Adam Lambert on Getting Jackson News: “Everybody Just Stopped”

6/30/09, 4:40 pm EST

As tributes to Michael Jackson pour into Rolling Stone — be sure to keep an eye out for our special issue, out next week — recent cover star Adam Lambert shared his memories of dancing around his parents’ house, lip-synching to “Beat It.” His early childhood was also heavy on “Thriller” (he cites his love of Halloween as a major reason). Lambert also revealed that “Rock With You” was his first American Idol audition song, which impressed one judge in particular: “Paula was really grooving out to it.”

Last Thursday, Lambert was at rehearsals for the American Idols Live tour, where early in the day he spoke with Rolling Stone and revealed the David Bowie songs that made his set list and other plans for the jaunt, which launches July 5th in Portland. In the afternoon, “I was singing ‘Whole Lotta Love’ and Lil Rounds ran into the room and whispered something into the producer’s ear. And we were all like, ‘What’s going on?’ ” Lambert says. “I kept singing and looked over at them with a confused look on my face and one of the producers mouthed to me, ‘Michael Jackson just died.’ I went, ‘What?’ and stopped singing. Everybody just stopped.”

Lambert says Idol rehearsals were canceled for the rest of the day, and the Season Eight crew took pains to avoid any negative press about the King of Pop as they digested the news. “What he was capable of as a showman, and what he brought to the world, outshone any of that,” he says. I am always eager to read an Adam Lambert interview. He is always so articulate and interesting. I can not wait for his Album and hopefully another amazing Rolling Stones cover.

Aww | 6/30/2009, 5:11 pm EST

So sad about Michael Jackson. :( But yay! Hes doing Whole Lotta Love! omg!

ew | 6/30/2009, 5:20 pm EST

Glad to read anything about Adam, but sad it had to be in reference to MJ’s death. Can’t wait for the idol concert…so happy to hear he’s singing Whole Lotta Love!

Hayley | 6/30/2009, 5:21 pm EST

So sad for Michael’s kids…. I hope they can still have good lives… but I am happy to hear Adam will be singing Whole Lotta Love.

AdamAddict | 6/30/2009, 5:25 pm EST

Love everything Adam. What is somewhat cosmic is that Adam is very MichaelJackson-esque in his wonderful singing, showmanship, performance abilities and charisma on state. He’s our Elvis/Jackson/Mercury, etc. for the new millineum!

Wanda | 6/30/2009, 5:25 pm EST

WHole Lotta Lambert! Can’t wait-Hotlanta July 31st.

lover4life | 6/30/2009, 5:27 pm EST

we all knew how much of an inspiration MJ was for Adam. i couldnt imagine how hard it was for him to realize what had happened. i cant explain my sorrow for MJ’s death, and as sad as it is im sure Adam will take this to motivate himself to be the next king of music!!! #adamisarockstar

Catalina | 6/30/2009, 5:28 pm EST

True that, Adam.

wowza | 6/30/2009, 5:31 pm EST

Adam IS a rockstar!! and i cant wait to hear him sing Whole Lotta Love!!!! wouldnt it be ironic if Adam was singing Black Or White when Michael Jackson died?

Lisa | 6/30/2009, 5:37 pm EST

Singing whole lotta love???? I will PASS OUT right there on the spot, no joke, man oh man, why do I have to wait so long to see the show (Sept), how will I last?

psychedelichardglam | 6/30/2009, 5:38 pm EST

I made a youtubevideo Tribute Michael Jackson RIP & Adam Lambert “Black or white” “You Can’t Win” “Rock with you”
Mj dead :_( but Adam still alive!!

Andy | 6/30/2009, 5:42 pm EST

Hope Adam will have the success like MJ one day…when I watch Adam performed, I cant’ stop smiling.

R.I.P. MJ

Jeff | 6/30/2009, 5:43 pm EST

I’m a karaoke singer too. How come my take on MJ’s death isn’t an entry in the RS blog?

AdamFan9000 | 6/30/2009, 5:43 pm EST

I loved his Whole Lotta love on AI but I think he was probably just warming up with that song. (Although what a warm up that would be!)
I believe his set list is Foghat Duet with Alison, then later Mad World, the euro-dance song, then Bowie medley Life On Mars, Fame and Let’s Dance. Anyone hear different??

Sharona | 6/30/2009, 5:47 pm EST

Adam, we love you and miss you. I wish I could see you on the tour, it’s just that the ocean is separating between me and America. I’m waiting for your official album. Miss you Adam… soooo much!

AdamFan9000 | 6/30/2009, 5:48 pm EST

Poor Lisa! September is truly so far off. Just wathc the videos daily and it kind of helps.
I just hope no one video tapes me moaning in the background like whoever that was for the CBS Early Show rehearsal. LOL

Paula | 6/30/2009, 5:51 pm EST

MJ was one of Adam’s Idols he along with the rest of us will mourn his passing. Always a treat to hear from Adam. I can’t wait to hear him wail “Whole Lotta Love” live. RS You should have Adam do daily or weekly reports from the road while traveling with American Idol.

terrys | 6/30/2009, 5:57 pm EST

I watched AMerican Idol tribute to Michael Jackson last night. I keep watching Adam’reaction to Simon’s comment- he cant believe when Simon said’ hes not on that league- he’s way up there than the rest.and that’s the truth- Simon is always dead right.

