Michael Jackson Rehearsal Footage Shows Star Energetically Dancing

7/2/09, 3:57 pm EST

A video of Michael Jackson rehearsing for his London This Is It! concerts at Los Angeles’ Staples Center on June 23rd, just two days before the singer’s death, has been released to CNN. The footage shows Jackson and his backup dancers performing choreography to HIStory single “They Don’t Care About Us.” The video comes just days after AEG Live CEO Randy Phillips refuted claims that Jackson was frail and listless during his last rehearsals at the Staples Center. AEG Live, the company staging the 50 This Is It! concerts at London’s O2 Arena, provided CNN with the video.

“We have, and we may at some point release, some footage of him in rehearsal that would totally refute that,” Phillips said of claims Jackson was weak. The video seems to prove Phillips’ point, as Jackson dances fluidly and in pace with his backups. It’s unclear if Jackson was singing live. The video, as well as the photographs from the June 23rd rehearsal, provides fans with a preview of what the planned This Is It! spectacle.

As Rock Daily reported yesterday, Phillips was hopefully that fans would see the This Is It! concert in some capacity eventually, either as a tribute concert or the rumored DVD of the rehearsals. “The world needs to see this production, and it’s done, we have it in a vault… it would have been one of the most amazing arena shows ever,” Phillips said.

Also today, Us Weekly reports that Jackson’s London gigs were going to include a duet with eldest son Prince Michael. “He wanted his kids to see him perform at least once to get the vibe of the Michael Jackson mania,” Jackson’s publicist Stuart Backerman reveals. And while fans knew Jackson had one album in the works (he was collaborating with Akon and Will.i.am, among others), Billboard reports Michael actually had two records on the horizon — the pop LP and a classical, instrumental record.

If that was “energetic” I’d be amused to see what the spin doctors call “letargic”

HE WAS AMAZING !!!!!!!!!!!
I WILL ALWAYS LOVE HIM ..

Tito | 7/2/2009, 5:22 pm EST

He’s probably lip synching here. All concerts from the 90’s and afterwards were mostly lyp synched. I don’t think he would change that

He looks more like Tom Jones than Michael Jackson, he is obviously lip synching and is sluggish in his movements. This is not a well man.

MJ’s doctor should be held responsible. He was hired to provide 24-hour care, knew the medications, even watching Michael while he slept, and he didn’t even call 911? CPR on a bed? Even the most elementary students know you can’t do CPR on a bed! Charge him criminally, the money-hungry whore didn’t care about Michael and violated his hippocratic oath.

Not the most energetic clip they could have released, but certainly doesn’t look like he’s 48 hours away from death.

A farewell to one of the most loved, charismatic and misunderstood person in the world! Michael will always be remembered as the King Of Pop!
(I have to say, great song;the way he faded in to the dark at the end is some what symbolic to his death; very intense. )

R.I.P

there isnt much of a dance to this song so he looks fine if he did this during billie jean or beat it then i would have said he looks sick but otherwise he does look energetic

Great song and great performance! He didn’t appear ill in this clip tho. Glad the rehearsal was videotaped!

Anonymous | 7/3/2009, 2:41 am EST

Insipid, uninspired lip-syncing to mostly pre-recorded music and a nothing lifeless little ‘dance’ routine simple proves the guy was a washed-up has-been.

I can understand overdosing to try and save some form of legacy, rather than being seen as merely a tired shadow of your former self who no longer has the desire or skills to truly perform live.

Prince he aint!

Joe Shea | 7/3/2009, 5:41 am EST

This proves conclusively that Jackson the entertainer was still there. It was a great rehearsal, full of energy, well-choreographed and exciting. This surely would have been a landmark moment in music if ever happened in the London arena in front of tens of thousands of fans.

They should hang Joe Jackson up by his thumbnails for ruining his son’s life. That Michael ever spoke to the man again as an adult is amazing. Keep him away from those grandchildren. Michael was an original, and a musical genius. His father made him nuts off stage. Anyone who wants to pay tribute to Michael Jackson should work with children who have been abused. Doctors who gave him drugs contributed to his addiction and his death. They should go to jail. Listen to the words of some of his songs. I can only think…in a different world, with a different father – what might have been. The message of Michael’s life is that we should all be horrified at what happened to him. We were witnesses to his unraveling. We should be determined to work hard to protect children, to take care of one another, and to do good in this life.

It was a rehearsal, not a concert. Whether or not he’s Prince is a whole different debate. Hope you feel better about yourself. That ding you just heard was your microwave. Go get your burrito and cover it with mayonnaise.

I think people are seeing what they want because MJ looks exhausted, aside from being in rehearsals all day…I feel horrible he died but unfortunately this is an outcome for drug addicts…I am very sad

It’s CYA time for Randy Phillips, the AEG CEO who put together what has turned into the worst nightmare in concert promotion history.

