Ray Davies Says Kinks Film In the Works, Reunion Unlikely

The Kinks will be the subject of an upcoming feature-length film directed by music video vet Julien Temple, who also helmed the 2007 doc Joe Strummer: The Future is Unwritten, frontman Ray Davies told The Independent (via Spinner.) While Davies didn’t say whether the film will be a documentary or a biopic, Temple did tell the Generalist in 2007 that his next project would be a doc on the “You Really Got Me” band called Kinkdom Come. Temple previously directed music videos for the Kinks’ “Come Dancing” and “Don’t Forget To Dance.”

In November 2008, after a series of rumors about the Kinks finally reuniting, Rock Daily reported that the band — Davies, his brother Dave Davies and drummer Mick Avory — had gotten back together to perform music. While that’s still the case, Ray Davies said it’s unlikely the band will officially reunite. “I will continue to play with ex-band members like Mick Avory from time to time. With Dave, a lot of it is psychological. I’ll guide him in, and coerce and nurture him, and when the time is right I suppose I’ll even shout at him again,” Ray Davies said.

Dave Davies, who famously fought with his brother during the band’s run, suffered a stroke in 2004. Ray Davies told the Independent his brother is improving enough that he’s able to drive an automobile again. “I’ll work with Dave, and whatever he can play we’ll create something around it together. We’ll function just fine like that,” Ray said, adding that “I gotta tell you — I miss the Kinks.”

You miss the Kinks? Drop all of the crap and reform, damn it!

Can’t wait this will be top notch. Another guy who should be in the songwriter Hall of Fame

a) I don’t miss the Kinks

b) Kinkdom Come is a horrible title

Ari | 6/24/2009, 2:57 pm EST

They sucked, nobody cares.

Jere | 6/24/2009, 3:55 pm EST

Yes, yes that’s all well and good but when the hell will the US get some decent remasters of their classic albums? Even the imports disappeared from Amazon.

Jungleland2 | 6/24/2009, 4:17 pm EST

I was fortunate to see the Kinks in the early 1990’s – great show at way too small a venue.

That said, Ray is better off with a crack back-up band, like McCartney and Brian Wilson – bands that can hit the harmonies and really deliver the goods every night.

ted | 6/24/2009, 4:37 pm EST

Jim,testicular,ari, you guy’s don’t have a clue.

Joe Schmoe | 6/24/2009, 4:55 pm EST

Ray is one of the great writers of rock music. Seeing them in the past as they were, I think I would be disappointed seeing them today as they are now. Long as I gaze at my Waterloo Sunset I am in paradise.

CR1ZZ | 6/24/2009, 8:02 pm EST

The Kinks never sucked. Granted their reunion would’nt be insanely hyped like Led-Zeps but it would pull in a sellout crowd at ANY venue of devoted fans. ‘Lola’ is quite respectively one of rock musics greatest songs whether RollingStone realises or not. I introduced that song to my mates at school and they went nuts for it, and them, and myself, are 14 going on 15, LIVING IN NEW ZEALAND!
We now listen to ‘Waterloo Sunset’,'You Really Got Me’,'Set Me Free’,'Sunny Afternoon’,'All Day And All Night’ and ‘See My Friends’. Just to name a few! Simon and Garfunkel just kicked off their reunion tour in New Zealand and they were bigger than the Kinks so why don’t the Kinks just do a string of small scale shows beginning at the bottom of the world.
And they will be just as good as back in the day. Truely great muicians never change, especially to their fans.

Joe Puma | 6/24/2009, 9:17 pm EST

Here’s wishing Dave Davies well as he continues his recovery, and if he and Ray are able and willing for a reunion then why the hell not?I’d love to see them reunite, and having never gotten to see the Kinks perform live,I’m ready when they are!

Chuckio | 6/24/2009, 9:40 pm EST

These characters that are saying the Kinks sucked are probably Fall Out Boy and Blink 182 fans. They have no idea how important this band is and how great a songwriter Davies is. And they will never get it.

Kimbob. | 6/25/2009, 12:06 am EST

The Kinks suck?!
Listen to Powerman. Enough said.

Steve | 6/25/2009, 12:57 am EST

One of the most underrated bands ever. They influenced so many bands who achieved greater success. Keep rocking Ray you are a genius.