Trish | 6/30/2009, 6:00 pm EST

No, RS should wait to report from the road of Adam’s real concert from his debut album. anyway, miss Adam already!

RIP MJ

maui | 6/30/2009, 6:08 pm EST

RS Thank You for keeping us informed regarding our new superstar Adam, another cover please!!

Anonymous | 6/30/2009, 6:09 pm EST

AdamFan9000
He has said he’s doing 5 songs.
-Whole Lotta Love (apparently)
-Mad World
-Starlight
-Bowie Medley
-Slow Ride w/ Allison
I can’t imagine a more exciting set list!

Adam’s been mentioning MJ as an inspiration in interviews ever since the beginning of Idol.

relyec | 6/30/2009, 6:09 pm EST

Yeah I think the whole world stopped for a moment at the news of MJs death. OMG Whole Lotta Love so glad I get to see it, just sad I have to wait until august! Adam can carry the torch for the next generation!

lisa | 6/30/2009, 6:13 pm EST

I thought Adam was singing the duet with Allison, Starlight by Muse, and then ending it with the Bowie medley…..is he doing Whole Lotta Love too??

Pam | 6/30/2009, 6:15 pm EST

Okay, I heard that he was singing Mad World, Starlight by Muse, and then the David Bowie mix…he said in an interview that he was doing Starlight, It was a video, so I am pretty sure about it, and then the David Bowie…I don’t know. He might have just been warming up with Whole Lotta Love though…Whatever he sings will be amazing so I’m not worried

Marianne | 6/30/2009, 6:16 pm EST

MJ’s death is very sad news for everyone and we can see how much Adam was influenced by him in terms of his singing, fashion, dance moves and performance style. In some songs his voice even sounds like MJ’s. I’m disappointed that they’ll never be able to work together as it would have been awesome.

Alba09 | 6/30/2009, 6:28 pm EST

I wouldn’t be surprised if a medley of MJ songs gets added to the group setlist. It would be nice.

I don’t think the duet will be part of Adam’s 5 songs. He’s said he’s doing a few numbers from the season, so I wouldn’t be surprised if “Ring of Fire” is there too…his own favorite performance.

GataBella | 6/30/2009, 6:42 pm EST

it is kind of bittersweet and ironic that as one beautiful light passes away, a new one is being born before our very eyes. adam, please continue shining your person and talent on a world that desperately needs it. God bless you!

Isla | 6/30/2009, 6:46 pm EST

Thanks RS,for keeping us up to date with Adam. MJ’s death is such a shock, yet in many ways not a surprise. MJ experienced both triumph and tragedy to the full. But music doesn’t die. MJ’s legacy is alive and kicking in the veins of countless artists – Adam being one. And thanks Adam for the insightful comments you have made, especially about the liminal pathway MJ trod. You’re on a similar pathway, glamboy, and will never be boxed in.

A Glambert | 6/30/2009, 6:51 pm EST

Those familiar with music and Micahel Jackson will always remember how they heard the sad news of his death. My sympathy tohis family, mostly to his beloved childred. His early life is cause of events leading to early death. I am so glad Adam has such a well-adjusted loving family. Adam also provides so much pleasure listening to his singing and watching his performances.

Jen | 6/30/2009, 6:56 pm EST

Adam did love MJ… : (

Im glad he is singing WLL

Katya | 6/30/2009, 7:02 pm EST

MJ’s concert is my first & the only cocert I’ve ever attended. But, I just can’t wait for Adam’s first concert & many many more!

kira | 6/30/2009, 7:03 pm EST

i thought, all during american idol, that adam was the very first musician who could possibly walk in mj’s shoes. i still think so. i hope he allows mj’s influence to shine thru in all his recordings. we need another artist like mj, right now! and adam’s got the chops. more importantly, he’s got the courage.

AnnaW | 6/30/2009, 7:07 pm EST

Adam’s set list:
• Mad World
• Starlight (by Muse)
• Bowie Medley (Life on Mars, Let’s Dance & Fame)
• Whole Lotta Love
• Slow Ride duet with Allison
And possibly one more song from the show depending on whether the duet is considered one of his “five” songs.

Adam will be the ROCK STAR of the tour!!!!

LOVINGLAMBERT | 6/30/2009, 7:21 pm EST

I can’t wait to see Adam on tour. The only reason I bought tickets was to see Adam……Can’t wait for Mad World.

LOVINGLAMBERT | 6/30/2009, 7:22 pm EST

I can’t wait to see Adam on tour. The only reason I bought tickets was to see Adam……Can’t wait for Mad World.

