As news spread about Michael Jackson’s sudden death at age 50, the biggest names in music and many of Jackson’s famous friends issued statements and posted on their Twitters to pay tribute to the King of Pop’s legacy. Here are some of their memorials: (Plus, look back at Rolling Stone’s Michael Jackson photos, cover stories, album reviews and more.)

Madonna: “I can’t stop crying over the sad news. I have always admired Michael Jackson. The world has lost one of the greats, but his music will live on forever! My heart goes out to his three children and other members of his family. God bless.” (People)

Quincy Jones: “I am absolutely devastated at this tragic and unexpected news. For Michael to be taken away from us so suddenly at such a young age, I just don’t have the words. Divinity brought our souls together on The Wiz and allowed us to do what we were able to throughout the 80’s. To this day, the music we created together on Off The Wall, Thriller and Bad is played in every corner of the world and the reason for that is because he had it all…talent, grace, professionalism and dedication. He was the consummate entertainer and his contributions and legacy will be felt upon the world forever. I’ve lost my little brother today, and part of my soul has gone with him.”

Paul McCartney: “I feel privileged to have hung out and worked with Michael. He was a massively talented boy man with a gentle soul. His music will be remembered forever and my memories of our time together will be happy ones.”

Justin Timberlake: “We have lost a genius and a true ambassador of not only Pop music but of all music. He has been an inspiration to multiple generations and I will always cherish the moments I shared with him on stage and all of the things I learned about music from him and the time we spent together. My heart goes out to his family and loved ones.”

Eddie Van Halen: “I am really shocked; as I’m sure the world is, to hear the news. I had the pleasure of working with Michael on ‘Beat It’ back in ‘83 — one of my fondest memories in my career. Michael will be missed and may he rest in peace.”

Diana Ross: “I can’t stop crying; this is too sudden and shocking. I am unable to imagine this. My heart is hurting. I am in prayer for his kids and the family.” (MTV)

John Mayer: Dazed in the studio. A major strand of our cultural DNA has left us. RIP MJ. I think we’ll mourn his loss as well as the loss of ourselves as children listening to Thriller on the record player. I truly hope he is memorialized as the ‘83 moonwalking, MTV owning, mesmerizing, unstoppable, invincible Michael Jackson.” (via Twitter)

Steven Spielberg: “Just as there will never be another Fred Astaire or Chuck Berry or Elvis Presley, there will never be anyone comparable to Michael Jackson. His talent, his wonderment and his mystery make him legend.” (EW)

The Roots’ ?uestlove: “i know we make light of me never getting sleep and overworking. but i’ll say that he didn’t go in vein. i will do my best to slow down as to not overwork myself to the point in which i can’t even enjoy life anymore. im am devastated over this but we all have memories. i just hope that he will get due justice in all the press memorials and whatnot. i know he was mired in controversy the last decade of his life but i think its time we let him rest in peace and learn to separate the ART and the ARTIST. –that is the MJ i will forever remember.” (via Twitter)

Lisa Marie Presley: “I am so very sad and confused with every emotion possible. I am heartbroken for his children, who I know were everything to him, and for his family. This is such a massive loss on so many levels, words fail me.”

Britney Spears: “I was so excited to see his show in London. We were going to be on tour in Europe at the same time and I was going to fly in to see him. He has been an inspiration throughout my entire life and I’m devastated he’s gone!” (People)

Lil Wayne: “I personally can’t believe it. But it’s more unfortunate for the world of music. … My love goes out to his family. … A sad day in history, not [just] music.” (MTV)

Beyoncé: “This is such a tragic loss and a terrible day. The incomparable Michael Jackson has made a bigger impact on music than any other artist in the history of music. He was magic. He was what we all strive to be. He will always be the King of Pop! Life is not about how many breaths you take, but about how many moments in life that take your breath away. For anyone who has ever seen, felt or heard his art, we are all honored to have been alive in this generation to experience the magic of Michael Jackson. I love you, Michael.”

Chris Brown: “Michael Jackson is the reason why I do music and why I am an entertainer. I am devastated by this great loss, and I will continue to be humbled and inspired by his legacy. My prayers are with his family. Michael will be deeply missed, but never forgotten. He’s the greatest … the best ever. No one will ever be better.”

The Recording Academy President Neil Portnow: “Rarely has the world received a gift with the magnitude of artistry, talent, and vision as Michael Jackson. He was a true musical icon whose identifiable voice, innovative dance moves, stunning musical versatility, and sheer star power carried him from childhood to worldwide acclaim. A 13-time GRAMMY recipient, Michael’s career transcends musical and cultural genres and his contributions will always keep him in our hearts and memories. We are deeply saddened by this tragic news and our hearts go out to his family and to music lovers around the globe who mourn this great loss.”

Diddy: “MJ showed me that you can actually see the beat. He made the music come to life!! He made me believe in magic. I will miss him!” (via Twitter)

Slash: “Really sad news about Michael, he was a talent from on high.”

Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz: “I have never felt this before in my life. I could measure my childhood 2 now on an mj growth chart. if this is true. Rip. The last legend.” (via Twitter)

Ne-Yo: “Michael Jackson will live forever through the thing that he put all of his life energy into: his music. I will do my part to keep the melody alive, to keep the energy forever changing form, but never ever dying!! Long live Michael Jackson.”

Usher: “This loss has deeply saddened me, with a heavy heart I composed this statement. May God cover you Michael. We all lift your name up in prayer. I pray for the entire JACKSON family particularly Michael’s mother and all his fans that loved him so much. I would not be the artist, performer, and philanthropist I am today without the influence of Michael. I have great admiration and respect for Him and I’m so thankful I had the opportunity to meet and perform with such a great entertainer In so many ways he transcended culture. He broke barriers, he changed radio formats! With music, he made it possible for people like Oprah Winfrey and Barack Obama to impact the mainstream world. His legacy is unparalleled Michael Jackson will never be forgotten.”

Thriller director John Landis: “He had a troubled and complicated life and despite his gift, he remains a tragic figure. My wife Deborah and I will always have great affection for him.”

Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus: “first album i ever bought was thriller. with birthday money. on cassette. for my brand new sony walkman. truth. rest in peace” (via Twitter)

M.I.A.: “MICHAEL JACKSON the first 2 english words i eva spoke . the future sucx!” (via Twitter)

Wyclef: “I will not be going on TV talking about this, but my memory of Michael was when he came and saw me in the studio, I LOVE MICHAEL” (via Twitter)

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger: “Today, the world has lost one of the most influential and iconic figures in the music industry. From his performances with the Jackson 5, to the premiere of the ‘moonwalk’ and ‘Thriller,’ Michael was a pop phenomenon who never stopped pushing the envelope of creativity. Though there were serious questions about his personal life, Michael was undoubtedly a great entertainer and his popularity spanned generations and the globe. Maria and I join all Californians in expressing our shock and sadness over his death and our hearts go out the Jackson family, Michael’s children and to his fans worldwide.”

Rev. Al Sharpton: “A friend of Michael’s for the last 35 years, I call on people around the world to pray for him and his family in the hour. I have known Michael since we were both teens, worked with him, marched for him, hosted him at our House of Justice headquarters in New York, and we joined together to eulogize our mutual idol, James Brown. I have known him at his high moments and his low moments and I know he would want us to pray for his family.”

