Hear Levon Helm Return to Real Rock With “Tennessee Jed”

6/30/09, 5:48 pm EST

Levon Helm kicks off his new album Electric Dirt with the Dead’s “Tennessee Jed,” and it’s a fitting opener to the legendary Band drummer’s first proper rock & roll record in ages, writes Will Hermes in his four-star review. Helm returned from throat cancer with 2007’s mostly acoustic Dirt Farmer, and on Electric Dirt — recorded with Larry Campbell and the rest of the band from Helm’s Midnight Ramble gigs at his Woodstock, New York, home — Helm is ready to rock. The album hits stores today, and Rolling Stone has “Tennessee Jed” right here:

Well, listening to this song reminds me of FM radio back in the 70’s where you could hear Led Zepplin followed by It’s a Beautiful Day followed by Creedence Clearwater Revival followed by Black Sabbath followed by The Grateful Dead.
I guess my point is, there was a LOT of music I never would have been exposed to without the FM stations and their varied selections of music.
These days music seems so much more compartmentalized. So many pigeon holes and if you pick one and jump in, you have no idea all that you might be missing in other music styles.
It’s tough being a listener lately.
I like the Helm sound on this track and I’m glad he’s back out with an album. Now if there was only a radio station that might play it…..

Corporate radio kills music. The days of being introduced to something new and incredible via the radio died a long time ago.

Quote of the week, Erik! LMAO!!

The brilliant Levon is back – well, Dirt Farmer was awesome as well, but I can’t wait to hear this new album!!

I thought I felt bad listening to poor old Bob Dylan croaking away in his 60’s. But man, you can practically hear the breath whistling past Levon Helm’s gums.

Impressive song from a rock legend. The backing is top notch. And divalentino, just to let you know, this is how Levon sounded in 1972! Seriously! Funny, but true. Actually, it sounds like that throat cancer might have done him some good, since he’s probably not smoking anymore. He’s back at the top of his game. Let me play this a few more times….

I agree Krav. FM radio in the 70’s was amazing in its infinite variety. I loathe corporate pre-programmed radio which is probably why I spend a lot of time listening to public radio.

I remember when KZAP, the first great FM rock station in Sacramento suddenly became a country station-a day that shall live in infamy.

Tennessee Jed sounds awesome. You could stick this on any “The Band” CD and it would fit right in. Can’t wait to hear the entire song list. I’m going to the “Ramble” in three weeks – I’m pumped.

Thank god for satellite radio where you can hear music like this.

To divalatrino
When you “hear the breathe whistling through Levon Helms’s
gums, you are hearing a legend
making great music, but in your case when you hear YOUR breathe whistling through YOUR gums, its called a fart

Tennessee Jed was always a favourite of mine when The Dead did it, but this new one rocks with the horns. Thanks Mr Helm!