Phillips greenlighted AEG’s booking and producing a marathon run of concerts starring a former superstar with a horrible record for project completion and broken promises/contracts over the past 15 years.

Now AEG faces the biggest refund problem in history and the loss of the millions they put into mounting and promoting these concerts…Unless they can sell some cobbled together rehearsal vids.

Per Rolling Stone’s own article in it’s last issue, AEG took a big gamble on Michael Jackson, admittedly with a potentially huge payoff…if he showed up.

Tragically, Michael Jackson ‘canceled’ these shows in the ultimate, most irrevocable way. Perhaps subconsciously.

It’s impossible to know what was going through his mind as tension and stress on him increased and showtime grew nearer. It’s increasingly clear he’s been addicted to heavy duty opiates for many years. Perhaps he was relatively clean trying to get in shape for these shows and had a slip. Other addicted performers have done this type of ‘clean up for the tour/money” cycle for ages. Apparently it was the first time for Jackson and something…broke.

In any case, it’s to be expected that Randy Phillips would be doing some major CYA work such as releasing vids of rehearsals which Jackson made it to – or at least ‘a vid clip’ – for now. Jackson was apparently MIA at several recent rehearsals and the choreographer was forced to use stand in dancers.

MJ raised some warning flags weeks ago – giving credence to skeptics’ views that he simply couldn’t or wouldn’t do these shows- by postponing the first several shows on the schedule.

Again per Rolling Stone’s article, in the weeks before MJ’s death, London bookmakers were laying odds these shows would never play.

Sadly they were right on the money.

I believe that Michael Jackson’s passing should be consuming the airwave time and over riding coverage of other important national and international events, but Michael is an international icon.He broke so many barriers that you, the world or I will ever do in our lifetime. I would consider myself blessed if I could touch a tenth of the hearts that Michael has touched throughout his lifetime. Growing up as a child I personally knew the feeling of racism, discrimination and bigotry. My people still suffer till this day and I am seperated by a wall here in the United States in 2009. Michael’s music touched my heart and his words will live in my soul. He has not only inspired me to be a better person but as you can see the entire world. Michael started with the MAN IN THE MIRROR and we should all follow the same example. We the world should be ashamed that after 2000 years we can not see beyond our own selfish needs and our determination to rule the world with power, money and war (but I guess you people feel that CNN isn’t doing their job if they’re not reporting on those issues, right) The only thing I can say is that it disturbs me that the media is still trying to “gain” ratings by once again publicizing Michael’s past (his hair, his skin, his surgeries, his court appearances, his debt, his drug problem) Are you serious? That not only describes HOLLYWOOD but its the same problems that everyone faces every single day and that is why PEOPLE (his fans) around the world could relate to him. I can understand that you want CNN and the rest of the media to spend their time and efforts covering newsworthy events, but this is MORE than just a person who just died. This is a person who tried to live in a world full of hate, greed, power and pestilence and through his lyrics and melodies tried to help make that change.

My condolences go out to the Jackson Family who have lost a son, brother, uncle, godfather ,friend, and especially to his children who have lost the most precious thing to them, their Father.

To the fans or non-fans please try to follow Michael’s example and start with the (wo) man in the mirror and make a change for the better.

To the CNN staff especially Larry King and Anderson Cooper
keep up the great work!!!! Follow your hearts and report the truth!!

Finally you can rest in peace Michael!! We who believed in you and your cause will try to keep your torch burning!

Marisa

I just can’t grasp the whole “AEG losing millions thing”.
That would be IF they had to refund everybody but my guess is that hackers bought all the tickets, made millions resseling them and vanished. So it’s only a ridiculous percentage of people that will actually ask and get money back from them…

That’s the most articulate, common sense post I’ve seen in this whole debacle. Well put.

When he announced these shows months ago it was obvious he know longer had it in him.

At least this way he manages to keep some form of legacy and save some face. Sad.

It’s easy to show love when someone has passed on. We must learn to show love while they are still alive.
Michael, thank you for everything you have given to us and for the life lessons you taught us.
Many will continue to criticize but far more will love you and miss you.
You’re gone but will remain one of the brightest stars in the universe and your music will live on forever.

It´s really hard to believe that Michael Jackson did this performance just two days before his death. He didn´t look ill, but he still had much energy and his dance movements were still great. When he announced his tour he looked much worse. In this announcement he talked about his last tour as if he had felt that he would have to die very soon. This is very sad.

Rest In Peace.

steve | 7/4/2009, 3:54 am EST

Energetic? I can bet you that if he didn’t die most of these people would see this video and BASH on him for being slow and lethargic. Remember, the minute before he died he was a questionable child molester and you could name thousands of jokes at his expense hypocrites. This is the best thing that could happen to him, now he is finally free from all of us.

