Ramblin’ Jack Elliott: Tales From His Long and Winding Career

Arlo Guthrie has known Ramblin’ Jack Elliott for nearly his entire life, but “It wasn’t until I was older when I realized that ‘ramblin’ was not a geographical name,” Guthrie tells Rolling Stone. Elliott has had a long, fascinating career as a songwriter, Woody Guthrie’s sidekick and Bob Dylan’s hero — and he’s never lost the knack for masterful storytelling. Elliott, who recently released an album of Depression-era blues, A Stranger Here, shared a few tales about first meeting Dylan (”He did have kind of a screechy voice. But he was like a son to me”), receiving a check from Andy Warhol (”I could’ve sold that check for $75,000, but I cashed it because I needed money”) and helping induct Woody into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (”I was sitting there with a dirty beat-up old Stetson and a lumberjack shirt”).
