Green Day Pack Club-Size Intimacy Into Seattle Arena at Tour Launch

7/6/09, 8:25 am EST

Photograph by Jackie Butler

“You missed me?” Green Day lead singer and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong bellowed in the face of a fan who beckoned him from the mosh pit during the opening night performance of the band’s U.S. tour, before replying with equal vigor: “Not as much as I fucking missed you, goddammit!” And as if releasing a wave of energy that had building up during their four-year hiatus from touring, Green Day poured all their heart and soul into a powerhouse two-hour set that mixed songs from their latest album, 21st Century Breakdown, with a clutch of other favorites from the band’s extensive catalog.

(Check out photos from Green Day’s powerhouse tour opener.)

The stage at Seattle’s Key Arena appeared to be comparatively bare in contrast to the banner-draped stages of the American Idiot tours. But when the lights went out, and “Song of the Century” crackled over the speakers as if being beamed in from outer space, the black backdrop suddenly lit up to become a city landscape under a starry sky, and the subsequent “21st Century Breakdown” unleashed the first of the arena-sized explosions, flame pots, fireworks and strobe lighting that dazzled the audience throughout the entire show.

But the band’s obvious need to connect emotionally with their audience means they have an uncanny ability to make even a packed arena have the intimacy of a club gig. With the core trio of Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt, and drummer Tre Cool fleshed out by two additional guitarists, Jason White and Jeff Matika, and keyboardist Jason Freese, Armstrong was free to run around the stage and down a catwalk that extended into the audience with abandon, beseeching the crowd to wave, chant and sing. And by the time the band launched into “American Idiot,” Armstrong was confident enough to not even bother cuing the crowd, leaving them to sing the entire first verse on their own.

Green Day didn’t bring back their cover of Operation Ivy’s “Knowledge,” where they’d pull up audience members to play the instruments, but there was still plenty of crowd interaction. Armstrong was gentle with a clearly nervous young boy who’d been pulled onstage to “freak out and dance” during “East Jesus Nowhere,” and gamely accepted a full-on smooch on the lips from a delighted male fan chosen to sing a few verses of “Longview.” Most surprising, Armstrong found a young man in the pit who was able to play guitar through the entire nine-minute “Jesus of Suburbia” medley. “That was fucking amazing!” Armstrong said afterwards. “Tre, take him backstage and suck his dick!” Cut to Cool leaping from behind his drums, taking the young man by the band, and the two skipping together offstage.

For all the cryptic footage flashed on the rear screen (gasmasks, tanks, falling TVs), the show’s overall mood was upbeat and celebratory; amidst the hijinks of “Hitchin’ A Ride” and “King For A Day” (with its usual segues into “Shout” and “Stand By Me”) there was seemingly no room for 21st Century’s darker songs, like “Christian’s Inferno,” “Peacemaker” or “Restless Heart Syndrome.” The show was ultimately about Green Day reconnecting with the faithful, something they accomplished with effortless aplomb.

so whats the deal with having some other guitarest on stage so armstrong can run around?! it sounds like something a pop star would do or an entertainer as oppose to an actual musician. then he has the nerve to say ‘you missed me’?! shouldnt he have said ‘you miss us’?!?! he thinks its all about him. what a conceded little shit…

Let's play.... | 7/6/2009, 11:00 am EST

….how to tell the difference between 21CB and AI!!! You can’t!!!

Zach | 7/6/2009, 11:23 am EST

Frog Leg, relax. It’s a rock show, it’s supposed to be fun.

Wendy | 7/6/2009, 11:42 am EST

From someone who was there, it was the best concert I have ever been to. And being a teenager in the 80″s I have been to alot of rock concerts from hair bands to the legends. My husband and I enjoyed it as much as our 15 year old son and his girlfriend.

Lisa | 7/6/2009, 12:29 pm EST

This show was great. I was on the floor with my girls and we had a great time. So much fun.

ar | 7/6/2009, 12:49 pm EST

Color me excited, and hoping like hell they do play RHS in Minneapolis.

Mom, dad, son & girlfriend. How cool is that?