Miley Cyrus: “Michael Jackson was my inspiration. Love and blessings.” (via Twitter)

Ludacris: “If it were not for Michael Jackson I would not be where or who I am today. His Music and Legacy will live on Forever. Prayers to the fam. R.I.P.” (via Twitter)

Shocking news of the whole century! I believe all the Record shops worldwide + telecom companies + retail merchandising companies would have been making hell lots of money after MJ’s death from now on.

The only regret i’ve ever had in my life is to miss his ‘LIVE’ concert in Malaysia.

MJ is a true legendary King of Pop! I salute him all the way. My deepest condolences to his family members.

I wanted a distraction from all the sorrow & opened a new book to read…the 1st pg had a quote from socrates;”THE GREATEST BLESSINGS GRANTED TO MANKIND COME BY WAY OF MADNESS(MJ’s life not personality);WHICH IS A DIVINE GIFT” I hope others find solace in these ancient words.RIP MJ you will forever be remembered as a legend.

MJ aka King of Pop, I am so devasted by your death! Truly the greatest singer of all time & you have taught us what ‘Pop Music’ is all about! Have always loved your music to the fullest & have been your fan since I was very young! You have been such an Inspirational idol to me & you will always be remembered!

Really regret missing his concert in Malaysia many years ago. Before his concert, I saw him walking out of Toys R’ Us store in 1-Utama shopping centre. He was actually behind me & when I turned my back, he saw me & smiled at him gracefully! I will always treasure this moment forever in my life!

MJ, R.I.P.! Pop Music will never be the same again without you around & no one can ever replace you!

My heart goes all out to you incl. your family members, relatives & fans.

Lots of Love & Blessings

I can remember when Michaels Thriller video came out. My daughter always danced and sang his songs she loved Michael, but when she watched his Thriller video it scared the crap out of her.She still loved him and danced and listened to his music but it took a while for her not to be afraid to watch the video. I also now have a son who is 17 and he thinks that Michael Jackson was the greatest artist and preformer ever.I started a tradition with my daughter when she was younger ever year on Halloween I would play Thriller while getting her costume on before taking her out for treats.I carried on this tradition with my son also on Halloween as this is the best song to get you in the mood for Halloween my favorite holiday. We will miss you and now that my kids are to old for Halloween I will continue our Halloween tradition of playing Thriller when I have grandchildren RIP Micheal and I hope where ever you are now you are happy and at peace free of pain and suffering. The music and talent you gave the world will never be replaceable by anyone you were one of a kind. Rosella Alfonso - Philippines | 6/26/2009, 12:12 am EST

I will always remember the time he came to the Philippines. I was in High School and we planned on stalking him in Manila Hotel where he was staying. After school we rode a taxi going to the hotel armed with our Michael Jackson Pin-ups. We pretended to visit an uncle and pressed the elevator button towards the Penthouse. We almost made it pass his room when this guard escorted us back in the elevator. Too close. That’s how fanatic we were. Michael Jackson is and forever will be the greatest entertainer of our time. I will always remember singing your songs when I was young, like “Music and Me”, “Happy” and “Ben” on our record player. In high school it was “I want you back”.
Oh my God, i really can’t believe you’re dead Michael. You will always be my idol, i don’t care what bad things they wrote or said about you but one thing remains true to this day, ordinary people and the biggest names in the world idolize you for what you are, your FOREVER. You have made a significant mark in the World, Michael Jackson, may you rest in peace.

Respect for Michael | 6/26/2009, 12:26 am EST

I remember wearing out “Off the Wall” and then “Thriller” so badly that the grooves on the vinyl wore out and I had to buy them again-never did that with any albums but those two. Michael was the whole thing when I was a teenager in the 80’s.

I would like to request that those of you that feel the need to come on this website to tell us what an awful human MJ was, there is a time and place for that-and this ain’t it. I know he had his dark side-needless to say it was well documented. But please allow this to be a time when if you don’t have anything respectful to say, please stay silent.

My sincere sympathy goes out to his family, and most of all his kids.

Thanks Michael.

Shelly | 6/26/2009, 12:28 am EST

Michael you were a wonderful entertainer. I loved you since I was a child, my children love you. And I promise to make sure you live through my future grandchildren. To the family: you will ALL be in our prayers, Catherine and Joe you produced an AMAZING child! And to everyone that is not able to see anything but the negative about Michael: I am truly sorry for you. Because to speak on this man, especially at such a crucial time for family, friends, and fans is just totally disrespectful, and WRONG. Let everyone mourn in peace. I LOVE YOU MICHAEL! RIP

I do really really wish that this is just a “publicity stunt” for his “This is it” concert in London.
I am not a big fan of Michael Jackson but when I heard the news this morning, I was really shocked (and still am)and was in tears.
We’re having a terrific weather here at the moment but bcuz of MJ’s death, everytime I look outside, it’s so gloomy.
My feeling at the moment is a mixture of sadness and anger. Sadness because of Michael Jackson’s death and anger to all the people who made these false accusations about MJ.
I can’t talk anymore, I am really really sad and about to cry again. We all love you Michael Jackson.

Jimi Hendrix, Elvis, John Lennon, I will remember vividly the moments I heard of their passing… And now Michael Jackson. A life of extremes for that gifted little boy who won our hearts with A.B.C. and continued to gift us all with his incredible talent. Not one of us know what it was like to be Michael Jackson only the tragic symptoms of his self hatred, his plastic surgery, ill health, childhood of alleged abuse, at best the victim of money grabbing predators, and at worse?… No matter what, the music, dance and pure demonstration of Gods gift will live on long after most of us. God Blessed you Michael Jackson and we were all the better for your brief time on our planet. I hope his beloved kids can understand what their father has given to us all and take peace from that. I despair for them and his family. At least it’s all finally over for him now as he rests with the angels. Maybe he was always to good for this world. Thanks Michael..RIP..Jo

Khaled Arisheh | 6/26/2009, 1:57 am EST

I still tell the story to my friends everytime his name comes up. 20 years ago we went to a mall with my mom and I saw the suit and hat that michael wore in moonwalker and I wanted it right there and then but my mom said no and I went into such a fit that I felt guilty all my life for it and never did it again we have never argued with my mom ever since. But I got the hat atleast. I later lost it moving from house to house but I’m proud to have worn it and to say that story. Michael may you rest in peace you will be loved forever.

Ishee | 6/26/2009, 2:01 am EST

He was able to break the barriers and gain fans from all generations. I don’t think there are any words to express my shock of hearing the news that such a talented musician has passed on.

Simos-Athens | 6/26/2009, 2:13 am EST

I can not believe it. I’m really in shock. Rest in peace Micheal, we will miss you much.

eco | 6/26/2009, 2:13 am EST

Michael forever!

Krish | 6/26/2009, 2:16 am EST

This is the greatest loss in history. I cant express how devastating the news has been to me. The greatest icon ever is no more with us. RIP Michael, you will always live in our hearts.

Seth | 6/26/2009, 2:50 am EST

I was half hoping this was some kind of publicity stunt or hoax, Thriller was the 1st record I spent my own money and bought and his songs were the first I ever learned by heart.

