Crosby, Stills and Nash on 40 Years of Music, Working With Rick Rubin

7/1/09, 5:32 pm EST

David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash are certainly aware they’ve been working together for a long time, but when Rolling Stone spelled out a number — 40 years — the figure still stunned the trio. “It certainly seems to have gone very quickly,” Nash told RS during a recent trip to our offices. “In my memory it’s like yesterday,” he said. “We love each other,” Stills added. Which is clearly what’s helped keep Crosby, Stills and Nash on the road and in the studio together for so long despite some major hiccups along the way.

The other major factor: creative synergy. “For me, it has to do with the music,” Crosby said. “I love both of them as human beings, but they keep coming to me with music that is absolute magic to me. It’s a completely different chemistry. Each human being has a completely different vibe, and the four of us [including Neil Young] is a completely different chemistry than the three of us or two of us or solo, and that’s fascinating and it keeps it fresh.”

The trio have been trying something kind of new during studio sessions with Rick Rubin for their upcoming covers album. “Stephen has been doing it on his solo tour and it really worked for him, and he said, let’s do it,” Crosby said. “It’s kind of a brave step, but it has been working.” Nash revealed the answer to the question, “What would be the audience’s reaction to Crosby, Stills and Nash doing other people’s stuff?” has been fantastic. And he says Rubin is a more “traditional producer” than people think. “He only concentrates on the music,” Nash said, describing how Rubin would insist on tinkering with chorus placement. And he listens “like nobody I ever saw,” noted Stills.

I saw them at Glastonbury on Saturday, and their Rolling Stones cover was amazing… I think this should be pretty good!

Isabella | 7/1/2009, 7:56 pm EST

Stills has been doing Dylan’s “Girl From the North Country” for a while on solo tour, and his contemplative version has an aching, melancholy air that really catches at your heart. I’m looking forward to this CD. (Plus, it should have CSN’s great cover of “Uncle John’s Band.”)

JJ | 7/1/2009, 9:44 pm EST

I was excited to see this article/interview. CSN are a timeless musical force. I still find their music to be powerful and moving, even all these years later. And they have so much great stuff beyond their famous late 60s period. The great tunes just kept on coming. I look forward to this new covers album. Way to keep going, CSN. You guys are loved.

deano | 7/1/2009, 10:59 pm EST

Forty years later, no one can touch their harmonies. Amazing longevity.

john | 7/2/2009, 5:24 am EST

Saw them perform in Cork Ireland on Monday. They put in a superb performance. It was as if time stood still.

“In my memory it’s like yesterday”

That’s probably because of all the weed that the smoked lol.

MikeZ. | 7/2/2009, 8:10 am EST

Great 5.1 recordings from David, Graham, and David and Graham together out there too ! Thos heavenly harmonies in surround sound HAS to be experienced by any CSN fan !

One of our fathers and his friend saw Stephen Stills in an exclusive solo performance at Parkers Nightclub in Seattle in the 80’s and said he was the very best, not only on acoustic but on the mic. They also saw them when the Republicans used the Who Cincinatti riot to eliminate rock’s allure to high schools, festival seating which meant no seats and plenty of mingling and dating action, but even in seats it was an intensely supernatural performance according to him and his friends, his wife said the whole tour featured an audience that kept their fingers crossed that Neil Young would join them on stage, he just breaking from the band. I believe the year was 1977. We’ve seen them on You Tube and they were incredible, especially the way David Crosby currently looks like Father Time.

JD | 7/2/2009, 8:28 pm EST

Saw them live last year and it was a great show. I have no idea what will be on their covers album but I heard there will be something from Love, quite possibly “Alone Again Or” a great harmony song I can easily hear them sing.

Beverly | 7/2/2009, 9:50 pm EST

Saw CSN in LA back in the 80s when Chocolate was their bassist and our neighbor, they were great then and great now. Nobody does it like CSN(Y). Looking forward to their new CD…I look forward to anything they do!

auramac | 7/2/2009, 11:30 pm EST

I hate to say it, but their voices and harmonies are frequently pathetic live- has been that way since the beginning. It makes sense their doing covers, because songwriting-wise they seem to have dried up- when’s the last time they wrote a great song? Stills’ voice in particular seems to be shot, and to me, he’s always been the key player. But the album sounds intriguing, and, believe it or not- I’m still a fan, and continue to listen to them as I do McCartney, the Stones, and now even Young- others who are obviously past their peak, on the basis of past achievements and continued respect and affection for these great artists.

the 5th beatle | 7/2/2009, 11:55 pm EST

another group of old fart geriatrics overdozing on viagra of past musical accomplishments getting ready to wallow their snouts into the trough of touring money.
Now, using technological viagra to make them sound like they were, they will tour for the money and because they need an injection of public ass kissing by their also viagra memories old fart fans.
pathetic!
I mean…look at crosby, stills, and young…they have more chins between them than there is in all of China!

railarson | 7/3/2009, 12:06 am EST

Did Stills have a stroke or something? Seriously. Does anybody know what has happened to his ability to communicate? He acts like he’s tripping on acid. I never thought I’d see the day when those two would be able to get a word in edgewise, let alone dominate the conversation to this degree.

