Stevie Wonder Ignites Montreal Jazz Festival With Classic Grooves, Salutes to Michael Jackson

If there was an unseen presence at Stevie Wonder’s free outdoor show at the Montreal International Jazz Festival last night, it was that of a fellow Motown child star. Wonder was brought in to launch the festival’s 30th anniversary with a bang. But before singing a note, he walked out on the General Motors stage, accompanied by his daughter, Aisha Morris, and somberly addressed the audience.

“I want for us to celebrate the life and the legacy of Michael Jackson,” he said, before criticizing gossip mongers and vultures who have exploited the late singer and focused on his darker moments. “We can continue to keep the life and spirit of this man’s music alive forever,” Wonder said before opening a generous two-and-a-half hour show with “I Can’t Help It,” the song he co-wrote on the Jackson classic Off the Wall.

At times, the posthumous props bordered on the bizarre. Wonder stopped the show three times to play Jackson recordings while he and his 14-member band simply grooved along. At one point, he directed everyone to sing “Michael, we love you so, never, ever, ever gonna let you go.”

It was a night filled with other surprises as well. During a warm, low-key version of the Beatles’ “Michelle” – a tip of the hat to the city’s French majority, perhaps – Wonder was joined by the collected voices of a crowd that stretched out as far as it was possible to see (the jazz festival’s Big Event concerts typically draw between 100,000 and 150,000 people). A spirited version of Miles Davis’ “All Blues,” with Wonder playing the melody on harmonica, was also a blindside pleasure.

Predictably, the oldies, loaded heavily into the final section of the show, drew the strongest reaction. “Uptight (Everything’s Alright),” “Superstition,” “Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I’m Yours,” “My Cherie Amour” and “Sir Duke,” among others, had the rain-soaked fans up and dancing. When it was all over, there was only one way to follow it. In an inspired bit of timing by festival organizers, fireworks lit up the sky.

It is an honour to have danced the night away. The unity of the people in harmony and peace celebrating Stevie and Michael is an experience I will cherish! Too cool! Thanks Stevie-we will step up to the plate in Montreal to remember and celebrate Michael for his love, music and tenderness forever.

An unbelievable experience and a good time had by all. A night I will not soon forget. It moved me sooooo.

Thank YOU Stevie!!

Christine Renaud | 7/1/2009, 9:38 am EST

What a great night! The rain stopped right as the show begun, and came back right as people were dancing on Jackson’s music at the end. People in the audience actually thought that “Michelle” was referring to “Michael”…
Stevie also mentioned that he might find himself a place to live in Montreal…
I could live with that.

Absolutely phenomenal performance- not only for the music but also for the overall spirit of the event. Stevie Wonder was the perfect choice for the opening of the festival and the jazz jams he did with the other incredible musicians in his band showed “Stevie does jazz with the same genius he brought to Motown and pop. The tribute to Michael Jackson allowed for the rest of us to show out respects for the remarkable legacy his music is for all of us.

Pierre | 7/1/2009, 10:19 am EST

It was one of those “I was there moments” that this wonderful city does so very well! Magical!

Stevie Wonder received an important honor, the Montreal Jazz Fstival Spirit Award that was also awarded to Paul Simon, Bob Dlan, and Leonard Cohen: a bronze designed by Miles Davis. Wonder and his phenomenal band showed mastery of jazz. Not only did they play a funky 3/4 version of Miles Davis’ All Blues (in this 50th anniversary of the Kind of Blue album), but they played one of jazz musicians’ top challenge: Giant Steps, by John Coltrane. Musicians were all generously featured in Chick Corea’s Spain, on which Stevie Wonder improvised playing the same line on two keyboards. A very generous concert (about 2:30 hrs) besides being an outstanding performance of some of the best music ever made.

An amazing night. A free concert by Stevie Wonder, who could’ve asked for better. The crowd was amazing and the rain was a gift from up above to cool us down. It was awesome that Stevie said he would have to find a place to live here. He sings so beautifully. I am glad I got to see something this precious in my lifetime

Amazing show, that incredible, wonderful voice, the way he associates us to the show, the incredible jazz and soul music talent, i felt chills and i still do, the general vibe was really good too, peolple around me were dancing and singing, and i could feel the emotion. He truly is a great musician, singer, showman. Even the rain gave us a break while he was on stage, to come back strongly on ‘Man in the Mirror’. It was really a magic evening, where you could feel his heart.

Very Grateful to you Mister Wonder.