Barish (Turkey) | 6/26/2009, 2:57 am EST

He was the first singer I loved and admired, since watching his videos like Smooth Criminal and Bad, I could never like a pop music artist like I did again. He possessed that amazing talent to invoke something inside you, captivating your whole attention and making you want to dance just by seeing his figures. Even though my music taste changed drastically in the last 20 years, his music and his dances still have that very same magic on me. May he find the all the happiness he deserves in the afterlife.

OOH I AM SO IN SHOCK, WE LEARNED ALOT FROM HIM.REST IN PEACE MR MJ.YOU GAVE MORE

Mark | 6/26/2009, 3:11 am EST

I grew up watching Michael Jackson as we are the same age and it is like losing a part of your existence seeing him pass so suddenly. I think the incredible weight of fame took its toll on Michael. No one could possibly endure what he lived and come through unscathed. His viewed “inappropriateness” with kids was ,I think, only Michael wanting to embrace physically a childhood that was taken from him.No way in heaven did I believe that it was anything other than misplaced emotion for a lost and unlived youth. He would never have harmed a child, ever. His incredible musical talent and charity towards children will never be forgotten! There had better be a charity concert in a month or so. Maybe have one like they gave for Freddy Mercury with artists who knew, respected and loved Michael each perform one of their chosen songs of his before a live worldwide audience and his family. I can’t think of a more fitting tribute to a man and artist of his greatness. RIP Michael and may God embrace and keep you.

Michael was a gift. God loaned him to this world as surely as he gave us the birds to bring beauty and joy through music and talent. Thursday He called him home. His family and the rest of us are bereft. Listen closely and you will hear him singing with the angels tonight!

Lynda Rose | 6/26/2009, 3:42 am EST

In reading these comments I am reminded that Michael Jackson was more than just the King of Pop; he was an INTERNATIONAL star. We don’t have much of those anymore and now we have lost one who did his best to bring us together.

We lost a music legend today. Regardless of your opinions of Micheal Jackson you have to respect him at the end of the day. He was a pioneer in music. He was one of a kind – sometimes he was different in such a profound way he could not of possibly been human. In recent past the media portrayed him as a monster or freak. He was never found guilty in a court of law for the allegations against him sexually abusing little boys. To this day I believe Micheal to be innocent of all evil crimes towards children. As eccentric as Micheal portrayed himself I never felt he hurt a child. I saw Micheal as he saw himself, as Peter Pan. A boy forever. R.I.P Micheal Jackson ~ You will be missed. You did great service to this world. You will forever be a legend!

I have loved MJ my whole life and I will continue to do so. Berry Gordy said it better than I ever can: “A Michael Jackson doesn’t just come along once in a century or a life time; he comes along once.” Rest in peace dear Michael. You have earned it.

This is truly tragic news. My first acquaintance with western pop music has been through MJ. I loved his every song, his every music videos and his every move on stage. ‘Thriller’, ‘Bad’ and ‘The way you make me feel’ are my all time fav MJ songs and vids. Mj’s music will always be with me.

Pete Wentz said it right. The Last Legend.

marc57marc57 | 6/26/2009, 4:58 am EST

As sad as the world is right now re: MJ I think that there will be much contreversy over not only how he died but all the remaining financial questions. Who will refund the tickets already sold ? He was millions in debt at the time of his death. The promoter of his London concerts did now sleep last night and may now be shopping at Target.

BK | 6/26/2009, 8:24 am EST

Few times in history people find it impossible to put word into an event because of how huge it is. This guy was simply an unusual genius that will keep generations baffled. he was way too good to be true and raised the bar of performance, a bar that will not be moved for centuries.

MARCOS / Paraguay | 6/26/2009, 8:25 am EST

Michael was above everything, the world has lost its greatest “talent” paradigm.
But, his death does not change the fact that he is and always will be a legend.

mr x | 6/26/2009, 8:30 am EST

Michael left me feeling conflicted. On one hand, he was the greatest child star ever, a phemonenal performer and Off The Wall and Thriller are as great anything I ever heard. But the horrific plastic surgery, the child molesting, the refusal to grow up, the aura of creepiness etc soured me…I couldn’t relate to him anymore, or listen to him or support him anymore. The Michael Jackson I liked left the building 22 years ago but I was hoping he would prove me wrong and succeed at doing an absurd 50 London shows.

Wow, I don’t even know where to begin. I think we all need to pray for his family and friends, especially his children. We are losing a musical icon, but they are losing their father. That is very, very hard on kids. His music is the stuff I grew up on in the 80’s. He WAS MTV. His video Thriller is still one of my faves of all time and I try and watch it each Halloween. I just cannot believe it! RIP “King of Pop” We will miss you!

He went through hard times because people chose to judge him and fall to the rumors and power of the media. WHO ARE WE TO JUDGE (ESPECIALLY SOMEONE WE DON’T KNOW)? The things I do know about Michael Jackson: he was a great musician and tried to change the world in a positive way through his music. The world will miss Michael Jackson. Life is like grass, green for a moment and wither soon. MJ was one of best, one of a kind… When I choosed my music for a rollerskate competition it was “dont stop until you got enough” Songs like Happy, Ben and mega many more…are just for me sounds that take me back to my teenage years
My thoughts goes to his family.

Michael was the greatest entertainer I have ever known. The entertainment industry piled the pressure on him and thats why he turned out with the problems he faced. He was no monster. He was deprived of a child-hood but still became the greatest. You will never be forgotten Michael!!

It is very unfortunate. Its still very shocking to me. He was one of the greatest performers in the industry.

You dont know how much I love u Micheal. You take my breath away and make my heart skip a beat. And I certainly know I’m not alone. But all these good words, praises, expression of love will never be heard by own ears. As the world has been ungrateful to criticize you of your looks and unproven accusations when they should instead be saying “Thank you for the music, thank you for the inspiration, thank you for making the difference. For that, pls live longer because I really do care”.. Its only the body Micheal. But your spirit will live w/ us forever and all of our future genrations. Thank you so much. We love you

If the rumors are true:

Elvis, Michael, Heath Ledger, Eddie Guererro. All cut down way too young because of prescription medication. It is said because many painkillers and psychoactive drugs would be unecessary if medidical marijuana were legal and accepted. The time that we allow the pharmecutical companies to stop pushing dangerous chemicals on us needs to stop. Maybe Michael’s death will shock enough people into action and help right a vicious wrong. Michael did not have to die. His children and family should not be without him. At least you and I have his music. May he rest in peace.

I am truly shocked by the sudden and tragic loss of such a inspirational being. Michael Jackson has performed my ENTIRE life, and it’s overwhelming that he’s gone. May he rest in peace. and prayers to his children and family, and other’s who loved him. Yesterday, was truly the ‘day the music died’, the end of an era. the death of the 1980’s. I grieve for you!

He was very talented, but there is a coldness and artificiality to both his music and performances that resulted in an unnatural quality – a quality that is all-too-pervasive these days – particularly in comments that overhype and overlook too much. Only a few songs are of any interest so it would not be surprising for his legacy to be more as a dancer.

