DEA Joins LAPD Investigation Into Michael Jackson’s Cause of Death

7/2/09, 9:47 am EST

The Drug Enforcement Administration will join the Los Angeles Police Department’s investigation into the death of Michael Jackson and probe whether prescription drugs might have played a role, the AP reports. According to experts, the DEA is often called in to assist in cases that might involve drug abuse, illegal distributors or the identification of drugs. “We routinely offer assistance to any agency regarding the Federal Controlled Substance Act,” Sarah Pullen of the DEA told CNN. “However, at this time, we have nothing further to comment about the death of Michael Jackson.”

Following Jackson’s death last Thursday afternoon, rumors quickly spread that the King of Pop suffered sudden cardiac arrest following an injection of a painkiller. As Rock Daily previously reported, Jackson’s nurse/nutritionist said the singer desperately sought out the powerful sedative Diprivan or Propofol to relieve chronic insomnia. An overdose of Propofol, which was reportedly found in a search of Jackson’s home, could lead to cardiac arrest. However, the LAPD’s several-hours-long interview with Jackson’s personal doctor Dr. Conrad Murray raised “no red flag” as to Jackson’s cause of death. “There was no Demerol. No OxyContin,” Murray’s lawyer said.

According to the law enforcement source, the DEA will look into various doctors involved with Jackson and examine their practices and their medical supplies, CNN reports. After the first autopsy on Jackson came back inconclusive, a toxicology report was ordered to determine what might have caused Jackson’s death. Results are expected in four to six weeks. “We know he was taking some prescription medication,” the coroner’s office said prior to sending out the toxicology report.

I hope the DEA getting involved will find out who was responsible for this tragedy. It’s too late for Michael but it seems like *someone* needs to be held accountable here. Chronic pain is a terrible thing as is insomnia, the latter making the former worse. If only one of the people closest to MJ could have taken the incentive to suggest other, less dangerous alternatives to the substances which appear to be invovled. He didn’t have a chance, with friends like these – who needs enemies? RIP MJ

Betty | 7/2/2009, 12:58 pm EST

Amen, to the DEA getting involved, and people being held accountable. I hate to say it, but it some time take a tragedy like this for a change to come. People need help, not bad drugs.

Rob | 7/2/2009, 1:58 pm EST

This is a terrible horrific ending to one of pop culture’s greatest heroes. But the fact is that MJ was 50 years old. He was an adult. No one sat there and forced him to take the drugs. It just a terrible situation.

RIP Michael Jackson. The person who most influenced my interest in music as a child is gone… The following comment is not in any way meant to disrespect; But DAMMIT why didn’t someone suggest a legal alternative to help this man with his chronic pain and insomnia? He had access to anything he could have possibly wanted!!! Sleep therapists, specialists, homeopathic therapists… Marijuana even. It’s legal in CA. Would’ve knocked him out. : (… So sad.

Lea | 7/2/2009, 4:20 pm EST

It probably was the same type of over-medication error that Heath Leger must have made. One pill too many and he just stopped breathing. Tragic. More controls are needed to prevent improper access to these drugs. Better stress/insomnia solutions, such as Shiatsu, should be promoted.

noway! | 7/2/2009, 5:23 pm EST

DEA? Examining the practices of these doctors? …Why? OxyContin would have been a “red flag”? Doesn’t the American Gestapo (DEA) realize there are totally legitimate uses for these medications? How do they know how much pain/insomnia Jackson suffered from? They don’t. I never liked Jackson, but I think it’s wrong that they’re trying to use his corpse to promote anti-drug propaganda. How low can you go DEA?

And sorry Lea, but Shiatsu? I think I’d Shiatsu myself if a doctor recommended that…

With billions of dollars, your already an institution. MJ’s health decisions are made by independent teams of doctors, just like the 3 independent computers on the shuttle! What went wrong?

mariee | 7/3/2009, 5:47 am EST

I think the people who tried to prosecute M.J killed him. After he was tried and suffered from the public scrutiny of being a child molester, his life started to down spiral. He was a victim of society’s cruelty. He was so rich that people are so bothered by that and most of the people did not stop until he was destroyed. The greediness of some people destroyed M.J. They did not stop until they killed him.

I miss Micheal so much. I try to forget about it but it is there everywhere I look. Only one Michael Jackson, one of the most unique people on earth and one of the most gifted of all time. I am just sick about this and I don’t even understand how it could happen. I am so pissed off… dammit why didn’t he get help. Didn’t he know how many people loved him and are now devasted? Wasn’t there something someone could have done for him or that he could have done for himself? I need an answer. Does anyone know what happened to him. Was it drugs or natural causes. I don’t understand.

