young children who’s live’s are just beginning.

I know that Michael was talented and loved, gave a lot to charities, and he was extraordinary, but his family and Movie Star friends should donate this 4 million to bankrupt California. They have the money and could use it in his memory. Micheal would not have wanted his fans that are struggling financially to have to pay it when the rich just walk away. Let the ones that can afford Bentley’s and Rolls donate the $. He had friends like Oprah who could pay the whole amount off with the change in her pocket. Micheal’s abusive father loves money so much that he would never give a dime….he is taking his $ to the grave. I hope the rest of the Jackson family will help in his memory. We need to realize this is a time of crisis with our economy. California will probably have to lay off more state employees to help pay for this. Again, Micheal wouldn’t want this!!! He was a loving person besides a performer. He will always be the King of Pop! I am sure he walks on the Moon every night. Think about him every time you look at the moon.

I’m with Cylde. The pervert is dead and I’m sorry for that, but he was just an entertainer. Talented yes. The Mayor of L.A. should pay for it out of his pocket. He authorized it. I’m pretty sure he has had enough kick-backs to pay for it. They should have had that circus out in the desert & forget the security and let the idots do what they do. Most were black and M.J. wanted to be white. Joke is on you.

For the people that are saying “why should the people have to pay for it”, why dont you take a look into the charities that he donated to which totals close to $500 million dollars and ask yourselves if a friend a coworker or family member benefited from one of the many charities he donated to! He didnt have to spend a dime of his money on anyone other than himself and yet he continued to give. Im sure some of you are poor, or know someone with AIDS just to name two of the things he believed in funding, and because of his generous heart, people like you or people that you know were able to benefit from it and now you are whining about giving $5 or $10 dollars. Im not rich and I dont live in the US but I dont find it hard to give back to someone who gave so much.

RIP Michael.

Financially MJ’s death was a boost to LA. The hoardes of tourist dollars spent during those days is way more than what the memorial cost. So tell LA to suck it up.

The Jackson family should pay for his tribute. This is an outrage! City employees could be laid off and they have money for that. How dare that family expect them to pay this!! They could at least pay for some of it. They disgust me and so does that frickin dumb mayor!!

karen | 8/4/2009, 9:39 pm EST

The LA Mayor should be ashamed of himself. LA owes Michael Jackson and the family an apology. How dare they ask for money! They did not need money to prosecute MJ for charges that were unfounded. I want to know when LA will reimburse Michael Jackson for the millions of dollars in legal fees to defend charges for which he was found not guilty. He did not beg for money! When the family is paid back for those legal fees then LA can ask for assistance with the security costs. The man was found not guilty but you killed him anyway. Governor Schwarzenegger should be embarrassed to have such a greedy, malicious local government as part of the state of California.

I was up preparing for a medical test and starting reading the Michael Jackson comments. I am 54 years old so I was older than Michael Jackson and I was amazed by his talent before he recorded with the Jackson 5. He used to be on T.V. programs with them & since he was younger than me it broke my heart to see him get hooked on pain medication due to burn from the pepsi commercial. All I can say to all those who did not know about him is don’t critize him until you know the whole story. You don’t really have to know what happened in his life…just those without sin cast the first stone. I read a lot of the comments and it seems a lot of younger people don’t know much about him. I guess they probably don’t know much about “the king of rock” either. Elvis Presley was the king of rock he passed in my lifetime as well and was extremely popular and like Michael was excentric as were most genius in history. If the people on this list of comments had seen the masses of people gathering all over the world to mourn Michael they would realize that they were in the minority. It is November & I still cry when I read comments like these. I can only hope that these people since making these comments have learned why he is and will forever be the king of pop! As for the child molestation I will always believe this was people who saw a way to get some money from someone who had it. Michael only settled this to get on with entertainment. It was very obvious how much he loved his fans and I believe this is why he settled. He was a child at heart who never had a childhood. He started on T.V. when he was only 5 the Jackson 4 started until he came along and as time went on he became the king of pop. The king of rocks daughter married him in a vain attempt to save him from the fate of Elvis Pressley’s self-destruction) she realized she was in over her head and divorced Michael. She had children to think of & knew she couldn’t save Michael from what happened. It is still very sad and lots of people greived for Elvis (the king of rock) and Michael (the king of pop)I hope that time will be kind to the memory of Elvis and Michael I understood that both men had hearts of Gold and really cared for other people. Many people who critized Michael probably didn’t know very much about him. He was in the guiness book for giving to charities. My mom always told me if you can’t say anything good about someone don’t say anything at all. She is a very loving Christian woman and is probably why I feel the way I do about Elvis and Michael. I really don’t expect to change those with so much hate and lack of knowledge but I hope something in this will educate someone to have a little more love in their heart. As Michael said in his song to raise money for charity “Heal the world, make it a better place for you and for me and the entire human race.” He made of lot of bad choices in his life but like I said those without sin cast the first stone! There’s no dening even if you didn’t like his music he made a mark on the music industry. He will go down in history as one of the greats. I wouldn’t be surprised if he wouldn’t be remembered in history books as one of greats!
