Michael Jackson Fans Flood Streets of New York, L.A. to Remember Fallen Star

6/26/09, 10:06 am EST

As news of Michael Jackson’s death spread yesterday, stunned fans took to the streets of his adopted L.A. hometown and New York to grieve together, listen to music and pay tribute to one of the most iconic pop stars of all time. Click here to read Chris Willman’s report from Los Angeles, where a makeshift memorial was erected at the wrong Walk of Fame star and dance parties broke out at UCLA Medical Center, where Jackson was declared dead. Our report from the streets of New York is below:

“What’s going on out here?” A boy asked, approaching a woman in a crowd surrounding a news camera last night in New York’s Times Square, where hundreds gathered and roamed under the bright lights in disbelief. “Michael Jackson died,” The woman motioned to a digital billboard banner repeatedly rolling: MICHAEL JACKSON, KING OF POP, DEAD AT 50. “Oh my God, I didn’t know!” The young man gasped, almost grabbing the woman, then turning away, shocked.

Around the corner on 42nd, Madame Tussaud’s wax museum put MJ on display in the front window. “We love you Michael!” a passerby shouted. “It’s kinda eerie,” Delma Noel Pratt from Miramar, Florida, 39, said, staring at the statue after snapping a few photos.

(Look back at Michael Jackson’s remarkable career with photos, stories and more from the RS archives.)

“Everybody tries to be like him. All these little young R&B boys, Ne-Yo, Chris Brown — carbon copies,” Melvin, 33, from Brooklyn by way of Akron, Ohio said. “Weak carbon copies!”

“Part of me, even right this second, thinks he’s going to come back like, I fooled them!” said Rod Gailes from Detroit, celebrating with cast members from his upcoming Broadway play about Richard Pryor. “Even people who were throwing arrows and slings were doing it because they felt he was tough enough to take it. And now he doesn’t have to take it anymore.” Rod choked up. “You wonder how much of the passing is illness and how much is sadness and just being tired of fighting.”

Some 80 blocks uptown, an impersonator — a 25-year-old white woman channeling “Dirty Diana” in a white button down and black pants — posed for pictures outside the Apollo Theater where Jackson first performed with the Jackson 5 at age nine. “This was a Halloween costume,” the impersonator, Sophie Ricketts from Texas, explained. “Michael was making me nervous the last several years so when I heard today, it didn’t surprise me. It just made me sad because now there will be no more chances for redemption. Now it’s legend.”

A few hours earlier, Rev. Al Sharpton addressed an audience outside the Apollo, but the fans had long taken over as midnight passed. Across the street, a teenager held an iPod with speakers over his head like a boom box while fans danced to hit after hit. “I know he live forever,” Susanna from Argentina said with an accent almost as thick as her makeup, clutching a T-shirt with Jackson’s photo, kissing Michael’s face. Susana started to cry when asked how she felt upon hearing the news. “I die,” she said, “I die too.”

“My parents took me to somebody’s house that had cable to see the ‘Thriller’ video and it changed my life,” said Harlemite Justin Williams, 31, wearing a white glove, fist in the air. Williams spent the day blasting “Enjoy Yourself,” “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing),” and “Ben,” from his car, others honking and cheering as he passed. “We celebrate life in Harlem, it’s what we do,” he said, smiled, winked.

Standing against a wall holding a photograph of Mike in his glory days, Al Peterson, 75, observed. “Everybody’s talking about his passing but I’m talking about his living. His great brilliance; So much brilliance that in 50 years they’ll still be discovering brilliance that he produced,” said Peterson of Westchester County. “I guess they’ll compare him with Bob Marley and Elvis but so many of these young people don’t really know who Michael was. They dance to his music but they don’t know the spark behind him.”

“Michael! Michael! Michael!” A pocket of people eager to be captured on camera chanted for CNN after 1:00 a.m.

Under the theater marquee reading “In Memory of Michael Jackson, A True Apollo Legend 1958-2009,” four brown boxes lay flattened on the sidewalk. Covered with hundreds of farewell messages scrawled in marker, fans knelt to add more: Thank You Mike with a heart around it… RIP Brother… We’ll Never Forget You…. Motown Detroit Will Always Love You… You Changed the World… You’re the Best Ever, with Ever underlined three times for emphasis.