Chrissy | 6/30/2009, 7:25 pm EST

Adam Lambert rocks my world. He sings Whole Lotta Love better than the original. I listened to both on utube. I’m gonna fall off my chair is he sings it on the Tour

SK | 6/30/2009, 7:28 pm EST

Rest in peace MJ. So sad. It’s awe-inspiring the influence that MJ had on the music business – Adam and countless others. I’m looking forward to seeing Adam on the AI tour and the release of his RCA Album.

Jennifer | 6/30/2009, 7:37 pm EST

I thought that “Slow Ride” was not a part of his 5 songs or Allison’s 3 (or however many she’s getting)?

Stephanie | 6/30/2009, 7:49 pm EST

I believe Adam is going to follow in the footsteps of Elvis and Michael in terms of becoming a music icon. He’s unique, cutting-edge and not afraid to take risks just like his predecessors.

Jo | 6/30/2009, 7:51 pm EST

RS is doing a wonderful job of keeping Adam in the spotlight. Can’t wait to see Adam in Duluth on the 31st. The torch is being passed to Adam, I just know it!

Cindy | 6/30/2009, 8:13 pm EST

Rest in peace Michael. Thanks for the Adam perspective. He will become as famous as MJ.

wicked glitter | 6/30/2009, 8:17 pm EST

I feel so bad for MJ’s family. I grew up listening to his music and watching his videos. He was beyond talented. That’s how I feel about Adam Lambert. I can’t wait to see him at the idol concert.

Teri63 | 6/30/2009, 8:42 pm EST

Congratulations, Jeff. If you’re a “karaoke singer…” like you’re implying Adam is, you must also have been contacted by RedOne to produce songs for your first CD!

Teri63 | 6/30/2009, 8:43 pm EST

Congratulations, Jeff. If you’re a “karaoke singer…” like you’re implying Adam is, you must also have been contacted by RedOne to produce songs for your first CD!

hayllie! | 6/30/2009, 8:51 pm EST

dawn | 6/30/2009, 9:01 pm EST

I have to agree, adam is the only talent i see that can even do mj music properly. adam is the serious perfectionist on the tour….sound like someone we know???

RigbyE | 6/30/2009, 9:03 pm EST

Thanks for keeping us posted RS. You are great with the Adam Lambert updates.

cindy | 6/30/2009, 9:14 pm EST

I am so sad about Michael Jackson, but his music will live forever.
Rest in Peace MJ…we love you!!!
As for Adam I love him too and cannot wait for the tour and his 19/RCA album release. Wow Whole Lotta Love..can’t wait.

Adam's UK Fan | 6/30/2009, 9:18 pm EST

Adam is extremely talented and is one of the most exciting performers discovered this year. He is now expected to be as famous as Elvis/Jackson/Mercury by many people. I hope Adam can cope with all the pressure and wish him tremendous success with the AI tour and his debut album by RCA Records this fall.
Thank you RS for this article.
R.I.P. Michael Jackson

helloteacher | 6/30/2009, 9:24 pm EST

Thanks for the Adam Lambert interview. I’m always interested in what he has to say. So sad about MJ. I watched the AI tribute last night. Adam’s performance of “Black or White” was even more stunning than I remembered. Looking forward to the Portland show on Sunday!

Poprock | 6/30/2009, 9:32 pm EST

thanks RS for keeping us updated on Adam–happy to hear he’s singing Whole Lotta Love on tour!
Seeing him in Cleveland—hope he gets to tour the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame while there—-they have a great display of Michael Jackson
RIP MJ

Glamazon | 6/30/2009, 9:36 pm EST

Thanks again for breaking more Adam news RS! You’re the best! Thanks for keeping new and intersting Adam info coming!!! Adam Lambert and RollingStone rock!!!! Can’t wait to see Adam on tour 7/18 in San Diego…

lindajean139 | 6/30/2009, 9:39 pm EST

Thanks for the interview. I am always interested in what Adam has to say. I think he is extremly talented. It was so sad Michael dies so young.

Karena | 6/30/2009, 9:41 pm EST

Thank you RS for Adam updates, and for always quoting him in context!
Adam is an eloquent speaker, and he is interesting to listen to and read about. His comments regarding MJ were real, they were of substance, and not just “rote” comments.
Thank you, Adam.

Karena | 6/30/2009, 9:45 pm EST

To Jeff: Thought I’d do you a favour, and let you know that “The Love Boat” is in dire need of a lounge lizard to entertain the Seniors on the Lido Deck! I’ve passed along a recommendation for you! lol

Karena | 6/30/2009, 9:48 pm EST

Rest…in…Peace, Michael Jackson. You will always be loved.

danette | 6/30/2009, 10:34 pm EST

RS thank you for keeping us updated. Very sad to hear about MJ passing he was great and a true talent! I would of loved to see Adam and Michael do something together.

prgemgirl | 6/30/2009, 10:39 pm EST

AWESOME ADAM SET FOR THE TOUR!!!!!! Maybe he can do an MJ tribute. Only he can do justice to the songs!!!!! Calling AI tour producers! I live in Asia and there’s no way for me to watch Adam except onn TV and YouTube so i beg concertgoers to please post all of Adam’s performances!!!!!!