A truly unbelievable experience…one where being “Black or White” did not matter….both black and white danced , sang and enjoyed an amazing experience together !

Bernie is funny | 7/1/2009, 12:30 pm EST

with Wonder playing the melody on harmonica, was also a BLINDSIDE pleasure.

ha! Clever.

Jen G | 7/1/2009, 12:40 pm EST

Yes, a great honour to share that time and space with Stevie Wonder last night. Apart from a few bad apples, it was also a great crowd, especially considering the tight space and rain…I love Montreal, and the Jazz Fest is always a joy.

Donna | 7/1/2009, 12:40 pm EST

The show was uplifting and inspiring, as only Stevie Wonder could deliver. Losing a music legend like Michael Jackson and witnessing Stevie’s heartfelt performance last night brought to light the power and magic of music and its ability to unite all. It was a wonderful experience.

jj | 7/1/2009, 1:18 pm EST

This is Why I LOVE STEVIE WONDER~~~I am soooooo hurt about MICHAEL JACKSON (damned)~~~we have experienced the best. thank you GOD~~~

Jon G. | 7/1/2009, 1:34 pm EST

Stevie is such a beautiful spirit, and a global treasure.

Julie | 7/1/2009, 2:07 pm EST

Amazing show! Stevie is such a wonderful performer, one of the best musicians in the world without a doubt. He was capable of bringing such a hard subject as it is Michael’s goodbye, and transforming it into a night of joy and memories – unforgettable show.

Colin | 7/1/2009, 3:01 pm EST

Not to be bitter, but Stevie and John Legend did a marvelous tribute at Milwaukee’s Summerfest on Sunday night, which was his first show since Michael’s passing. Wouldn’t the first tribute make sense to cover? Either way, it was marvelous and Stevie is such a beauty.

Colin | 7/1/2009, 3:06 pm EST

Furthermore, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal made the same mistake that Rolling Stone did, calling the Jackson recordings “bizarre.” What better compliment and sign of respect can someone give than to let the passed artist’s music speak for itself? How do you cover Michael Jackson? It’s can be done, but it’s tough, and maybe the best option is to leave it alone. I thought it was genius and quite humbling of Stevie.

Jesse | 7/1/2009, 6:01 pm EST

Agreed, the entire concert was fantastic, and the tribute to MJ was perfect. Ending with Man in the Mirror was great, sad and marvelous all at once. The entire crowd joined with Stevie (you could tell he was very emotional) in a final celebration for Michael that really brought everyone together and really drove home the momentousness of MJ’s life, music and what we’ve all lost, but also the legacy that we can all continue.

rachael | 7/1/2009, 9:06 pm EST

wonderful, great to hear stevie paying such tribute to michael, and even better to hear him criticize the vultures taking advantage of poor michael- thanks largely to us michael lived such a hard life- cant we just pray for him and give him his life’s wish- to be left at peace? if you dont like him then do it for the sake of his kids!

All my thanks to Stevie Wonder to accept singing in Montreal, it’s the first time I assisted to his show. A few years ago when I used to take singing classes, I song “I just called to say I love you” and listened to Stevie’s song many times in order to improve my own voice.
Even if it was packed, it was really worth going to listen to his songs. The only thing I didnt really like is that once again like in the media he started to talk about Michael Jackson. A few days ago I even had a nightmare, so much they only talk about MJ, it’s too much. I love MJ’s music, but not in a way to say “I love you Michael” or start crying like some fans. Okey it’s an international star but why losing a head bcz of someone you never knew & who doesnt know you ever exist. Dedication is fine but please dont exagerate.

Stéphane Giroux | 7/1/2009, 10:54 pm EST

Very accurate review, and it conveys the feeling of the show. Bernard, you should write more reviews :-)

It was a wet, miserable night because of the weather and the overcrowding of the festival. But all was forgiven the minute Stevie walked on stage. I enjoyed every minute of it.

Gardshow | 7/2/2009, 12:32 am EST

Saw the show and thought it was great. Wasn’t a big fan of the MJ recordings. Surprised the performance of Higher Ground didn’t get more attention as it was one of the livelier songs. Awesome time and thankful for the rain that kept the fence sitters at home!

Celine | 7/2/2009, 11:35 am EST

This was an aweful experience if you were not close to the stage. I couldn’t see the screen and everyone was pushing and shoving. The volume was too low and he dragged out several songs that practically put me to sleep. I love his albums but this was seriously an aweful night.

jen | 7/2/2009, 10:17 pm EST

It was pretty obvious that the SECONDARY reason why he didn’t sing when he played the Michael songs were for his own break. This was a non-stop 2.5hr show that had no intermissions. Obviously, you have to pay tribute to the King of Pop by doing it in a respectable fashion, but also because Stevie needed to stop for a break at some point.