Andrew Riggs | 7/3/2009, 5:51 am EST

Always liked CSN BUT at the London concert this week, there was a heavy reliance on 69/70 stuff. ONE magnificent record (CSN 1969) doesn’t make a legend.

Chris | 7/3/2009, 8:35 am EST

To those who have recently seen them perform; I will be attending their performance at the end of the month in Cincinnati. Who is in their band? Is Michael Finnigan on keyboards? What covers were played?

Harvey S | 7/3/2009, 10:26 am EST

Hey 5th Beatle,
Stick it where the sun don’t shine.
CSN are one of the greatest groups in the history of music and deserve immense respect just for what they wrote and recorde in the past. They are still very popular and even though some live shows are not up to par, they are still a great band, especially when compared to all the garbage that is out there today.

David Crosby has got to be one of the most pretentious a**holes in all of rock, but the guy has a way of writing songs that get under your skin…and stay there.

Sheilalala | 7/3/2009, 4:56 pm EST

Wow, what happened to respect for music legends? These guys are amazing

Boyda | 7/3/2009, 7:17 pm EST

I sometimes read threads at RS because some of the comments are funny. Some people are obviously writing just to stir up some shite. Some are just idiots who like to rain on other people. Some are much more stupid. “the 5th beatle” is way worse than even that. Worst post in the history of posts.

What a maroon.

David B. | 7/3/2009, 8:53 pm EST

It’s a shame, there is no respect anymore.I’ve seen these guys numerous times and was blown away each and every time. These people get on here and make stupid comments and don’t have a clue what they’re talking about.Just being idiots to get people upset, grow up.The classic rockers have earned and deserve much better. Thanks for everything you’ve given us !!

the 5th beatle | 7/4/2009, 9:36 pm EST

I am always amazed at the ass kissing stupidity…nay…it is worse than that, of those who defend such despots as csn[y] by attacking reasonable and objective posters as myself.
even when csn[y] were in their heyday it was nash and young who carried the other two lard asses). Now, they are in their hayday, where its the two lard asses who are regurgitating their wore out old material through their several stomachs like the old cows they are, it is again nash and youngs coats that are carrying the show.
Why would anyone dispute this?
Chow down again boys because, if the idiots on this blog are anywhere near representative of those out there who buy your crap this time around then…then…then…oh, why bother!

alabamalongtall | 7/5/2009, 10:05 am EST

I have been a fan of Crosby, Stills, Nash, Young, Taylor and Reeves since the start and with every change, I have enjoyed the way they have weathered each metamorphosis and continued to create classical music and as the chemistry changes, so does the music. They are fantastic writers and yes, though they are getting on in years … I would like to ask everyone out there if they are as good as they were 40 years ago, I know I have changed in some ways … but my love for rock and roll has always been with me!

Jim | 7/5/2009, 5:00 pm EST

What a drag it is getting older. No respect. CSNY are only about the best rock the USA had to offer during the 60’s and 70’s. Not much to remember since then except the tight riffs of Stephen, the harmonizing and songwriting of David and Graham, and the prolific output of Neil. Hey 5th Beatle, go back to watching O’Reily, listening to Rush and Fox news and being a flaming a**hole. I’d like to know who you respect!

me | 7/5/2009, 9:34 pm EST

stills didn’t have a stroke, and he’s not on acid. 40 years of touring and laying rock music has destroyed his hearing. he’s said on numerous occasions that’s almost totally deaf now. so consequently, nash and crosby have to take most questions cuz they know what was asked.

jomama | 7/6/2009, 3:40 am EST

My hat is off to the 5th beatle – that is some world-class trolling (and they’re bitin’)

Two thAngs these “ol’ hippies” got on all the new rock bands: Vocals that can be re-produced LIVE,
and “songs”!. Does anyone remember songs? Tunes? Beautiful music?

zack | 7/6/2009, 4:16 pm EST

these guys are great they havent lost it and the fact is that they are better than the crap coming out these days

Chris | 7/6/2009, 5:13 pm EST

To John, who posted their set list from London; Thank you very much. I ask about Micheal Finnegan because until the CSNY tour, he had been their man on keyboards since at least 1982, when I first saw them (I’ve seen them 9 times since). This guy has one hell of a voice, been on all their CD’s/albums. Heck, on Stills’ “Right By You” album, he had a vocal solo on the song “Can’t Let Go”. Unfortunately, Neil didn’t want him on the CSNY tour because, as he said he “didn’t want too many people on stage.” But as most of us know,,, that’s Neil. Well, CSN caved in. I would bet Mr. Finnegan was not happy. I hope there were no grudges with CSN and MF. I do hope he’s with them. I wouldn’t be suprised if he’s not, though. Thanks again.