Peter S | 7/4/2009, 9:31 am EST

Michael looks great. All the people with ill comments can’t even imagine how hard it is to come back after all the turmoil he went through in the last couple of years. And at 50. It takes an incredably strong person to go back on stage and perform like this. He looks fantastic.

P | 7/6/2009, 12:04 am EST

You call this energetic? Really? He looks out of it. I didn’t think he had it in him to pull of these shows and this footage doesn’t convince me otherwise.

Poor Michael. I’m glad he’s at peace now and not out embarrassing himself.

Mary61350 | 7/6/2009, 11:05 am EST

After days of watching many different programs about Michael Jackson I still can’t get enough!
I remember the 1983 show when he did the moon dance. I was LIKE what is that and how can a person do that!
As Michael Jackson himself said-no one wants to be mortal-you become immortal when your work survives you! MICHAEL JACKSON HAS BECOME THE MOST IMMORTAL PERSON I CAN IMAGINE!

Ann | 7/6/2009, 3:35 pm EST

I have no doubt that his performance would have been wonderful…

“SAVE NEVERLAND”
Neverland should become the next Graceland — Why? because the fans need a place to go. Michael’s children and family need it as a reminder of what Michael stood for. How can they sell it to strangers? Can’t Michael’s entertainment friends – money from his estate – family – save NEVERLAND! They will more than get their money back in future earnings within the estate. Neverland needs to be saved so it can become the next GRACELAND. Michael should be buried there. Why? can’t money be raised for that?? It sickens me that Neverland will be sold and it won’t go to Michael Jackson’s estate. It is hard to believe his family and friends didn’t come to Michael’s rescue of Neverland Ranch. With his come-back tour – he could have easily repaid the loan back. His kids, fans, all of his family, all know that Michael Jackson loved Neverland. Can Michael Jackson’s estate purchase the house? There should be money coming in now to make the purchase and leave it with Michael Jackson’s family. Please — to the people in charge of Michael’s estate — BUY BACK NEVERLAND. I NEVER believed that Michael Jackson was a pedophile. I NEVER believed he would harm any child. How can this congressman or anyone else for that matter accuse someone of something that they did not actually see? Are they God? Do they have ESP? No! Michael Jackson is not like most people. Michael Jackson was not raised like most people. Michael Jackson was gifted beyond words can say. I just watched the congressman again on CNN and it sickens me that someone would go after someone like that in death. Michael Jackson was a Daddy, a son, a brother, and has millions of fans across the Globe. Michael Jackson cared about kids and that does NOT make you a pedophile. He was found innocent. MJ could afford to pay his accuser because he wanted to go on with his life. Look at what happened to those people. That money was come by with lies and deceit. It is heartbreaking that so many turned their backs on MJ and he felt he had to hide out all of those years. We missed out on so much. Michael Jackson backed up his love for children by creating Neverland for all to enjoy. There were children who were ill, in wheelchairs, and all children were welcomed to Neverland. It was Michael’s home. It was his children’s home. So what…he had locks to his room – anyone would with as many people that were around Neverland. There were nannies, cooks, security guards, and other staff. He made a difference and cared enough about kids to create that magical place. The congressman and others talk like they know exactly what went on. Are they God? Michael Jackson left 20% to children’s charities. Will the congressman leave 20% of his estate to children’s charities? I grew up on Michael Jackson’s music. He made mistakes – we all do. The documentary on MJ was an attack on his character. It was horrible. MJ was honest and he paid the price. Do you think a real pedophile would be as honest? We lost out on Michael Jackson for all of these years because of what people thought may have happened. He was found innocent. It sickens me a congressman would attack his character after his death. Michael Jackson cared about all people – including our military. The secret door in his room was for safety. Many celebrities and even normal people have things like that in their homes. He was a world celebrity and it should not be considered anything but normal in his situation. I feel bad for MJ’s kids. I’m sure they miss him terribly. I’m sure he didn’t expect to die. Have some compassion people! MJ had compassion and it showed. It wasn’t fake – do you think so many people would have followed him if it was fake? There will never be another Michael Jackson. I don’t have all the answers. No one does. Just let the man RIP. The most criminal people and liars in society today come from politicians. Michael Jackson was a child himself. He never got a break. I for one am heart-broken over this great loss. Take away the celebrity – the man helped people and was genuine and kind. He had a caring soul. He was sensitive. He had compassion. We need more people like that in society today. I am educated and in my 40s now and grew up with Michael Jackson’s music. I remember watching his videos over and over again…for dance routines when I was a cheerleader in high school. We always used Michael Jackson’s music. I for one will always miss Michael Jackson. I hope Neverland will forever become a tribute to Michael Jackson and his children. NEVERLAND: What a beautiful and peaceful place! ~ Lubbock, Texas