David | 7/2/2009, 10:43 pm EST

Hi all, I have a question. During the show in montreal Stevie Wonder sang a kind of “arabic melody”. He made us sing along with him. Does anybody know the name of that song.

Great Man

Thanks

Thomas White | 7/3/2009, 1:30 am EST

I didn’t see the show, however, I think we need to respect and appreciate artists like Stevie Wonder while they are still here. If the passing of Michael Jackson has taught us 1 thing, it is that tomorrow is not promised and once we lose a legend…that’s it. They are physically gone forever. Stevie’s here for the moment…but can you imagine the day…? Let’s cherish, cherish, cherish!

FallenMir | 7/3/2009, 2:13 pm EST

One of the best concerts I have ever attended.. He was great !! and the fact mentionning MJ made him my hero.. God Bless you Stevie !!

I had a fantastic time due to the amazing music, really great personality of Stevie and his desire to show us all a good time. Great crowd, and the fireworks were a surprise superb ending. Could not have wished for a better evening.

I just want to say one thing: Mr. Wonder, thank you, thank you, and thank you. It was an honour to see and hear you. You are truly wonderful.

Dan | 7/4/2009, 12:19 pm EST

David – I also wish I knew the name of that arabic song that they played. Too cool. I love the groove. I’ve never heard it before. Doesn’t anybody know what it is?

Dan | 7/4/2009, 12:24 pm EST

If you journalists think it’s bizarre for an artist to play recorded music during a live show as a tribute to a dead friend then I would ask you if you think it is normal for a doctor to administer medication to his patient that kills him?

Anonymous | 7/7/2009, 2:14 pm EST

This was the first concert I have ever attended in my life and it was INCREDIBLE! All the MJ tributes were off the wall and everyone went nuts!

sandra | 7/8/2009, 3:08 pm EST

Unlike the media and MJ’s fans, Stevie had a close and personal relationship with MJ. He is grieving. Real grief caused by the loss of a close friend.

Chris B Milwaukee, WI | 7/9/2009, 3:09 pm EST

Historically Awesome event. Wonderful tribute to MJ not ODD but a tasteful and honest display of Love and Respect from one Artist and Friend to another.

Jay | 7/12/2009, 4:19 am EST

It s great to see other artists show appreciation for MJ. I will miss his larger than life persona and really wanted to experience the THIS IS IT tour. Thanks Stevie.

Rumina | 8/10/2009, 3:24 am EST

This reporter who says Stevie Wonder’s heartfelt homage to Michael Jackson was bizarre should take a hike. Too bad he hasn’t the heart to feel Stevie’s heart, to feel Stevie’s love and compassion for a great artist like Michael who was like an “antelope” on stage as Quincy Jones said. An artist which such an energy an spirit who has been disrespected and vilified and ridiculed. More than one should be ashamed for that. And Stevie, who has a big heart, expected the best from his audience. May all of us recognize substance and disregard all the irrelevance that surround us.

Deborah Ffrench | 8/28/2009, 9:37 am EST

Thankyou so mucb Stevie for bringing it back to the truth. The thing Michael loved most, children, was used as a weapon against him, and he was hounded by a merciless press for 20 years. This peerless, transcendent artist who was the the best of human nature will be profoundly missed. I have grieved and am grieving so hard this summer but I know Michael’s legacy is immortal. His work and beautiful soul will never be forgotten.

Actually Sandra, Michael said on countless occasions how much the love of his fans meant to him. Perhaps you think people cannot
‘know’ or ‘feel’ a person unless they are in close proximity. This is incorrect and demonstrates a profound misunderstanding of the nature and relaity of the connection between all living things on this planet. The force and quality of the soul of a person is in their work, their actions, their words as well as their physicalty. It is why Michael often said he wanted to
‘bind his soul to his work’ as Michaelangelo did. And that is why, we, whose who loved him could see the pain in his eyes and how much he was suffering and why me mourn. Let us mourn and remeber him and please do not hurt us and disparge our very real pain. I will not let anyone tell me I did not know the beauty and truth of this transcendent, peerless, beautiful artist and giver. What I feel is too real, and it is for millions of others also. If you don’t feel it, good for you, but do not tell others what they can and cannot feel. That is arrogant and unkind.