Owen | 7/6/2009, 9:54 pm EST

We are very lucky to have CSN&Y providing us with their unique way of communicating the human experience with voices of angels. Having David and Graham perform with David Gilmore and Rick Wright prior to our great loss of Rick is a gift for generations. Shine On You Crazy Diamonds. For those who are too immature to understand what these artists have given to us, Eat A Peach!

To 5th Beatle: So, you consider yourself to be an objective and reasonable poster? You are truly delusional. Of course, just calling yourself “5th Beatle” verifies that something is lacking. Where does your talent lie?

Anybody who would dare to criticise Neil Young and his performance of late in concert as well as recorded obviously hasn’t seen his shows or bothered to listen to his music. He is still as good and creative today as he ever has been.No other artist from his era even comes close.Paul McCartney even came out at Neils recent gig during an oncore performance of ‘A Day In The Life’ and bowed down to him!..whats up with that?…you gotta see for yourself!

stills and crosby have more chins between them a chinese phone book! i watched their london concert also (got in free…after all…i am the 5th beatle) and did not see the same show the bozos on this site are saying they saw there or other shows. i saw a wore out group of old farts wheezing a coughing and leaning heavily on technology to enhance and embelish a sound that was 90% viagra and 10% nash!
come off it you csn bi-guys on this site, “yank my doodle, its a dandy!”

the 5th beatle | 7/7/2009, 9:15 pm EST

….and speaking of old farts, what has Muzek McCartney done lately? Nothing! Like CSN his music is Another Day, and for him to bow down to Young is typical old fart McCartney…playing to the crowd to maximize publicity instead of the music. Pathetic! His last CD and Youngs havent a decent melody between them…dried up old prunes (speaking of prunes, i.e., McCartneys face…HELLO!).
Come on…CSN, Y, and Macca are all spent forces that are hanging around like bad smells, lingering long after the freshness of the moment when the fart was cut…they are stale. A fart is only relevent when it exits, not when it wafts into the air and takes up residence in the back of the throat where it camps out out like unwashed hobos causing nothing but embarrasment.
’nuff said.

The Twins | 7/9/2009, 12:28 am EST

when artists (or in this case, “has beens and / or wore out old wankers) like csn announce they are doing other peoples stuff it means only one thing…the well has dried up! and in their case, looking back accross the timeline, this is true.
however, they are not dumb but…but…they do know a certain section of record buyers ARE dumb, and the same record buyers will buy any rear exit movements such as this trio of hand jobs from la la land spew forth. but, like minded hand jobs like the ones on this site will buy enough of the covers release to make csn think they are still relevent…HELLO!

railarson | 7/11/2009, 12:21 pm EST

Thanks for the constructive answer, “Me.” I was really wondering what had happened to Stills and now not heard (no pun intended) anything about his hearing loss. That makes sense. Bummer.

bummer | 7/12/2009, 5:40 pm EST

yeah…lifes a bummer for csn what with being millionaires, idiot fans still paying good money for crap output, idiot fans defending the same crap as being worthy, idiot fans making excuses for them, etc, etc, etc, yeah indeed, lifes a bummer for csn.
i think the same idiot fans partook once too often like their heroes of a substance[s] or melange thereof and see the world through the veil of the effect, which same veil is never ever reality and / or quality music.

can i push your... | 7/14/2009, 11:02 pm EST

its like a lion ripped the flesh off of a man,

so too should the music of csn suffer a ban,

then we can all sing real songs and real tunes like a real rock band,

and never again suffer csn crap that is so bland,

Landshark | 7/15/2009, 9:13 pm EST

Let the music begin.

I’ve been saving all my money to take Crosby there,

So I can buy him and Stills new wigs, new hai…ai…ai…ai…ai…ai.. .ai…ai…ai…ai…air,

Stone | 8/13/2009, 12:44 pm EST

Riggs – your comments are simply ridiculous. One magnificent record? Have you listened to rocknroll for very long, or just picking it up? Crosby Stills & Nash, Deja Vu, CSN, a shit-ton of solo efforts, 4 Way Street where they did some killer new takes on old Byrds and Buff Springfield songs (one of the best live albums of all time), and that’s just scratching the surface. I understand if you’re not a fan, no big deal, but your comment is just hollow to me. These guys don’t have to be at the top of their game to perform and be enjoyed by fans young and old. A little gristle is fine and good. If I want to see someone live at the top of their game in this genre, there are youthful bands such as Band of Horses, Fleet Foxes and Midlake that I’ll go watch (or Wilco for that matter). If I want to go see the guys who inspired these current acts, I go out on a summer night, and watch these ole guys – sounds perfectly magnificent to me

Andy | 9/3/2009, 12:26 pm EST

Stephen is almost completely deaf and wears hearing aids in both ears. It has affected his speech to a degree and that is why you see him enunciating so carefully in the video.