Beverly | 6/30/2009, 10:40 pm EST

Adam, as the events of MJ’s life are flashing before us, I often think of YOU and I pray that you will always keep your family and LOVED/TRUSTED ones close to you and your money. The vultures are constantly on the job looking for weak links in the chain. You seem smart and tough and destined to deliver music with relevant messages. You’ve got my Love and best wishes.

MarCanadaForAdam | 6/30/2009, 10:55 pm EST

The day the music died! What a shock about Michael Jackson, and Adam’s impressions about it are so genuine. Adam is a lovely man, and I agree with others that he’s the only Idol who has done justice to MJ’s songs. Saw the repeat of MJ night on American Idol last night and Adam just blew everyone away. He had tears in his eyes from all the praise from the judges. Adam is such a touching and heartwarming soul! I will be at the Idol concert in Hamilton, Ont., in August – only for Adam. Wish he were singing more of his songs.

Marie4thofJuly | 6/30/2009, 11:42 pm EST

Thanks RS for seeking Adam’s thoughts, as he is clearly the most well spoken of the final 10. His version of Black/White was my first notice of a future superstar. I watched the AI tribute rebroadcast and loved it one more time. Thanks for all the Adam coverage RS.

rio | 6/30/2009, 11:56 pm EST

Thank you RS, always love your articles regarding the newest superstar..Adam..love him dearly!! He is an amazing talent and seems so very genuinely grateful & excited about his newest adventure. He has my support forever!

Jenn | 7/1/2009, 12:28 am EST

I feel so sad about MJ but somehow Adam is in my mind as rising at just the moment that Michael passes. I can’t help feel that as one great star passes another rises and Adam strikes me as that new rising legend. Sounds crazy, but I get that feeling. He is utterly charismatic and compelling like Michael. There is some symetry to it. I hope we aren’t putting to much pressure on Adam – I can’t help it, I get that feeling. Thank you RS for keeping us informed about Adam.

4Adam-MF | 7/1/2009, 12:35 am EST

‘love4life’ & ‘AdamAddict’, you read my mind. MJ’s in a better place now & i’m happy for him. I still miss him though. MJ’s my generation & i love him so much. If there’s someone who would pay tribute to MJ’s songs,it would be Adam & MJ will be proud. I can never get bored with Adam’s performances. Wish you the best Adam. Stay true to yourself. I know you have a good heart.

carlyNYC | 7/1/2009, 1:03 am EST

so glad that RS chose adam to comment upon the tragedy of MJ’s death. — not only is he the singular idol upon whom MJ’s influence is glaringly apparent (despite what all might claim as to his influence); but he also was the only one to truly do him proud in his MJ week performance. watching it again last night made me so proud of adam — made me see the MJ influence he proclaimed since his first blog on his musical icons — and brought home, of course, the enormous loss all of us feel with MJ’s passing. rip.

don | 7/1/2009, 1:38 am EST

God, Rolling Stone, you people must be Adam Lambert’s press agents.

Lynn | 7/1/2009, 1:40 am EST

RIP MJ. So sad we’ll never hear new music from him or see new dance moves from him.

If Adam sings Whole Lotta Love I will seriously make a complete idiot out of myself at the concert. I’ll be SOOO happy.

Lynn | 7/1/2009, 1:40 am EST

RIP MJ. So sad we’ll never hear new music from him or see new dance moves from him.

If Adam sings Whole Lotta Love I will seriously make a complete idiot out of myself at the concert. I’ll be SOOO happy.

luzrnaz | 7/1/2009, 1:44 am EST

yes it was great hearing from adam..but remember it was Kris who according to Paula, knew MJ’s catalogue and helped the other idol contestants during that week. He has said the first record he bought was
Dangerous and he did an admirable job on his MJ performance. This comment comes from an Adam lover.

pleazurs | 7/1/2009, 2:53 am EST

Adam is such a consumate (sp) performer! Can not wait for his album!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Meg | 7/1/2009, 7:53 am EST

Love everthing RS and Adam. RIP MJ. Our prayers are with you.

Gayle | 7/1/2009, 7:54 am EST

I am a 51 y/o married housewife that grew up with Michael Jackson. Adam, you did him proud singing Black or White on AI. I can’t wait to see your music videos. You are the bomb!

jones | 7/1/2009, 8:27 am EST

r.i.p michael jackson… u will always b remembered.

adam lambert!!! u physced me.

Colette | 7/1/2009, 9:14 am EST

RS, you are the greatest. Adam was a good choice to ask about Michael. He is such a good speaker and with such honesty and feeling. We will all mourn the loss of Michael, may he RIP. Adam is one of the few people who could sing every MJ song to perfection and with the feeling that MJ put into it as well. I wish he would do a MJ tribute all himself.

Anne McBryde | 7/1/2009, 9:22 am EST

RS – thank you for talking with Adam Lambert about MJ. Since the beginning he has talked of MJ being one of his idols and he is the only current entertainer out there that I think can potentially leave as big a mark upon the entertainment world as Michael Jackson did. You are wise to closely follow Adam’s career! Thanks!

