“Wall of Sound” producer and convicted murderer Phil Spector will serve his 19 years-to-life prison sentence at the California Substance Abuse and Treatment Facility and State Prison in Corcoran, CNN reports. While Spector doesn’t actual have a substance abuse problem that requires treatment, the facility is often used for “inmates with safety concerns, such as celebrities, gang dropouts or those whose crimes make them a target of other prisoners,” a spokesperson for the California Department of Corrections said.

Spector was sentenced last month after being found guilty in the retrial for the murder of actress Lana Clarkson, who died of a gunshot wound in Spector’s mansion in 2003. The facility, where Robert Downey Jr. served time for a probation violation in 1999, features jail cells that are slightly more spacious to accommodate prisoners that require wheelchairs. Neighboring Corcoran State Prison houses Charlie Manson.

The day before he committed the murder, Ringo Starr announced the upcoming release of the non-Spectorized version of Let It Be… coincidence? I don’t think so

Maybe Spector will serve the Full Monte, but some of us believe not–given the (in our view) good grounds for appeal centering on the admission of ancient history regarding other women, related instructional error and prosecutorial misconduct.

And prior to the appeal being resolved on its merits, there is a substantial (albeit not as great a) chance that Spector will be released by a higher court pending appeal.

Incidentally, you have the name of the prison wrong; it is the “California State Prison, Corcoran (“CSP”)”.

It is NOT the “ California Substance Abuse and Treatment Facility and State Prison in Corcoran”.

As we reported today, Spector is being housed in the in CSP “Facility III-C”—which is described by the CSP level III web page as having “five buildings with a total combined bed capacity of 1,180. III-C is designated as a Sensitive Needs Yard—meaning prisoner’s requiring protection from the general population.

Spector has a private cell in this facility, and is eligible to purchase a color television and CD player. (No cell phones, internet access, or even printed emails mailed to Spector allowed.)
