Lambert, Iraheta Get Pumped for American Idols Live’s First Gig

Kris Allen looked visibly uncomfortable in the hours leading up to the American Idol tour’s kick-off show in Portland, Oregon. But it wasn’t because of nerves. “I just really have to pee,” he said, hoping for a well-deserved break in the midst of a series of interviews. (Read our report from the Idols tour’s first show here.)

The Idol winner and his nine companions were feeling more pumped than apprehensive about the show. After all, they’re playing for fans now. “You don’t have the whole judge thing, the cameras aren’t in your face,” Allen said. “You’re just playing for the crowd and you can feed off that energy.” “You’re nervous on the show because you have these four guys who are going to tell me how much I suck in front of so many friggin’ people,” added Allison Iraheta, the season’s youngest Idol. “With the tour, I know there are a lot of people out there who voted for me.”

But the idea of playing for such a large live audience does seem impressive to the Idols. “This is definitely the biggest crowd I’ve performed in front of,” said Adam Lambert, whose pre-show preparation includes some push-ups and sit-ups to get his blood pumping. There should be plenty of blood pumping in the audience, too, considering that Lambert is opening his set this summer with the awesomely over-the-top “Whole Lotta Love,” the Led Zeppelin cover that blew away the Idol judges (and fans). “It’s fun, it’s sexy,” he said.

Despite his rock god status, Lambert again confirmed he’ll be exploring a variety of genres — pop, dance, electronica, funk — on his upcoming album, which includes collaborations with producers Linda Perry, Sam Sparro, RedOne and Greg Wells. Iraheta, on the other hand, is happy to be nixing disco night and doing what she does best — rocking out. The raspy-voiced teenager is working on an alternative rock album with David Hodges and Kevin Rudolf.

Meanwhile, fifth-place finisher Matt Giraud is getting a taste of the other side of Idol. “I’m Seacrest and Simon,” he told us, explaining that he’ll be serving as a host and a judge for Yobi.tv, an online singing competition that’s attracting contestants from all over the world.

Speaking of Idol personnel … any chance that they might show up at one of the shows? “If anyone would, it would be Paula,” said spectacled soul singer Danny Gokey. “She hung out with us just recently. She genuinely cares about us — [Idol] is more than just a paycheck to her. She’s got a lot of heart.”

Lambert is still trending on Twitter. Don’t watch Idol so I didn’t really know who he was although I had a vague idea because of the media’s gossip obsessed need to talk about his sexualiy – what do I care. But his voice is crazy. That’s one hell of an instrument he’s got there man.

Dee | 7/6/2009, 11:11 am EST

Vada | 7/6/2009, 12:31 pm EST

LOL!
This is becoming a pattern with Kris. His first ‘meeting’ with Simon and Randy was at the urinals, as told in his Billboard interview.

Cazana | 7/6/2009, 12:35 pm EST

In his first show, Adam conquered rock legends wearing rhinestones and blue eye shadow and shut up any doubters that this man is a superstar. Trending on Twitter after a 20 min set. Epic win!

AdamAddict | 7/6/2009, 1:02 pm EST

Darcey, no matter how successful you wish Adam to become, the fact of the matter is he came in SECOND
PLACE. It’s nothing to be ashamed of so please, as an Adam fan, don’t make it sound like it is.

AdamAddict | 7/6/2009, 1:07 pm EST

Fine, we know you don’t like this kind of music or style, but you don’t have to disrespect Adam…Be nice, he didn’t do anything to you guys…If you have your favorite, go talk nice things about them, why bash Adam…. we get that you are not his fan, stop being rude and grow up

Adam’s voice and vocal abilities are truly amazing. What an incredible performance in last night’s concert! I am so jealous of those people who could watch Adam performing live in AI concerts.
On the other hand, I am really happy to have finally obtained a copy of the RS magazine with Adam on its cover in UK two days ago. The cover was stunning. Thank you RS!

Ryan | 7/6/2009, 10:08 pm EST

Love the way Allison performs, she seems so full of energy, entertaining, and very talented… I personally don’t like Adam as much as most of you guys but I give him credit, he’s talented, but too dramatic…

Funny you brought up Kris’ first meeting w/Simon and Randy at the urinals. Remember his comment on playing guitar with Slash? “I looked over and there was Slash playing next to me. I thought I was going to pee my pants”. He is so down to earth, and says just whats on his mind. Great kid.

The reason why we bash Adam is we know the difference between commercial art and art. Commercial art is based on compramise, all for attainment of the Almighty Buck, and/or status. A real artist is someone whose art emerges from strange and familiar depths, someone w/ a fiery compulsion to make art whether there’s money in it or not. Lambert (like Simon Cowell, the rest of em) is merely a symbol

One UK Adam Fan | 7/7/2009, 1:34 pm EST

dlt – could you kindly share a couple of names whom you call true artists? I am not sure if there is anyone not appreciate some financial security in this world as we can’t survive with just air. It is obvious that Adam truly enjoy performing and be honest he is very good at it. along the way if he could make some money then I will congratulate him. Even old masters of painting or classic music scholars have exchanged thier works with money.