GlamberTina | 7/1/2009, 9:42 am EST

I guess I’ll be freaking out if Adam will be singing WLL. There should be some medical vehicles outside prepared for freaking people like me :)

bridgette | 7/1/2009, 9:45 am EST

Oh my goodness, Whole lot of love was the best performance ever on American Idol. Adam Lambert is so drop dead gorgeous, with a out of this world voice. Mercy, he’s going to be the biggest draw on the tour and then his album will come out. He’s meant for superstardom. I can’t wait!

Trisha | 7/1/2009, 9:47 am EST

Hope Adam will follow MJ on creating geat music videos cause most of AL alumni are so bad!

Dorothy | 7/1/2009, 9:47 am EST

For every icon that passes, another is born. Unfortunately, Michael Jackson is no longer with us and will be missed terribly; however I’m 100% convinced that Adam will definitely be our new musical icon for the 21st century, and will out-do Elvis, The Beatles,& Michael Jackson and become our greatest entertainer ever. He certainly possesses the talent and has the perserverance to make it happen. May MJ rest in peace and may God watch over Adam as he begins his journey to the top.

One UK Fan | 7/1/2009, 10:04 am EST

Adam was emotional because this was the week that his photos of kissing his BF published in Papers and TV. I think he thought his AI journey would be cut short, so he appreciated Simon and Paula’s support.
Poor Sweet thing, Adam is…. cute

nika | 7/1/2009, 10:46 am EST

Adam has always said how influentian MJ was and when i heard he had died immediatly i thought of adam. MJ touched so many lives and Adams was no exeption. On another note, me and my mom are convinced that adam is going to be the next mega star that will influence the world. Following in MJs footsteps Adam will be the next icon.

Harry1982 | 7/1/2009, 11:16 am EST

Adam is the best! No other living artist who can surpass MJ but probably, and hopefully, Adam Lambert. He is just one big talented artist that this world has ever have.

spare me | 7/1/2009, 11:29 am EST

Yeah…lets keep mourning a child molester…great job guys.
I was a huge mj fan growing up too but wake the hell up.

Linda | 7/1/2009, 11:59 am EST

Spare me? Gimme a break – MJ was acquitted of ALL the charges, remember? Anyone who believes what the evil, sick media portrays is a sad example of a human being. Michael gave over $300M to charities – more than anyone ever of this planet. He was an Angel sent from Heaven and that’s why he is gone – he came here to do good work and give us beautiful music the world will never experience again. God took him so he no longer has to endure the pain of this crazy world. All you have to do is listen to Free Willy (You Will Be There) Best song ever written. Rest in Peace Michael!
PS Love Adam and wish him the best in his career.

Cheryl | 7/1/2009, 2:29 pm EST

Another great interview with Adam, sorry that the topic was so sad, RIP MJ.

Looking forward to much much more ADAM in future RS issues.

Bee | 7/1/2009, 2:57 pm EST

Thank you, RS. R.I.P., Michael – your music and influence is immortal. Just as one great musical influence on the world leaves us, the next is rising. It’s all about renewal, and I feel privileged to watch Adam’s rise and see the new direction music will take as he comes into his own.

Lissa | 7/1/2009, 2:58 pm EST

I love that Adam is not afraid to show his emotions. Watched the MJ tribute on AI and once again noticed the tears in Adams’ eyes and the chin quivering over the judges praise. Adam is an original and will be just as iconic as MJ was. Thank you RS for providing us with more Adam insights

Glambertfan | 7/1/2009, 3:33 pm EST

I can hardly stand to think about MJ’s passing, it’s so painful. Thank you RS for the special tribute issue, I will be buying it, and thank you for giving us more Adam.

MicheleDE | 7/1/2009, 4:16 pm EST

I am so pleased to see all the wonderful comments for both MJ and Adam here. I still find it hard to believe Michael Jackson is gone. :-( I re-watched an interview with Adam from when they were first in the mansion and the interview with Stevie, how he cited MJ as one of his big musical influences. Kris Allen also cited MJ, as well. Thanks RS for posting this interview with Adam. I simply adore him! AI tour should just let Adam sing as many songs as he feels like it. lol

Robert | 7/1/2009, 4:47 pm EST

Adam should do another MJ’s song or something totally new…don’t wanna see something he already did on AL like Slow Ride.

please, Adam…shock us again like you did Ring if Fire!

molly | 7/1/2009, 6:10 pm EST

I first saw Adam when he sang Black or White and I knew immediately he was something really special. Every week I couldn’t wait to see what Adam was going to do next. I even stayed up to the early hours so I could watch Idol live online as here in UK it wasn’t aired till later in week. To me he is the most exciting performer I’ve ever seen. And, even more importantly, he is worthy to be the world’s next biggest star. He’s bright, optimistic and inspiring. I just adore him. Can’t wait for his album and (fingers and toes crossed) a UK tour sometime soon.

mad4adam | 7/1/2009, 6:33 pm EST

RS – I love your articles on Adam and the reader’s comments are always the best. At first, I wasn’t going to go to the AI concert tour, but Adam is so compelling as an artist that I just HAVE to see him UP CLOSE! The rest of the performers I’m not so interested in this year. I was so busy rasing kids (Adam’s generation) when MJ was at his height that I missed out on Michael at the height of his career, although I love him as a child performer. But I’m not going to miss out on Adam’s rise to stardom. Whole lotta love!!! Whoooohoooo!!!!

sara | 7/1/2009, 6:34 pm EST

Thanks so much for the Adam interview-LOVE him!!!