How do you begin to explane the words Loss or Sad……..

I had the oppertinuity to see Michael live in Montreal ,Canada at the 70 Thousand seat Olympic Stadium with his brothers during there Victory Tour…..Simply an Unbeliveable Show ! ! !

I strongly believe that you could take the 5 biggest acts in the world today (2009), design a show around them and Still in 2009 you would not be able to clome close to the God given BRILLANCE that was Michael Jackson. There are pioneers Michael was a Pioneer ….then & there are Flowers of the pioners.

Now Michael …Finally There is no more physical pain , No lawyers , no court dates No rehersals and no pressure … You have GIVEN YOUR ALL to the public …. We are Sad.
Now it is your time to Rest….finally.

whatever the haters says about m.j, we still owe him a great deal of whatever because without him pop music will never be the same. to all the people who says dirty names and others to him e.g david letterman among others. aren’t we all crazy sometimes? we all have personal problems and sometimes dont know what to do. so stop being hypocrites. at least the man you loved to call wacko has done something big during his time.

Sarah Stovall | 6/26/2009, 4:41 pm EST

I will never forget my parents getting me out of bed to watch Michael perform the Moonwalk for the first time on live TV
While singing Billy Jean. The Goosebumps all over my little arms and legs, how big my eyes would get, and how my heart would fly.

I played some videos from YouTube to remember him last night I am a mom now of girls ranging ages 2,3, and 7 years old.
I looked down at my 3 year old daughter in my lap mesmerized watching Thriller, and saw all of the Goosebumps on her arms,
and legs and saw how big her eyes were her leg bouncing to the beat. How I envied her youth, and seeing him the first time.
But treasured the fact that I got to share that moment with her, and felt a kinship and similarity with her.

I am so happy to have witnessed his light that shined so very bright to make many dream, cry, and scream with excitement.
He was a genius. And it is truly sad that the last years of his life the things that had happened.
We will never really know what had happened because we weren’t there. But what is really funny is the people
that could never understand the kindness, openness, and giving heart of a person like that jumped on the band wagon to
point their bony fingers Of hate, prejudice, jealousy, insecurity.

I will miss him, and enjoyed every bit of his performing career. And cannot wait to show my children the magic of Michael.
I pray for his children, and their future journey with out their loving father.

I LOVE YOU MIKE | 6/26/2009, 5:07 pm EST

THERE WAS A TIME IN MY LIFE I SWEAR I WAS GONNA MARRY THAT MAN, HE WAS AN INSPIRATION AND WILL ALWAYS BE. MIKE RIP.YOU WILL BE MISSED.

Life is a journey and at the end of that journey we all have an end. Michael journey was filled with sadness, joy, loneliness but admist all he had a talent that is equal to none – I enjoyed his music tremenously and although I gave him my share of criticism I still love him – and wonder how he would have been if his childhood days were different- but admist all his music was his soul and it brought him and many others in this world happiness – his music will live on

Jade Lee - Jamaica | 6/26/2009, 9:34 pm EST

I grew up in Jamaica with Michael Jackson’s music. I attended university in Florida in the 80’s and was fortunate enough to see him and his brothers and sisters when the Victory tour came through. It was absolutely spectacular. I was captivated by his electrifying performance. I’ve followed his career for almost 40 years. He was a special person, misunderstood and at times under appreciated. I will always be a true fan of his work. RIP my Michael!!!

I’m so hurt by his death. He’s an extraordinary person and without him the music industry wouldn’t be as great as it is now.
He has given so much of himself to the people, too much… Now it’s time for him to rest…i just feel sorry for his children, they were robbed off the chance to spend more time with their dad…

wel,am from nigeria, i will really miss him, rest in peace

Ray | 6/27/2009, 9:29 pm EST

I wasn’t a fan of Michael Jackson, although I will admit he possessed an extraordinary talent. I think it was sad that the one thing he always wanted to be…a child…was never realized.

But Michael the boy turned into Michael the man and never remembered – or realized – that fairy tales are make believe, even if you hide away in a personal doll house named Neverland.

