Drake Debuts Kanye West-Directed “Best I Ever Had” Video

7/2/09, 3:13 pm EST

Drake’s new video for his debut hit “Best I Ever Had” was posted on Kanye West’s blog today, with Yeezy himself serving as director on the vid. “Best I Ever Had” seems like it takes its plot line from chapter three of the Official Book of Porn Scenarios, with Drake starring as the high school coach of a voluptuous female basketball team. The girls stretch and dress in a steamy locker room as Drake raps in the Coach’s Office and the gymnasium stairwell. There’s a lot of slow motion running, a la Baywatch. On an intellectual level, the video makes Drake’s old show DeGrassi: The Next Generation seem like Masterpiece Theatre.

You can tell West is a relatively novice filmmaker, breaking the cinematic principle 180 degree rule a couple times during the clip, but for the most part he establishes that he has a pretty keen cinematic eye. (He definitely does better than music video vet Dave Meyers’ performance on Britney Spears’ “Radar” video.) Drake comes off as a burgeoning comic actor as well, comparing his ill-prepared team of buxom misfits to the Mighty Ducks and telling them not to let him down like the Ducks didn’t let Emilio Estevez down.

As Rock Daily reported yesterday, the much-in-demand Drake finally inked a record contract with Lil Wayne’s Young Money Records, a pretty obvious choice considering Weezy had taken Drizzy under his wing in recent months. Universal will distribute the debut LP. Drake will also be a part of Wayne’s America’s Most Wanted tour later this year. Great song, horrible video for a debut. Very disappointed. I blame Kanye for this; trying to ruin the boy’s career early.

I agree with Jalogs… Is it because he is Canadian lol. this video did not look like a product Kanye would produce!!!

DannyBoy410 | 7/3/2009, 2:26 pm EST

One of the worst vid’s I have ever seen..it is in poor taste..very poor production and I am a hip hop head and Drake has skills on the mic, but this song and video sucks! Sorry Drake!

The video really isn’t that bad.

The song itself isn’t half bad, at least when you compare it to the lamer crap that is out there. But the video could’ve been the chance for the song to improve dramatically. Instead we were treated to a 3 minute display of chicks in tiny outfits, showing off their bodies as much as they can. What a highly original concept. Of course, the person who directed it isn’t original himself, he rips off everything that is already there and calls it his own. I don’t think Drake could ever be pushed to try and better himself when he’s signed to a crappy rapper’s label. He is just surrounded with mediocrity. If he was really serious about this whole rap thing, he could’ve just gone indie. There are plenty of good underground rappers who don’t get recognition because they want to rap about stuff more meaningful than chicks, cars, money, etc. Drake might’ve used his big-label deal to represent. But something tells me that street cred and getting paid top dollar means more to him than say, quality music.

BTW, I posted here like three times before and it never went through. So if you notice the same comment by me made three times here, blame RS.

Besides the hot women… this video was poor in concept and production quality… damn Drake what the hell were you thinking?!!!

Aubrey, don’t give up the day job just yet.

This video gave me a vanarial disease

I think this video is really fun and playful. The flopping titties are amazing and the mascots doing somersaulting slam dunks really rules. I was captivated the entire time, and I think the lighting is also really nice. I love when the butch team rolls in, those girls are a little worried but who cares, they are hot.

dam! this video is awesome. one of my faves. big ups to kanye with the directing. (.)(.)

Although this was a typical hip hop song, it had a good beat and i will admit to thinking it engaging. Until I viewed this unsettling video. I felt extremely uneasy while viewing all of the “ladies” prancing onto the screen in minimal clothing. Have you heard of a bra!?! If men are truly aroused by such behaviour then why do bras even exist? And for those of you thinking this is funny, Drake and Kanye included, let me just say that- i find your passing rib-tickling.