Diane | 7/6/2009, 1:07 pm EST

Frog Leg, you missed the point. A fan in the crowd had said to Billie Joe “We missed you.” And he was simply replying; “You missed me?” And it’s not unusual for more guitarists to be brought on stage; it leaves the lead singer freer to not worry so much about his instrument and more about entertaining the crowd. What’s wrong w/that? Kurt Cobain and Paul McCartney (to name two) have done the same…

frog leg is a retarded penis | 7/6/2009, 2:02 pm EST

it’s all in my name. thank you. can’t wait to see this show. sounds unbelievable.

dude | 7/6/2009, 2:16 pm EST

how do they not play Viva La Gloria?

Seattlite | 7/6/2009, 2:31 pm EST

Best show I have ever seen. Epic. Would see the same show 7 days a week if I could. Never a dull moment and great tunes.

Larry | 7/6/2009, 2:45 pm EST

It was a great performance. The band was tight from beginning to end and the energy level in Key Arena was amazing. So good that I’d love to see them again on this tour….

Uhhhhh...... | 7/6/2009, 3:04 pm EST

How can the lyrics and music get worse from one album to the next?

kg | 7/6/2009, 3:21 pm EST

My husband and I were there too. He’s seen a lot of punk/rock shows in his day and he said this was the best one yet… He called the band “professional” because they were tight, took little time between songs, were very entertaining and did a two and a half hour set. Not bad for three guys nearing 40!!!

StiGuy | 7/6/2009, 3:43 pm EST

Dude, no “Welcome to Paradise”?? Im seeing there show in minneapolis next week, and im really dissapointed in that set list. I seriously hope they change it by next week cause’, that set list really blows. Its all new shit, I love the new album but, what the fuck!

ar | 7/6/2009, 4:40 pm EST

Personally, I’m hoping for more new tunes than old. VLG 1 or 2, RHS, H&H, and LOTAG. But maybe a song or two for us fans from the Lookout! days would be cool.

iLly | 7/6/2009, 4:52 pm EST

No Welcome to Paradise and no Viva La Gloria!. Fuck.

Yayz | 7/6/2009, 5:44 pm EST

Frog Leg, you musn’t know Green Day too well if you think Billie thinks its all about him. Those three guys have stayed together so long because they can get along, a big part of getting along in a band is knowing that there is more than one guy in the band. Billie is quite aware that there are more members of the band, He’s probably just more interested in the show he is playing than to worry about wether he said us, or me. And get over the whole guitarist thing. It’s not the first time its been done. Not the first time Green Day has done it either. If you see them and Billie was too busy singing and playing the guitar, then he wouldnt be able to wander around the stage or reach into the crowd like he does. The best of the best bands bring on extra guitarists so that the vocalist can run around the stage and build intimacy and include the crowd in the performance. Some bands aren’t evan capable of it. Some singers just can’t build the same intimacy as Green Day. It’s a special thing that only the best bands seem to be able to do. So just be grateful. You conceeded little shit.

As for some other people use full words, yeah fair enough we can all work out what you’re on about but AI? can’t you just say American Idiot? bloody hell… and RSH? H&H? BTL? BOBD? Yeah sure, we can all work them out, but its not hard to type the damn words, either you’re too lazy or simply can’t spell… Get some brains, all of you. (that use these stupid abbreviations)

greendayfeen | 7/6/2009, 9:35 pm EST

I’m seeing them in Boston on July 20th! So fucking excited! If BJA asked me to come up and play ANYTHING I would probably die. These are some of the best musicians I’ve ever heard. Even though they have backing musicians you know BJA can play any of the guitar parts, cuz he records all of them. Any guitar part in 21CB is all Billie. From everything I’ve heard, they throw the best live show EVER!!!! GREEN DAY 4EVER!

hrjp | 7/6/2009, 9:54 pm EST

This show kicked ass from beginning to end. Could not have been better. I’m making a special trip to SLC just to see them again. It takes a lot for me to go to SLC. Enough said!

Kamilleon | 7/6/2009, 9:56 pm EST

I was in the very front of the so-called “mosh”. But the concert was AMAZING (sparkle, sparkle). Tre, Billie, and Mike all balance eachother out to create the perfect on-stage preformance. Everything was just how a big punk band should be!!!!!! Anybody who calls Green Day sellouts, read this: Punk is about anarchy, or disorder and no rules. BUUUUUUUUUT, there are rules to punk????!!!!!!!!! This does NOT make sense in any shape or form. Green Day took the big label to get more money to suppourt their fanbase. for proof, listen to Kerplunk, then Dookie. the only difference is the quality. Anybody that calls Green Day sellouts can shove one up the ass. I may only be 13, but I know punk. Green Day has it’s essence.

