Phish Capture Famous Live Vibe on New Summer Album “Joy”

Rolling Stone’s David Fricke recently spoke with the reunited Phish to get the story behind the Vermont quartet’s comeback album, which RS can exclusively report will be titled Joy.

Three weeks after their triumphant three-night reunion concerts at Virginia’s Hampton Coliseum in March, the band and producer Steve Lillywhite spent three weeks in New York’s Chung King Studios, mapping out the 10-song album and recording all the basic tracks live in the studio. Joy “feels more like a live record than a lot of our live records,” guitarist Trey Anastasio tells RS.

Many of Joy’s songs have already become live staples on Phish’s reunion trek, and they unleashed new gems during both of their headlining Bonnaroo sets. Fans are already connecting to the Lynyrd Skynyrd-flavored “Kill Devil Falls,” “Stealing Time From the Faulty Plan” and the epic 13-minute closer “Time Turns Elastic,” which the band released as a digital download in May. According to Anastasio, “Time” took 278 takes to get the song right, as Lillywhite forced the band to nail down all 15 sections of Anastasio’s prog-rock closer. “I wanted every member to play every section perfectly,” Lillywhite said.

Lyrically, much of Joy draws from Anastasio’s struggles with drugs and his return from a 2006 arrest for possession. The album’s title track was written when Anastasio’s sister was fighting cancer earlier this year (she died in April). Still, Trey insists that the title’s message “is affirming with a dose of reality.” For much more on Joy, which Lillywhite calls “the best Phish album ever,” be sure to check out Fricke’s full report from the studio in the new issue of Rolling Stone, on stands now.

Joy track list:

“Twenty Years Later”
“Backwards Down the Number Line”
“Stealing Time From the Faulty Plan”
“Light”
“Joy”
“Sugar Shack”
“Ocelot”
“Kill Devil Falls”
“I’ve Been Around”
“Time Turns Elastic”

Phish is back and the world is a better place. The best live band in music will continue to play to thousands of fans and sell out arenas everywhere. Thank You God for Phish coming back!

Matt | 6/24/2009, 5:23 pm EST

“Best album ever”. Come on.

Going to be a good one, but lets not get ridiculous. Besides, we have heard Joy, TTE, KDF, STFFP, Ocelot, so its mostly out there.

JacksonSneed | 6/24/2009, 5:25 pm EST

Can’t wait to hear it. Myself, ToekeYo, and SMS will be glued to the stereo! Go phish!

ugh. these guys are still around?

lotseen | 6/24/2009, 5:40 pm EST

not so sure about “best album ever,” but it will be very very fun. ocelot, number line, alaska kill devil fall, faulty plan (i’m leaving out a few here, but can’t remember all of the others) were all rockers this tour…the jones beach ocelot has been on my repeat for weeks now, and kill devil falls seems to be a major jam vehicle for the band. number line is dripping with sentiment, and alaska is a happy tune they all seem to dig on… and you can tell they are all feeling it after a much needed break. here’s to 20 more great years with our best friends.

freddiewah | 6/24/2009, 5:45 pm EST

the phish=back
the jedi=in the building/happy and healthy

Come on. | 6/24/2009, 6:05 pm EST

“Best album ever?”

I don’t think so.

It will be in the top 14, though.

DanZ | 6/24/2009, 6:10 pm EST

Now if only they’d schedule some more concert dates! Wasn’t able to score any tickets to the shows so far.

crosseyed | 6/24/2009, 6:13 pm EST

It says “best PHISH album ever”, not best ALBUM ever. Chill out guys.

Spoof | 6/24/2009, 6:34 pm EST

To: DanZ
Just go the the shows. I went to 5 shows. Except for Asheville, people were practically giving away tickets. Some did just give them away.

Da Troof | 6/24/2009, 6:49 pm EST

Two words describe this band perfectly.

OVER
RATED

Dan | 6/24/2009, 6:59 pm EST

Overrated is one word.

boone riddle | 6/24/2009, 7:34 pm EST

hopefully time turns elastic is 17 minutes on the studio album… that’s 17 minutes I never want to experience again.