It would be great if more stars actually lived and portrayed themselves in a more healthy way.

r33 | 6/26/2009, 2:10 pm EST

The comments by Quincy Jones are almost tragically misguided like much of the music he produces. It would seem that the years would have led him realize that slick, overproduced pseudo-music was far from the best thing for music or the recently deceased individual. Idiocracy is not coming by accident.

Fabian Valdez | 6/26/2009, 2:22 pm EST

Naming him an icon or a legend is underrating him. He was beyond that

MB | 6/26/2009, 2:26 pm EST

What a great humanitarium he was. He always put others in front of him. He didnt have a violent bone in his body. He was a happy and spiritual person that loved all. It seems we forget what we have gracing us until its gone. RIP Michael.

Michael is an amazing entertainer and for those to bastards that posted the distasteful messages on this board I hope you rot in hell.

Jillian O. | 6/26/2009, 2:36 pm EST

Michael was a wonderful, musican, humanitarian, philanthropist and wonderful person…period. Rock all of your MJ music today people. Nevermind the naysayers and miserable people speaking ill of him. Let us remember his greatness and the most precious gift he has left us…THE MUSIC!

Portal2009 | 6/26/2009, 3:05 pm EST

We’re okay with the comments, the stars have a point and stuck to it dramaticaly, his music and dancing seized the planet in the 80’s after he and his brothers seized the planet with the grade schoolers who were swimming in Mom’s Aretha Franklin records and their sister’s Ike and Tina Turner records, they were all there and god bless to all. The reason we are okay with Michael is because his appeal was at the “little people” level, and that’s where you find his lifestyle around boy prostitutes should anyone wonder if it’s controversial to like him after the scandals over the last decade. The plastic surgery was a bit drastic considering he was very sexy to all races in the 80’s and then apparently a skin condition and some bad advice trapped him in everyone’s Thriller nightmare, cosmetic sugery that goes and has to be repaired, we believe that led to a pain medicine addiction, and then his mind went from the pain and pressure and he succumbed to an inside who funneled adoring young boys at him, and of course we all know what any drug does to the labido, you can’t control your reactions. Of course being young looking in his 40’s and so forth, and he was gay as far as most would risk to say, so Bling, he was the best and Bling, he has gay community support as well. We are not gay, but support his Billboard performance which is unparalleled. May his soul rest in peace and we’ll keep him in the 80’s with much love and respect for what he accomplished and write off the 90’s on as a corrupt inside who took over his life with their own.

Michael Jackson was the most influencial and special man in the entire world to me. He was the biggest humanitarian the world has ever seen. His fans were his family and his love for earth animals and most humans is something we should all look at. He broke racial barriers through his music and cared for all people on every continent in this world. He was the kind of man that the world knew wasnt going to leave us and just like that… at the blink of everyone’s eye.. He left! So I will say this to everyone in the group.. Michael was more than just music, This man shared his personal life with us all and sacrificed his happiness for every fan and race on this planet. Thank You for all of your talents and love that you gave to everyone through your music…

Where is OBAMA? It’s not like we lost Micky Mouse. Michael Jackson was the greatest entertainer in our lifetime. The president should come out and speak a few words.

Simon G. | 6/26/2009, 5:31 pm EST

My heart is broken

Wayne | 6/26/2009, 5:32 pm EST

In 1977, then-President Jimmy Carter faced a similar dilemma after the death of Elvis Presley. The White House switchboard was reported to have been inundated with phone calls urging Mr. Carter to declare a national day of mourning for Presley. The president eventually issued a carefully-written statement, declaring that Presley was ‘unique and irreplaceable’ and his music ‘permanently changed the face of American popular culture.’ Mr. Obama may take a page from Jimmy Carter’s playbook in responding to Michael Jackson’s death.

Wayne | 6/26/2009, 5:33 pm EST

OBAMA SHOULD SPEAK!

I agree with Wayne, the President should come out and say something to give the people who loved him a bit of rest.. You know Mike’s music also reached a ton of people dealing with stress, low self esteem and other mental problems that dealt with life. It was also good music for every culture, rap, some light rock, latin, asian, pop, R&b etc. We have to learn the lesson he left behind for us. Elvis, John Lennon, and others had a long lasting effect on us all because these people reached out to fans across the world….

Shanice | 6/26/2009, 5:53 pm EST

Obama should speak, I agree.

If Obama is asked about MJ and his sudden passing thats one thing, But for him to call a pres conference of make a special anouncement is NOT what he should do. MJ was an American Icon and a part of the fabric of our lives. BUT, Obama has WAY more imporant and pressing problems that need his attention.

Geeze! What to say? What a loss for the world of music. He was a natural born talent. I grew up with his music and videos in the day of Corry Feldmann with his red leather jackets top hats and one glove mimicing Michael Jackson. Having lost my sister not long ago I know the pain of a lost loved one.. I feel for the family of Michael…..

we can’t find words, so we’ll use the words of another artist which partly describe th elast years until yesterday of the great Michael Jackson!! MJ we miss you !!

No one ever told me when I was alone
They just thought I’d know better.. better…(oooooouuuu)
No one ever told me when I was alone
They just thought I’d know better.. better…

The hardest part, this troubled heart has ever yet been through now,
Was heal the scars that got their start inside someone like you now,
For had I known or I’d been shown back when how long it’d take me,
To break the charms that brought me harm and all but would erase me.

I never would or thought I could, no matter what you’d pay me,
Replay the part you stole my heart, I should have known you’re crazy,
If all I knew was that with you I’d want someone to save me,
It’d be enough, but just my luck, I fell in love and maybe…

All that I wanted was…

Now I know you better,
You know I know better,
Now I know you better!

So bittersweet, this tragedy won’t ask for absolution,
This melody inside of me, still searches for solution,
A twist of faith, a change of heart kills my infatuation,
A broken heart provides the spark for my determination.

No one ever told me when I was alone,
They just thought I’d know better, better…
No one ever told me when I was alone,
They just thought I’d know better, better…

All that I wanted, was…

Now I know you better,
You know, I know better,
Now I know you better!

I never wanted you to be so full of anger (anger),
I never wanted you to be somebody else,
I never wanted you to be someone afraid to know themselves,
I only wanted you to see things for yourself.

All that I wanted, was…

Now I know you better,
Now we all know better!
All that I wanted was…

If I were you, I’d manage to avoid the invitation,
Of promised love that can’t keep up with your adoration,
Just use your head, and in the end you’ll find your inspiration,
To choose your steps and won’t regret this kind of aggravation.

No one ever told me when I was alone,
They just thought I’d know better.. better…

No one ever told me when I was alone,
They just thought I’d know better.. better…

For anyone who has ever seen, felt or heard his art, we are all honored to have been alive in this generation to experience the magic of Michael Jackson. I love you, Michael

Steve Minton - Tucson | 6/26/2009, 8:19 pm EST

MJ was never my preferred form of music, and of course he allowed his mondo bizarro eccentricities and those nasty allegations to irreparably morph him from the King of Pop into Wacko Jacko. Who can deny though the galvanic grooves of his monster pop hits…his electrifying presence as a dancer, performer and effortlessly adroit singer…and the irresistible pop confection of those early Jackson Five songs? It’s a horror and a pity and a twisted self-fulfilling prophecy that he was unable to see through to his vision of a comeback tour and redeem himself and re-imprint his image on the national (and international) psyche as the musical genius he was…beyond all the tabloid freak show. As William Carlos Williams wrote: “The pure products of America / go crazy.”