Anonymous | 7/6/2009, 10:12 pm EST

was at the show too. could tell bj was genuinely EXCITED to be back on tour. he even seemed to get choked up during good riddance. He did make the show have an “us” feel, when he told the audience – “turn off the cell phones, if they’re not here with us right now, fuck em.”

Seattle-o-rhama | 7/6/2009, 10:17 pm EST

AMAZING CONCERT!!! Amazing amazing Amazing!! Ive been a fan since puberty, so good to see them back again!! Love U guys!

Frog leg is filling a purpose.

I am sooooo excited to see them in San Diego on Aug. 20! A little dissapointed in the set list but it will be the first time I see them and I’m looking foward to just watching them preform. I’ve herd alot about the show they put on and I know it will kick but no matter what songs they end up playing!

Kim | 7/6/2009, 11:11 pm EST

By far their BEST concert yet!! I’ve been a fan for many, many, many years now and NEVER get tired of listening to their music. I’ve got my kids (7 and 12) hooked too!!
So glad to see them back. I liked the fact they played more than just their new album. I wish I could get tickets for another show!!!! One day I hope to meet them in person…….

CtrlAltDestroy | 7/6/2009, 11:39 pm EST

I live in the bay area, and out of all the east bay punk bands, operation IV, AFI, and Green Day, Green Day are the most shameless sellouts. They are a bunch watered down and polished, pop-punk rockers.

If only their passion for outspokeness extended to their music. The other day people were complaining about the Foo Fighters, and while I think their music is pretty bland, Green Day gives them a run for their money.

KR1ZZ | 7/7/2009, 12:06 am EST

YEAH!!!! FU*K YOU BUSH!!!!! I’m going to the final show on this tour it’s going to be fucking epic!!!! Good to see hitchin’ a ride on there. anyone that does’nt like green day can fu*k themselves up the ass with an hot iron stick.

Before you call me biased I like Green Day, I will at least attempt to like them until they stop making music. This is just my opinion on their new material.

The new Green Day is really easy to like, which is why I am not surprised most everyone here likes them. They did indeed sell out with American Idiot. They are writing music shallow enough that anyone who listens to it will think they are smart because they can figure out what it is about. Only 5-6 out of the 18 songs are remotely good. What people need to realize is that they felt pressure from AI and decided to write a simple minded concept album about how shitty the US is. If they care so much about the deprived humans in the world, then why did they make a “deluxe” version of the album that only the fiscally blessed would purchase. While it is common for bands to have an extra guitars, 2 along with BJ is a bit absurd. When I go see a band, I go to see the band play. I’ve watched BJ in the videos from the recent shows, and all I can think is that BJ needs to not play guitar at all in the shows, save for their old stuff. I don’t go to see people get on stage and play/sing for the band. Chances are they suck, and even if they don’t, I do not want to see a cover band. He thinks, “If i pull 6 people onstage and yell ‘alright’ whenever I can it will be intimate.” I don’t remember punk bands being famous for being intimate with the audience, let alone needing 2 extra’s to make their music sound perfect.

tl;dr Green Day is making shallow music to appeal to the simple minded, and they use 1-2 too many to preform it.

I’m going to the show in Chicago, and I can’t wait to see them again! Green Day, like all of us, has changed and evolved with time. As a result, their audience has expanded to include those who became hooked with “Dookie” and those who were thrilled to hear their political take on Bush and the “war on terror” in “American Idiot”. They are still making great music as Green Day and as their so-called alter-ego bands.

batgirl54xox | 7/7/2009, 2:17 pm EST

omg i saw them in vancouver and they were fucking amazing!!!! i would definitley pay to see them again! vancouver was the second stop and when they played “Jesus of Suburbia” he brought a guy from the audience to play, and he was so good! haha they were so cool!

ps – i almost cried when billie joe played “Good Riddance”. i grew up listening to that, and to finally hear it live was fantastic.

