Brooke Shields Recalls Special Relationship with Michael Jackson

7/7/09, 5:28 pm EST

A teary Brooke Shields approached the podium at Michael Jackson’s public memorial in Los Angeles today and spoke about the unique friendship the two shared as 1980s megastars thrust into the spotlight at a young age. In the special Michael Jackson commemorative issue of Rolling Stone hitting stands this week, the model-actress reveals the King of Pop asked her to marry him — more than once.

“I would say, ‘You have me for the rest of your life, you don’t need to marry me, I’m going to go on and do my own life and have my own marriage and my own kids, and you’ll always have me,’ ” Shields tells Rolling Stone. “I think it made him relax. He didn’t want to lose things that meant something to him.”

(Check out photos from Michael Jackson’s all-star memorial.)

Shields says the innocent nature of the pair’s bond persisted as they grew older, and that as he aged, Jackson became “more asexual” to her. “You saw women who were more sexual, who wanted to throw themselves at him and feel like they were going to teach him,” she recalls, “we just found each other, and we didn’t have to deal with our sexuality.” Shields tells RS her conversations with Jackson about her relationships revealed a lot about how Jackson insulated himself from the outside world. “As I grew up and started having boyfriends, I would share with him, and he was like a little kid who talked about the bases — what first base was, what second base was, and it sounded very odd to the outside, I can imagine, but to the inside, to someone who’s never really left his bubble, you can understand how he would be curious.”

My God, people’s coldness just never ceases to amaze me.

Brook Shield should not have come to the stage at Staple Center for Michael Jackson’s funeral. She’s embarrassed herself. Where was she when Michael Jackson was in trouble? If she knows he was such innocent, why hasn’t she said Michael Jackson was innocent to the media before he died? Why hasn’t she said anything to those people who accused him of wrongdoing? Why wasn’t she there holding Michael Jackson’s hand when he was sick and in 2005 trial? Why didn’t she tell Martin Bashir that he was a liar? The only reason Brook Shield was with Michael Jackson in 1980s was because she wanted to be in his spotlight just for her. Now, after all the times, she suddenly wanted to come on the stage to make a memorably statement once again to be in the spotlight. Too bad, Brook Shield, you played very well. You were fake because you are an actress. If you really care about him, you should have been there when Michael Jackson was in trouble, not only the good times.

They Way They Were | 7/7/2009, 7:11 pm EST

Nice to know they had a brother-sister type of relationship (I’m not being sarcastic). Yeah, everyone was flipping their collective lids because the Calvin Klein model is hanging out with the King of Pop, but you know what? Screw ‘em. Only Brooke and Michael knew what they had, and that’s what matters. It’s only too bad they didn’t make more memories, cause a friendship like that shouldn’t be cut short so soon. I’m glad Brooke spoke out and let everyone know that Michael was a nice, normal guy who wanted to be treated as such. Everyone who was calling him a freak and weirdo are people who know absolutely NOTHING about him. Unless you got to know the man personally, don’t judge. It’s very easy for the media to take certain things and twist them in whatever angle they like.

He was the greatest man alive. Brooke shields for all we know could have been helping Michael in the background where the destructive paparazzi couldn’t get there dirty grip on. So Cynthia has no right to even comment. I love you Michael, your my inspiration in life. Even though I didn’t know you personally, all the comments and speeches I heard from your family not the paparazzi truly showed who you were. The lyrics in your songs and all the things you have done for this world such as charity and bringing happiness and togetherness has showed me and the rest of the world what kind of man you are. I’m 15 going on 16 right now, and I have been a fan of his music ALL OF MY LIFE. There hasn’t been a single song or action that he hasn’t gone through that I have hated. I love you M.J. I hope your family and kids well, and I want to be an actor so hopefully I can personally meet your family one day. For all you criticizers out there, I want to make it big and inspire people the way Michael has. Thank you and god-bye.

You gotta be kidding JP. He was an entertainer – a great one – but still an entertainer. Besides, I think Jesus Christ upstaged M.J. as “…the greatest man alive.”

