Kid Rock, Lynyrd Skynyrd Praise the Badass at “Rock and Rebels” Tour Opener in Florida

About halfway through his set at the Cruzan Amphitheatre in West Palm Beach, Florida, Friday night, Kid Rock saluted the Twisted Brown Trucker Band, the 10 excellent musicians backing him. “There’s no Pro Tools, no tapes, no trickery,” the man born Robert James Ritchie to a suburban Detroit auto dealer said. “This ain’t no American Idol bullshit; this is some American badass shit.”

It’s true: Kid’s band, anchored by dynamo orange-’froed drummer Stephanie Eulinberg, kept the opening night of the Rock and Rebels tour on high musical ground, rather than plummeting into parody. Was it nice to see a live concert that really felt live? Yeah, Auto-Tune is destroying music (arguably). Does that make Kid Rock more authentic — let alone badass — than Carrie Underwood? Ladies and gentlemen, Kid Rock is an entertainer. He’s got a lot more PT Barnum than Bob Dylan in him. But he puts on a solid show.

Kid took the stage silhouetted against a white sheet. Stooped over with his long hair hanging out of his trademark bowler, he looked not unlike the old cartoon hillbilly character that had played on the video screen behind Lynyrd Skynyrd about a half-hour earlier. Make no mistake: Ritchie is playing a character. He launched his career by being a white rapper from the Motor City while Marshall Mathers was still in puberty. But a few years ago, he began emphasizing the rock side of his rock-rap hybrid, and by the time he was singing “Sweet Home Alabama” on his ‘08 hit “All Summer Long,” Kid was embracing his backwoods FM radio-rock roots.

Kid played all the hits: “Cat Scratch Fever,” “Tumbling Dice,” “Everyday People.” He played his own songs, too — “Bawitdaba,” “Rock N Roll Jesus,” “Cowboy.” The funniest part of the evening was when he took a turn behind the turntables, scratching nimbly with one hand while pouring himself a shot of Jim Beam with the other. He also played piano, drums and guitar.

Lynyrd Skynyrd have been playing without Auto-Tune for a few decades now — and it showed when singer Jonny Van Zant warbled off pitch and pianist Peter “Keys” Pisarczyk (replacing Billy Powell, who died in January) stumbled over the keys in their final song, which was, of course (shout it!), “Free Bird.” Skynyrd, like Rock, paid tribute to troops overseas and the USA. Like Rock, they also flashed the Confederate Flag — a “rebel” insignia — around. It was not a stylistic statement echoed by the audience in any numbers.

Being a rebel, of course, is an iconic pop music pose. Skynyrd’s songs celebrate being alone and staying the same. That’s the myth of the cowboy/road warrior that they cling to, like change you can’t believe in. Kid Rock’s stance is slightly more evolved. He acts like a womanizing, anti-intellectual drunkard, but in a funny duet with Eulinberg, he also made fun of just what a silly character that is.

Kid played almost an hour and 45 minutes, with no encore. He and Skynyrd never shared the stage, not even during “All Summer Long.” Having already toured together last year, maybe the two generation of long-haired rockers no longer need to high-five.

Kid Rock’s Set List

“Rock N Roll Jesus”
“Son of Detroit”
“Tumbling Dice”
“You Never Met a Motherfucker Quite Like Me”
“Devil Without a Cause”
“Lowlife (Livin’ the Highlife)”
“Keep Your Hands to Yourself”
“Cocky”
“All Summer Long”
“Amen”
“Rock N Roll Pain Train”
“Everyday People”
“Cowboy”
“Blue Jeans and a Rosary”
“One More Time”
“Half Your Age”
“I Am the Bullgod”
“Picture”
“My Name Is Rock”
“So Hott”
“Bawitdba”

I give the guy credit for being able to play several instruments… but he writes terrible songs. He is more like American Idols than he realizes, in that he is a very talented musician who does not have much redeeming creativity.

chuck t | 6/29/2009, 8:12 pm EST

dont forget that “the kid” used autotune on “only god knows why”…way ahead of the curve ;)

Hahahahaha | 6/29/2009, 8:24 pm EST

He may have a talented band backing him but all of his songs are just samples anyway.