Frunk | 6/24/2009, 7:44 pm EST

So is “asshole”.

suny buff | 6/24/2009, 7:49 pm EST

stop hating greenhouse!!

umphreak | 6/24/2009, 7:59 pm EST

overrated? how many bands can you name that have played from midnight until the sun comes up? Festivals that have thirty or forty bands cant draw 70,000 people yet only one band can do that on their own. SEVEN TIMES! overrated. Da Troof your funny.

Ocelot | 6/24/2009, 8:00 pm EST

Where have you gone?

Parker | 6/24/2009, 8:19 pm EST

Suzy Greenberg makes me giggle.

el jefe | 6/24/2009, 9:54 pm EST

ALAKSA!

Physh | 6/24/2009, 10:21 pm EST

Phish should change the i to a y.

Ryan | 6/24/2009, 10:26 pm EST

Helllll yeah. This album should be tight.

Viboflife720 | 6/24/2009, 10:28 pm EST

The tour was great. I’m sure the album is great. Some of the phans, I’m not so sure about. After almost 5 years of waiting for the reunion, I see and hear so much negativity it makes me almost sad. Phish is one of the top 5 live bands ever and I hope they continue to be for many years. Enjoy yourself. It’s only music.

fluffhead? | 6/24/2009, 11:13 pm EST

im not sure why everyone is hating on phish right now…im excited for this album and excited to see phish touring for hopefully years to come.

Wilson | 6/24/2009, 11:54 pm EST

Phish hasn’t released a good studio album in over a decade…

maybe theyre due?

purple mike pants | 6/25/2009, 12:23 am EST

anyone who is a true fan and or has seen the band perform these songs over this past tour knows this album will be a rockin gift from the gods. glad lillywhite is back in the mix. thrilled phish is back.

Nea Mc | 6/25/2009, 1:51 am EST

I hope everybody hates Phish, so I can go to the smallest venue possible. INCREDIBLE live band, INCREDIBLE musicians. please!!! Nobody buy tickets. Be happy with the Goo Goo Dolls and Green Day, they are sooooo great. Hope I can get back to losing my mind at The Living Room, The Orpheum, The Paradise, or anything even close to that size. Phish heads…. shhhhhhhh…. let’s keep this to ourselves ok? ;)

Calli Moma | 6/25/2009, 9:14 am EST

This album makes me feel like a woman.

Party Time | 6/25/2009, 9:16 am EST

Can’t wait to put this album on repeat at my next Release Party!

doseraper420 | 6/25/2009, 9:22 am EST

i’m gonna get you SMS!

Da Troof | 6/25/2009, 11:29 am EST

That was a small joke, Dan. I thought Phish fans had a good sense of humor. I guess I was WRONG!!!! How can da troof be wrong? oh well.

Jesus Christ | 6/25/2009, 12:37 pm EST

Their best album ever? Wow, that is like saying Trey’s best lyrics ever. It doesn’t take much to get over that threshold.

ecb | 6/25/2009, 1:54 pm EST

“Phish is back and the world is a better place. The best live band in music will continue to play to thousands of fans and sell out arenas everywhere. Thank You God for Phish coming back! ”

while i don’t think it’s an act of God, the above quote sums it up… good for us who embrace it, if you don’t like em, change the channel.

randomdeadhead | 6/25/2009, 3:18 pm EST

Wish I could be there! I miss them days.
The world is definitely a better place withm on the road.
Until we meet again……
Keep Dancin!

STFU | 6/26/2009, 11:12 am EST

Michael Jackson | 6/26/2009, 2:39 pm EST

The only ‘Joy’ around here was the rigor mortis I felt in my pants as I moonwalked to the other side of the river.

To Umphreak | 6/26/2009, 2:45 pm EST

Tons of crappy garage bands play from midnight until the sun comes up. Taylor Swift plays to undreds of thousands of people too. Popularity and stamina does not equal quality.

Phish is done | 6/26/2009, 4:55 pm EST

Umphrey’s mcgee, when its all said and done is a much better band and performers than phish . Sad but true ..deal with it smelly hippies.