Lorena | 7/7/2009, 2:07 pm EST

dlt, Actually IMO Adam is the only true artist I have seen come out of Idol in any year. He can rock, sing beautiful ballads, or anything else he wants to sing. I listen to his music all the time. He doesn’t need the visuals to sound great. They are just a wonderful addition to everything else he gives us. If I wanted to just listen to someone sing I would just play a CD. If I want to listen to someone who sings great and see someone who knows how to put on a great show then I will pay good money to see & listen to Adam Lambert.

Trish | 7/7/2009, 3:33 pm EST

Adam is a rare genious with free spirit. I hope he brings rock & roll back becase unlike pop music, only a true genious can become rock god & Adam possess that gift.

More artists. Hank Williams (not his son), Chrissie Hynde, Etta James, Patti Smith, John Coltrane. These folks had some financial success, but the times were different, more artist-tolerant.

Today, many artists have given up on the idea of making it. But there’s the Internet, etc. Originality is not wanted, and that’s the way it’s been for awhile. Back in the sixties you could make two or three albums that were flops before you got dropped by a record company. By the eighties, if you made two or three songs that were flops, you were done.

Hence, karaoke shows like AI. A wise Frenchman said, If you wanna be free you have to be responsible, which means you have to support yourself–or (Henry Rollins, etc.) starve

Andrea | 7/7/2009, 6:12 pm EST

I love Adam so much! just like the song you sang, Adam, you electrify my life. Can’t wait for your real concert.

One UK Adam Fan | 7/7/2009, 6:34 pm EST

dlt – Thank you for sharing your insight. Unfortunately many of the true artists you names here struggled to sell their works – some had a minor success some earned the recognition after their death, so their off-springs or whomever had their works for next nothing got a fortune. Some of the musicians you neamed were so-called underground artist who wanted to stick to certain type of music or image (or they had a limited talent to branch out) but still the same they all made records or two to sell and wanted to succeed – don’t tell me I know nothing about music. I am 53 and have been brought up with good old time rocks of Woodstock and went numerous concerts of every type of artists. I went to see Pop, Loud, Led Zep, Grateful Dead (Zappa), Clapton, Santana etc. etc. and some clasic music (Have you?) – some I like some I didn’t enjoy, but I always had an open mind for all creations.
I find that you are like little boy “look at me, listen to me, I know everything and only person knows the real thing”
I have stop listing music since mid-80s and dreaded with recent light-weight pops with no substance. So I am not sure what it was when I heard Adam Lambert sung Satisfaction but I felt like I was travelling back to the time when I was 20’s – surge of excitement. I guess I thought that Adam can bring back something new and old at the same time. As you said yourself, the time has changed and you like or not, music became one of the industries which many depending on their livings. (Mind I am talking about all the people behind a scene, not just a singer/band and producer)
I am looking forward Adam’s CD and hoping I would like it. After all his voice is definitely worth listening. If the music makes you happy then what business you have to disagree.

One UK Adam Fan | 7/7/2009, 6:46 pm EST

dlt – Oh sorry I miss your word “starve”. So you only respect someone who is unable to earn a record contract and are not able to support themselves (never mind about their wife, kids and dogs)? You may add that often they have an addiction or two with something, too.
Mmmmm that’s a little narrow-minded clarification, isn’t it?

Minnie G. | 7/7/2009, 6:53 pm EST

Adam can definitely bring back the joy of rock & roll. Hope that his music will be rock. Come on Adam, shock & shake us with your rare talent. Don’t keep us waiting too long cause we miss you already.

dlt | 7/7/2009, 9:24 pm EST

Maintaining one’s integrity; that’s what “starve” means. Like everbody else, (real) artists have to hustle to put the bread on the table, even if it means scrubbing trash cans. Starve in both the literal and metaphoric sense. If drugs/drink be your choice, they cost money too.

Some artists would rather remain underground than achieve mass acceptance? I like what Johnny Rotten said, “I want success, on my own terms.”

“I’m a little boy. Look at me.” Sounds like Simon Cowell. “Lambertian.” Is that one of his words?

dlt | 7/7/2009, 9:45 pm EST

Twerpy, decadent Crosby, Stills and Nash, but they wrote/played their own songs. Compared to their eighties big hair offspring, Led Zep played world music

history major | 7/7/2009, 9:57 pm EST

dlt Don’t embarrass yourself here on RS and don’t embarrass RS, please. For one…Iggy Pop wasn’t pop? Not much. Duh he embodied pop circa late 70’s along with his enabler Bowie. Seems to me you’re info is not first hand as you would have known this implicitly. Other than being an addict his whole life, he ushered in pop and so did Bowie for goodness sakes. Hello? China Girl? Obviously, you are unfamiliar with The Gifted Adam Lambert’s body of work and have never seen Crawl Thru Fire for example, which could have been any 70’s Bowie extravaganza. True, he isn’t vomiting on stage like your hero Iggy, but that was always played out anyway..yawn As far as your inference goes about having to be uncommercial and “starving artist” to be of “value”…go sell crazy some place else (Nicholson circa 1999)..Adam Lambert has been a working disciplined “starving” artist for 17 years including operatic performances such as in Brigadoon. I don’t think you’re a true music/artist lover or advocate or you’d be wishing for his success personally and professionally. Not trying to boost your “cred” (ineffectively).

