As the entire world mourns the death of Michael Jackson, many are celebrating the King of Pop’s unparalleled musical legacy. Following the news of Jackson’s sudden passing, Jackson songs and albums immediately begin climbing the sales charts at digital music stores. Over on iTunes, the current top five albums, and seven of the Top 10, are all Jackson releases, with The Essential Michael Jackson, Thriller and Off the Wall all leading the charge. The same goes for the Amazon MP3 store, where Jackson is listed as the service’s top-selling artist of the day. Last.fm also documented the incredible jump in people on their service listening to Michael Jackson in the moments following Jackson’s death, with a peak of roughly 42,000 MJ songs being played on the service between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. ET yesterday.

(Look back at Michael Jackson’s remarkable career with photos, stories and more from the RS archives.)

As a tribute to Jackson, a multitude of Sirius XM stations will dedicate programming to the King of Pop, including a five-hour live tribute tonight on their ’80s on 8 channel. MTV has also deviated from their normal schedule to show Jackson music videos, live footage and interviews with celebrities paying homage to Jackson. VH1 Classic will also reportedly air nothing but Jackson content the entire weekend starting today, June 26th, at noon EST.

Here at Rolling Stone, we’ll have much more Jackson coverage throughout the day, including reports from the impromptu tributes in both New York and Los Angeles (where fans gathered at the wrong Hollywood Walk of Fame star), a playlist of Jackson’s greatest tracks from his record-shattering career and all the breaking news relating to his untimely death.

Thank God for the music that Michael has left us. The one and only King of Pop has died. There will never be another. A true legend. Good journey my friend.

La Roi Est Mort! | 6/26/2009, 1:58 pm EST

The king is dead. Part of the 80’s has died with him. The ultimate representative of the ultimate music decade.

TMac | 6/26/2009, 2:03 pm EST

The best selling artist of ALL times has departed his life. He was bigger than Elvis, The Beatles, or any other entertainer. Let’s remember him for who he is not for what others tried to make him out to be. I will never believe that he hurt any child, he was merely a child at heart himself. When most of us were playing he was working.Instead of being able to watch cartoons he was rehearsing for the next big show. Michael was talented and gifted and his gifts and talents touched a lot of people of all ages and race….let’s focus on that. I love Michael and I pray that God has mercy on the ones who hurt him from birth to death. May the King of Pop rest in peace!!!

Reply to TMac: while I’m a huge fan of Jacko, and he was an amazing talent, he was not more popular, or bigger selling than the Beatles or Elvis. They were an estimated 250 million units ahead of him…

MB from GA | 6/26/2009, 4:54 pm EST

I love him and i will miss him may his soul now rest in peace and have everlasting joy. My love goes out to you and your family. He was bigger than elvis and the beetles for the other commentator

Charlie | 6/26/2009, 5:23 pm EST

Elvis Presley. Michael Jackson

The only person you could put in the same catergory as Elvis and beyond.

wow.

Ever | 6/26/2009, 5:41 pm EST

I hate to break it to you, but as an artist he was, in fact, bigger than Elvis. Michaels’ career spanned decades – his entire life – from when he was a small child with the Jackson 5 all the way up to his final day at age 50 (almost 51) when he sold out 50 90,000 arena tour dates in the span of hours. And while Elvis’s final shows drew massive criticism for his lack of energy and his overweight and slow physique, MJ was still popping moves and moving faster, smoother and better than artists half his age, and still inventing new moves. The only group you could argue was bigger was The Beatles, and then it begins a debate of semantics and technicalities; showing that it takes 4 incredible artists to match Michael Jackson.

Leigh | 6/26/2009, 7:35 pm EST

@ Luke

Compared to this millenium, the 80’s was one of the greatest peaks of creativity the entertainment industry has ever known.

Now we’re just a bunch of indie morons moaning in self pity. A bunch of Jeff Buckley low quality rip offs.

Even if you aren’t into the whole mainstream pop of the 80’s, I don’t know a single person who doesn’t like at least one Michael Jackson song.

