Bon Jovi Launch Summerfest With Two-Hour Career-Spanning Set

6/26/09, 8:32 am EST

“I smell trouble in the air, baby,” announced Jon Bon Jovi just two songs into his namesake band’s 130-minute performance at Milwaukee’s Summerfest on Thursday. “Trouble with a capitol T.”

But playing a to a packed Marcus Amphitheater (capacity: 23,000) on the opening night of Summerfest — an 11-day festival that features 700-plus bands performing on 11 stages — Bon Jovi and Co. caused about as much trouble as Rod and Todd Flanders combined. It’s hard for the New Jersey quartet to shake their good-guy sincerity, and why should they? Bon Jovi, for one, sounded like a hopeless romantic, singing: “You were born to be my baby”; “I won’t lie to you”; “God, it’s good to see you smile.”

This common touch goes a long way to explaining the band’s enduring appeal. Of course, having been around for 26 years, the group has made certain concessions to time. Bon Jovi, still fighting trim at 47, can no longer hit the same high notes he did in the group’s heyday and blocked in time for a needed breather midway through the lengthy set, allowing Sambora to take the raspy lead on “I’ll Be There For You.”

Bon Jovi walked the stage at a casual pace, occasionally swiveling his derriere to-and-fro (eliciting countless shrieks) or sparring with unseen enemies, throwing a series of left hand jabs. The one time he ventured into the crowd he seemed to regret it instantly. “Ladies, I ain’t scratch and sniff,” he cracked, ambling back onstage. “I’m getting too old for this shit.”

But while the concert did feature a couple of notable clunkers (”I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead” sounded oddly like a disjointed garage band slogging its way through a half-formed cover of Prince’s “Raspberry Beret”), the group remained sharp. Drummer Tico Torres, sporting a pair of black gloves, worked his kit like a bantamweight fighter on a propulsive “Keep the Faith.” Sambora grimaced his way through countless solos — his facial contortions making it seem as though the electricity were passing through his guitar strings and directly into his body. The quartet were also joined by rhythm guitarist Bobby Bandiera and bassist Hugh McDonald (almost a dead-ringer for David Letterman in this light).

For his part, Bon Jovi evoked memories of ‘83 on the synth-heavy “Runaway,” channeled Toy Story’s Woody on “Raise Your Hands” (”Reach for the sky!”) and led an a cappella sing-along of “Livin’ On a Prayer” that briefly gave the venue the feel of a hairspray-saturated, open-air cathedral. “We’re just getting started,” he shouted triumphantly as Summerfest’s fireworks hit their climax, igniting the sky in a shower of sparks. Then three songs later it was over. Even nice rock stars are prone to exaggeration.

Wow Bon Jovi – or rock news for that matter – on RS! Keep it coming guys…

nickdotnet | 6/26/2009, 10:26 am EST

seriously. I was blown away to see anything about rock on rolling stone – especially Jovi. Thoroughly enjoyed the article. Took me back to when RS actually wrote about rock.

Battle | 6/26/2009, 11:51 am EST

KISS and Bon Jovi duke it out for the title of biggest douches.

Garrett | 6/26/2009, 3:28 pm EST

Not the best bon jovi concert ive ever seen but still better than any other band out there at putting on a good show.

JOVI GIRL | 6/26/2009, 5:54 pm EST

Being a loyal fan from the very beginning, I don’t care what anybody says…Jon and the boys can still ROCK the house as their shows are STILL always sold out! I’m always glad to see them when they come to town….keep rockin’ boys, I’ll always be a die-hard fan!!! Love to you all…

mATTERgOD | 6/26/2009, 8:38 pm EST

A two-hour set…Pearl Jam does that every night out, not just on special occasions!

Nonetheless, it’s good to see them endure even though I quit listening twenty years ago.

Slider | 6/26/2009, 9:31 pm EST

Mattergod – on tour Jovi does 2.5 hr. shows every night…and JBJ has incredible energy… he makes Vedder look like Meatloaf on stage. BJ #1 album and #1 touring band in the world last year…. Jovi past up PJ and a long long time ago my man.

D | 6/26/2009, 9:31 pm EST

Bon Jovi play 2 hour shows everynight also dude. Pearl Jam aren’t the only ones. BJ did have the highest grossing tour last year and I saw them in Nashville and it was awesome. Jon also really messed his voice up on the slippery/NJ tours and he changes the key live just to save his voice but he can still hit the notes when he wants to. just see their performance of “Always” last year which is probably next to Prayer the highest registered song in the catalog.