Deano | 6/26/2009, 8:32 pm EST

“Gone too soon” will never have the same meaning for me again. Ironically it’s now a song about himself.

I can’t stop crying….i don’t think even he realised how much his music touched so many in such a positive way.

We will never forget you Michael. Rest in Peace.

BobbyGringo13 | 6/26/2009, 8:43 pm EST

Yes, Michael was and is an icon. But for people to say Obama should come out and say something is the epitome of ignorance. For what? What in the world would that accompolish? He would catch hell for it anyway. It’s not like MJ was without controversy. The right would have a field day with it. That would be a terrible move that is not needed in any way. Besides, no disrespect, but we don’t really know if the man SHOULD be revered as a person anyway. I’m sure the parents of those kids wouldn’t appreciate Obama taking time away from Iran and health care to speak on his passing. I’m blown away by these comments.

For the last number of years Ive never really thought too much about MJ nor have i ever thought of myself as a massive fan of his, but with his passing i realize that he was a part of my life all along, his songs on the radio, the palpable excitement of his premiers… In a world made up of the cliches of celebrities and flash of the pan corporate icons, he truly connected with EVERYBODY… he was the one and only true common denominator we had on a world wide scale; We saw him grow up while we also grew up… His presence was part of birthdays, graduations and engagements… Even in the end he was always there like a lost relative you havent kept in touch with but recall fondly. This is one of those rare moments that will forever mark humanity’s timeline. Thank you for being there, Michael… from Steve.

At 39 years, I am heartbroken for his family.. He gave this world 45 years of himself… He was a gift from God to this world… He didn’t have a normal childhood and I so cry for that, he was pushed so hard to become the superstar and musical talent he became… He was a special memory in my life.. May he find peace now with his God.

I loved the Jackson 5. It was their music that got me through a lonely adolescence. Michael’s body of work is so rich and extensive. I only hope that he and his family know how many hearts they have touched. May each of them feel the prayers that are being lifted up in their behalf. Thank you all for sharing your talent with us. We have been blessed

chelle | 6/27/2009, 12:59 am EST

My parents loved Motown and I was exposed to The Jackson 5 from the time I was a baby. When I was in elementary school, I watched The Jackson 5 cartoon and played the 45 of “Ben” on my little girl record player. At 13, I warped my copy of the Jackson 5 album, “Destiny” by playing it over and over while dancing in front of my bedroom mirror.

When I was 15, my parents finally let me go to the local teenage disco, and I remember screaming and running out to the dance floor every time a track from “Off the Wall” was played. Then, during my Senior year in high school, my mom and I watched Michael Jackson’s star-turning (and awe-inspiring) live performance – “the moonwalk heard around the world.” My mom and I were both enthralled. In five minutes, Michael Jackson had become larger than life.

Later that year, my girlfriends and I got together to watch the premiere of the video for “Thriller” on MTV and two years later, even though most of us were in college, we called to remind each other to watch the premiere of “We are the World.”

Another couple of years later, I insisted that the DJ play every one of MJ’s Top Ten hits at my wedding reception, and when my daughter came along in 1988, Michael Jackson was still incredibly popular and showing no signs of letting up. I knew she, too, would become a Michael Jackson fan, and I was right.

Today I mourn the loss of this incredibly gifted artist who provided the soundtrack of my life, and I feel privileged to have seen his brilliance unfold from the beginning. Sadly, I never believed he’d live to be an old man. The brightest stars always burn out “far too soon.”

R.I.P. Michael.

auramac | 6/27/2009, 1:52 am EST

When I heard the news, a part of me wasn’t shocked. I hadn’t realized, however, that I had gone INTO shock. It was like a huge bomb went off in my brain. I watched the news for a while, took it all in, and then crawled into bed and went to sleep. I was incapable of doing anything else. His life, music, and death just keep sinking further and further in as the sense of loss becomes more and more acute.

Chelle | 6/27/2009, 1:53 am EST

No one ever told me when I was alone,
They just thought I’d know better.. better…

No one ever told me when I was alone,
They just thought I’d know better.. better…

And some how I seriously doubt half those people really give a rip he’s dead. It’s just another means for them to get press.

Gina | 6/27/2009, 1:35 pm EST

It often bothers me that I’m surrounded by a generation of kids who will never know the excitement of visiting a real record store, checking the billboard charts, buying an album and then going to home to listen to the turntable crackle that rumbles through the speakers. This new generation – aptly coined by the media Generation Z, perhaps as in lay-Z – live in a world of where music is purchased over the web and stored electronically in handheld micro-mini devices that are carried and seen without so much of an understanding of their owners. Nothing about an MP3 player or an iPod says anything about a person other than, perhaps, their favorite color or the size of their ears (in order to implant those ghastly uncomfortable ear buds). No, what says something about a person is their tangible holdings; those things that we save from the trash, from the yearly garage sale, from the Goodwill pile and even from the kids . . . at least until they’re old enough.

While the days of Grandma willing her china set or Grandpa passing along his pocket watch may long be gone, so too, will be the days of inheriting good music. Sure, no one really fought over Grandma’s big band collection but throughout the years one of the most tangible things we have left to future generations is music and, more importantly, the promise of becoming a true music lover. At the end of the day someone ends up with those big band albums, just like I will inherit my parents’ mass assortment of legends like The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Diana Ross and the Supremes, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Elton John and a host of other artists that have taught me to not just like music, but to love it, to understand it better than the casual fan and to somehow emotionally connect with what I’m hearing.

We used to live in a world where someone always ended up with someone else’s music collection, that someone then learned all the words, memorized the liner notes and then passed it all along to future generations to hold in their hands just as generations before had done. That’s how it always was and yet that will someday be gone, because, in the back recesses of my mind I cannot fathom the same joy being expressed in leaving behind an iPod. I can’t fathom my own children someday being giving a piece of generic plastic, instead of what I was given. On one had there’s the hand off of hundreds of dollars packed into a tiny device and on the hand there’s me opening the plastic container and wafting in the smell of the past. I cannot tell you the hours of joy it brought me combing through records as a child and even still playing them as an adult. Then again, I cannot tell you because it is something everyone should experience themselves; something the current generation doesn’t even know they’re missing as they attempt to eliminate the true music lover, altogether.

Then again, I suppose Generation Z is no different from that sub-generation of the Baby Boomers who appeared on “American Bandstand” some forty years ago and claimed a song was great because, “It has a great beat and you can dance to it!” I certainly wasn’t there when Jagger and company penned “Satisfaction” but I seriously doubt that was the instant reaction they were hoping for. Then again, anyone can claim to “like” music, but it is rare and far and few between to find someone who can be called a true music lover or, as I like to put it, someone who is as passionate about music as most people are about the air they breathe. I like to think I’m one of those people, because I can rightfully say I have never arbitrarily bought or even listened to a song that I thought was even potentially worthless. People say life is too short to complain, well, in my book, life is too short to listen to crappy music. In a world where most people statistically would choose to be deaf over blind, I know I can live without my sight, but I cannot imagine a world without good music.

