Beach Boys’ Al Jardine on Fleet Foxes: “They’re Awesome!”

7/1/09, 1:11 pm EST

At last month’s Songwriter’s Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, the Beach Boys’ Al Jardine let Rolling Stone in on his latest obsession: Seattle’s Fleet Foxes.”They’re awesome,” he told RS. “They kind of have the Beach Boys vibe, too — very beautiful harmonies. They’re just taking the world by storm, and without any singles.”

Jardine met the Foxes when they came to his studio in Big Sur, California, where he says the group plans to do some recording work of their own, and adds the band has offered to sing on Jardine’s own upcoming A Postcard from California. Last fall, Fleet Foxes singer Robin Pecknold told Pitchfork of the meeting, saying Jardine was “was amazing. A really sweet guy,” and drummer Josh Tillman reported the band was given a sneak peek at a then-unheard track Jardine recorded with Neil Young, David Crosby and Stephen Stills.

The track seems to be, “A California Saga,” which will also appear on Jardine’s upcoming Postcard, and Jardine calls it a personal favorite. “It has truth and it has value. Neil Young and Crosby and Stills help give it integrity,” he says. No word yet on which track the Foxes may appear on, but Jardine says he hopes Postcard — also featuring appearanes by Brian Wilson and Beach Boys friend John Stamos — will have a labor day release.

Though Jardine admitted his focus on the new album kept him away from hearing as much new music as he’d like, there’s one other current act that’s caught his ear: Jason Mraz. Jardine says he likes the style of Mraz (who was presented with the Hal David Starlight Award for “making a significant impact on the music industry via his original songs” at the ceremony): “He’s very lyrically present and musically accounted for.”

Now this is news I want to hear. We need more of this kind of reporting. I don’t need to know what the Jonas Brothers had for dinner last night. Notice Al Jardine doesn’t have to wear a hat to cover his balding hair. Take that Mike Love!

Anonymous | 7/1/2009, 3:42 pm EST

Long live Al Jardine and Brian Wilson.

Mike and Bruce can suck it.

Mike | 7/1/2009, 3:52 pm EST

Kevin, what is the importance of Mike Love’s hair to this article. You’re another example of a negative ‘fan’.

AL PAL | 7/1/2009, 4:20 pm EST

KEEPIN IT CLEAN WITH AL JARDINE
Al is underrated and maybe my favorite Beach Boys. Dig it.

Al Jardine > Mike Love | 7/1/2009, 5:36 pm EST

What’s the importance of Mike Love’s hair to this article, “Mike”? It’s relevant because Mike Love is POS, the most negative force in the Beach Boys, and is killing the band acting like they are the “Beach Boys”. Mike Love has destroyed the band and has isolated himself from Brian and Al. The only move left is for all 3 of them to get back together and tour. But that can never happen due to all the destruction Mike Love has caused. Therefore, any time there is an opening to take a shot at Mike Love, you take it.

SurfRiderHawaii | 7/1/2009, 6:49 pm EST

Mike Love has patched it up with Al and actually sings on Al’s new album.

Kevin the Robot | 7/1/2009, 7:34 pm EST

Al Jardine > Mike Love: I couldn’t agree with you more. You made my day with your supportive post. Rollingstone had to go against my earlier wishes and post another Jonas Brothers story.

Hey Mike, your last name wouldn’t be Love would it?

Mike Love had an illegitimate daughter in the 60’s. He weaseled out of paying child support because they didn’t have paternity tests back then. In the early 80’s, Dennis fell in love with her, knocked her up and proposed to her. That’s a fact for all you Mike Love fans.

Uncover the Cornfield | 7/1/2009, 8:23 pm EST

Truth be known. Jardine and Love had mostly settled their differences. Jardine was going to tour with Wilson (did some shows in California, then said, “I want to finish my solo album” –remember back in summer of 2007), but started being the “jerk”, which is ALSO why Love kicked him out of the Beach Boys, after the other Wilson (Carl that is) passed away. Love had enough. Johnston has NO BALLS to get into the middle of any of this, as he’s got a “good gig”, playing with this touring thing called “The Beach Boys”. Love and Melinda apparantly have agreed to some sort of thing, which makes them lots of money, but keeps the Love and Wilson (Brian) separate. Anyway, who wants a fricken reunion? Johnston, says “NO”, Love says, “If Brian was willing”, Jardine says, “Yes”–but I doubt Love wants him back in the back, and Wilson (Brian) he could give a shit either way.