You don’t stay awesome and huge for 26 years by accident.

Anonymous | 6/26/2009, 9:57 pm EST

see the bjb blow sting off the stage in nj at earthsave prententious english v american rnr not even close

BK | 6/26/2009, 11:05 pm EST

Wow Bon Jovi still has it and has had for 26 years! Cant say that for most 80’s bands. At least these boys still look good! They are still amazing live!

Gee too bad for you naysayers, you don’t know what your missing!!! Bon Jovi is beyond awesome. The best live act around.Don’t knock it until you tried it.

Have been a fan from the start and no one compares to these guys live or otherwise. They are the absolute best and they give us music with meaning keep going boys

TaraLeigh | 6/27/2009, 9:26 am EST

Always a joy to see as much slamming and slapping down of Jovi as praise in a RS article. *sigh-insert sarcasm*

Even with technical issues galore, Jovi delivers. It’s a rarity to have any show be under 2hrs for these guys. Once you go to a show, you’re converted.

Period.

Thanks for giving them a shoutout–even if half of it was a backhanded compliment.

Lisa | 6/27/2009, 10:02 am EST

I heard there were ALOT of technical troubles at this show, but the guys were apparently still in good spirits. Rock on guys!

Ummm…I saw Bon Jovi open for Ratt in the mid 80’s. Bon Jovi was pop cheese and Ratt kicked ass.

amanda | 6/27/2009, 11:12 am EST

just because you don’t LIKE Bon Jovi doesn’t mean that they are NOT awesome. I can’t stand Nirvana but to sit here and say they weren’t awesome is just ignorant. Bon Jovi is clearly awesome.

Bon Jovi is Awesome!!! | 6/27/2009, 12:39 pm EST

Kind of like saying Mcdonalds is gourmet cuisine. It’s fine that they’re still around, but so are Poison. There are many different reasons for staying in business, and the reasons are not always the same. I’m guessing the same tools that are buying BJ’s music and going to their shows will probably keep a band like Nickelback in business for much longer than they should as well-but that doesn’t mean their music compares with the greats(Beatles, Who, Zeppelin etc.)

No one is saying don’t like them-but please stop trying to sell how great they are. Their music is generic pop that belongs in feminine hygiene commercials. Seriously, can’t you hear the song “Always” in a Tampax commercial? Hate on me all you want, but I guarantee you’re thinking about it.

MNJOVIGIRL | 6/27/2009, 2:32 pm EST

WASN’ T THE BEST, BUT CONSIDER THE TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES THEY HAD PLUS IT WAS IN AN AMPHITHEATER, SO THEIR NOT GOING TO SOUND THE GREATEST. SO STOP SLAMMING THE BOYS, THEIR BACK AND READY 2 ROCK!

hoff | 6/27/2009, 3:04 pm EST

After 26 years they still rock. Its great to hear the 80’s rock over the new music of today. Rock on…

Karma | 6/27/2009, 6:01 pm EST

The reason Bon Jovi had the highest grossing tour is because idiots like D and Slider pay 100 plus dollars to see this cheese. BJ makes Vedder look like Meatloaf? Please, real men don’t wear makeup. By the way, has Bon Jovi ever played a 45 song, 3 plus hour set? Didn’t think so….7-11-03, Mansfield, Mass. Pearl Jam, bitches.

just older | 6/27/2009, 6:09 pm EST

Rolling Stone has always hated Jovi for whatever reason. Richard Sambora is one of the FINEST guitar players around,no matter how underrated he is.
Dude, they’re getting older,if you were all nearing your 50’s,would you be expected to have the same amount of energy you did in your 20’s? Probably not.
They ALWAYS put on a good show. If they didn’t,do you think people would still be buying tickets and buying their albums if they thoroughly sucked? Again, probably not.
Nice opinion, but then again, this is a magazine that features the Jonas Brothers on their cover.

MNJOVIGIRL | 6/27/2009, 7:26 pm EST

I was at both Bon Jovi concerts when he played Excel Energy Center March 17& 18 of “08″. It was a 4 hr show both nights. So yes, he does perform 3hr plus shows. Besides i doubt Pearl Jam will be around for 26 yrs like “The Boys”. THEY HAVE STYLE!!! By the way Karma “Have a nice Day”!

Dean | 6/27/2009, 8:21 pm EST

My wife and I were in the second row. My wife loves Jon and I am a guitarist so I was digging Richie’s solos. The guys were right on. Had a great time. The person who made the remark about Pearl Jam hit it right on the head. Their are not many bands lasting 25+ years especially from the grunge genre.