I was reminded of my own sentiments yesterday when I learned of the death of Michael Jackson. Don’t get me wrong, I never pictured him as an old man, nor did I expect him to outlive me, but in a strange way a little part of my childhood died with him. The same part (of my childhood) that suffered when my first childhood crush Michael Hutchence died and the same part that will suffer again in time when Madonna dies, I’m sure. True music lovers understand this type of loss because to us, a person is about his or her music and nothing else, because as a true fan of music I can’t speak ill of Jackson and not just because he’s no longer with us either. Like Elvis and John Lennon before him, Jackson was so immensely talented no amount of media scrutiny could take away his contribution to the music industry – not for real music lovers anyway.

I’m sure there are those who scoffed at the news of his death, participated in name-calling or simply claimed they didn’t care or that it was no real loss to them or maybe not even news at all. To each his own, but I would imagine most of those people haven’t been to many concerts, wouldn’t pay over $30 to see their so-called favorite musical act or, even worse, think there’s nothing wrong with today’s pre-pubescent brand of pop music. Those are people who will only mildly care about everything in life in lieu of feeling completely passionate about anything. Those are people who view the world with blinders; who are easily entertained and who will pass that same lack of enthusiasm to their children and future generations. Those are the people who turn their car radio dials to the worst pop station the city has to offer and proclaim it’s good music, but hopefully it was those people who were greeted with real music yesterday afternoon.

As I drove across town yesterday afternoon listening to all the radio tributes to Michael Jackson I realized I hadn’t purchased a pop album in years. In fact, one of the last true pop albums I bought was “Bad” on cassette when I was about eight-years-old (unless of course you count Madonna’s “Immaculate Collection”). To me that says something about music and about the fair-weather consumers who feed into the sheer and utter crap that vomits from every soccer mom’s mini-van on any given day. Miley Cyrus, The Jonas Brothers, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga – none will ever compare to Michael Jackson, much to the misunderstanding of the current generation. Those acts are simply mere fads, riding aboard bandwagons that will either, crash and burn without notice or slowly dissipate over time. Don’t get me wrong, everyone falls for at least one musical fad in his or her life (mine was a mixture of Debbie Gibson and New Kids on the Block, although Gibson, in her own right produced, wrote and sang more songs than Miley Cyrus will ever even learn). In all seriousness, though, fad artists are everywhere and they affect every age demographic in every era (remember all those grown men who bought Paula Abdul records in the late 80s?).

Still though, the key to enjoying fad artists is to admit you are not a real music lover or at least admit that there is more to music than you will ever understand, although there’s hope for everyone. Case in point, my mom never liked The Beatles as a kid so when a neighborhood friend moved to Hawaii and bequeathed, to my mom, her favorite Beatles 45s my mom thought it was a strange gesture. Nonetheless my mom accepted the gift, gave a few of them a spin and then – still not liking The Beatles – tucked them away for safe keeping with her own record collection when most music neophytes would have probably just thrown them away or sold them. Yet my mom kept them and I believe she did so because she is a true music lover. She recognized, even at a young age, that the Beatles were music legends and, unconsciously over time, perhaps because of those records, she learned to respect them as artists and eventually purchased some of their music on her own in later years.

The same is true for artists like The Beatles, The Supremes, The Beach Boys and perhaps someday for groups like U2 or Coldplay. People will always claim to have never liked something or to favor something else, but that’s less about our actual feelings and more about the society we live in and the expectations we try to meet. It is also why this generation – Generation Z – may only know Michael Jackson as an accused child molester or the white guy who used to be black or the baby-dangling guy. Of course, that’s all these kids know because this is the electronic generation, the generation that will always care more about the color of their iPod than the music stored in it. Then again, according to published reports, sales of Michael Jackson’s music skyrocketed within hours of his death. True music lovers bought CDs, DVDs and even old albums at vintage stores and then, when it all sold out, those same people caved to the new generation and went online to buy. Up until his death, only one Michael Jackson album had even cracked iTunes top 100 downloads and now almost all of his albums reside in the top ten. While I know most of those Internet sales were probably true music lovers, there’s a little part of me that hopes, even in death, Michael Jackson has brought the current generation up to speed, because good music never dies, but bandwagons always run out of steam.

MJ paid off 2 separate families, in the millions, to keep their mouths shut about his “child” problem.. After the 2nd one, he ran away just like O.J. but he actually made it to another country. Runninn=guilt. MJ has said on numerous occasions that he thinks it is a “beautiful thing to share your bed with a child”. YOU ARE ALL MISSING THIS!
I feel bad for his early life, so full of abuse but people, wake up, this guy was a very sick man who hurt others. The ultimate narcicist. Bill Maher will be the only one to comment publicly on all of this on his show next week.

I grew up watching Michael. I tried to imitate him, tried to sing like him, to dance like him. He has been, and will certainly now be even moreso imitated, but he will never EVER be duplicated. The Lord Michael great talents to see what Michael could do with them. The Lord gave us Michael to see what we would do with him. Now that Michael is gone, what will YOU do with yourself to honor his memory? If you run with hate in your heart, learn to be like Michael and choose to walk in LOVE; if you only know how to make others cry, then be like Michael and learn to make others smile. If you truly loved him, then follow his pattern – learn to LOVE EACH OTHER!! As Michael once sang, “Make the world a better place – Heal The World” and start with the “Man In The Mirror” and make that change.

Yildiz | 6/28/2009, 1:34 am EST

Michael Jackson is indeed the LAST LEGEND! So many people have been positively influenced by this phenomenal singer, songwriter and dancer…..on one of his albums he wrote that when he danced the music was taking his body and made it move by itself….he was a canal for the true perfect music and ritme. He also always acknowledged that his gift was divine and he was always expressing his gratefulness for that. My children and me loved him so much, we went twice to the History tour in Amsterdam and had tickets to go and see him in London. There has never been anyone like him! His Love for Humanity and All the suffering children in the world was great.
It is appalling that he has been so abused by awful and bad people who accused him just to get to his money! What can one do if someone is telling hard lies about you and is asking money to stop these lies? Michael was so sensitive and vulnerable that ofcourse he paid them to just shut up! People who have eyes to see and ears to hear can see for themselves in his interviews about his recent life that he is not a person who would abuse children. He was so full of Pure Love and Compassion that it is hilarious to think these ugly things about him. I have always believed in his innocence and hope that more and more peole will start to realize the true essence of his Being! Michael I love you and hope you have found the Peace and Freedom we all wish for you! Thank you for ALL you have given us and SORRY for all these hardships caused by an ugly part of Humanity! We pray for your beloved children and family!!!

Runninn=guilt. ….I don’t know what country you live in but “running=guilt” is not part of our legal system. I guess you were there during all of the allegations, court hearings, etc. Until you realize that the media only tells you what they want you to know, you need to stop this crap. You nor anyone else on the planet knows what happened except MJ, those children and GOD! All I know is that he was not found guilty. How do you know that he “hurt children”? You don’t. How do you know that the parents of those children weren’t just seeking money? You don’t. So take your comments and post them where they matter-in the garbage!! R.I.P Michael!!!