Why doesnt the media announce that in the year 2000 Michael Jackson was actually in the Guinness Book Of World Records for being the only celebrity who gave the most to charity. This is a fact, people can google it. He also gave to 39 charities and childrens hospitals all over the world. Instead they focus on this nonsense blaming him that he was a drug addict. Drug addition/prescription medicine is an addiction, a disease smeone has. I also blame the people he surrounded himself with for not having an intervention. Sam scenerio as Elvis, same bodygaurds wrote deragatory books abut the man after the fact, yet they continued to get a paycheck. Such a shame really. Michael Jackson was a legend alot of people got to watch growing up, a icon for people in their late 20’s on. This is still an unbelievable thing that happened. I just wish more was focused on the good he did. I still get a lump in my throat thinking he actually died, it is certainly surreal. Such a shame really. Now the Prince will sleep with angels, may God always bless him and watch over his family as such a terrible time in their lives now.

Legend | 7/4/2009, 1:22 am EST

It’s funny since Michael Jackson passed last week I find myself blogging and commenting to defend him. Logging on to sites to defend a person I never meant, but meant alot to my in my childhood even until now. I used to sit with a creal bowl in front of the tv on Saturday morning cartoons tuned into The Jackson Five cartoon while my milk spilled on my footie pj’s. I used to dance to Thriller in my high school plays and dance to songs from Off the Wall at disco’s. Michael was truly a legend and an icon. I am not going to logon to anymore sites to read the negative things people and the news press are saying, it truly does not matter in the end. Michael will go down in history as an icon and brought such upcoming material to the music biz in the early 80’s and on, it will be noted. I am still in awe and shock he passed away, I feel so bad truly. He was my childhood icon, like Elvis was to many. I will look forward to respecting him by watching the funeral and not logging on anymore to defend him, in the end, people will see he was truly the King of Pop and will forever hold that title. I wish people would refrain from disrespect at this time being his family may log on to view such comments. May Michale Jackson rest in peace now, he is forever in my heart and in a place where he is free now, God Bless Him and his entire family.

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Sounds like he used to worship Allah, NOT GOOD.

Oh, my gosh! I can’t believe what I’m reading……

How come when someone famous has a drug addiction it is always referred to as an addiction to “perscription drugs.” I’m sorry, but they are no different than the kid across town who died from an accidental drug overdose last month. The only difference is that the kid had to buy his drugs off the street and they have enough money to pay people to write Rx’s for the drugs that they are addicted to.

I too was a big fan of mj in the 80’s. I had the pleasure of seeing him perform at Neyland Stadium during the “Billy Jean” days. He was a great looking young black man and a phenomenol performer.

The transformation that later took place was shocking. Let’s be honest here. The man had REAL problems. It is very clear by the changes he made to himself that the pain he suffered from was not physical.

As for the people that tried to prosecute him being RESPONSIBLE for his death… and being a “victim of society’s cruelty?” What about all the young boys that were his victims?

I wish I could remember mj as that flamboyant young man that I watched moonwalk across Neyland Stadium in the early 80’s while my heart skipped a beat. Sadly, the mj of later years didn’t resemble him in the least.

With respect to Legend blogger, you have indeed stolen my thunder, you said every possible thing I wished to.

How I also grew up with Michael’s music videos, and danced endessly at discos to his music. I am too, an 80s child, and even used to copy his costumes, I then forgot a bit about him, moving onto other bands, and scenes, but still he was at the back of my mind, lovingly loyal and lovingly there.

I wish to tell all the non-supporters that I do not wish to filter any more negativity on MJ, he is innocent. And these bloggers who intend on making MJ in passing more negative, well I just won’t read it, and go onto the positive fan sites, who are loyal and have stuck with MJ, in life and in death, and that is all his poor grieving family would wish for now, as they are too bereaved to even contemplate what the nasty desperate media are churning out daily.

May you rest now in peace Michael, they cannot hurt you anymore, and until we meet again in greener more unhurting pastures.

I don’t care which faith you were Michael, as now the muslims are saying defamatory things, as they are vicious and are really out there to seek his families’ demise.

Let go muslims, you cannot speak, as your God is ficticious and not worthy of mention at this very difficult time. A God who declares women are fully covered in black sheets is stupendous and ludicrous to say the least!

Christianity will prevail, not islam . . . .

God bless Almighty Michael Joseph Jackson, a Christian name anyway.

Mimi | 7/13/2009, 3:17 am EST

Michael Jackson was a Christian, and not a Muslim, no way!

So let’s leave it at that, and rest in peace Michael, those muslims or media cannot hurt you now.

RIP

Please people let us remember the journey of a superstar who was once told he was ugly as a blackmen at a very young age. From that the journey he persued was inward and outward but at the end it didnt matter if you were black or white! Michael Jackson lives.
