U2 Launch 360 Tour With Call to Space Station, Jackson Tributes

U2 paid tribute to Michael Jackson at the band’s first date on their 360° Tour in Barcelona, Spain, last night as Bono dedicated “Angel of Harlem” to the Thriller singer. “We wrote this one for Billie Holiday but we are going to play it tonight for Michael Jackson,” Bono told the crowd of over 90,000 at Camp Nou stadium. The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. also weaved bits of Jackson’s “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” and “Man in the Mirror” into the song, Reuters reports.

(Check out photos of Bono and Co. — and “the Claw” — from their kick-off gig.)

Performing on the innovative set dubbed “the Claw” for the first time, the two-hour-and-20-minute gig featured a mix of songs from the band’s latest LP No Line on the Horizon (seven tracks, including “Breathe,” which opened the show), as well as greatest hits like “Sunday Bloody Sunday,” “One” and “Unforgettable Fire.” Still, the band’s amazing new stage threatened to steal the show. The Claw features a 360-degree video screen, an awe-inspiring light show and apparently, a satellite linkup to space.

After the fourth song of the set, Bono rang up the astronauts on the International Space Station via satellite, who appeared live on the Claw’s 360 screen. According to U2’s official site, Bono asked, “Commander, can you see Barcelona?,” to which the astronauts replied, “Right now the most beautiful sight in our cosmos is the blue planet Earth” — a nice segue into “Beautiful Day.”

U2 continue their stint in Barcelona tomorrow, July 2nd, before visiting the other 30 cities on the 360° Tour. Their first North American show is on September 12th at Chicago’s Soldier Field.

“Ultraviolet”??? WOW… One of my all-time favorites. I hope they play it in New Jersey!

Richard | 7/1/2009, 10:11 am EST

Nice set list.

Although I would liked to have seen a few less songs off “Horizon” in favor of some nuggets from “Boy” or “Unforgettable Fire”.

Good to see they’re putting some of their more recent hits to bed.

Saint Subversive | 7/1/2009, 11:35 am EST

The space station call seems to have brought the entire show to a crashing halt, much the same way that the infamous Bill Carter phone calls from Sarajevo did on the Zooropa tour. Im sure it wont last long in the set, though Unknown Caller sounded outstanding live and they should definitely leave it in. Also, where is Drowning Man??

Im going to see them in Vegas this October (for the first time ever after over 25 years of wishing), and if they dont put New Years Day back into the set list by that time, Im going to be very disappointed indeed (it would be like going to see the Stones for the first time and having them skip Gimme Shelter). While they are at it, bring back Bullet and Fly, those songs would be absolutely stunning on a stage like this. Keep in mind, fellas, that for alot of us, this will be our first U2 show. Dont rob us of the rockers in lieu of whiny churchy crap like “In A Little While” (from the vastly overrated ATYCLB).

duende_71 | 7/1/2009, 11:49 am EST

I think it was gutsy to open with “Breathe,” I think that is a good song and maybe should have been the opener on the album release.

Saint Subversive | 7/1/2009, 11:52 am EST

I do have to wonder how some of the No Line material will go over in the American shows. I love Unknown Caller and knew it would make a good concert anthem, even as alot of other people said they hated it (and Fez Being Born, which is probably my favorite song from the album) … but Boots is almost universally hated by everyone (at least in the US where it flopped so badly that it hurt CD sales) and the No Line song, while being great on the album, isnt nearly as worthy of live performance as NYD and BTBS and other past staples.

I think they will be making a BIG mistake if they dont add at least NYD back before hitting the US. If people complain enough between now and then, maybe theyll read it and take note and fine polish the set to perfection. I have faith in em! :)

U2 Too... | 7/1/2009, 12:11 pm EST

Have seen the lads on 5 different tours – 8 separate shows, I am very excited about seeing/hearing “Ultraviolet” and “Unforgettable Fire” live – I cannot recall them being done outside those 2 specific album tours. To Saint S. – they have done “Bullet the Blue Sky” at every show I have been to, and frankly its been done to death – its the song I hit the beer line when its played – but respect others who like it. I am glad they are leaving that one off the list.

Personally I would like to see “Bad”, “Red Tree Hill” and “All I Want is You” addrd to the play list and drop “In a Little While”, “Breathe” and “Moment of Surrender” – but hey, its just what person likes…

Blessings to All

I need..... | 7/1/2009, 12:16 pm EST

Drowning Man.