To Annoyed At You – We will never know for sure what MJ did or did not do. I find it suspect that the child’s own Mother denied any wrong doing on MJ’s part. I believe the boy’s father was motivated by money. In the court papers MJ always maintained his innocence even after the case was settled. He was an easy target – a wealthy, eccentric celebrity. As a mother of two, if my child was sexually abused I would fight to no end to get that person punished & in jail – not take a large payment & drop the charges. Money would not make me feel better.

MJ’s talent is undeniable. I remember watching the Motown 25th Anniversary special on TV as a young child. I was mesmerized by his performance of ‘Billie Jean’ that night – it was pure magic. Part of my childhood died with him. RIP Michael Jackson – we’ll never forget you.

Forgive me if I sound thick asking this, but why MUST Obama issue a statement? Don’t get me wrong, I’m grieving over this like everyone else, but why is everyone pressuring him to say something regarding Michael? His press secretary would release some fancy “We are sorry about his passing” statement to the public, and then what? What difference would it make? The only “tribute” that would mean something would be a Michael Jackson Tribute Concert, just like the one they did for Freddie Mercury. There are more than enough stars who would care to participate in such an event, and anyone who claims to truly care about Michael would not hesitate to make a few phone calls and make it happen (I’m talking to you, Quincy Jones). That would mean so much more than a bunch of well-written statements put together by celebrities’ publicists that basically repeat the same sentiment.

His voice has touch so many peoples lives and he gives hope where the light no longer shines.

Michael Jackson had that “other” world gift that is very very rare. You don’t see or witness a person that often, who knows the invisible ties to the performing arts. Michael Jackson took creativity to another level that nearly reached divinity. Michael Jackson was an excellent team player who knew how how to be a leader and be a great follower. He was a continuous inspiration for me to become a song writer. On behalf of the Gospel Sound Street Music, Michael we love you.

why is a chris brown comment included?? is he relevant??

Alexis M. Carson | 6/29/2009, 12:34 am EST

This is a very tragic moment in history, Michael Jackon’s death is a huge loss not only for music but for the world. MJ was more than a muscian he was a true humanitarian, he truely did reach out and touch many people all over this world. I know many of my family moments involved imitating MJ and watching his Movie/Videos as they each came out. We watched MJ grow as a performer and as a person. For all the negative vibes that MJ is getting about his different behaviors, I feel as if you have to keep in mind that MJ was only trying to find himself, imagine growing up in front of people being in the entertainment buisness for 45 years, you don’t know how to be a person because you never learned. So with that being said MJ was only acting in manners he thought were suitable because he never learned. So in this time of mourning I think we should cherish the happy moments that Mike provided for us. I with all of my free spirit love Michael Jackson for what he has done and for what he will continue to do even in death.

Oh and to the comment about why was Chris Brown’s comment necessary, it was necessary because he was paying homage to Michael Jackson the one man that shaped his career. Chris Brown has messed his name up with the Rhianna incident but keep in mind who are you to judge him, you are nobody the ultimate judgement is left up to God. I am not codoning his actions but I am not crossing him out in life because it was a mistake that was made and no one is perfect. So what was irrelevant was the comment about his comment.

R.I.P MJ I will forever miss your music

Noel Dolor (Philippines) | 6/29/2009, 3:26 am EST

True, I am aware of all the negative publicity about Michael Jackson, his bouts with prescription drugs and a childhood that he never got to enjoy. But as an artist, Michael will always be remembered as a maverick whose extraordinary abilities of talent combined with that ‘X-factor’ that makes him stand out as a pop icon truly revolutionized showbusiness. He was an outstanding combination of talent, energy and attitude that propelled him to become a Jimi Hendrix, a Sidney Poitier and a Barack Obama of that era as he transcended all boundaries and smashed all notions of race to become a global success story.

Even for a fortysomething Generation-X aficionado of classic rock, new wave, punk, alternative and progressive rock like me, I have always affirmed that it was Michael Jackson who truly redefined, revolutionized and elevated music video as an art and a means of making a statement– thanks to ‘Thriller,’ which equally opened doors for music video as the definitive medium for changing music trends. And directly and indirectly, Thriller has equally convinced and influenced some of the progressive rock acts that have gotten their start during the 80s–A-ha, 10,000 Maniacs, John Cougar Mellencamp, Simple Minds, R.E.M., Sting, Midnight Oil, and even Germany’s Nena and X-Mal Deutschland, to name a few–as well as those classic rock figures and groups who got some sort of revival during that same decade, such as The Grateful Dead, Jethro Tull, John Fogerty, The Moody Blues and George Harrison–to come up with their own music videos to reinforce the power and longevity of their music.

Aside from being the King of Pop, Michael Jackson can also be remembered as the one that revolutionized music video! Thanks, Michael for Thriller!!!

The eternal king of pop

The rider of the moon dancing with the stars
He now dances with the planets around the sun
He will always be a bright star
He will always be eternal
He now dance to Billie Jean in comets
Finally Thriller play beyond the universe
The boy who did not want to grow now turned angel
Finally, Michael flew

I am so heartbroken over the loss of the greatest music icon! Michael Jackson ment so much to me. I used his music, videos, and pics as an excapeism into a world of magic and wonder. When I daydream I am in that world, on stage being Michael. he was always there when I needed cheering up. I love you forever Michael Jackson

I only hope and wish we get to hear unreleased music he has done over the years.

I know there is enough new music to keep us going for many years.

Lets hope Sony and any other mucis comapny will release all his lost and unreleased works, and videos of all his concerts.

He was the King of Entertainment, King of Hearts, King of Hopes, King of Love, King of Kindness, King of Creativity and King of his fans.

I love Michael Jackson I grew up on his music. The Jackson five was the only group I seen on stage when I was a little girl, I hope he got his wings and let him fly in to peace. I wish the mean people would stop trying to tear him down. I would like black people to keep in mind our history how hard it is in this world for us to be the wonderful people God made us and never forget that he was in a world at a young age in the days when the USA was not kind to us. may Michael rest in the arms of God who will be the only judge for his soul An I hope his so called friends that are getting on shows tearing him down would stop Peter Pan I will meet you in neverland

“Michael Jackson was killed by Martin Bashir and his “negative and pseudo-friendly ” document in which was suggest an Idea that Michael Jackson is pedophile .Than Michael Jackson withdrew from seclusion and started taking drugs very much.”

THAT is ridiculous.

Michael dodged a bullet in 1993. He should have stayed away from underaged boys after that.

But, no, he had to do things HIS way.

If you want to blame anyone for the way he turned out, blame his father. I’m glad Joe Jackson is not getting a dime of Michael’s money.

Senaitiable | 7/1/2009, 8:39 pm EST

Thank you Michael. Your music has given immeasurable joy and helped fill loneliness. I first heard your music growing up in Ethiopia, later I stood in line in New York at midnight to be one of the first to purchase your Dangerous CD. I remember being in Thailand and watching a ‘lady-boy’ impersonator dance to your tunes. You were seen, heard, and admired globally.

I hope your kids and family take some comfort in knowing your impact and how much we miss you. You are truely loved.