Those who clamour for a Reunion, are stupid. And as far as it goes for when Al gets this album released—he’s already polished it too much—and if he was smart, he’d hire a producer who could tell him ‘Enough is enough–will you finally put out the goddam thing’.

Fricken Beach Boys. Fricken politics. Fricken Egos.

And all we get our tours of all the old hits. That’s all most casual fans want to hear anyway–
“I remember my first hand job in the car–while listening to Barbara Ann”…Yeh..Right.

Alex | 7/1/2009, 10:34 pm EST

Mike Love may be an a-hole, but him and Bruce have totally revamped their live shows…sort of upping the ante in order to compete with Brian Wilson’s band. I used to swear off seeing Mike and Bruce, but these days I wouldn’t mind going to one of their shows. A lot of the credit for the improvements goes to Mike and Bruce’s lead guitarist and musical director Scott Totten. The only things they haven’t changed are the lame guest appearances by John Stamos, and the fact that Love still refuses to take off his hat!! Oh, and Bruce’s corniness…but that’s to be expected.

puttetang | 7/1/2009, 11:08 pm EST

Holy shit, will you look at that dude

anonymous 2 | 7/2/2009, 8:24 am EST

Al wears a toupee or plugs. That’s why he doesn’t wear a hat. Look at the pictures and video from the 70’s and early 80’s. He wears those big white hats or in some cases he looks really thin up top. Now. Magic. He has hair.

Black Frank | 7/2/2009, 9:47 am EST

Damn, that is one fucking freaky photo! He looks like something from MARS ATTACKS!

Jungleland2 | 7/2/2009, 9:48 am EST

The Beach Boys give Van Halen a run for their money in “best soap opera”

Truth is they are too old for a reunion that would be any good. The old guys know that they need a younger band to back them (McCartney, Ray Davies, Brian Wilson, Steely Dan) otherwise it’s just a bunch of bitter old dudes

NickU | 7/2/2009, 1:10 pm EST

I became a huge Beach Boys fan at the end of 1972, after hearing a few songs from the then unreleased “Holland” at a show at Capital Theater in Passaic, NJ. The place was a porn palace during the day, and a rock concert venue at night…I saw the Beach Boys some 50 times up until the time Carl died. After that, the touring group pretty much lost it’s heart and soul, which was already diminishing, largely becoming a Vegas oldies attraction. But then, Brian Wilson started touring solo. Wow! His backup band is truly sensational and Brian adds the “legitimacy” that today’s Beach Boys lack. I have nothing against Mike Love–he is, after all, an original Beach Boy–but only Brian Wilson’s concerts are generally an eventful tour de force. No need for a Beach Boys reunion, unless that takes the form of Mike, Al Jardine and Bruce Johnston appearing as guests at a Wilson concert–which Al has already done very successfully.

Suzy Cincinnatti | 7/2/2009, 1:10 pm EST

Mike Love is a predator who has sued the various Beach Boys and business entities for decades. Mike has made an incredible living off of Brian’s ohenominal music for 40 years (except for the cost of his seven (?) marriages). I do give Mike credit for never giving up. He’s still criss crossing the country, but what else could he do?

These guys are in their late 60’s. Their photos aren’t so bad. Mike is bald. Al is not.

Mike and Bruce represent 2/6 of the greatest American band. Their shows are what Carl Wilson called “the travelling juke box,” but I continue to go when they are close by. The audience is much older now than it used to be. Teens and 20’s used to come for the “beach party” thing, but anymore the audience is quite old. They still draw pretty large crowds overseas. The band is fairly good, and Mike’s son, Christian, sings a lot of lead now. He sounds a bit like Carl (rock’s greatest voice?). Bruce has almost no voice left, and Mike is very raw and flat. Mike has also put on a lot of weight since back surgery a few years ago. But, again, he’s 68.

Oh yeah– someone mentioned Shawn Love, Mike’s illigit daughter. She and Dennis had a baby (Dennis’ ultimate FU to Mike, his hated enemy). Many years later, Shawn became ill, and needed some of Mike’s DNA (bone marrow??— maybe..??). Anyway, Mike refused, and she died. Just another gruesome chapter in the BB’s history which also includes Charles Manson.