Steve F | 7/1/2009, 12:23 pm EST

U2 only tour every five years so why all the new songs. With the
great body of work and
playing stadiums they should mix it up better. It worked on Achtung
Baby but that was a GREAT album.
Stadium full of people and you open
with four new songs ? It’s not that good !

d-nice | 7/1/2009, 1:21 pm EST

IT IS THAT GOOD! The new songs deserve to get played. But the set list looks kind of short to me. And, perhaps they could mix the order up a bit. Oh well, it’s only the 1st night. Give ‘em 5 shows to feel their way through this. U2 are the greatest band on the planet.

SundanceFW | 7/1/2009, 1:28 pm EST

“Breathe” to open the show? Uh oh. That song, especially how it starts, feels like the test for their next new sound, which I fear is designed to carry them through the deterioration of Bono’s voice. His voice had a resurgence for a few years, as he noted with “Sometimes You Can’t Make it on Your Own”, but their recent TV gigs and the dynamics of NLOTH showed signs of renewed decline. Although, I can imagine a cool extension of the strings and drum opening to the song providing a great build to their stage entrance.

I think “Magnificent” would have made a better opener, especially with an extended guitar, drum and sequencers for the build up. But then, they’re U2, and I’m not.

Glad they dropped “Bullet”, “Moment”, “Follow” and “New Year’s Day”.

Was hoping to see “Window in the Skies,” “October” and “Bad” make the set list, but oh well. Will be seeing them (for the 4th time) in the new Cowboys Stadium in Arlington on October 12, and am excited to hear the new stuff (except “Breathe”) along with the staple songs plus “Angel”, “MLK” and “Ultraviolet”!

Rock on, lads!

Steel Dragon | 7/1/2009, 1:31 pm EST

Seen them on every tour since Boy (in some cases multiple times) and I am a little disappointed in the set list myself. However they almost always open with 1-2 new songs every tour so can’t fault them for being proud of the new tracks. I’ve heard just about every song I’ve ever wanted to hear and with this massive stadium set, I want to hear Elevation, Bad, I Will Follow, New Years Day, and Gloria. But again, just a hardcore fan opinion here.

john ford | 7/1/2009, 1:39 pm EST

cant wait for vegas.

redraiderdc | 7/1/2009, 1:44 pm EST

That set list is shit.

Rabbitbunny | 7/1/2009, 1:58 pm EST

U2 are once again brilliant! Bono, thanks for dedicadin Angel of Harlem to Michael-we all miss him! Edge, you are the main reason for
The Unforgettable Fire! As Calvin and I were in mourning last Thursday a couple days passed on and it was a Bloody Sunday. And to Adam and Larry, your electronica rattle and hum beats are dope and out there. So let’s Walk On for the brave people of Iran, let’s all have Pride. All four of you are brilliant! I will see you all in September at FedEx in Landover! U2 are Magnificent.
Take care Dublin boys. All four of you ROCK HARD! U2, THANKS FOR BEING AN INSPIRATION AND GOOD FRIENDS TO ME!

Rey Mysterio | 7/1/2009, 2:08 pm EST

The title track, Breathe, Magnificent, Moment of Surrender, Crazy Tonight, and White as Snow all indicate a resurgence of Bono’s vocal range. Awesome album. Cant wait for the tour stop.

burningstar | 7/1/2009, 2:14 pm EST

Personally, I would like to see more of Achtung Baby, along with songs like “All I Want Is You” or “A Sort Of Homecoming”…I will be seeing them in Chicago, opening night of the US leg, and over the past few tours I’ve noticed the setlist between Europe and the US vary…so we’ll see. Either way, I will be stoked to see them again.

Ben | 7/1/2009, 2:14 pm EST

Happy to see them open with “Breathe,” as I’ve recently realized that’s my favorite tack on the new album.

JANIE | 7/1/2009, 2:38 pm EST

Here’s my wish (set)list…in addition to the obvious choices – one, with or without you, beautiful day, streets, new year’s day, pride, etc. I’d love to see them perform just once – do you feel loved, love comes tumblin, silver/gold, in god’s country, gloria, crumbs from your table, miss sarejevo, windows in the sky and your blue room (anyone remember the unrated Original Soundtracks 1 album with Brian Eno released under the pseudonym Passengers?)Better yet, next tour should be a show with just joshua tree, achtung baby and atomic bomb played in their entirety!!!! I can die and go to musical heaven now!!!