Anna | 7/7/2009, 2:33 pm EST

Oh, god. I was there Friday. Absolutely amazing, that’s all I have to say.

JGL | 7/7/2009, 3:54 pm EST

Saw the show in Edmonton, AB Canada last night: phenomenal. They controlled the crowd and the energy all night. Only complaint, if you have seen the ‘Bullet and a Bible’ concert DVD they did a lot of the same things, from the longview segment to the constant call back from the crowd. I am far from complaining, it just was familiar but so much better LIVE!!

DrZ | 7/7/2009, 6:04 pm EST

To the poster who listed the REAL hardcore bands, you’re wasting your time. You might as well have posted in Chinese, cuz the majortity of these teeny-bop fans were in diapers when those bands reigned.

Great show! | 7/7/2009, 6:15 pm EST

Caught them in Seattle. I have been to hundreds of concerts of all types of music over the last 35 years and this ranks up there as one of my favorites! Call them watered down, or sell outs if you want…but that band knows how to put on a stadium show! Great sound, great energy, crowd involvement. It was all there! Well done!!

aquanaut37 | 7/7/2009, 9:34 pm EST

When Green Day comes on the radio (which is often) my 5 year old son pulls a booger out of each nostril and places one booger in each ear in protest.
We’ve tried everything, but gave up when we started to realize he’s turning out to have pretty good taste in music…

Stephanie | 7/7/2009, 9:50 pm EST

I wanna see them in Madison Square Garden soo badly. I’m so close to there, but I’ve already got tickets to see them in CT. They are the best band I’ve ever listened to, and they have tremendous tallent. This is going to be the best thing that ever happened to me aside from meeting them in Best Buy on 44th and 5th the day their new album came out! =]

Anonymous | 7/7/2009, 9:50 pm EST

The Seattle show was awesome! It’s all about entertainment and they did just that. Any of you assholes complaining that they sold out and that Green Day isn’t punk enough can kiss my ass.Grow up a little the punk of the past is just that the past. Not everyone is pissed at society or their parents all of the time. Rock n roll is about having a good time and Green Day delivers, besides punks hey day was over decades ago. Have you seen the kids these days wearing Ramones shirts it’s really quite funny they have no clue what punk was. Green Day forever!

The last time I saw a ‘rock concert’ was 30 years ago and I saw all of those 70’s bands … but after seeing ‘Green Day’ in Seattle … I’ve lived my life … I’m ready to die … I’ve got a smile on my face and earphones in my ears … Would love to see them one more time at there biggest event of the tour but, I cant make it … wont live that long. They gave me happiness, love of the music, my resting peace. Thank you for that Green Day. Thank you for being in my life … (special thanks to Tre Cool … you made my love for the drums amazing. Pop Rock.

Singing about how the world is today is far less shallow then singing about girls and drugs like in their old albums.

bennie new york | 7/8/2009, 2:17 pm EST

Let me get this straight- Green Day makes a flawlessly crafted, epic rock opera that perfectly portrays Bush America with American Idiot, and all people like Pop Rock can say is that they sold out? And the guy actually sounds smarter than the average skateboarding, Mountain Dew-chugging dipshit who holds that opinion! As for 21st Century Breakdown, I don’t see it as a calculated follow-up at all. I see it as Green Day getting MORE ambitious and becoming MORE in touch with who they are as musicians. For this reason, it wasn’t going to convert anybody who thought the glory days were when Green Day sang about masturbation, which convienientally is the only thing that audience is really smart enough to understand. I’m not going to argue that they’re punk because they really are beyond that. This is a band that shows how much The Beatles, The Who and even Queen mean to them. 20 years from now Green Day will be widely regarded as the great band they are. I’d love to see if anyone will call them sellouts then.

OK. I like Green Day. But I will at least award you points for most creative way to lash out at the band. Far better than calling them poseur punk sellouts, or ‘they suck’. So even though I disagree with your child’s sentiments, your post DID make me smile.

first of all “frog leg”-that’s how’s on stage.Every artist has his own ego persona-and it’s his.BELIEVE ME: Armstrong knows pretty damn well he will not be where he’s now without the others ppls in the band. All of them love and respect one another very nuch.

you are just a green day hater-what the fuck are you EVEN doin’ here?get the fuck out you loser!!. Why are you wasting your time respondinbg to a band that you don’t like?!! go to a band you REALLY like and laeve us alone.Don’t like green day?! WEEL first: you got a really bad taste in music.Second: fuck you.Third:Billie Joe is an ANIMAL on stage and that’s what makes Green Day soo awsome.the fact that he’s soo in touch with the crowd is FANTASTIC.