Laurie | 6/27/2009, 10:18 pm EST

HATE 2 BREAK THE NEWS 2 ALL U BON JOVI HATERS, BUT THE GUYS WILL BE AROUND FOR AWHILE. THE GUYS ANNOUNCED THE OTHER NIGHT THAT THEY JUST FINISHED ANOTHER ALBUM. ALSO, I HAVEN’T HEARD ANYTHING ABOUT PEARL JAM BEING INDUCTED INTO THE SONGWRITERS HALL OF FAME LIKE JON & RICHIE WERE LAST WEEK.

Chris C | 6/27/2009, 10:38 pm EST

Yeah their music is cheesier than an overflow in a vermont creamery and the songwriting is not quite prolific, but I have no shame in admitting I have got my Jovi on before. I went to see them once in Croke Park, Dublin a few summers back and it was exactly what I expected, big songs, big sound, big hair. Plus as a guy I was outnumbered 3 to 1 by predominantly beautiful women and many milfs, dead on. I was buzzing for hours after the show and it was all good times. They also have an unbelievably talented guitarist in the often overlooked Sambora.

But to be truly moved at a show, Pearl Jam is and always will be where it’s at.

Anonymous | 6/27/2009, 11:32 pm EST

Not sure where this Pearl Jam / Bon Jovi comparison is coming from… It’s totally apples and oranges.

But to Laurie: Pearl Jam is 10+ years younger than Bon Jovi. They will be inducted into the same hall of fame, in due time. Also, TRY TURNING OFF YOUR FRIGGIN’ CAPS LOCK KEY.

scarr | 6/27/2009, 11:50 pm EST

“Ummm…I saw Bon Jovi open for Ratt in the mid 80’s. Bon Jovi was pop cheese and Ratt kicked ass.”
Response to this post…. ummm, Ratt, are the still around? don’t recall hearing about them still selling out worldwide tour.

DrZ | 6/28/2009, 4:53 am EST

No “In And Out Of Love” on the setlist shows what a no integrity having fraud Bon Jovi really is. Which is just as well, cuz that sucked balls.

Ice Man | 6/28/2009, 8:14 am EST

Wow Karma, I was unaware the stipulation for being considered a great band was to play 3 hour plus 45 song concerts! I am in a cover band in small little Iowa and we play over 4 hours all the time in crappy little bars! I guess that puts us up there with Pearl Jam!

Roberta | 6/28/2009, 2:20 pm EST

Check b illcoard list of money earned in tours.
Bon jovi is the only band with a real tour (more than 30-40 concerts with stadiums included, i’d say) with 100% sold out.
No R&B singer did the same, no rapper did the same, madonna didn’t do the same. The closer to bon jovi was only michael jackson with his 50 sold out concerts.
Numbers can speak for those thinking that those “hit of the moment” can beat bon jovi.

Cj | 6/28/2009, 2:52 pm EST

Ratt was LED ZEPPELIN compared to Bon Jovi. The EP,Out Of The Cellar, and Invasion Of Your Privacy are VASTLY better than anything Bon Jovi EVER did.Want more? THE PROOF WAS ON THE STAGE BABY.Ratt is still playing but even if they were not,it would not matter cuz what Bob Seger said many years ago still stands.ROCK AND ROLL NEVER FORGETS.

S | 6/28/2009, 4:32 pm EST

How can someone even say that Ratt is better than Bon Jovi. Of course that is one opinion and I respect, BUT Bon Jovi has had multiple number one singles and albums. What does Ratt have? Out of the Cellar. That’s it. Cannot even compare to Bon Jovi’s massive success.

Ken | 6/28/2009, 7:26 pm EST

Wow…Let me chime in on this.I’m old enough to remember both of these bands from their early days.I absolutely despised Pearcy and thought he needed a swift kick in the ass.Aside from that, Ratt rocked ferociously live, and had great songs. Bon Jovi on the other hand, came off kinda light in comparison.Jon Bon Jovi decided a long time ago it was hopeless to compete with the heavy bands (Ratt-Motley Crue-Judas Priest etc.)and instead went the “pop” route.Let’s be honest, it made them rich.As far as Ratt is concerned, fate is also a contributing factor. If what happened to Crosby happened to Sambora instead, the long term outcome might be very different.