Ben | 6/25/2009, 1:12 am EST

I thought Kinkdom Come was an awful title too when I saw it, but its kinda tongue in cheek cause The Kinks always used their name in ridiculous ways.

Lush | 6/25/2009, 5:07 am EST

Now this is what I’m talking about…a great band that is timeless after all these years. The Kinks were a GREAT band and,of course, people are still interested in them and why wouldn’t they be?

It was bands like the Kinks, the Beatles,Zeppelin, the Doors that paved the way for other bands and, somewhere along the way, there was a detour because today’s music sucks. There are a few bands that are good but a majority of it sucks. How many of today’s bands are going to be remembered 20 years from now when Zeppelin will still get played on the radio?

I feel sorry for the kids today that listen to bands like Fall Out Boy,Marlyn Manson,Slipknot.,etc.,etc. You guys will never know great music unless it came and bit you on the ass.Is Slipknot really music?Hell No.You can’t understand what they are saying.Just a bunch of guys, dressed up like clowns, going on stage and screaming…wow..that takes real talent…

Kids today do not know real music.LONG LIVE ROCK AND ROLL.CLASSIC ROCK IS THE BEST…

ray davies is god. nuff said. now get the band back together.

If you miss them..THEN REUNITE | 6/25/2009, 9:04 am EST

I really miss the Kinks!! I was also lucky enough to see them live in Worcester MA in 1983 (when Mick Avery was still with the band). They were so great!!!!

A Kinks reunion is way overdue. And plese do it right with Ray, Dave, Mick and Pete!!

Marc | 6/25/2009, 9:44 am EST

The Kinks were ahead of their time and the music is timeless. Perhaps, Ray should tour with his own band and recruit ex-Kinks members as it progresses. I think if the tickets were reasonably priced, The Kinks could re-brand themselves. Despite attending 700+ concerts in my lifetime, I never saw The Kinks, although I did see Ray on his “spoken word” tour in 1997. Any incarnation of the band or Ray performing Kinks’ classics with a full band would be a treat.

Dean Wien | 6/25/2009, 10:31 am EST

It would be great to see The Kinks again. Some of the best Kinks shows that I’ve seen is “The Misfits” tour at Central Park’s Wollman Rink. The last Kinks show I saw was probably the last they performed as a group at Westbury Music Fair in Long Island.

Ray wants to reunite the Kinks immediately.

Dave seems very reluctant.

You can’t have the Kinks without Ray AND Dave.

Anonymous | 6/25/2009, 12:46 pm EST

These guys are all in the mid-60s now. If they ever plan on reuniting, they better do it soon…. We’re running out of time!

rian | 6/25/2009, 1:33 pm EST

The most underarted singer songwriter is Gordon Lightfoot, and Im not talking about Edmund Fitzgerald check out his whole catalog although Sundown is deifniteley a favorite.

deano | 6/25/2009, 4:05 pm EST

Time marches on, and all good things and all that. Sad to think the Kinks are gone for good.

Mr.Sandy Maclean | 6/25/2009, 4:06 pm EST

I have followed ‘The KinKs’since 1964,and met them officially at Pye Studios in London in April 1967.I met all of the original guys and was very lucky – while in studio to see Ray add his voice to the ‘B’side of Wonderboy, called Polly.Later,I had a drink with them in the ‘Masons Arms,’Marble Arch.I have met the guys many times since then, and only wish that Ray and Dave would ‘bury the hatchet’and get back together again singing brand new numbers. As far as I am concerned,Ray Davies is the world’s best song writer, beating The Beatles etc;and I rate him alongside ‘Bach’and many of the world’s best ever composers and producers. His latest album with The Crouch End Choral says it all.God bless Ray,and The KinKs(whoever they be now)….sanjak01@aol.com

auramac | 6/25/2009, 4:33 pm EST

The Kinks were one of the greatest bands who ever lived. Dave is making a lot of noise, but after the stroke- he may simply not be up for it. Dave needs a band, and, as suggested, he could do what Brian Wilson does- find a good, creative, collaborative backup. It’ll never be the Kinks but beats his solo acoustic nostalgia tour, which was fine for a while- but we need new creations from new inspirations for this man!

auramac | 6/25/2009, 4:34 pm EST

Sorry- I meant “Ray needs a band..”