What Kid Rock lacks is creativity, and if Lynyrd Skynyrd was truly still Lyrnyrd Skynyrd and not the Gary Rossington tribute band, they would never tour with such a fool.

dlt | 6/29/2009, 8:45 pm EST

All Summer Long sounds more like Werewolves of London

St. Robinson | 6/29/2009, 10:43 pm EST

Good call Chuck on Rock using Auto-Tune…all the same his show f*cking rocks. I saw him play between Run DMC and Aerosmith a few years back, right before Jam Master Jay went down, and they all came out for “Walk This Way”. I’ve seen probably 300 shows of all kinds, Radiohead to Bela Fleck to Femi Kuti to Rebirth Brass Band to Matchbox 20 to BRUCE to Drive-by Truckers, and it was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. Say what you want about Kid Rock’s albums, originality, etc., but he and his band throw down one HELL of a great rock show.

LYNYRD SKYNYRD | 6/29/2009, 10:54 pm EST

Whoa, Whoa, Whoa, let me get this straight: this article is about Kid Rock, who makes crap music and has been around since the 90’s. So RS is just going to snub Lynyrd Skynyrd, a revolutionary rock band thats been around for 30 years and still kickin?? thats not right…

farfignewton | 6/30/2009, 8:23 am EST

I don’t own any Kid Rock tunes, but I do go see the show every time he comes to town. Always reasonably priced and worth every penny.

Ummmm | 6/30/2009, 10:35 am EST

It’s 2009. Lynyrd Skynyrd was formed in 1969. That’s 40 years, math boy. Ronnie Van Zant was KILLED 32 years ago! Saying the band has been around 30 years is laughable.

bobby | 6/30/2009, 10:59 am EST

Lynyrd Skynyrd are an all-time classic. Kid Rock is an opportunist. Autotune sucks. For a real songwriter check out cory branan.

dave | 6/30/2009, 2:08 pm EST

What’s with all the Kid Rock haters?
I’m a big Skynard fan but the article is about how Rock can put on a good show. Just give him his due, he’s outlasted all those worthless rap rock bands and writes good beats. I’m sure he’s made a little more money and has more fans than all of you dolts commenting how bad he is. When you see him flying over you in his own private jet, I dont think he gives a sh*t about your opinions!!!

DoctorBlues | 6/30/2009, 4:03 pm EST

His music sucks, He just uses everybody else shit and ride there coat tail. Put him by himself and he can’t even sing for shit. If he didn’t have the TBT to bail him out he would be knowbody….

T | 6/30/2009, 4:30 pm EST

I’ve always loved Skynyrd’s music and attended a show during the ‘87 reunion. But right now with one original member left, is it not time to retire the name?

arch stanton | 6/30/2009, 5:27 pm EST

Cobain is glad he is dead now…….

purple | 6/30/2009, 6:08 pm EST

Rockin Dallas | 7/1/2009, 10:13 am EST

I can’t wait to see the show tonight at Superpages.com Center!!!

Connie P. | 7/1/2009, 1:53 pm EST

I just got home from the Hotlanta concert and my 6th time to see Kid Rock live. I don’t care what anyone says, KID ROCK ROCKS! I have NEVER been disappointed by any of his concerts. He is an awesome entertainer that gives his fans their money’s worth. I am ready for the next time that he comes close enough for me to see him and the TBT band. And, of course, Lynyrd Skynyrd was great too. I’ve been a fan of theirs since I was a kid and they were recording in Muscle Shoals, Alabama (which is about 10 miles from where I live).

ez rider | 7/1/2009, 5:18 pm EST

to all you skynyrd bashers…… FUCK ALL YA~LL. They still are a southern kick ass band