TRACY M | 6/26/2009, 8:18 pm EST

The fact that so many of you only give Michael Jackson credit for his 80’s work show that to me you all are newbies. And so many of you ungrateful wretches who have never contributed anything to society but your moaning and groaning show how you were never true fans anyway so us who are true admires and people who were blessed by this man and his family we are all the better for it. Been a Michael Jackson fan from the begining. And nothing can change that. Its better to be a fan and remember the blessings of this mans music than a hater left with nothing. GOD Bless the Jackson Family and the family of fans who will truly miss him. LOVE YOU MICHAEL ALWAYS WILL.

Robin Porter,Brunswick,Ohio | 6/27/2009, 1:37 am EST

Michael Jackson what a sad loss he was indeed a superstar his songs had a powerful message behind all of them Billy Jean,Thriller, Black and White,Beat it, ABC that he sang at the age of 5 alot of his songs will play on forever, forever.Michael had a gift that can’t be replaced. My prayers go out to the family and to his children.

Raph | 6/27/2009, 10:01 am EST

No doubt Mickael had talent and was a great dancer, but Elvis achieved at least as much with far less media hype! He could turn on a crowd by just moving his small finger, no need for special effects. That said, I hope both are having a gig now, and that they are taking turns at wearing their well-deserved crowns!

gina voldez | 6/27/2009, 12:06 pm EST

i loved him ,let him rest in peace .i loved his song beat it. t

lamina | 6/27/2009, 4:49 pm EST

He was the best music star that has ever graced the face of the Earth, period. He sold more albums than any solo artist…750 million, try to wrap your head around that!!! truly astonishing. Elvis was great but not greater and he’s actually the only one whose name goes next to Michael. You will be missed Michael and may you now find the peace that you were so looking for.

miguelito | 6/28/2009, 9:04 pm EST

M Jackson was good, but prince is better.

T-shirt and jeans | 6/28/2009, 10:32 pm EST

@ miguelito:
Prince was good, but MJ encompassed every genre, something even Prince couldn’t do. Prince was mainly funk and R&B, while Michael did pop, funk, soul, rock, everything. Not to mention Michael was never censored on MTV for being too sexually explicit, so he could reach an even broader audience with no problem. Prince hasn’t sold a fraction of the records that Michael has. Mike has sold 750 million records in his short lifetime, Elvis never lived to see his record sales hit that high (he was only 8 years younger than Michael when he died, mind you), and as someone accurately pointed out, it took 4 people to equal the talent of Michael. So for everyone saying he wasn’t all that, trying so hard to find a way to bring him down a notch, give up. There will never be another Michael Jackson, there will never be an equal. He set the bar to the highest level possible, and no one will ever touch that, ever.

Jude | 6/30/2009, 11:51 am EST

Erm miguelito, what exactly are you on about? It’s been established everywhere that Elvis has sold over 1 billion records. Michael Jackson is currently the 3rd highest selling artist below Elvis and The Beatles.

Please check up stuff before mindless posting.

james | 6/30/2009, 3:00 pm EST

mj was not the king of music it was elvis what is wrong with people look at the charts and see how many records elvis has had in the top 40 and record sales 1.8 billion elvis has sold mj 750 million half of what elvis sold mj is not the true king of pop elvis had 17 number one in 22 years mj had 7in 40 years in the uk alone

MusicMan | 6/30/2009, 3:19 pm EST

Michael Jackson had a string of hits and released the biggest selling album ever; however, does that make you great? I did respect Michael as an artist, and I did like several of his songs, but I don’t think he warrants these accolades. If you want to give accolades, then give him the accolade for Thriller. I just think the public does what it does best; it jumps bandwagons. Also, I think that most people lack musical depth and knowledge and really don’t want to be challenged musically. Michael Jackson’s music didn’t challenge you. He had a string of producers that did just that..they produced. Without them, I truly doubt if he would have had the hits that he did. And speaking of musical depth, it is a fact that Prince has produced far more music in the last three years than Michael has produced in an entire decade. Prince creates music that challenges the mind, the spirit, and the soul; not to just jump on the latest musical fad that a lot of “artist” tend to do, Michael included. Jumping on fads doesn’t sound like artistry to me. Prince changed his name to challenge the music industry and to force it to take a deeper look into the way the business operates and how it treats its artists. That speaks volumes to me as a music lover. I am not advocating on behalf of Prince, but when you think of the title the king of pop, which has become synonomous with Michael Jackson, I think Prince should be called the King of Music. He has created more albums than virtually any other artist in their entire careers. Just because someone sells more records doesn’t make them great! If thats the case, George Bush won the presidency twice….what does that tell you?