DeadHorse | 7/2/2009, 1:16 pm EST

I do not know what Kevin the Robot’s issue is with the Jonas Brothers. Let’s face it, they are more like the Wilson & Gibb brothers than a boy band. They sing songs about amateur & adolescent themes….a lot like the Beach Boys songs about surfing, girls, and cars. I’m sick of this Anti-Jonas sentiment. I Love the Beach Boys. I enjoy the Jonas Brothers. Along with them, I love the White Stripes, The Fleet Foxes, Wilco, and all other providers of catchy tunes. Why can’t we be friends?

Ray | 7/2/2009, 1:57 pm EST

Poor,Fleet Foxes.I didn’t notice a single comment here having anything to do with exactly why Al would be a fan; They are like a guitar – oriented modern day sounding Beach Boy’s,circa Pet Sound’s.The self titled album released last year (given 4-star’s)is quite an achievement. It’s just beautiful.

Anyway’s, as for the abomination that is Mike Love, I agree. The guy sicken’s me, and should not be allowed to represent The Beach Boy’s as he does.If you want to see a band worthy of that title,go see Brian Wilson’s group.I saw them at The Hollywood Bowl after the release of That Lucky Old Sun (yet another 4-star record) and they were incredible!

People give this Mike Love nonsense way too much attention. We should simply ignore that he’s still out there butchering Beach Boy’s song’s he may or may not have had much to do with, and go support Brian and the legacy he,Carl and Dennis left behind.

Also,go out and buy Dennis Wilson’s Pacific Ocean Blue. Now THATS an album.

Griff Simmons | 7/2/2009, 2:52 pm EST

Al Jardine’s brain is mush. Fleet Foxes blow.

Anonymous | 7/3/2009, 3:30 am EST

The vocal harmonies would be about the only similarity I can hear between these two bands. Fleet Foxes are more like the folky flip side to the Beach Boys sunshine pop. The Beach Boys from the mountains! (the mountain boys?)
Makes me think about sitting up in the trees on a hill overlooking the water at sunset and having a “smoke”. Aaaaahhh….
People, try to think about the music and not celebrity feuds and who’s bald and how much these guys have aged. Where are our heads? It brings the collective consciousness down into the gutter. Transcend!

auramac | 7/3/2009, 9:22 pm EST

I’m still trying to figure out if most people online are idiots or just very, very sick and immature.

johnny mondo | 7/4/2009, 5:39 pm EST

mike love is too much of a fucker for a reunion to happen. he’d only be doing it for the wrong reasons. i could care less about bruce, his contributions to the good stuff are minimal at best. i wouldn’t want to see that, i’d rather put money in brian wilson’s pocket with the wondermints and avoid putting it in mike love’s. though, i think al should join with brian and the wondermints and be THE REAL BEACH BOYS sans mike and bruce. rip carl and dennis.

Tute Uncommon | 7/4/2009, 9:12 pm EST

F Mike Love.

Tom Peak Nightmoves Magazine | 7/5/2009, 10:33 am EST

Wow Mike Love what happened to you with the fans! I have been a fan of the beach boys since the early 70s!!! Well to make a long story short. The beach boys are missing out!!! I hope time does not run out for them for a possible reunion tour. Well guys give the fans what they want, whats that? 50 years in 2011? Could they still do it maybe yes. The final tour could come then!!!!!

Not Jesus | 7/5/2009, 12:56 pm EST

As far as I am concerned the only “Beach Boy” that matters is Brian Wilson,Mike Love can go to hell.

Ralph DeWitt | 7/7/2009, 1:13 am EST

Al doesn’t have plugs or a rug. He probably colors it, but so what? I think a Beach Boys reunion would be wonderful! We still have 5 surviving members, Mike on lead vocals, Brian on keyboards, Bruce on bass, David on lead guitar and Al on rhythm. Add Hal Blaine and Ricky Fataar on drums, Matt Jardine,Blondie Chaplin, Billy Hinsche, and Dean Torrence and you’ve got an all-star Beach Boys concert!

Bobby Figueroa | 9/12/2009, 12:13 am EST

Perhaps the top contributor to the Beach Boy’s percussion section is Bobby Figueroa. That aside, his vocal contributions really “round-out” the true Beach Boy’s sound. A reunion without Bobby, would be like an Oero cookie without the white frosting center!