RIP MJ

MW | 7/1/2009, 6:53 pm EST

RIP MJ – you were one of a kind and a beautiful human being.

Adam – you are one of a kind and a beautiful human being.

I love that RS keeps Adam in it’s news stories. Like the others here, I have thought from the first I heard him, that he would be another music legend. I bought my first RS magazine when Adam was on the cover. My husband used to get it years ago. I check the web site often now. As long as you continue Adam coverage, I’ll be a RS fan.

maryann | 7/1/2009, 8:21 pm EST

The death of Michael Jackson is truly devastating. I was shocked and couldnt believe it. But amazingly, I immediately thought of Adam lambert. I dont know why. Could it be that I was hoping Adam could start to be the next music legend?

madie | 7/1/2009, 8:23 pm EST

I am really glad that Rolling Stone continues to interview Adam. I hope the magazine always puts Adam on the cover. Thanks, Rolling Stone!

jeremy | 7/1/2009, 8:25 pm EST

Adam Lambert is a great singer. I am waiting to buy his debut album.

abigail | 7/1/2009, 8:26 pm EST

I hope Rolling Stone would put Adam Lambert on the cover again when his debut album comes out!

dido | 7/2/2009, 10:40 am EST

I was really thunderstruck when I heard about Micheal’s death
I’m so happy to be always up-to-date to Adam’s news, I’m really excited

terie D. | 7/2/2009, 11:11 am EST

Since I can’t go to any Adam’s Idol tour concerts I’ll have to be patient to watch whatever TV programs feature him and wait for his CD from RCA/19. I’ve played all his performances OVER and OVER. Michael Jackson’s death was so tragic. I, too, thought of Adam when I heard about it. I’m still following the reports. Those POOR children. However, I have all the confidence that GOD will watch over them.

T | 7/2/2009, 11:12 am EST

I hope Adam would be able to achieve the success MJ had & hope Adam’s album will be outrageous. Come on Adam, show us what you can do & let’s shock the world!

terie D. | 7/2/2009, 11:17 am EST

BTW I have subscribed to Rolling Stone for the FIRST time ever in hopes that there might be another article or even better COVER of Adam since I missed the other one and in hopes of maybe getting a back issue. Hope so!!!!

Kelly | 7/2/2009, 1:52 pm EST

I am 49. I think its particularly hard on music lovers of my generation to see MJ die because he was our age and we grew up with his music. I am devastated. I remember when he first came out with “ABC” and “I want you back”. I was a kid then- I knew he was great but just assumed that was the norm. Not so, we have never seen anything like him since. He was legendary.

This reminds me of the day John Lennon died, although this seems to be upsetting me even more. Its just so sad.

Just subscribed to RS | 7/2/2009, 5:55 pm EST

When I saw you were having Adam Lambert write an essay on MJ in addition to all your other Adam Lambert coverage these last months, I bought a 2 year subscription.
Love how Rolling Stone keeps us Adam Lambert fans happy – wai smart business choice!

Regina | 7/2/2009, 5:56 pm EST

You´re totally right Adam..

Vicky | 7/2/2009, 8:34 pm EST

RS, thank you once again for proving yourself cutting edge. I have resubscribed once again due to the fact that your coverage of Adam Lambert has been nothing short of Adamazing! Keep the interviews coming!

Natalie | 7/2/2009, 11:27 pm EST

Michael jackson is a legend in itself truely king of pop and to be honest i dont think i have see anyone do a redition of michael jacksons black and white as good as what adam lambert has done. Adam really did MJ’s version of black and white justice. MJ Lives

samantha | 7/3/2009, 1:38 am EST

Thank you again Rolling Stone

Retha in south africa | 7/3/2009, 4:13 am EST

Rest in peace Michael Jackson. You’re a legend. You trully Rocked my world. I love you!

Adam, American Idol was total bliss this year. You made it the success it was. Your rendition of MJ’s black or white was out of this world. If we, in south africa were able to cast votes, you would have being an outright winner. Love you and cant wait for you album release, and possibly your tour to south africa. All the best:)

chrissy from Australia | 7/3/2009, 7:47 am EST

MJ will never be fogotten for his genius …may he find peace at last.
Adam words can’t describe the sheer pleasure of watching the Adam Lambert *oops* I mean American Idol Show …I loved your passion and your talent …your sweet heart shone through …so did your sizzle …”Burning Ring Of Fire” almost set us all aflame.
While “Mad World” made me cry.
Love your work …You are our Idol.

