Arcade Fire’s Butler on New LP: “Things Are Coming Together”

Win Butler says the Arcade Fire have begun songwriting sessions for their next record, the NME reports in the issue on stands now. “Before Funeral, me and Régine had this big room to rehearse in… People would come by and work on a song,” Butler tells the U.K. mag. “Now the guys are calling and wanting to come over. We’re writing and allowing the arrangements to happen. It’s exciting.”

After wrapping up a tour for Neon Bible, the Arcade Fire went off the radar, save for a few scattered appearances — including the staff ball during President Obama’s inauguration festivities earlier this year. It was part of a conscious decision the band made to take a hiatus, but Butler tells the NME that the band members simply found themselves playing together again over the last few months.

Butler was hesitant to confirm a timeline for the album’s release, but he remains optimistic: “It could be that we’ll play live [soon] and maybe we’ll end up bashing [another album] out fast. We’re in the middle of writing, things are coming together, it’s a great feeling.”

I saw Arcade Fire on Austin City Limits a couple of months ago. They were SO pompous. The singer’s wife is the worst. “We are here to rawk you and I have allowed my husband to sing at you. I like their albums but visually? NO!

Ridiculous. What’s it like going through life without a sense of humor?

These comments befuddle me – if you’ve ever seen them live before, you probably got a sense for their total lack of pompousness.

If you haven’t seen them live before, then you’re missing out on one of – if not the best – live act performing today.

Bottom line: if you like the band, but haven’t seen them live – make it happen; your love of the band will be multiplied 10 fold.

I saw them in KC with lcd soundsystem and it was the most disappointing show I’ve seen. I don’t know why everyone falls all over their nuts about how good live they are; they were terrible. And the “best live act?” Are you insane? Radiohead destroys them embarrassingly.

They’re almost a great studio band but live I was underwhelmed. I agree with coachmaddog that the whiny shrew needs to shut up. And yes, they are terribly full of themselves…

Also amazed by comments. Pure backlash reflex. Arcade Fire can be accused of many things I’m certain, but not pompousness and certainly not weak live shows.

Radiohead are a tremendous studio band, I have only ever been underwhelmed by their live shows. Arcade Fire, if anything, can only be accused of the very opposite.

These guys are probably the most overrated band around.. The first album was all-right, but it wasn’t the “be-all, end-all” everyone was raving about. Win Butler sounds like a whiny little bitch…

I saw them a couple of summers ago, they were great. I love both albums. (for what it’s worth)

The suck recorded, they sucked live.

Never saw them live but I like both of their albums. Of course you’re going to be disappointed if you buy into the hype. Even The Beatles are not the ‘be all end all’ and these guys are not John or Paul. But they have something special even if they have a need to believe in god and religion etc

Haters, you gotta love them…

Arcade Fire are incredible both on record and live. Full stop.

Some of you make it your mission to take things personally.

Like em or don’t like em. Done.

Love them! Love how their songs slowly reveal themselves upon each listen. Love how their music is filled with subtleties, and the unexpected. I like how you get the sense that they have meticulously crafted each piece in a way that demonstrates an understanding of music theory. After listening to them, very little out there seems to come close.