PrettyBelle | 7/7/2009, 8:46 pm EST

Brooke Shields was a fairweather friend. When Michael was in trouble, she distanced herself from him, as did all his other female “sisters” – Diana,Liz,Lisa Marie, and possibly LaToya. Fairweather. Brooke took the cake when it came to this “friendship”.

someone | 7/7/2009, 9:28 pm EST

Cynthia,

You have no idea what the hell your talking about. You don’t know the inside story or to what extend of a friend she was, a lot of people where trying to help Michael Jackson.. everyone was doing it from different angles.. you cant just go out and be like he didn’t do, it wouldn’t have mattered at that point, and to make this clear, no man who donated millions and millions of dollars to children charades would actually commit a crime like that. So if you have negative opinions about anything having to do with Michael Jackson, or his life or anyone apart of it, keep it to yourself.. because no one cares about what you say anyways.

RIP
The King Of Pop

AMAC | 7/7/2009, 9:35 pm EST

Michael was the biggest and best ever!!! RIP MJ!!!

Rosamond Vincy | 7/7/2009, 10:01 pm EST

What would all you people say if, in the course of sorting out the papers from his estate, information came to light that showed he did do inappropriate things with boys? I am surrounded by dozens of people I work with who a month ago made jokes about the man & now want him bloody canonized as a saint; the hypocrisy of people never ceases to amaze me–alive, vilified; dead, perfect… same old story seen time and time again. I’m not commenting on his talent or his brilliance as a performer–just pondering: if a friend of yours was accused of something as heinous as this, and it was never proven nor disproven but settled out of court, (as one of the 2 cases was) and you had young children (as did many of his female friends), might you not wonder? Not for a moment? Would you have let your 9 year old son spend the night at his house without being allowed to be there yourself? Yes, the man is dead. It’s sad. But there are people dying by the thousands in horrible starvation and slaughter…where are they in the news?

Parma | 7/7/2009, 10:02 pm EST

All negative taught about MJ and Brooke are like (paparazzi) background noises which needed to be filtered out and stay focus on the positive values of MJ.

R.I.P MJ

Cindy | 7/7/2009, 10:35 pm EST

I share the same birthday as Michael and have always believed in him, it is a shame that he never got to feel the love he so much deserved. He was proven innocent, and Debbie Rowe sold her children and they dont know her why should she want them now $$$$. Leave the children with whom they know and trust the Jacksons. Rest in peace Michael, I will light a candle for you on our birthday.
Love always
Cindy

Thriller and Off the Wall are awesome though!
Peace out.

Jeroen Tel / Maniacs of Noise | 7/7/2009, 10:46 pm EST

I have deep respect for the music legacy Michael Jackson left behind. A truly great artist and and in many ways misunderstood individual may finally rest in peace now.

One of my absolute favorite artists with great passion for music “as it should be” has left the building…

I hate what the media has done to “make a buck” over the years exploiting him! I don’t have one positive word for that same media exploiting him once more reporting about him now.

He was a good man with so many talents. And he will be missed by many being part of this living planet…

MJ… rest in peace… You were one of the good guys! (and in the memorial his daughter said so herself in tears… hence it’s the truth!)

Anonymous | 7/7/2009, 11:08 pm EST

cynthia, i can see where your coming but none of us know what really happens behind tv.i bet you dont personally know the jackson family or brook shields so you can’t say any “facts” you don’t know.

RobertG | 7/7/2009, 11:38 pm EST

Brooke Shields was sooo 25 years ago in MJ’s life. Maybe they DID share the common bond of children being exploited by their parents. But in time, they outgrew it and each other. Michael asking her to marry him WAS perverse.

You marry someone because you love them, not because you want to possess them. For her to not recognize this and NOT run screaming, says more about her than it does about him. Ms. Shields’ career has always been marginal; she’s been good enough to get the acting gigs, but not talented enough to keep them or to bridge them to other gigs.

This memorial spectacle on television is just that, a spectacle. The REAL friends of MJ are the ones that steered clear. They are the ones with class that know a cheap exploit when they see it. CNN is just now replaying the breakdown of his daughter; it’s in the fifth iteration as I write this.