JoviGirl | 6/29/2009, 12:04 pm EST

Maybe a little biased but I have seen Jovi 30+ times in the last 20 years- always a good show. The critics have NEVER liked them and if you don’t like them- so be it- if we all spent our time listening to the same stuff it would be kinda boring out here- live and let live and enjoy the music- whomever it may be. Give them credit for staying power as well as all the charity work they do also- love ya guys hope to see you soon

Anna | 6/29/2009, 2:42 pm EST

Reading all your posts… nobody is prophet in his own land. Bon Jovi is one of the most important bands ever. It seems only outside USA.
What happen with you people? You are lucky to have them, but you just not appreciate them. Wow

FedeBJ | 6/30/2009, 12:34 am EST

Bon Jovi is the best! No matter what these jerks say. Rolling Stone magazine knows shit about music, they think they are trully rockers, but then they put the Jonas Brothers on the cover.
BON JOVI 25 YEARS ROCKING IN THE FREE WORLD!!!

Alec John Such | 6/30/2009, 7:42 am EST

I was side stage at Summerfest. They rocked. They always did, they always will.

Joe | 6/30/2009, 7:42 am EST

Bon Jovi is a band that has stood the test of time, regardless of what the critics say. They put on a great show and put on songs that people still like listening too. As far as comparisons to RATT go, there is no comparison. What has RATT done other than Round and Round?

Imp | 6/30/2009, 9:04 am EST

You are an idiot.

Charlene | 6/30/2009, 11:12 pm EST

Went to the Bon Jovi concert On June 27/09 in Moncton, N.B. Canada. It was by far, the best concert I’ve ever seen.and Ive seen a lot.I feel those guys just get better with age. I keep reading how because of his age, that he doesnt hit all the high notes. Well he faired damn good in my books. Hoping Halifax, N.S. will be on his tour next time around. Hot Hot Hot I say

GRACE | 7/1/2009, 2:54 am EST

sure bon jovi aren’t musical prodigies but man they constantly cop it in this magazine.

possible reason for RS and other musical critics hating on bon jovi: the critics were, like Jon Bon Jovi, young men during the 80S and are still bitter Bon Jovi has survived.

NYJovigirl4ever | 7/1/2009, 11:48 pm EST

Umm, isn’t Steven Pearcy dead? Bon Jovi has stood the test of time. They rock and it’s a waste of my time to try and convince you HATERS that anybody can out ROCK them OR OUTLIVE THEM!!! BON JOVI 4-EVER.

NYJovigirl4ever | 7/2/2009, 12:02 am EST

When BJ play live there isn’t ONE SINGLE PERSON who is not into the show. I have seen A LOT of great bands live and have NEVER seen a crowd react the way a crowd reacts when BON JOVI plays. It is indescribable. They always put 110% into their live shows and no one EVER leaves unsatisfied and not wanting for more. How many other bands can you say that about???? REALLY???

Anonymous | 7/2/2009, 8:45 am EST

OK, Pearl Jam is an awesome band, first off. I don’t see what Ratt has going for it.

Bon Jovi is just flat out entertainment. I don’t think that the musical “quality” is better or worse than PJ, but their concerts are fun as hell.

My experiences of people who ride on them, claiming it is “crap” are the same people who claim to be musical “purists”.

These “purists” always seem to wind up being people:

A. Don’t have any actual musical talent themselves, just “fantastic” judges” – See the Rolling Stone writers.

B. People who are gloomy and not fun to be around. Life is too short to sit around and judge everything when you can go to a Bon Jovi concert and have one hell of a time. Have fun roaming internet chat boards and hating.

P.S. Anyone else laugh when they saw the RS subscription pop-up with the Jonas Brothers? Tico’s drumsticks are thicker than their *****

Anna | 7/2/2009, 4:45 pm EST

Thanks to all this posts. I’m returning my faith into “real” music lovers. I thought i was the only one that thought Rolling Stones writers didn’t know what music is about… seriously… JONAS BROTHERS IN THE ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE!!! And you think you can criticize BJ!

Big | 7/5/2009, 5:44 am EST

F . . K YOU

anita | 7/6/2009, 9:50 am EST

Bon Jovi played here in Moncton N.b. on June 27 and it was by far one of his best concerts.Jon might be 47 but he still has it going on!He is and will always be number 1 band in history.

Anonymous | 7/9/2009, 10:41 am EST

What’s the fuzz about all this Jovi/Ratt/PJ comparisons???

PJ is a great rock band with whole other style of music and other ambitions than Jovi or Ratt. How can you compare such bands?