strawberrychick | 6/30/2009, 6:13 pm EST

Michael Jackson is definitely bigger than Elvis. Why? For obvious reasons, Michael broke down barriers from musical genre to race through his innovativeness and originality. All Elvis ever did was stole black people’s music, swing his hips and exploit his then pretty-boy looks. Michael Jackson was the first artist to have ever reached everyone around the planet pre-internet, admired by all colors, creed, age and race, while Elvis are admired by mostly Southern hicks.

Jude | 6/30/2009, 11:10 pm EST

Strawberry chick is another clueless person. She thinks Michael Jackson was the first person to break down the racial barrier. She even says it herself that Elvis stole black music, so if that was the case, it would be Elvis that was the first to break down the racial barrier, because it was because of him that made black music more acceptable in the 50’s. If Elvis was only accepted by “southern hicks” – then WHY ON EARTH did the president of Japan talk about how Elvis was his hero when he was younger. No, Elvis was the first biggest international hit, and he remains to this day. There was a time when 1/3 of world population tuned into see Elvis live in 1973 on T.V. No one else has done that.

DragonzShock | 7/1/2009, 2:06 am EST

For the Record Michael Jackson sold over 900 Million Albums people forget he was part of the Jackson 5 together they sold over 150 Million Albums. All together he has 12 Number one Albums. 7 on his own and 5 with his Brothers people never count his Jackson 5 sales and its sad you don’t they have to count he was part of the group he also has the best selling album in history the second best album isn’t even close and he was in an Era were there other ways to get music which lowers the real amount of sales as if it was the 50,60,70 or even somewhat the 80’s there was really no internet during that time he was the first person to come out with a Real music video Plus he made black music popular to White people. Stars today credit Michael for everything they do if it wasn’t for him they would have sang or danced

huss | 7/1/2009, 6:38 am EST

please music man have you ever listened to mj’s music if it didn;t make you think you must not be listning ,take history every song on this disk is massivily powerful this hole album is his struggle thru life they are some of the saddest songes i have ever heard childhood , scream, stranger in moscow so deep you probally just thought pop music ah i can’t be lyrical think again if a good record is just about a good producer y arn’t quincys other artist’s in the quinnies book of records it takes a strong person to last as long as michael has in the enertainment industry credit were credit is due thanks for the music michael

ripmj 2009 | 7/1/2009, 5:27 pm EST

Straight up. To hell with Elvis.

MJ was the king of Pop.

PERIOD!

MeowCa9 | 7/4/2009, 8:28 pm EST

Elvis Presley will always be the King.He is the only artist inducted into 3 Halls Of Fame including rock and roll, country and gospel. His records have sold close to one billion copies and he has 81 albums,53 singles and 16 extended play singles that are gold, platinum,or multi-platinum( as much as 9x).He had 18 number ones singles,40 top 10 singles,114 top 40 singles and 90 charted lps. This is only in America and only in the pop music catagory. He is wildly popular in worldwide with 40% of sales coming from overseas. So the facts speak for themselves.Elvis is and forever will be the King.Period.Oh,and he also made 31 movies.

MeowCa9 | 7/4/2009, 8:40 pm EST

And Elvis was not racist as he was raised in poverty. He loved black gospel and R&B music and opened the doors for all black artists. His music was smashed to pieces by many racist whites who called his music,”N****r -loving music.” This did not detour the King from making his music or moving his hips like no one else in his time. The Sweet Inspirations sang with him for many years. It is a shame that Jackson fans cannot recognise the love than Michael had for Presley. It is wrong to disrespect the lifelong achievements of Elvis.