Christine | 7/1/2009, 9:15 pm EST

Wow a variety of opinions! I was at the Kid Rock/Lyrnyrd Skynyrd concert few days ago in Tampa. The opening band was Johnathan Tyler, they were also great, check out their song “Devils Basement”, I got front row seats, WHAT A CONCERT! Kid Rock ROCKED! Gary Rossington played directly in front of me the entire set, I could not help but visualize the bands past, all they been thru and Johnny Van Zant carrying on his brothers dream. They are Lyrnyrd Skynyrd with all heart and soul. I believe the reason they call it the “Tribute Tour” is because they had no choice, Van Zants widow sued them for using the name Lyrnyrd Skynyrd. Best concert I have ever been to, after skynyrd played one of the back up singers walked over to me and handed me a bouquet of beautiful flowers…It was awesome..There sitting in a vase right now.. I was so lucky to be able to experience all that talent so up front and close! I still am on cloud nine from the experience. Hope Ya All Come Back To Tampa Real Soon!

Christine | 7/1/2009, 9:26 pm EST

P.S. The drummer Stephanie Eulinberg for Kid Rock is awesome. My son was also lucky, she thre him her drum stick!

sexdrugsrknrll | 7/2/2009, 2:34 am EST

Never seen Kid before, have tickets to Hershey Park Stadium 7/31 and LOOKING FORWARD TO IT !!!
To all of yous that say Kid has no creativity ~ you must not listen to his songs very well. He speaks the truth and does the Rock/Country people proud. You go Bobby and keep it real, from the soul and heart. See Ya 7/31 front row !!!

deede | 7/2/2009, 8:11 am EST

I am thoroughly disgusted with this negative crap about Kid Rock. Who do you think you are?? Bob is awesome! He is real, down to earth, and he doesn’t need anybody’s back. The man is a genious, an inspiration. I love you Bob. I can’t wait for you to come to Vermont. Thank you.

Test | 7/3/2009, 12:07 pm EST

does this work?

leithel | 7/3/2009, 9:13 pm EST

After reading all the posts so far i have come to the conclusion that all the Kid haters are retarded. They don’t spell, speak or write very well and they are just plain jealous. Children please, why can’t we all just get along, or better yet you haters Get the F along. Kid doesn’t have the time to care about you beggars, liars and dweebs. Seriously i think he is needed in Pam’s bedroom and just can’t find the time to care what the spoilers think. He does does care about his fans, his roots, and making the badass sound. It’s not cocky mother f’er if you back it up!

dgtownnurse | 7/4/2009, 9:39 pm EST

Seeing Kid next weekend in Indiana. Have NOT missed a show within 3 hours in the last 5 years and will not miss one.

JD | 7/7/2009, 4:37 pm EST

Don’t knock it until you try it… If you have never seen Kid perform live, you have no idea what you are missing. I was not a fan until I saw him live. I have seen him 8 times, each show is unique and entertaining. Go to a show and then comment…

CrazyCapricorn | 7/12/2009, 7:46 am EST

OMG! The comments on this page are just down right ignorant. Kid Rock is a music genius. He can sing every genre of music, play every instrument, writes all his own music, and always leaves you wanting more.
As for comments on his All Summer Long hit yes he mixed that song with Sweet Home Alabama and Werewolves of London which stems back to his rap history of mixing.
Skynyrd is the real deal! They have out lasted hundreds of bands even tho they have lost several members. They sound just as good today as they did the first time I saw them (cough cough) ….years ago.
So, if this isn’t your kind of music quietly move on and shut up!

schoolgirl | 7/21/2009, 3:05 pm EST

What the hell is wrong with you people? Kid Rock Rocks!! Rock and Roll Jesus kicks ass and Lynard Skynard is still as amazing as they ever were. I guess some people just wouldn’t know good music if it hit them right between the eyes.