The King of Earf | 7/1/2009, 2:58 pm EST

“Breathe” is one of the best songs U2 has ever recorded.

Anonymous | 7/1/2009, 2:59 pm EST

Anyone catch the YouTube clip of them compltely botching ONE last night? It’s hilarious!… Go look it up.

Hipokcrisee | 7/1/2009, 3:08 pm EST

Bono and Co. flub one of their songs and are castigated.

Pete Doherty/Amy Winehouse/Liam Gallagher can vomit on stage and forget lyrics and they’re “cool”.

Anonymous | 7/1/2009, 3:11 pm EST

A good setlist (in chronological order):

I Will Follow
Gloria
11 O Clock Tick Tock
A Sort Of Homecoming
Pride (In The Name Of Love)
Bad
Where The Strets Have No Name
Running To Stand Still
In Gods Country
Exit
Desire
Hawkmoon 269
Angel Of Harlem
God Part II
All I Want Is You
Zoo Station
So Cruel
The Fly
Ultraviolet
Love Is Blindness
Daddy’s Gonna Pay For Your Crashed Car
Dirty Day
Mofo
Gone
Please
Sweetest Thing
Elevation
Kite
Vertigo
C ity Of Blinding Lights
No Line On The Horizon
Magnificent
Stand Up Comedy
Breathe

Q | 7/1/2009, 4:14 pm EST

This setlist is just good enough for playing in front of good sisters in a chapel, not in a stadium! I bet that people just fall asleep after a gew songs. I’m gonna see them in Amsterdam and honestly I really hope they will play less songs of Horizon. Come on boys!

Anonymous | 7/1/2009, 5:51 pm EST

wish setlist:

vertigo
get on your boots
mysterious ways
where the streets have no names
no line on the horizon
elevation
desire
all because of you
new year’s day
i will follow
two hearts beat as one
stay (faraway, so close!)
angel of harlem
sunday bloody sunday
city of blinding lights
magnificent
i still haven’t found what im looking for
walk on
pride (in the name of love)
with or without you
i’ll go crazy if i don’t go crazy tonight
beautiful day
one

Mucky Fingers | 7/1/2009, 6:49 pm EST

With that set list, “Sunday Bloody Sunday” and “Pride” stick out like sore thumbs. I love those songs, but they should be replaced with something else

U2 opened with six songs from achtung baby for the zootv tour. 4 from this album is a good way to show case it, then keep the audience interested with a mix of the hits.

kj | 7/1/2009, 8:32 pm EST

who cares?

SundanceFW | 7/1/2009, 8:55 pm EST

They hold THE BEST possible opening song in their arsenal, but always bury it later in the set. I dream of one day seeing them open with, “Where the Streets Have No Name,” as they did for most of The Joshua Tree Tour 22 years ago when I was a sophomore in high school and discovered U2 only a few months after their show in Fort Worth’s Tarrant County Convention Center where BB King joined them on stage(immortalized in the Rattle & Hum film).

I really think they could turn “Magnificent” followed by “Crazy” into a great opening combo, espcially if played how they did in some of their recent appearances versus how they’re presented on the album.

How great would it be to see them on a tour where they’re not so focused on promoting a single album but more focused on simply putting together the best show possible comprised of all of their incredible stage-worthy songs?

zAq | 7/1/2009, 11:23 pm EST

Rejoice
Tomorrow
A Celebration
Wire
Twilight
The Ocean

Pam Bonamusica | 7/2/2009, 6:58 am EST

U2 did a brilliant opening show! The stage looks very impressive and the concept to have the audience on all sides is absolutely great! The fact that they played “Angel Of Harlem” for Michael Jackson proves their deep humanity again. In the videos that I´ve seen on U2.com and YouTube I can sense an amazing atmosphere. A U2 concert is always A CELEBRATION! It´s good to hear songs they haven´t performed for a long time. It was a big surprise to hear “The Unforgettable Fire” which is one of my favourite songs of all time. Hopefully they´ll also play it in Berlin where I´ll attend the concert! “Ultraviolet” was also amazing. On Bono´s jacket there were red lights shining into the dark which created a very beautiful atmosphere. U2 also rehearsed “Drowning Man” which is another favourite song, so I hope they´ll perform it live in concert.

I get on my boots ´cause U2 is not a hill, it´s a mountain. They don´t have a choice but to lift me up and I get the chance to shout for joy. And I´m coming down with some new U2 mania ´cause my pulse is like loose electricity!