Jax | 7/7/2009, 10:56 pm EST

Evidently Allison, Adam and Kris are the top 3 favs, I personally like Allison the most, Adam is too dramatic and Kris tends to just a little boring… Allison is my perfect combination.. GO GIRL!!!!!

dlt – Don’t quart me Jonny Rotten like his word have any value. Sex Pistol was not a musician nor artist. Just a bunch of social misfits who wanted to be something they were not. Don’t forget I live in London and know what’s going on in our music world here. Rotten does some TV commercial for bread or butter or whatever now – some hero indeed. But I don’t condemn him for it because he is just a human like you and me. No body is superman. Just embrace whomever trying to reach their dream. Don’t be a armchair critics looking for only negative thing to say, Music is for all.

Mike | 7/8/2009, 7:06 am EST

Adam Lambert is going to save rock and roll from itself. Music has needed someone with a powerful voice, charisma, sex appeal, and THEATRICALITY for a LONG time now. I’m tired of everything on rock radio sounding the same. I blame Eddie Vedder. Because PJ was successful, now legions of guys who can’t sing are lead singers.

F that. Rock needs another vocalist like Freddie. Like Plant. Like the big voices from metal in the 80s. And I think this kid will do it—-except he seems to have good taste. I don’t imagine him putting out a lame record. I’m waiting.

dlt | 7/8/2009, 7:33 am EST

The Pop in Iggy Pop has nothing to do w/ pandering to pop music in any time period. MC5 guitarist Wayne Kramer once said, “Iggy has a fuck you sense of humor”.

In high school, Iggy, whose real name is Jim, played drums w/ the Iguanas, a local Detroit-area band. They played pre-hippie 1960s covers. Jim was also working at a record store; the owner would call him “Iguana”.

Even Bowie, who was more pop than Pop, never thought of himself as merely a pop artist. Unlike Bob Dylan, both Pop and Bowie dug Andy Warhol, and Warhol scene chronicler Lou Reed.

People have been wearing the short spiked punk hairdo for years, so it doesn’t mean anything. But in 1977, when the two Pop/Bowie albums were released, if you didn’t live in the city, it meant something, it scared people, made em wanna fight.

Don’t go to Michael Stipe (and Todd Haynes too, perhaps) if want real information about Bowie and Pop. Velvet Goldmine is fiction, fun.

Oh, Bowie made China Girl a hit, not Iggy. Have you ever heard the original version, the Idiot album?

One UK Adam Fan | 7/8/2009, 8:15 am EST

What a bore, I am now done with you, By

RS – why don’t you give dlt a job…

I am blown away by how many people think that Adam is a rock star! Let’s see him write his own songs. Let’s see him put his own band together. All the idols are kareoke singers.
Simon Cowell is laughing his ass off all the way to the bank. He has completly fooled most of America into thinking that these kids are real musicians and bonafide rock stars. Give me a break!

Adam is fun | 7/8/2009, 11:54 am EST

He entertains. That’s what singers, entertainers are supposed to do… they are supposed to entertain us. dlt, i think you wouldn’t know fun if it hit you in the face with a 2 by 4.

ravengirl | 7/8/2009, 12:27 pm EST

Never in a million years did I ever expect to attend an Idol concert. I mean, I might as well go see the Jonas Brothers or Miley Cyrus, and I’m so not doing that. Just not my thing, never will be.
But ADAM! For him, I am traveling hundreds of miles, spending hundreds of dollars (hotel, tickets, meals, new tires for car, glitter, etc) to see him in concert. I suppose the other Idols will be there, too (I won’t mind Allison a bit, either — love her).
Adam truly is something amazing, and I’m not going to miss that.

I agree with Mike. Too many bands today claim to be “underground” because they have awful voices and aren’t well known. Well heres a shocker for you: That’s why they aren’t well known. I know bands like “All Time Low” and “Pheonix” aren’t exactly underground but you get the point. Pheonix sounds like a cat in a blender…No offence intended, and All Time Low is just a ripoff of FalloutBoy, another lame-band. We need someone like Adam in the music industry to give these wannabe’s(Excuse the lack of a proper word here) a run for their money. Adam has such an energy to learn and expand his talent. Hey, i’m into heavy Metal but I have gone through a Classic rock phase and I know Adam’s got what it takes to succeed.
