While President Barack Obama has yet to make a public statement about the death of Michael Jackson, Obama’s senior adviser David Axelrod told NBC’s Meet the Press this weekend that Obama wrote to the Jackson family to privately send his condolences, Politico reports. “The president has written the family and has shared his feelings with the family, and he felt that that was the appropriate way to go,” Axelrod said on air.

“The president obviously believes that he was an important and magnificent performer,” Axelrod added. “Obviously, he led a sad life in many ways as well but his impact is undeniable.” Axelrod noted that Obama was prepared to speak about Jackson during a press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel last Friday, however no reporters asked the President about Michael Jackson.

Axelrod’s comments echo what press secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters last week following Jackson’s sudden death. “I talked to [Obama] about it this morning. He said to me that obviously Michael Jackson was a spectacular performer, a music icon, and I think everybody remembers hearing his songs, watching him moonwalk on television during Motown’s 25th anniversary,” Gibbs said, “But the President also said he had aspects of his life that were sad and tragic. His condolences went out to the Jackson family and to fans who mourned his loss.” No word whether Obama’s written letter to the Jackson family would be made public or if the President himself would issue a statement regarding Jackson.

isnt there more important things obama should be doing? seriously get over it Michael Jackson died its not that big of a deal. yea he was a great artist but the guy was addicted to painkillers so he pretty much killed him self. i think there more serious things obama could be doing then writing a fuckin letter maybe thinking of a way to keep his campaign promises and not raise taxes for his fuckin health bill. seriously rolling stone yall are stating to suck stories about the jonas brothers and hanna montana and the continues news on amercian idol what happen to reporting on good music and interesting artist.vi guess there is always spin.

Correct punctucation, spelling, and capitalization might make your rambling incoherence easier to read.

Denton | 6/29/2009, 11:45 am EST

Doesn’t he have bigger things to worry about?

grammy | 6/29/2009, 11:49 am EST

I agree. Enough about Michael Jackson. Farrah Faucet also died. Where was the condolence letter for her? She didn’t do drugs, was not accused of child molestation, etc. She fought a brave, painful, and visible battle with cancer. Isn’t that worthy of some sort of statement?

Reality Check | 6/29/2009, 12:04 pm EST

If Bush did this everyone would say “What a loving tribute.”

DeadHorse | 6/29/2009, 12:56 pm EST

Now Barack better send condolences to real American Hero, Billy Mays.

DeadHorse | 6/29/2009, 12:59 pm EST

Yea right, Reality Check. Everytime Bush opened his mouth RS and every other news outlet was ripping him to shreds.

Reality Check | 6/29/2009, 1:17 pm EST

I’m not talking about RS, Deadhorse. I’m talking about commenters on this blog.

LOL! | 6/29/2009, 1:42 pm EST

That’s funny. Boama gets blasted for not doing enough and Bush got free passes for being a dummy.

T-Bay | 6/29/2009, 6:48 pm EST

MJ has influence so many individuals…and he deserve all the respect in the world…I think that was sweet of the president…RIP MJ….we miss you!

Tracey Whitney | 6/29/2009, 7:52 pm EST

I am so very disappointed in Barack Obama. I volunteered for his campaign, and donated money to it as well. The least he could have done for Michael Jackson – an American Icon loved the world over – was issue a public statement. Sad indeed…

Lydia gakii Ikiara | 6/30/2009, 12:10 am EST

Well done Mr President, we can’t deny the magnificent performances Michael Jackson did, at the same trying to discourage our future from getting involved in drug abuse. Tribute to you Michael!

Black Hole Sun | 6/30/2009, 1:38 am EST

OK, I don’t get it. He says nothing about it at all, it upsets you. Now he sends a personal letter to the Jacksons, it’s not good enough because it wasn’t public. What the hell do you people want from Barack? Seriously, what’s the problem? I think you guys are being hypersensitive because of Michael’s death. Anything that isn’t a public declaration that Michael is god automatically reads to you as a declaration that he sucked. Before you ask, yes, I am a Michael fan, but I think you guys are attempting to read between non-existent lines. Don’t turn your sadness into some unnecessary outrage against an innocent person.