Jenny | 7/3/2009, 12:52 pm EST

Trish | 7/3/2009, 1:18 pm EST

We didn’t get to see the rerun of AI’s MJ’s night here in Asia. Wish we’ll have it soon. But it was the night I was stunned and in awe of ADAM’s electrifying performance and shredded the competition. I can’t believe it was on AI and not a concert though I was already an ADAM’s fan from his audition.
I don’t remember ADAM tearing up on judges’ comment but I remember always his humility. Maybe because that was actually the very first time that he got very glowing deserved praises from all 4 judges. Before that, he has been criticized from the start as being theatrical and not emotionally connected. But as humble as he is, ADAM said he appreciated all these and made him aware and tried to adjust to AI audiences which is totally different from acting & singing on stage plays. ADAM is a consummate performer/artist but had to tone it down for the AI audience wh is not ready for his flamboyance. But the world is ready for him especially with the passing of an over the top icon Michael Jackson!
ADAM is a sensational phenomenon the world needs now.
We miss you, ADAM, here in Asia.

That note. That one note. I want to ROCK with you. That one voice on that one note. Who else could hit that note with the force, that purity, that power than Michael Jackson? That one note sends chills through me. I hope you will find peace, Michael. Adam, I think you may be able to fill a part of Michael’s shoes one day, but I pray that you will never suffer as Michael did. A huge Adam fan. here.

Michael; it was a tragic irony that you left us much too early. Your music will continue as long as the earth remains. Your legacy will not fade until this generation ceases. I hope (it is too late to pray) that you made it back home to God, I hope that is where your soul is and where you are, dancing and singing before his (God’s) throne now, and worshipping Him instead of being worshipped. If you did not make it, only you and God know and know why, but I hope you’re home, safe, and with God for all eternity. Wherever you are, I hope you are o.k. Michael. “Michael are you o.k.?

Garry – Long time fan

MJ RIP,WE NOW HAVE A NEW RISING STAR IN ADAM LAMBERT,HE IS THE FUTURE!!!!CANNOT WAIT TO SEE ADAM IN DALLAS,OUR BOY WILL ROCK THE HOUSE!!!PLEASE ALL OF US SHOULD SAY A PRAYER FOR MJ CHILDREN BECAUSE IT NOT EASY TO LOOSE YOUR FATHER AT SUCH A YOUNG AGE!

michael and adam fan | 7/5/2009, 3:56 pm EST

I am thankful for Adam – I really am – I am a huge fan…I don’t think he will fill Michael’s shoes..nobody can..ever..he did what he did since he was FIVE..and he was a dancer..did the beatbox thing..as well as able to direct..and most of all..he was a humanitarian who not only donated hundreds of millions..but he cared and was involved in helping starving and ill children..I KNOW Michael is in heaven because he has always been innocent and a better person than probably any of us. He kept his head held high and gave us great music that I have listened to my entire life. The media tried to tear him apart but his fans knew..it’s funny because when the media reports something..people think that they are reporting it because it’s true or that the media must have gotten it from somewhere..when really it’s the media who starts it..stats show that 75 percent of the time..the fans were with Michael..despite what the media tried to tell us..and they drill the same thing in our heads over and over..you read one story you read them all..you watch one celebrity gossip show..you’ve watched them all..I have learned that through following Adam…they don’t let things go..I have always been a fan of Michael and never believed the negative crap..but now as I really learn and read about him and how lonely he was and how he just wanted to help people..he said God put him on this earth to use his ability to help people..and that is what he did..I weep for him daily…I can’t get over it..I feel like I lost a close personal friend.. RIP Michael – and I hope you are happy in heaven and getting to live the childhood you never had

JenJen | 7/5/2009, 7:29 pm EST

it still a shock to me that michael is really dead. i was eating when i heard the news from the living room i ran and plopped right in front of the tv. its sad that some people will remember him because of his legal issues. i am praying for his family and kids. iam hoping for adam to be as big as michael jackson. love adam and rip mj.

mom_shell | 7/5/2009, 9:28 pm EST

RIP MJ such a great artist and such sad life. My prayers are with his children. As for Adam he is just starting his way to greatness, thank you RS for keeping us posted

debolisa | 7/6/2009, 2:49 am EST

Adam.. I do believe you are the NEXT SUPER STAR, so be ready for it and we are waiting for your own album, hope it would be awesome..and make ur videos as great as MJ did, be perfect and creative and proper to be seen in decade

MJ… I will be missing you, I keep watching ur DVD over and over and over again… RIP

Amy | 7/6/2009, 5:15 am EST

I was in high school in the 80s. MJ was a big part of my memories. It was like losing a part of my childhood. Just recently, I have felt the same sense of wonder and awe in Adam. It is amazing when you experience this (also saw it in U2). It seems however Adam has an advantage…he is doing things HIS way and has the unconditional love and support from parents who raised him right. Plus he is starting on his journey at a later age. Adam seems to have the maturity and strength to deal with superstardom. Adam, PLEASE surround yourself with a good team who will not only support you but will keep you in check! Just like with MJ, you have many fans from varying backgrounds and age groups who support you. Cannot wait to see what is next for you!