Aside from his personal issues, time will tell whether or not MJ’s musical legacy will endure. He broke many social and artistic barriers, and created new musical and visual works. History is replete with examples of badly-behaved artists. Ultimately, his works will be remembered and venerated; his quirks will be footnoted and analyzed.

Godspeed Michael Jackson.

Reg4Jesus | 7/8/2009, 12:32 am EST

Besides Michael Jackson and the boys he (allegedly) molested, which he was found NOT GUILTY, GOD knows what really happened. I hope MJ repented for his sins and asked for His forgiveness in his dying hour. In heaven though, we will all be able to sing and dance as MJ was so blessed to do here for his short 50 years on earth. God bless to his beautiful & innocent children and his family as they go through this difficult time of losing a loved son, brother and dad.

A big thank you to former President Nelson Mandela, a man of integrity by his own action and right, for his kind message to the Jackson family. It is Africa’s message to the Jacksons’family, especially Michael’s children.

I find it amazing that people think they know the truth about the private lives of celebrities.

Who the hell knows what went on with them and why they stopped talking. None of us were there. She spoke about him very elegantly and humanized him like no one else has recently.

He’s dead, she’s paid her respects, the end.

Go and listen to his music and be grateful YOU are still alive.

cant we all jest get along | 7/8/2009, 7:53 am EST

MJ is the greatest man in the galaxy. He would never have slipped into a lethal drug dependancy if it hadn’t been for the EVIL WHITE media who were like hell hounds on his trail. He would have never been charged with pedophilia if it hadn’t have been for that EVIL WHITE prosecutor who took the lies of that EVIL WHITE mother and her bratty EVIL WHITE son and ran with them like OJ leaving a crime scene. He would have had some black friends if it hadn’t of been for those EVIL WHITE hanger ons Brooke Shields, Liz Taylor, McCauly Caulkin who sucked him dry True Blood style. So what if had a little pecodillo? Maybe MJ will finally get some peace in heaven because there won’t be any EVIL WHITE people there.

deep | 7/8/2009, 8:51 am EST

It seems to me that all these people upset over the memorializing of Michael are mundane and evil. For a brief moment we stopped making war and hatred and violence and money-grubbing our number one topic of discussion. The war headlines were wiped out. Instead we got heartfelt tributes to a man who touched the world with his music and caring. All of us alive now were lucky to have been alive at the same time as Michael Jackson. We witnessed something incredible and unique in our lifetimes that was a positive force for good. Of course all the people who are negative, cynical and full of hatred are bitter about this. Hasn’t history shown us that these people always show up to growl at the door when anything good appears in our midst. We are going to miss this incredible gifted spirit walking among us.

I think Michael Jackson should come back to life and give Weird Al a big fat kiss on the lips for making him famous!!!

HOlly | 7/8/2009, 4:08 pm EST

This is the best acting Brooke has ever done. If she could do it one screen she might be able to resurrect her career and not have to ride on the coattails of a dead man.

So? | 7/8/2009, 4:32 pm EST

@RobertG :

You’re claiming that Michael only wanted to marry to “possess” her. Have you ever thought he might’ve ACTUALLY LOVED her and thought this is the only person who understands him and whom he can truly relate to? I think that’s what Brooke meant when she said “he didn’t want to lose things that meant something to him.” But I have a strong feeling that negativity is what really sets your heart aflutter.

Ollie | 7/8/2009, 4:58 pm EST

Alison | 7/8/2009, 7:16 pm EST

Michael Jackson told Oprah that he was “in love” with Brook Shields. Now this looks very consistent with her saying in Rolling Stone that MJ asked her to marry him, several times. I am glad she came out and told the world about how Michael was like. MJ had good taste.

cat | 7/8/2009, 11:09 pm EST

geez, you all go on about Brooke like you were there! What about all the other stars that “entertained” at the memorial. Were they looking for a spotlight too? Let the respects be paid and MJ rest in peace!

nemolix dupax del sur | 7/9/2009, 12:52 am EST

The legacy that Michael left will shine forever in this universe. It is a sad thing that we lost a man with a very great talent so soon. Millions of years will pass and there will never be another Michael Jackson. May He Rest In Peace!!!