Billboard of the past without the bar code stuff was were it was at.”White Christmas” by Bing Crosby the best selling single of alltime until 1997 recharted on Billboard’s Hot 100 multiple times. “I Want To Take You Higher” by Sly & The Family Stone hit the top 40 in ‘70.”Monster Mash” by Bobby “Boris” Pickett received a new life and hit the top 10 in ‘73.”Twist and Shout” by the Beatles recharted in 1986 and landed at #23 in ‘86.”Stand By Me” by Ben E. King zoomed back in the top 10 for a 2nd time in ‘86 . The great Louis Armstrong had a top 40 entry with “What a Wonderful World” 17 years after his death.2 versions one an original and another a stone cold calclated remake of “Unchained Melody” by The Righteous Brothers charted in the top 20 in ‘90.Queen topped it’s original chart peak of #9 by going to #2 (F***in’ #2 for God’s sake) in ‘92 with Bohemian Rhapsody. As recently as ‘99 Prince recharted with 1999 (#40). Billy Vera hit #1 when “At This Moment” was re-released in 1986. Chubby Checker hit #1 TWICE with “The Twist”.I’m sure I’ve forgotten a few more times songs reentered Billboard’s Hot 100 and for that I’m sorry to those who hold music near & dear & not merely as “product”!Under Billboard’s present chart methodology none of these special magic moments would have ever happened. Billboard magazine is prepretrating a hoax by not acknowleding the increased airplay & downloads for Michael Jackson’s songs from June 25, 2009 & forward. We’re talking about a company (Nielsen) that bought their main competition (Radio & Records)& destroyed it & swept it under the rug because radio stations & labels were using their charts instead of Billboard.AT40 & Rick Dees dropped Billboard long ago as a source for their countdowns. When they ignored Michael Jackson’s accomplishments in sales impact & airplay this past week they became irrelevant.February 2, 1959 is acknowledged by Rock n Roll purists as the day the music died.July 2, 2009 is that day for me.RIP Hot 100 and Billboard 200.

With Michael’s passing is the end of a time, a generation and the start of a very uncertain period in music. As those that have come before him (Rolling Stones, Elves Etc. you need those to whom to look up to for inspiration. This has been the formula since music was recorded. Although things are very different now that we are in the age of the Internet and digital media. CDs are on life support, Records are no longer a valid representation of an artists popularity, ability or marketability. In addition to what it means to be a musician in this new untested and unpredictable environment.

Each generation needs a hero. One who challenges the establishment, doesn’t follow the rules of engagement and takes the path less taken. A visionary as one who sees things as they could be and not for what they are. Michael was such a person and for which we may never see again. It is my hope that in this new testing ground that someone will emerge to take the reigns and pick up where Michael left off. I strive for this every day as a Musician and a human being. Michael you have been such an inspiration to so many and may your journey into the next realm be a good one.

DEAR JACKSON BOUGHT A DIFFERENT KIND OF MUSIC AND DANCING STYLE IN OUR LIVES.MAY HIS SOUL REST PEACEFULLY

Vivian | 7/6/2009, 1:46 am EST

I was bewitched seeing Michael Jackson on stage. He was just shy away in normal life but he was the King of Pop on stage. No one could ever sing his music except himself and no one could even come to his success. Many people in this earth would have never wanted to admit that he was a genius, then keep reminding us about his problem, his financial trouble. I laugh at them because when they die, they won’t have what they wish, they could not buy what they want, they could not even achieve any dream. But Michael Jackson he had them all. So what if the Never land is not his, so what if he is broke right now. Could he take anything with him now. But let’s remember he lived and died as a wealthy. And not many of us could do so. RIP Michael Jackson. You will live forever as long as there is music in this world.

I find myself looking at his pictures feeling so unbelievably sad And for all those doctors that prescibed all the medications he was taking should voluntarily give up their liscences andbe embarassed to call themselves doctors . Their oath states to “never do harm”, but yet all these stories about multiple medications and multiple drug aliases are frightening! Why didn’t anyone do something????? If all these people loved him so much, why didn’t anyone recognize his pain and help him?! The world is an emptier place because he’s not here anymore. I feel like I lost a family member. So sad. Everyone lives, and everyone dies. One of the saddest facts known to man. But Michael Jackson did more then just live and die. He did everything a one person couldn’t dream of doing. He performed miracles. By showing the world how he can sing and dance. Opening Never Land, and donating to many charities, are things normal celebrities wouldn’t do. He was one of the most talented people on Earth. For those people who tried sueing him, and hated him, well then congrats to you. But you best not forget the passion and soul that will live on forever in his music. Michael Jackson was incredible, and everyone knows that. My best and loving symphathys go outto his children and loved ones. Michael Jackson truly was, and still is, the King of Pop. In loving memory of Michael Jackson. 1958-2009.

I never think he had scandals…a person like him would never do such things..I believe him..I wish I ever met him..and being friends with him..that would be wonderful, and in my country nothing is wrong if parents let their children friends come and sleep together,we usually share a room together with many people, it doesn’t matter….everything depends on the person it self, if from the inside and personality you are bad, then bad thing may happen,,and on the contrary…think I can never let you go Michael..Love you and for your kids..

DeborahFfrench | 10/9/2009, 11:18 am EST

I will never stop loving you Michael.
Never.
You are a hero – no, its more than that – your truth, beauty and unparalled integrity are, to me, unquestioned. I urge people to go thesilencedtruth website, click on the heading ‘Remember’ and just read what people are saying. In particular read Brooke Shields. I am at work right now in London, phones are going crazy around me and I am trying to hide my face because I am crying. Actually I feel like screaming. I wanna ask anyone, can anyone tell me please.
How could we have let this happen?
How could we have let Michael be so wounded by lies and the media, that his spirit gave out? Why do Nancy Grace, Gloria Aldred, Diane Dimond, Martin Bashir, Tom Sneddon still have jobs, why are people still listening to them? Where is the apology, the f****** apology
for this .. this taking of a life? This beautiful, beautiful boy who gave us nothing but joy for decades, who became a man, transformed himself, music, video, dance and the act of giving itself – before our eyes; was being killed slowly by the stress of being derided, disbelieved and hunted. Now all I hear is, drug this, Murray that, bald this, needle marks that, autopsy etc. There is no respect, no value, no shame for what has been done. Forget Murray, that’s a red herring. Michael was tormented and exhausted, he took proforol to sleep – and to forget.
I know how he feels.
I have never been more heartbroken or disappointed in humanity than I am now.

I can not desccribe how I felt the day I learnt of the worlds lost. In my eyes Michael was a voice of the world. And he spoke of love, and hope, peace and faith. My only wish is that I was born in the earlier Generations to experience such a vivid embodiment of music.

I would take his place if I could, even though the world is not worthy of such divinity. In all the ages to come there will never be anyone who will be able to touch our hearts more so than Michael.

And when I hear somebody degrading him… I walk up to them and Punch. Them. In. The. Face.

Decadent children.

I am disgusted that I am a part of such ignorance.

So know this,

Even though I never had the privellage of meeting Michael Jackson…

And am a part of the young generation…

Do not for one second doubt that I love him any less than the rest of you.

He asked us “Will You Be There”.

And in truth…

We Weren’t.

-x.