I do find it ironic that mainstream newpapers, the very ones who hounded him relelntlessly in life are the same newspapers now mourning his loss. They can be hypocritical but I won’t be.

Devoted fans can overlook the controversies – and there were many beyond the molestation cases — but doing so will just enable the next superstar who, like Michael Jackson, will believe he too is made of teflon.

I do hope he is finally at peace.

Michael Jackson an innovator and unique musician. His energy and ability to cross barriers with his music that was out of this world was electrifying.
Passionate and courageous to express the power of music. He will be missed but never ever forgotten.
He leaves an amazing legacy that only a genius can leave.

My heart goes to his children and I only wish people let them grieve like every human needs deserves. Their father has passed. They need to the time to heal.

I feel happy that I experienced the energy of his music.
Part of me would want this was a media lie and not true. The reality though is that he is dead and that is very sad.
His music and his passing are evidence of his great ability to transform the world onto a world where all races dance to the same bit. What an amazing power he had.

My husband and I took our 12 year-old son to his show in Jo’burg one night, and my son came out crying because he hadn’t been able to get near his idol–it was so packed. Rest in peace, Michael. Gloved One, Loved One
(For Michael Joseph Jackson)

My heart is heavy, as I watch news footage of you
gliding across the stage
and gyrating your pelvis,At this moment in time this is bigger than the Duke,
man, this is bigger than Elvis!
Though you made your living with words, today there are
no words to express the way the world feels,
Right now there is no need to go into your discography
because it encompasses valleys and hills.
But where do I begin, should I start with your amazing
solo career or should I start with the Jackson 5,
When you were just a cute little boy,
On stage you were talented and outgoing,
Yet off stage you were introspective and coy,
In the 70’s, you put the world into a trance with your
‘fro and bell bottomed
jeans as you did the robot,
Michael, you had everyone at your feet because when you
danced and sang you gave all that you got!
Nat King Cole was a merry ole soul as he sat perched up
against mama’s old
wooden phonograph next to Billie Holiday, Roberta Flack
and the Jackson’s Destiny album,
Lord, have mercy you all looked so mature, sexy and
handsome!
I am old school and I remember coming home from school putting on your albums,
These were the days before CD’s, MP3 players, Limewire and
IPODS,
Goodness, listening to your music was heaven sent
directly from God.
Ooh wee, or should I say ‘hee hee hee’ about that pulsating falsetto,
That reached every country, mansion, island, barrio,
prison, hut and suburb, trailer park and ghetto!
You were a great admirer of the legendary James Brown,
It warmed my heart to see you at an award show holding
his crown.
You ruled the 80’s with a glittering iron glove,
Moon walking into the hearts of millions Moving as gracefully and as freely as
a dove.
Newborns coming into the world already know your name,
Ailing grandparents in their last days know the same.
You are Gary¹s finest but the world dubbed you the
‘Gloved One.’
Michael, your legacy is HIStory, DESTINY, OFF THE WALL,
INVINCIBLE,
BAD and most definitely a THRILLER.
You are the King of Pop the ‘Man In The Mirror!
You ‘rocked our world¹ for over 40 years.
You gave us such memorable songs as Who¹s Lovin You, Gotta Be There,
Heart Break Hotel, Butterflies, PYT, Billie Jean, Earth Song, Can You Feel
It,
Working Day And Night, The Girl Is Mine, Say, Say, Say,
and we ‘Remember The
Time’ you told us that ‘We Are The World’ and to ‘Ease
on Down The Road.’
You sold out football field stadiums and integrated MTV music videos!
Back in the day we wore your buttons and donned white
socks and penny
loafers,
Now here we stand today in shock and sadness but we
know your pain is over.
Michael, we miss you and though you said ‘Heaven Can
Wait’, ‘You Are Not
Alone’, and “I Can’t Help It, “Human Nature’ is the
reason that ‘I Just Can¹t
Stop Loving You’.
You were a great humanitarian a sensitive human being,
Who came to earth and completed your journey now you
can have eternal rest,
The world loves you ‘Gloved One’ but the Lord truly
knows best.
We ‘Never Can Say Goodbye¹ to you ‘Lovely One.’
WE LOVE YOU, MJ.

Doreen Ambrose-Van Lee