lisa | 7/9/2009, 1:40 am EST

Brooke shields turned her back on MJ, she never supported him during his trials and hard times! Now he is a ” true friend” they shard a Bond, PLEASE….. some friend she was!!! She made me sick!!! Lisa

Anonymous | 7/9/2009, 7:17 am EST

I think he was really in love with her but she never responded since she was not as emotional and romantic as him, I think this one way love in micheal’s life has caused the other scandals in his life and made him deviated in feelings and sexuality, brooke you could have been his saver but you didn’t , it is not your fault actually , you could not love him and there is no force for love…

Humane | 7/9/2009, 10:11 am EST

Why hate on Brooke for how her relationship with Michael evolved over time? I remember watching Michael arrive via helicopter on Princeton’s campus to pick up Brooke for a date when Brooke was a student there. What woman wouldn’t love & cherish that kind of memory?
How many of us have attended funerals of former friends who at some point in life did things we didn’t understand; but we still chose to honor the memory of who they were when we were close to them in the past? Cut these people some slack – - they are or were human with flaws; just like all the rest of us.

suzanne | 7/9/2009, 11:54 am EST

@lisa How do you know if she turned her back on him and wasn’t there for him during his trials? Maybe their friendship became more private as the years rolled on. You don’t know that she wasn’t there.

Carrie | 7/9/2009, 12:02 pm EST

To Ollie, maybe you need to stop talking about Michael. Can you let him rest in peace now that hes gone. He wasn’t a freak. Maybe you all need to look in the mirror and see who truelly the freak is, it wasn’t Michael. I love you Michael. I’m proud of Brook. I’m very proud of Michael, let him be in Heaven the Angels. GOD BLESS YOU.

Ali | 7/9/2009, 4:50 pm EST

To all the Brooke Shields Haters.

How could she have defended MJ against all the accusations? Was she there in bed with him and the boys to know what happens? Just because you’re friends with someone, you’re not able to truly know or understand all their troubles.

And even if he called her up and said I didn’t do it, could any reasonable person just take someone else’s word?

All the people who are crying at the Stapes Center, need to find God or meaning in their life. MJ is just another singer, who was their at the right time. No big deal. Could have been Usher, Boys2men, Will Smith, any body of color could have done what he -supposedly done-get over it.

Brooke, a little TOO LATE, i dont hate you, but your sentence must have broke his heart even though he may not tell u, wow, i cannot believe this, why didnt she said it before, as for the glove that would hurt her hands as she said in the memorial, she should know by now, that he started it to use it to hide his first decoloration of skin that started on his right hand, Brooke joke about this on the memorial, and she told that Michael would respond to her ask to take off his glove by looking at her, shake his head and just smile, Brooke, why u reject him, why didnt you give him a chance????, RIP MJ; just RIP

Lina | 7/10/2009, 7:58 am EST

I dont hate her, is just , she could have say it before, but it was their privacy, but, Brooke why didnt you give him a chance, why?, just a try, he wanted you, cause you were good, i guess you werent prepare to marriage, but Michael might have had his heart broken, even though he would never tell her, RIP MJ, just REST

To ‘Can’t we jest all get along’-07/08/09 and your raid on EVIL WHITE people–Michael was acquitted on all 14 charges by an all white jury- 8 women/4 men. I think you need to listen to a few more tracks of ‘Man in the Mirror’ and ‘Black and White’. Agreed on media and and the idiot Peter King.

pixie sherry | 7/11/2009, 10:19 am EST

This isn’t for the “Ollies” writing in b/c they aren’t coming back here to smell the stink bombs they leave behind. This is for those of you who keep getting comments like Ollie’s where they try to hide their hate/dislike behind the shield of the war. Let those know that we DO care about the war and the people suffering because of it. We have for years now asked for the war to stop. And what answer did we get? Cheney said “So what.” We still care, and there are those overseas who are mourning the loss of Michael also. We are just taking a little time to grieve for someone who never said “So what.” Michael never let anyone who was suffering down. He let one Evan Chandler know that he didn’t want to spend millions of dollars to produce a comedy called “Robin Hood: Men In Tights” and had to pay for it the rest of his life. IMDb.com shows Evan Chandler as the screenplay writer and that’s the proof that he did this out of spite and forced his own flesh and blood to stigmatize himself as a victim of sexual abuse. Jordan Chandler lied because his father told him to do it. And what’s worse is that after asking for $10M, Michael said he would give him $1M and for all this pain and suffering Evan Chandler still only got $2M. The rest went to Jordan CHandler who is now wearing designer clothes and blingety bling. Tell the people who try to say we should be thinking about the war that Michael never said “So what.”