Jeff | 6/26/2009, 5:04 pm EST

Been to several Phish shows this year and they are back, big time. Can’t wait for this new CD. “Joy” is the perfect title. My favorite band is back!!

And yes, Umphrey’s is very good, too. Been into them for years, especially Anchor Drops which EVERYONE should own a copy of.

But they’re not on Phish’s level. Maybe someday:)

smith | 6/26/2009, 10:58 pm EST

what does this band have to do with attempts to steal my credit card information through fony websites?

aric | 6/27/2009, 12:18 am EST

Umphree’s fans are dorks!

KCdiggler | 6/28/2009, 12:11 am EST

i like let me lie….trey’s solo song. i have a 2 yr old and he loves the music. it’s a total “kid” song….gonna take my bike out, gonna ride it just how i like…..but the jones beach version is very very nice. come to KC will ya???

il bondini | 6/28/2009, 3:39 am EST

278 f—ing takes for TTE? SRSLY? you’d think it would have come out better sounding, no?

ponyboy | 6/29/2009, 8:55 am EST

phish is the shit!! looking forward to the new album….they blow any other band out of the water in concert….even in 2009! umphreys who? never heard of em.

Bruce | 6/29/2009, 1:20 pm EST

I saw both my first Phish and Umphreys shows this year and I also have seen The Who, Grateful Dead, DMB, Pearl Jam, Yes, Ramones, the Boss, and others, and Phish were a lot better than Umphreys and one of the best shows I have ever been to and I am looking forward to a few more this summer.

bayouclay | 7/2/2009, 8:49 pm EST

Panic rules, fuck phish and phisheads.

Big Phishy | 7/9/2009, 7:08 pm EST

They are almost as good as the Mars Volta, securely in 2nd among jam bands.

marco esquandolas | 7/12/2009, 4:32 pm EST

mars volta above phish???
umphreys??? are you kidding??? is that a joke???
are you mentally disabled??

derekpm | 7/12/2009, 11:23 pm EST

i mean come on | 7/17/2009, 1:13 am EST

Okay…obviously phish is more talented than umphreys…now dont get me wrong umphreys is one of my favorite bands in this time along with the tribe…but phish is a classic and always will be. if you like umphreys and you dont like phish you obviously dont understand music. oh and anchor drops is not their best album. if you want to hear umphreys download a live show its the only way to go

Icculus | 7/19/2009, 3:20 pm EST

I declare this album worthy. READ THE PHUCKING BOOK!

I declare this album worthy. READ THE PHUCKING BOOK!

Anonymous | 7/19/2009, 6:40 pm EST

Umphrey’s seemed like they were about to emerge as the most talented, new and fresh thing out there until Phish got back together and now it’s like they’re somewhere between forgotten and an afterthought. And “local band does ok” is way better than anchor drops.

TreySide | 8/7/2009, 4:11 pm EST

get the “joy” boxset off DryGoods. It comes with the Joy CD, the Joy Box will include ten individual Limited Edition posters designed for each of the album’s 10 songs, a second album entitled Party Time, which includes demos, soundcheck and studio outtakes and a DVD capturing live performances from the first half of Phish’s summer 2009 tour, including footage from the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival and the tour’s opening dates at Fenway Park in Boston.

oceans of osyrus | 9/2/2009, 3:42 pm EST

“Joy”…it’s a smoker…solid and in my opinion the best studio work they’ve done since Billy Breathes…

Funky Butch | 9/7/2009, 7:35 pm EST

Overrated? Why, then, does every review of the new album talk a bunch of sh** about the band? And c’mon, comparing Taylor Swift to Phish? That’s like comparing Brittany Spears to Led Zeppelin. Long live the Phish!
P.S. “Smelly Hippies” . . . sooo clever, haven’t heard that one yet.

hahahaha | 9/8/2009, 3:21 pm EST

who cares about a studio album? and do you really need the approval of some article writing jerkoff??? phish is sick, go see em, trade shows and get your groove on.

deadchef | 10/17/2009, 8:55 pm EST

Do whatever it takes to make yourself happy, just smile
Free yourself from the ratings game and enjoy all the music