I honestly don’t know Ratt very well and perhaps that’s because I was only 4 in ‘84. Fact to non knowing ratt tells me somewhat that they did not produce a lot of very succesfull things after the eighties.

I bought my first albums by the beginning of the 90’s and this means i have a lot of jovi and PJ.
I bought everything earlier of bon jovi after having bought Keep The Faith in 92.

PJ and Jovi, both seen live are excellent. Who rocks the most? Well that depends. It’s not the kind of distorsion, the darkness of the songs or the loudness of the guitars that makes a band rock harder. It’s mostly the sweat they lose on stage that tells me who’s rocking the hardest and all i can say is that Jovi and PJ are always drained when they go off stage.

Here you go. That’s in my opinion the only measure for knowing who rocks the most.

On a personal note, i listen more to jovi than PS because the lighthearted songs of jovi are just simply giving you a summer feeling, and that’s simply more my kind of mood.

Kevin, europe, belgium, 29y

Love Bon Jovi | 7/12/2009, 2:20 am EST

Bon Jovi is simply the best. Period. Love everything about them….their moving, rocking, music; their look; their story. Going to one of their concerts is an unparalleled treat. I wish the very best to these boys from New Jersey.

Mae Grace | 7/12/2009, 10:46 am EST

i’m one of the die hard fan of bon jovi. and honestly,i never heard about that RATT whatsoever! all i can say is that Bon Jovi is INCOMPARABLE! rock on,Jon!

Then why is it Ratt plays dive bars nowadays, unless Poison asks them to open up for them, and Pearl Jam played my state fair last year, and Bon Jovi sells out Football Stadiums?Bon Jovi is bigger nowadays than they were in the 80’s.Ratt hasn’t made a decent album since 1988’s Reach For The Sky.And Stephen Pearcy can’t even sing live anymore, and most of the time he’s always drunk on stage. As far as the 80’s bands go,Bon Jovi and Def Leppard are the only ones who survived through the grunge era in the early 90’s and kept making records and packing arenas.

like it was in the box set booklet
bon jovi opened for RATT in the mid 80s and twenty years later, BJ are still playing stadiums while RATT are playing rooms? and the booklet also mentioned that half the stadium left after BJ had done opening… that speaks for itself

Art Ackerson | 8/19/2009, 1:57 pm EST

Holy crap, where did the Ratt comparision come from? What really is funny is that my first concert was Bon Jovi openeing for Ratt in East Rutherford,NJ.. Who knew!!! The good ol’days!!!!

MB | 8/29/2009, 2:14 pm EST

I didn’t become a Bon Jovi fan until about 5 or 6 years ago and have seen them in concert twice since. I have found their shows to be professional, fun and well worth the money I spent. I have no idea who Ratt is and don’t care. The review is only one person’s opinion. I do not consider it important.

ROCKETT | 9/1/2009, 8:21 am EST

OKOK Bon Jovi, does kick way more ass than Ratt, but Pearl Jam is grunge, that that automatically throws them in the rubbish heap, even if Stephen Pearcy cannot sing, he really is “terrible” even back in the day. so Ratt is good, imagine Warren DeMartini up agaisnt whoever pretends to play guitar for PJ’s, He would kill him in one note. And at least Hair metal bands sing music with substance like cocaine and strippers. all that bull**** that grunge bands moan about isn’t real, it is an illution because they are depressed and eat Schplappo’s cereal.

Sunstreaked | 9/20/2009, 4:13 pm EST

Articles like this remind me of why I stopped subscribing to RS years ago. Even when you are praising a band like Bon Jovi, it’s half-arsed praise. It’s well known that Jann Wenner has had a “thing” again Jovi since the beginning. Sorry, dude, they’ll be remembered far longer than you will. And, of course, that’s not the only band Wenner is against – Chicago ring a bell? How about the Dave Clark 5?

Like or not, Bon Jovi has made a difference on the music scene, their inspiration for the Unplugged series just for one.

Those of us who read more than RS know the stories behind this and I for one am not coming back until there is a changing of the guard.

Dominika | 11/2/2009, 4:14 pm EST

a 2 hour set is a regularity with Bon Jovi. They’re not a ‘rock’ band anymore, but they’re doing pretty well considering how many people write things like this about them ;) so it doesn’t really work. Each person in that band is a good musician whether you admit it or not. Considering how different each of them is, they’re coping well together, doing it the way they want to. It’s just hard for this kind of people to put up with them still earning money. Just don’t write about them at all if you’re in so much pain, we’ve heard it all before.
