After Rock Daily reported that Kris Allen would be working with the Fray frontman Joe King in some capacity for the American Idol champ’s debut album, King spoke to MTV about how the pair’s first two-day studio session at Timbaland’s Virginia studio went. While King didn’t actually watch this year’s season of AI because his band was touring overseas, he said was made aware of Allen’s performance of the Fray’s version of Kanye West’s “Heartless,” so when Allen emailed King about possibly collaborating, King simply responded “Yes!”

“It was a very good vibe in the studio. There was no pressure — we just had breakfast, got to know each other. It was all very organic after that,” King told MTV. King is currently on tour with the Fray, but he said he’s “in the studio mixing the rough demo right now” of his session with Allen. “It doesn’t have a title yet. It doesn’t even have lyrics — but there is a lot of gibberish,” King said.

In that gibberish, however, there is a melody. While Timbaland wasn’t present at his studio during the recordings, the producer’s brother and his crew were there. “It added this great energy to the session. When the boys heard the track, they started hanging around.” King told MTV. “Timbaland’s brother said if Timbaland was upstairs and he heard this melody, he’d walk in the studio and say, ‘That’s a melody.’ ” King added that the cameras are following Allen’s post-Idol progress.

As Rock Daily reported yesterday, Allen will also work with former Evanescence keyboardist Dave Hodges (who is also teaming with Adam Lambert) and Amy Winehouse producer Salaam Remi.

Can these articles please stop saying Kris did The Fray’s version of “Heartless”? Kris did HIS OWN version of the Kanye song. Kris’ live version of “Heartless” isn’t really anything like The Fray’s, if you would actually listen to the two versions…

Anyway, it’s cool that Joe King liked working with Kris and that the whole process as “organic”. It sounds like Kris has been able to hook up with a diverse group of songwriters/producers for his debut album. I’m looking forward to it!

Kris’s version is not like Fray’s Heartless. It is not even the same.

I’m really excited to see what they come up with together. Sounds like it was a good start.

For the love of Mike, Kris did not do the Fray’s version of Heartless. He did his own cover of Kanye. The Fray’s is like a dirge.

When Kris Allen first met the Fray’s frontman, the first thing Kris said was “You must be joking!”.

Got to repeat the following:

Gee I wonder who will be around longer: The Fray who made it on good songwriting and rigorous touring or some idiot who won a singing contest on TV. American Idol is an insult to music. They preach “uniqueness” and yet expect the idol to be ‘versatile’. So you’re supposed to be jack of all trades and master of none or unique? Kind of a contradictory of terms isn’t it? These guys and girls do their disco night, their Journey covers night etc, listen to drunken Paula and cynical Simon rant on about whether or not they have what it takes and when they win they go to the studio and record an already written/recorded album. What a manufactured piece of garbage. The irony is that the true great singers and frontpeople like Bono or John Lennon would never win American Idol because they would never lower themselves to doing 80s style Karaoke to get 15 minutes of fame. When they sing the MEAN it. And King did The Fray’s version because the Fray covered it first and unless King’s version is closer to theirs than Kanye’s. Stop comparing karaoke singers to legitimate artists please.

I said king but I meant Kris. Doesn’t matter. I won’t remember his name in 5 minutes anyways.

You know how I know you’re gay? You like the Fray.

whats up with the haters in this blog? the Frey band has some incredible talent ( I know I just saw them last night) and Kris Allen is a separate talent that has the privilege of meeting Joe King who has an amazing songwriting and vocal ability. I think only good things can come from this??? Ya think?

to ????? What a negative person you are!!! I guess Carrie Underwood was just an ” Idiot” when American Idol catapulted her true talent to winning multiple awards, sell out multiple concert venues, all for her voice and ability to sing songs written by others. You my friend are the idiot! Kris Allen will be saying CHA CHing all the way to the bank!