Dan | 7/7/2009, 4:30 pm EST

mj was the largest and most influential entertainer in the 4.9 billion years this earth has been in existence! Elvis was good but he’s also been dead for 30 somethin years and there was no internet in elvis’s day. mike almost sold a billion albums and it didnt take 57 albums to do so.

derek simmons | 7/8/2009, 5:54 pm EST

OK, LETS SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT ON A FEW THINGS HERE….THERE ARE PEOPLE SAYING THAT ELVIS IS THE KING
WHAT BARRIERS DID HE CROSS,HOW MUCH CHARITY DID HE GIVE,WHAT ALBUM THAT HE PUT OUT WAS THE BIGGEST SELLING ALBUM OF ALL TIME,THE TRUTH IS ELVIS
DIED BROKE,PRICILLA PRESLEY CREATED GRACELAND,SO GET IT RIGHT,THIS IS WHERE ALL HIS MONEY & SALES CAME FROM,SO THE REAL KING
OR SHOULD I SAY QUEEN IS HIS EX WIFE….MICHAEL DID IT HIMSELF,THAT IS THE BIG DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN THE TWO….MICHAEL IS A TRUE LEGEND, HE EARNED HIS TITLE!

derek simmons | 7/8/2009, 5:56 pm EST

OH, AND ONE MORE THING, THE NEXT TIME YOU LOOK AT A MUSIC VIDEO,
REMEMBER THE INNOVATOR….M.J.

victor | 7/8/2009, 11:12 pm EST

elvis has sold more records then michael and has had more number one records.elvis did it all without music video and easy to do down loads and he was never arrested for sexual crimes against children long live the king

dennis | 7/8/2009, 11:52 pm EST

Michael was a great entertainer, but elvis was the superstar of all superstars. No one has ever had the versatility of Elvis. He was the true king of music. Michael did well for himself, but was not close to the singer as Elvis was. Elvis could sing any type of song well. He did many of other artists songs and either did them better or as good on their songs.
A good example of his popularity:
there are more Elvis impersonators than every one else combined. They have Elvis contests all over the world. People fill up to a 36,000 area to see a good elvis impersonator 30 years after his death. Most of the Elvis imitators that I have seen (about 75-100) are pretty good, Shawn Klush is the closest I have heard.
So in ending, as I said, Michael was a great enterainer, but he is not close to being the singer as Elvis was.

Dragonzblade3232 | 7/9/2009, 3:28 am EST

Its crazy Michael was a better dancer then Elvis and a better performer lol Elvis was only good for stealing other stars stuff Michael Created his own music also made most likely the single most well know Charity song in the world We are the world singers today don’t credit Elvis for anything he was a thief of others music and also MJ was dominate in two music Careers as a J5 and by him self people say Elvis was the best are just crazy and for impersonators when MJ was alive people were trying to be like him when you watch an R&B video you see all that dancing do that’s MJ all the way. Also he can sing with anyone Elvis couldn’t do that

bsl | 7/9/2009, 11:23 pm EST

Guys, there’s no point in comparing MJ and Elvis. They’re both kings in their own special way. They’ve both sold about 1 billion records. I’m sure MJ could have sold much more during the mid-late 90’s and in this millenium if was not caught up in the controversies. That people still love MJ is evident with the sale of his music in the last 2 weeks where he’s broken all records with over 6 million soundtracks and albums sold. And these sales are without the sales from Asia where he’s the bigggest of them all. Sounscan only accounts for North America, Europe, Oceania region. I wonder who accounts for his sales from Asia, South America, Africa, Middle East…

Henry | 7/11/2009, 7:18 pm EST

To whoever said that MJ did not produce a lot of music and he owes it all to his producer: 1. Every musical artist needs a producer. You could take the best performer on earth and stick him with an average or poor producer and he’d go nowhere. Why hate on MJ because he found a good producer? Part of his genius was he was careful about who he worked with. 2. You say Prince has produced more stuff so (in so many words) Prince is the greater talent. Well, MJ produced a lot more things than were ever released. Even when they made Thriller they had several more songs that were recorded and great but they decided they weren’t good enough for the album. Those songs were NEVER RELEASED. That is how MJ and his producers liked to work. Quality over quantity and they only wanted the upper 1% (or whatever) of all the stuff they created to get out there. I heard Quincy Jones say this on the commentary about Thriller. This isn’t a knock against Prince…. but… don’t assume that MJ didn’t do a lot just because he only released a few records. He has worked behind the scenes with dozens and dozens of top musicians both in and out of the studio. That’s part of why they give him praise.