This is truly a band that absolutely loves their audience and was extremely evident with their kick off show! I have never seen a band that had so many audience members up on stage singing along (or singing alone). Not to mention the 15 or 16 year old boy that played the entire Jesus of Suburbia song on the guitar. That was fucking awesome! This was the absolute best concert that I have ever seen. Huge on pyrotechnics, lights, and over all stage presentation. If you get a chance, go see them. You won’t be disappointed.

I was at the Seattle show and it was fantastic!! A series of events leading up to the show had me in a foul mood and it only got worse when the Bravery played. But Billie Joe changed my mood in a split second with his energy and stage presence. Best concert I’ve ever been to and I’ve been to hundreds.

Mom46 | 7/13/2009, 9:24 am EST

Ive seen a lot of shows. I’m a devoted fan of The Who and have seen them so many times I can’t count. I’ve never seen a show as amazing as Green Day in Seattle! Billy Jo has an uncanny way of sweeping you into their show. I was there with my husband and two daughters. We are all huge fans. My husaband has pancreatic cancer and for a while we were afraid he might not live long enough to see Green Day in concert. A miracle that they kicked off the tour here in Seattle. I say this was the best show ever not just because of the musical quality (wich was terrific)but because for those 2 1/2 hours I was was in a completely different world. I wasn’t thinking about my husband’s illness or the mounting medical bills. I was completely lost in thier world and totally connected to my kids. I thank Green Day for giving my family the time of lives!

YAWN. I’ll take Flipper any day of the week. These guys want to best the next “biggest band in the world” so bad it makes me wretch.Mall punk blows.

Halo | 7/15/2009, 3:03 am EST

I have been to tons of concerts over the past 30 years, seen the greats at the peak and past their prime. The energy and intimacy Green Day brings to their concerts is just amazing. But especially, one cannot deny these are real MUSICIANS. Tre Cool is one of the best drummers in rock.

The Ottawa concert was fantastic! We’d paid good money for decent seats but never used them, standing, waving our arms, pumping our fists and singing along for over 2 hours at this truly dynamic, always exciting show. BTW frog leg and others, the word you’re looking for is “conceited” — meaning full of conceit. I’ve covered hundreds of concerts from the ’60s on, and this was one of THEE best. A big, happy, grateful “Heyyyy-Ohh” to hard working Green Day from Canada’s capital.

Frog leg!!! Wat a no nothing narrow minded muppet!!!! (A) all great rock stars turn their performance into a show look at axel rose! Mick jagger! And even tim armstrong all of whom get the audience going by performing in an energized way on stage! To be perfectly honest I’d be pretty gutted if I went to see a band and the lead vocalist simply stood there stationary for two hours! (B) billie joes talent aint nothing to be sniffed at in 1986 at the age of 14 he wrote a song called ”why do you want him” a song that even by todays song is both lyrically and musically brilliant!!, I could sit here for hours writing comments which would tear your feable views apart! I have seen greenday 3 times and I’m going to see them in october in manchester and I can’t wait greenday are truly the best showmen on earth

snugglemuffin**gb** | 7/28/2009, 6:50 am EST

Greenday are by far the best fucking band that i have ever had the privilege of listening to, and im lucky enough to have tickets for their show in birmingham uk in october, i know i wont be disappointed i cant wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Was there last Friday & all I can say is wow!!!!!!!!!!!! I had a few hours off from problems to be absorbed in not just great music but a great performance, even in the nose bleed section. It was even wilder to have a 60+ man across the aisle from me singing along.

Colleen | 7/28/2009, 6:21 pm EST

tre, take the guy backstage – hilarious – hey anyone know – I saw a pic of Billie Joe hugging his guitar like Brian Molko – what song was he singing then – thanks

trecoolini | 7/29/2009, 5:09 am EST

Unfortunately I’m not able to see Green Day this year,as they’re not coming to my country, but I will be waiting all my life for them…

drew | 7/31/2009, 12:37 pm EST

The DC concert was great.