texas | 7/6/2009, 9:09 am EST

I was lucky to have grown up with Michael Jackson’s music as a child in the late 70’s and has a teenager in the 80’s. I remember gathered around the tv to watch MTV (back when MTV stood for music television) and waiting to see the premier of Thriller, Billy Jean, Beat It videos, Etc. Michael Jackson was a great artist and watching the videos when I got home, memories of my childhood just came flowing back. There would never be another artist like Michael Jackson. The world has truly lost one of the greatest artist there as ever been.

texas | 7/6/2009, 9:17 am EST

I was flipping through the channels on a boring Tuesday evening and came across American Idol during Michael Jackson wee and that was the only was I watched that episode, then Adam Lambert came on singing Black or White and I was hooked. He was the only singer that did justice to Michael Jackson’s music. Can’t wait for his album to get released (not the fake one) his real album.

Holly | 7/6/2009, 6:44 pm EST

I am tearing up just reading these comments about Adam. I know I am not alone in knowing that the future holds nothing but greatness for this true talent! I heard Adam once tell his fans to come along for the ride. This is one ride I’m not gonna miss! RIP M.J. You were very special and will be missed!

Ningko | 7/6/2009, 8:37 pm EST

Everytime I hear MJ’s songs I feel like crying. Its been a week now but the pain is still there.. Worse of all they featured the pic of him on the stretcher and that makes more sad!!! Btw I also thought of Adam after that.. Hopefully he can be the next best thing.. He won’t be filling Mj’s shoes… MJ can’t be replaced just like Freddie Mercury , Karen Carpenter and last but not least Elvis!!!

ORTechy | 7/6/2009, 11:07 pm EST

It is true that we have all felt somewhat shocked by the news of MJ’s death but what he has left for all of us is and incredible gift to share with generations to come. Adam Lambert will continue to wow all of us as did MJ in the years to come!

Jayson | 7/7/2009, 4:29 am EST

Michael Jackson can’t be replaced like people A, B, C?

Are you sure he wasn’t replaced already somewhere along the silent years? =)

Liesel | 7/7/2009, 7:29 am EST

I’m welling up reading this. I have been a fan of Michael since Thriller when I was 10. He will be sadly missed and like other artists of his stature, never replaced.

Adam? I wish him the very best, in every part of his life. He is an exceptional talent by any standards and always comes across as an intelligent and genuinely lovely guy.

With the people that he is being compared to, he has big shoes to fill. If talent and charisma count for anything, I look forward to many years of enjoying that glorious voice and those magnificent performances.

JEFF,
please let us know when top producers and songwriters and legends of the industry extol your virtues as a singer and performer and offer to work with you like they have Adam.

Joan | 7/7/2009, 12:40 pm EST

You know, whenever I recall the comment that Adam is not ‘emotionally connected’ to his music, I have to laugh. I generally think the comments of the AI judges are on target, but that one was so far out of the ball park, I have to wonder. There is no other performer in my mind that can bring a song to life like Adam Lambert. He is so utterly connected to the music; his interpretation and phrasing is honest, open, and right on the money. That is why so many love his work and persona, including me, a generation older than him.

PAUL | 7/8/2009, 3:00 pm EST

I REMEMBER THE FIRST TIME I SAW JACKSON DO HIS MOONWALK ON TV.THIS WAS PART OF HIS KICK INTO THE MUSIC WORLD.AND HE MADE HISTORY IN THE MUSIC WORLD.REST IN PEACE MJ.YOU TOOK THE WORLD BY STORM.

Jan Vicory | 7/10/2009, 1:31 pm EST

I loved all the previous comments on Michael’s passing, which was indeed a sad thing. I do agree that Adam is indeed a rising star and only want him to be the greatest Adam he can be — not a copy cat of anyone else. When he does that, he will give us the greatest gift of all — himself!

Carolyn | 7/10/2009, 9:55 pm EST

I went out and bought the MJ issue only because Adam supposedly has an article in it. He better have one in there. I would never had bought the thing. $10 for it. Not that I don’t appreciate MJ but I won’t buy a magazine just because MJ is on it. If they had Adam again on the cover than I would have bought a ton of them.

Adam's leading lady | 7/13/2009, 10:23 pm EST

No one can replace the remarkable Michael Jackson, but i have heard from people that ADAM is the next big thing! :) hope so!

mikarno | 7/15/2009, 5:16 pm EST

I remember Adam singing Black or White, and when he was done, Paula Abdul said she hoped Michael heard it. And I hadn’t heard about MJ in a long time, and thought it was touching the way Abdul said it, something in her voice that really seemed to care about Michael. It was a sweet moment.

Truly amazed by this revelation. It seems MJ fans like Adam. So did I watching his performace last Idols. I gre up with MJ and I feel the sadness of a part of my life being over forever. Sadder still becoz Michael died a sad lonely man in private. I hope his kids gave hime some joy. Where were we during those grim days of the court case?

Mikayla | 10/31/2009, 10:35 am EST