I really like Brooke Shields. I also like Elizabeth Taylor. My favorite song by Michael Jackson is “Human Nature.” Those who knew Michael Jackson closely always speak from their heart. I would like to hear them talk more about their friendship with Michael as well as what he meant to them!

I will never stop loving you Michael.
Never.
You are a hero – no, its more than that; your truth, beauty and unparalled integrity are, to me, unquestioned. I urge people to go Thesilencedtruth website, click on the heading ‘Remember’ and just read what people are saying. In particular read Brooke Shields. I am at work right now in London, phones are going crazy around me and I am trying to hide my face because I am crying. Actually I feel like screaming. I wanna ask anyone, can anyone tell me please.
How could we have let this happen?
How could we have let Michael be so wounded by lies and the media, that his spirit gave out? Why do Nancy Grace, Gloria Aldred, Diane Dimond, Martin Bashir, Tom Sneddon still have jobs, why are people still listening to them? Where is the apology, the f****** apology
for this .. this taking of a life? This beautiful, beautiful boy who gave us nothing but joy for decades, who became a man, transformed himself, music, video, dance and the act of giving itself – right before our eyes; was being killed slowly by the stress and trauma of being continually derided, disbelieved and hunted. Now all I hear is, drug this, Murray that, bald this, autopsy that. There is no respect, no value, no shame for what has been done. Forget Murray, that’s a red herring. Michael was tormented and exhausted, he took proforol to sleep – and to forget.
I know how he feels.
I have never been more heartbroken or disappointed in humanity than I am now.

I will carry this with me always.

After all is said and done, Michael has gone now, nothing except an apology from the media…and more than anything a program for the world to see, on the backgrounds of the families of the children who were made to lie about their time with Michael .Michael is owed this, please let justice be laid on his grave so he can really be at rest… Please let someone come forward to start this action as this is what Michael would have loved more than anything, come on let us give back big time for the cruelty we inflicted on this beautiful soul.

You folks all make me laugh. For one, Brooke and Michael were very close friends. Sure he was in-love with her. But she did not have the same feelings for him. So be it!
Now Imagine! For those of you who say; you would have married him. Can you imagine living lonely days and nights without him while he is out working, touring and practicing his skill’s? Would you be able to handle not going out on dates with him like a normal couple would? You would only be able to go out with him Privately as he always closes down restaurants or shopping mall’s to avoid the public or Paparrazi. Brooke said so herself in an interview, most of their time spent together was in his home. Due to the over exposure of him. Would you be able to handle that? Not being able to date like a normal couple? And for those of you who state that Brooke abandoned Michael when in need? EVER HEARD OF THE TELEPHONE AND COMPUTER? What makes you think she abandoned him. They could have spoken by phone or e-mailed, She could have continuously visited him at home. WE DON’T KNOW ANYTHING PRIVATE THAT GOES ON WITH THOSE TWO!!!!! If you knew Michael and Brooke for as long as I have? You would know why Brooke chose not to Marry him. I admire and love Michael myself and if he proposed to me? I WOULD HAVE ALSO SAID NO! Why? I would feel like a prisoner in my marriage. I think Brooke forseen that and Lisa Marie Presley has first hand experience with THAT! And the accusations of child molestation? Again….. If you knew Michael like I do; He is a little boy in a grown man’s body. He was a little boy wanting his childhood back and with the urge to only have children as playmates that he never really got to experience. He was robbed of his childhood and no two children are alike. Just because his brother’s and three sister’s could handle no childhood, doesn’t meen he could. THINK ABOUT IT!!!

Michael no esperó a Brooke, él quería hijos. Lástima Brooke y Michael Se amaban sinceramente…