The haters out there are pathetic. They reference other punk bands to elevate their self-worth. It’s an emporer’s clothes syndrome where supposedly only those with ’sophistcated’ muscial palettes can appreciate their ‘ain’t I so edgy’ music. I guess for you, music that sounds bad is the only real good stuff. Sucks for you.

Give it up. Should they apologize for harmonizing, creating superb musical hooks, gettin pissed off about America, having sooooooo much fun live and taking us with them? Maybe for you, but not for us.

Thank you Green Day for making we want to play music very loud again for the first time in a long, long time.

jfee | 8/2/2009, 10:51 am EST

Drew, what a great comment! You couldn’t have been more right on target. This is the best band we have today, hands down (or “Hands in the air!” I should say). These guys know how to write tight punk rock music. It comes from years of hard work & paying their dues.
I have always hated that holier-than-thou attitude too many people have about music. If more people listen to a band then you can squeeze into your own living room then that band is a sell-out. Green Day are reaching a massive audience with a important messages. Don’t think that American Idiot didn’t help to turn the tide in this country. It helped nudge a generation to wake up to the BS that our government was feeding us at the time. These guys are f’ing brilliant, & those “pure” punk bands that the haters like to point to…those guys are looking up to Green Day to see how it should be done.

poysfxom | 8/5/2009, 1:44 am EST

The new CD is INFUCKINGCREDIBLE! The SEATTLE SHOW WAS THE TOTAL SHIT! I am going to drive to Sacramento to see them again! The best live band since The FUCKING Who, HANDS DOWN!!!

danomao | 8/5/2009, 1:57 pm EST

Just saw them in Miami with my wife and 18 year old daughter. I’m 56, have seen the best — and can add this performance to that list. Have loved all their albums, now I can’t wait to see them live again someday! Awesome performance. Come back to Miami, Green Day!!

Virginia | 8/6/2009, 4:21 am EST

We saw Greenday at Verizon Center, Washington, DC. This is the second time we have seen them live. This is the one concert I did not want to miss this year. They are incredible live. Billie Jo makes us all part of the concert. What an experience. They have fans young and old. They speak for a lot of us.

Rusty | 8/10/2009, 11:25 pm EST

I saw the Ramones in 1979 at the Agora Ballroom in Atlanta. This show topped that show. Seen many great Bands over the years. This Green day show ranks at the top. Billy Joe and the boys ROCK for two and half hours 110 percent. Thanks for a great show.

Adrian | 9/13/2009, 1:41 am EST

GREEN DAY please come to ECUADOR….south america…..please….here you have a lot of fans…….

Lynn | 10/1/2009, 8:35 pm EST

I didn’t read the rest just that dude called frog leg (that says it all to me really). Cant wait to see the band for the first time in a couple of weeks at the SECC Glasgow, bring it!!! Loved them for years but always missed them. As for Billie running about so what it gives added energy to a gig and he still writes the bulk of everything to do with the band so maybe you should shut the hell up you wee ****.

Ralz | 10/9/2009, 7:55 pm EST

saw them in berlin — sound, energy, show, show, show, they played as if its their unique first and last gig, fun, more than 2 hours.
it was amazing.
i didn´t have to pay for the concert. and wasn´t a fan.
now i am

Ralz | 10/9/2009, 8:11 pm EST

“i was´t a fan” before is a little bit wrong.
the album “american idiot” is one of the best ever.

E-28 | 10/12/2009, 5:33 pm EST

Going to see them this Friday. According to the rumors they’re gonna play for three hours…FUCCKKK..Even if they don’t it’s going to be magic again as ever!

Robbie0507 | 10/15/2009, 4:34 am EST

Going to see Green Day in Manchester – Second Night (on Halloween!) Promises to be a Special Night……They were doing 30 plus songs on their sets in the States – some of the really old stuff – disappearing Boy, Tight Wad Hill etc..?? but have knocked a few off the running order??? I was hoping to see a show to rival Bruce Springsteen in length!! They need to start doin’ Peacemaker….Potential next Single?? Otherwise perfect setlist. Anyone got an opinion on PRIMA DONNA? – support act for UK Dates…….TRICK or TREAT!!!!