Marty | 6/30/2009, 1:55 am EST

Screw all the people who are giving Barack a hard time about this.
God bless Barack Obama that he decided to not to praise Michael Jackson to the skies. If it had been a Catholic priest’s obituary, no amount of good music or dance moves he created would wipe away the fact that he had very likely been a pedophile and spent all his money in shitty horrible ways. You guys don’t remember the evidence.
Will the President have to wear black and give a eulogy if Mike Tyson dies?

kindamara | 6/30/2009, 1:33 pm EST

I don’t understand why obama would send a condolence letter to the Jacksons. Guess that means obama condones drug abuse, etc. Question: Did obama send condolence letters to the families of Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett and other celebrities who have died? I think not.

Intel | 6/30/2009, 1:34 pm EST

@ Marty:
Evidence or accusations? Because if they had evidence, he would’ve died in jail. There’s no way they would’ve let him off if they had evidence. Think about it.

Isn’t anyone ever satisfied? Michael Passed away in Peace.
The Wills and Monies should all be kept Private. I think it is riduculous, the Financial has to be the first and then Michael. If
Michael were my child,,I would have a Private Funeral, after all he has worked hisself to death for his fans. Much respect to him and family and May He rest In Peace.

As an Obama FAN, let me try to clarify why many people, including myself, are disappointed that Obama hasn’t made a public statement about Michael Jackson. Although we can’t be sure, many of us are quite certain that if it had been anyone else who was even half as big as MJ, especially someone who was loved unanimously, Obama would have been quick to make a statement. I personally think the only reason Obama is fighting shy is because of MJ’s controversial past–he is actually AFRAID that the MJ haters will accuse him of “praising a child molester.” Think about it, many foreign political figures have made public statements, so it seems rather odd that the AMERICAN president says nothing. The whole “there are more important things going on” line is BS, it doesn’t fool anybody…Obama’s deliberate silence is way too obvious. On the other hand, I can’t really blame Obama that much, because judging by how people love to denounce MJ more than they would denounce a convicted murderer, I now understand why he is so afraid…I would have been petrified to say something myself. BTW, I am not a Michael Jackson fan, but I think he deserves much more respect for his talent and generosity than many people are willing to give him.

First and foremost the death of Micheal Jackson is a great tragedy.
He was a musical genious I have loved his music and his smile all my life. Secondly Michael was a great humanitarian, He has helped countless children and people of other countries, the worst insult ever was for some one to accuse him of child molestation, it was not only malicious but it was untrue, and he was found not guilty, many people are angry now that there is so much love and support out there for Michael nothing any one in the media will say will ever convince me Michael was not the beautiful and giving person that I have watched him grow into over my 45 yrs of living, now the media wants to agan denounce him and slander him with accusations of dug use, I thought you were innocent until proven guilty where is the proof. Stop letting the media feed your hate. Michael deserves to be loved and I will make sure that my children know who he is. He will live forever in myn heart. Lastly, yes I was looking for the President to issue a public statement Michael deserves to be recognized for his humanitarian efforts ,listen to the lyrics of his songs, the man wanted to make this world a better place and he often sang about in his songs , I don’t believe there will ever be another Michael and for that reason the President and Michael Jackson were similar, they both want to change the world into a better place.