Ray | 6/25/2009, 4:44 pm EST

I thought the Kinks were great…in the 60’s. I thought the Stones were great…until about 1972. I thought Queen was awesome…until Freddie died. I thought Led Zeppelin was incredible…until Bonham died. I thought The Who were pretty damn good…until Moonie and Entwistle died. Why must all of these bands do it all over again? Wasn’t the fame the first time around enough? I’d rather remember them the way they were, and yeah, I do remember them from that era. I’m 59 and I pity the kids of today who don’t have the display of talent we enjoyed in the 60’s. But please, half of the Who isn’t the Who. Three quarters of Led Zep isn’t Led Zep. Turn off the spotlight, boys. Time to exit stage right.

Al V. | 6/25/2009, 6:10 pm EST

Did he ommit the Beatles because of the way John Lennon died? I think we must be satisfied by Ray as the lead.

Cj | 6/26/2009, 1:00 am EST

I have to agree with Ray. There is something special about having an original line-up. Once a member dies, it’s too late forever. A lesson lost on Eddie Van Halen….truly sad.

tijuanabibles | 6/26/2009, 9:43 am EST

I saw the band in the mid 70’s and
they were absolutely amazing. Arthur, Village Green..,Lola, Muswell, Soap Opera, Schoolboys…no one chronicled everyday life as insightfully as Ray Davies, and no one played guitar like brother Dave. I made a mix tape for a close friend shortly before he died and included, “Where Have All The Good Times Gone”. We listened and cried. Whether they get back together or not, the Kinks will always be remembered. God bless the Davies brothers.
“Everybody’s in show biz, everybody’s a star.”

krolpolski | 6/26/2009, 3:08 pm EST

While Ray’s two solo albums are fabulous, I really hope that the Kinks reunite to record some more songs.

My first Kinks concert was the Misfits tour and I saw them at the Uptown Theatre in Chicago (top row). I managed to see them two more times (the last being after Van Halen covered You Really Got Me).

I would love to take my kids to see this band, as they know all the songs and appreciate them, too.

Dave, don’t be a stuborn ass. Better days are ahead.

drwildeyes@aol.com | 6/26/2009, 8:30 pm EST

I believe the kinks are the greatest band outside of the who and please if their is a reunion please play at venues like the atlantic city borgata and not the large hockey areanas

Bruce Allen | 6/27/2009, 4:03 pm EST

I have always loved the kinks.
I quote lines from the soap opera. Lola, and girl you really got me.
Sure miss you Ray, please tour again, We need your witts.
As life is like a vapor,… So we all need to reach out and love somebody. Keep going.

Dayglo Kid | 6/28/2009, 1:59 am EST

1969
Fillmore Manhatten
Looking for The Who,struggling thru the moon landing Broadway tickertape parade, the Kinks came through, said they would play a gig at Silvermine, alas the Yanko Camaro that Frank was driving was too fast for the task.

Ron Fowler | 6/29/2009, 4:58 pm EST

The Kinks are one of the 2 or 3 best all-time bands. Ray is a great songwriter, but I miss the interplay between him and Dave (who’s also a great songwriter, singer, and guitarist). Ray doing Kinks songs with a choir and anonymous session guys is NOT the Kinks!

Tarek Fahmy | 9/19/2009, 3:34 pm EST

The Kinks are one of those indispensable bands in rock history. They have produced – at least – five classic albums in their prime. They are at least as good as the Beatles, Stones or Zeppelin and they deserve all the praise they can get.

Jane Eyrehead | 10/11/2009, 10:33 pm EST

Ray Davies at his best is just as good as Lennon/McCartney, and at his worst he is still better than anyone else. Damn, I have been a fan since I was 15 and Ray still knocks me out. I can’t wait until the concert in SF in November.

Charles Jenkinson | 10/19/2009, 12:15 am EST

garage band back in the day..
all about the ‘kinks’…
they rule!
If you haven’t listened to their
songs and rythm and humour(that’s
the best part of the Kinks, their
humour!)
Oh well to bad for you!