I wish U2 much, much luck, success and joy for their tour! See you on July 18th!

I’m not real thrilled with the setlist. I don’t mind the new songs except “Crazy” which I hate for some reason. I think the new album is their best since Achtung so I’m looking forward to hearing the songs live for the first time. However, do we really need to hear Angel of Harlem again or Pride or MLK. Pride has never come off very powerful live in my opinion. For this stage setup they need to play the big, epic songs in their catalog. Until the End of the World, The Fly, Hold Me Thrill Me. How bout Gone or Last Night on Earth or Zooropa or Electrical Storm. Mix it up boys and put some of those stale songs you’ve been playing for years on the shelf for a while. U2 have such a wonderful catelog of great songs that they need to take advantage of.

To Imp | 7/2/2009, 11:30 am EST

I have a sleeveless October tour t-shirt too. Do you still havethe mullet?

Pam | 7/2/2009, 11:49 am EST

U2 have so many outstanding songs in their catalogue, so it must be very difficult for them to choose the songs for the setlist. Whatever they´ll play, I´ll be happy of course. But if I´m allowed to be so arrogant to express my special wishes here I would love to hear:
Fez-Being Born, Acrobat, Luminous Times, Gone, The Fly, Zoo Station, Drowning Man, An Cat Dubh/Into The Heart (for me it would be already awesome to hear just one of these songs).

JJJ@Surf City Sounds Plus | 7/2/2009, 2:05 pm EST

I disagree with St. Subversive. I don’t think a space station call is a “crashing halt”. Kudos to U2. If they make one at each concert on the tour and weave it into the culture so much the better. Space at least is where the next and growing generations will survive only if people choose it. Otherwise, is the point of children a cruel one? My opinion….

flyboy | 7/2/2009, 6:21 pm EST

holy crap: ultraviolet. nice work.

obviously, you’re not going to make everbody happy. to those who are shitting on the band for not playing something you grew up listening to in your early 80s dorm room: go fuck yourself.

to those you taking an opportunity to bag on the new songs, well fuck you too. i’m sure the boys would love to play more lesser known/lesser played songs, but at the end of the day, its gotta be tough to leave out the streets/pride/wowy/one stuff.

ultimately, the tour is to promote the new stuff, and in true u2 style they front load a bunch of that going in. is breathe the best opener? is is as good as city of blinding lights? not a chance. but kudos to them for taking a chance. who am i to doubt what they think works.

anyways: we’re not at red rocks anymore people. i applaud them for retaining the title of biggest band in the world.

Andrea | 7/2/2009, 7:58 pm EST

U2 have survived for so long because they believe strongly in their new material and in their own strength as a band. They know that the new tunes are good and they are not afraid to test them and reinvent them on the road.

Fozzie Bear | 7/3/2009, 10:58 am EST

“Breathe” is infinitely better than “City of Blinding Lights”.

Pam Bonamusica | 7/3/2009, 12:28 pm EST

Mike | 7/3/2009, 2:14 pm EST

DrZ | 7/4/2009, 12:29 pm EST

I agree with the notion that the setlist is weak. I get pushing the new material, but any great rock show includes a couple of “suprize” treats from the past, which this setlist is SEVERELY lacking.I happen to agree with Imp on his batch of encore numbers. It’s no fluke that those are the best songs U2 ever did.I’ve noticed that the last several realeases and tours have gotten weaker and weaker, so what this really means is U2 has quietly slipped into grandpa-Rolling Stones mode.

Saint Subversive | 7/5/2009, 2:17 pm EST

In response to those who have seen past tours and dont mind them dropping certain songs like NYD and Bullet: keep in mind that for some of us, this is our first show, and in my case, Ive been waiting over 25 years for it. Hopefully Ill be able to repeat it next year when they come back to the US, but this could very well be the only chance Ill have to see U2 in my lifetime. I realize that some might be tired of hearing certain songs, but I cant imagine waiting decades for my show and then having them skip NYD of all songs, which could very well be the greatest they ever wrote. It’s a matter of personal taste, and U2 fans are probably the most diverse in their musical preferences of any band, just as the band is diverse in the styles of music they play (thunderous rockers and delicate ballads and Eno-esque ambient experimentalism, often all three in one song). Overall, Im happy with their setlist choices, but I still wont consider it a complete experience without that classic song. I was even hoping that Edge would be standing near me when he does that icy solo. They were gonna drop SBS too but added it back, so Im still hoping for NYD too. :)