MICHAEL JACKSON GAVE MILLIONS TO STARING CHILDREN…. PEOPLE WITH HIV/AIDS. HE WAS GOOD ENOUGH TO WORK WITH PRESIDENTS CARTER, BUSH AND WAS AWARDED MY REAGAN IN THE ROSE GARDEN. WAS A PERFORMER FOR PRESIDENT CLINTON. LOOK AT HOW MANY COUNTRIES WENT INTO NATIONAL MOURNING WHEN THIS MAN DIED. SO DONT GET ON HERE ACTING LIKE HE WAS SOME AVERAGE PERFORMER AND TALKING ABOUT ENTERTAINERS THAT MANY KNEW NOTHING ABOUT UNTIL THEY DIED. HE WAS A DIAMOND WHEN HE WAS LIVING AND SHARED ALOT OF HIS WEALTH WITH SO MANY THAT DID NOT HAVE. EVEN WITH PEOPLE WHO LIED ON HIM TO GAIN WEALTH, ONCE HE WASNT THERE PERSONAL PIGGY BANK ANYMORE. IF HE WAS GUILTY…HE WOULD HAVE BEEN IN JAIL BEFORE YOU COULD SAY THE KING OF POP IN SPANISH! I HOPE THAT SO MANY STOP TRYING TO PUT HIM IN A PLACE HE DOESNT DESERVE IN HISTORY. LAST TIME I CHECKED THE GREAT ELVIS PRESLEY DIED A FEW FEET FROM THE TOILET HE WAS SITTING ON… FROM A DRUG OVERDOSE!!! AND AMERICA TREATS HIM A HE WAS A GOD. THIS MAN WAS ELVIS TIMES TEN…BECAUSE HE LOVED ALL THE WORLD..EVEN HIS ENEMIES!! REST IN PEACE AND THANK GOD YOU DONT HAVE TO DEAL WITH JEALOUS PREJUDICE IDIOTS ANYMORE MJ!!!

My deepest sympathy to the Jackson Family. Micheal has been in my life since the day he started his amazing journey into the world of music. He has inspired and helped more people than he ever realized. Michael was with me through my pregancy with my son Dylan I sang to him for 9 months I’ll Be There (my son only lived 6 hours) I have sang that song for the past 16 1/2 years everday. I carried that song through to my pregancy with my daughter also. So you can kind of say Michael has been there for me everyday. That song is my ringtone for my daughter. I will never beable to express to the Jackson Family how much their loss has affected so many people. I know Michael is at peace in Heaven and finally my son will have the chance to hear Michael sing to him the song that I’ve sang to him for so many years. God Bless You Michael R.I.P

Michael Jackson’s family was suddenly and tragically faced with his death. It never occurred to me he would die this young and of course it’s a horrible shock to his siblings and children and the rest of his family. No mother should have to see her child die, no parent should have to outlive their child. My heart breaks for them. I hope Catherine Jackson and the rest of the Jackson family continue to stay strong and comfort each other as they have done all these years. Really no one can imagine how painful this is for his family. In case any of them should see this, my sincere condolences, thoughts and prayers are with them.
I wish the rest of you would stop being so insensitive.

To the Jackson Family:

I am only 5 years younger than Michael and I was destroyed when I heard the news of his demise. I watched him growing up and as a friend of mine pointed out, “When Michael passed, so did a big part of my life go too!”

My deepest sympathy goes out to you and his children. Just for the record, PLEASE KEEP THEM, LOVE THEM AND HOLD THEM TIGHTLY, FOR IN THEM LIVES ON MICHAEL’S LOVING SPIRIT!

May he rest in peace and watch over us ALL!

My love to your whole family for ever!

Colleen

I was born in 1958 and went through many emotional turmoils at the same time Michael Jackson did. I hated my looks when I was a teenager just like he did, and cried over people’s actions and hatred like he did.I have suffered from mental disorders that hindered me from being able to mature and to grow up. But in 1986, I accepted Christ into my heart and was filled with irrepressible joy. I have since gone through many trials and tribulations, but through it all Jesus and his joy have remained. I hope Michael sought and found the joy and faithfulness of the LORD which passes all understanding. I am ashamed to say I never prayed directly for him, but I will start praying for his family and for the world more fervently now. I am convicted by his forgiveness and ability to love, and for my believing some of the lies about him. We all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, but I think he tried to live out the love of God, to love his neighbor as himself and that is one real reason he was hated so much, regardless of his shortcomings. He was also hated because he dared to defy our culture’s racism and strict rules about race. He actually emboddied in his own body the truth that you can have black or white skin, and black or white features, but the human being is still the same.I understand that because I amd a white woman married to a black man (17 years in April.) Thank you, LORD for your child’s life and let us carry on our joy and love in YOU to the glory of the LORD!!
