Before Metallica took the stage for their epic set at Austin’s Stubbs during SXSW this year, a crew of expert Guitar Hero aficionados performed game versions of the band’s blistering songs. Now a 28-year-old Staten Island man named Paul Cataldo is getting his turn in the spotlight: the couch rocker will open for Aerosmith at New York’s Jones Beach Friday night by performing the Guitar Hero version of “Sweet Emotion” in front of the crowd of 17,000, the Daily News reports. Cataldo, a YouTube contest winner, put on a Steven Tyler-style top hat and vintage Aerosmith shirt for his audition video. He admits “Walk This Way” is his favorite of the band’s songs, “But I didn’t want to try anything too difficult, and I wanted a song I could do justice to. It’s the one that I did the best.”

Aerosmith’s special edition of Guitar Hero came out almost exactly one year ago. Next up for the franchise: Van Halen. That title is due in November or December, reports Blabbermouth via a posting at the Van Halen News Desk Website.

I was originally a fan of Guitar Hero, and still occassionally enjoy playing it, but I think Jack White is right on this one. The youth culture is slowly but surely mistaking video gaming skills with authentic guitar playing skills. Metallica and Aerosmith aren’t helping matters.

Um…South Park made a joke about people doing this in an episode a couple years ago. I thought that would prevent it from ever happening. I guess I underestimate the stupidity of the powers that be in the music industry.

I’m tired of hearing all of these righteous musicians complaining about these games. At least we are getting a window of time here late in the 2000’s were kids are becoming are interested in “classic” rock songs and not the crap played on the radio and Mtv. They have to develop a passion for music before they are going to pick up a real instrument and but the effort into developing a skill.

Hey it’s better than kids shooting each other and blowing stuff up…

Aerosmith is a rock and roll band? I had the misfourtion of seeing them once, and they hardly rocked. Joe Perry is far from the Guitar God u people make him out to be. The people who go see Aerosmith are the same degenerate drunken fools who go see Tom Petty and the Mudcrutchers. THIS IS REAL FUCKN ROCK N ROLL MAN!!! Ha the 70s are long gone. There plenty of innovative bands in 2009, that dont have to rely on songs that were hits in 1973. If i paid good money to go to a show, i dont give a shit about seeing some random vidio game deushnozzle playing Guitar Hero. Maybee Aerosmiths retarted fanbase, might think its cool after pregaming in the parking lot for four hours. Please dont try and tell me that seeing some idiot with to much time on his hands, playing a flawless Sweet Emotion on Guitar Hero is cool, because if you think its kool you have no idea what it is like to go to a show and have your face melted.

Who really wants to go to a show, and see some deushnozzle gamer play a flawless sweet emotion on guitar hero. Is this what Rock n Roll has come to. Gimmie a break!!

Anybody that has a negative coment about about this just don’t get it. I am 49 yo and I love playing Guitar Hero, I also know how to play real guitar instrument at an amateur level and I can carry a tune, but video games are a for of entertainment just as listening or playing music is a different form. This new Guitar Hero video game is just putting the two together and making some people a lot of money, what a concept. Why didn’t I think of that. Now anybody that doesn’t appreciate this is because they are not good enough to play professionally and be a rock star and they are not good at playing Guitar Hero. So suck it!
