Jonas Brothers Vs. Hanson: How the Bands of Brothers Match Up

6/23/09, 4:24 pm EST

The Jonas Brothers and Hanson sure seem to have a lot of cosmetic similarities: they’re both bands of three brothers named after their surname who make girls go bananas. But there’s actually more to it than that. With the Jonas Brothers hitting the road for their World Tour 2009 (check out photos here) and word of a new Hanson release on the horizon, Rolling Stone took a closer look at how the two bands line up:

“Poison Ivy”
Hanson recorded a cover of the Coasters’ 1959 track about a promiscuous woman on their 1995 independent release Boomerang. Their take features the Hansons (then aged 15, 12 and 10) singing in three-part harmony over an unexpectedly techno-sounding beat. Eldest brother Isaac — the only one past puberty — sang lead, as he did on much of Hanson’s earlier material.
Jonas Brothers penned an original track using the poisonous plant as a metaphor for a relationship you can’t get away from on their new Lines, Vines and Trying Times. Middle brother Joe sings most of the track, though youngest Nick handles the funky interlude on the bridge.

Jonny Lang
Hanson featured the acclaimed blues guitar prodigy (and older brother of this season’s American Idol contestant Jesse Langseth) on 2000’s This Time Around including the funky cha-cha “You Never Know” and the angsty break-up tune “Hand in Hand.”
Jonas Brothers brought Lang on board for Lines, Vines and Trying Times‘ “Hey Baby” which blends Lang’s blues with a funk similar to Jonas’ “Poison Ivy” for another relationship lament.

Steve Greenberg
Hanson were discovered by Greenberg in 1996, who signed them to his then-employer, Mercury Records. In 2007, Greenberg re-launched S-Curve records, now the home of Tinted Windows, Taylor Hanson’s side project with James Iha, Cheap Tricks’ Bun E. Carlos and Fountains of Wayne’s Adam Schlesinger.
Jonas Brothers were signed to Columbia Records by Greenberg in 2005 before landing a deal with their current label, Hollywood Records.

Adam Schlesinger
Hanson have known Schlesinger since the mid-’90s, and now he and Taylor form one-half of pop supergroup Tinted Windows.
Jonas Brothers worked with Schlesinger on their 2006 debut It’s About Time, co-writing “I Am What I Am” with the rocker.

Robert Schwartzman
Hanson recorded “Wake Up” for the 2001 soundtrack to Princess Diaries, which co-starred the Rooney frontman.
Jonas Brothers co-wrote “Letting You Down” with Schwartzman and performed the track at one of their sold-out Madison Square Garden gigs last year. Rooney also opened for the Jonas Brothers in 2008.

SNL Skits
Hanson appeared on the show in December 1997, making a cameo in a skit called “Torturing Hanson” in which Will Ferrell and episode host Helen Hunt tried to inflict the pain of repeated “MMMBop” listenings upon Isaaac, Taylor and Zac.
Jonas Brothers appeared on the show in February 2009, making a cameo in a skit in which Alec Baldwin played the older brother who Joe, Nick and Kevin were kicking out of the band.

Grammy Awards
Hanson were nominated for Best New Artist in 1998, but lost to Paula Cole.
Jonas Brothers were nominated for Best New Artist in 2009, but lost to Adele.

Charity
Hanson has been raising money to fight poverty and HIV/AIDS in Africa since the release of 2007’s The Walk. The band has also been leading one-mile walks before their concerts to raise funds and awareness.
Jonas Brothers founded the Change for the Children foundation to raise money for organizations such as the American Diabetes Foundation and St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

Taking Their Friends on Tour
Hanson brought fellow Tulsans Admiral Twin on 1998’s Albertane Tour, and in recent years chosen to bring back opening acts they’ve befriended for another outing.
Jonas Brothers chose Honor Society, an act they’ve befriended since discovering last year, to open their summer tour.

Each other
Hanson have told various media outlets they wish the Jonas Brothers luck, with Taylor telling MSNBC, “I hope they can translate what they’ve done into a career — a long career — in a similar way that we’ve been able to for many years.”
Jonas Brothers referred to the inevitable comparisons in “That’s Just the Way We Roll” off 2007’s Jonas Brothers, singing “You got moves, I got shoes, let’s go dancing/pop and lock, battle dance, against Hanson.”

Got any more similarities between the two groups to add? Let us know in the comments.

Honor Society opened for Hanson’s NYC show in 2005.

Huh, didn’t know they had so much in common, good article :)

ashley | 6/23/2009, 4:57 pm EST

this is pretty funny…

Kevin the Robot | 6/23/2009, 4:57 pm EST

Rolling Stone:
Hanson were ignored by the respectable magazine in the mid 90’s, because they were a band that only appealed to pre-teenage girls.

Jonas Brothers get daily fluff stories on Rolling Stone, due to declining sales and loss of credibility.

ashley | 6/23/2009, 4:58 pm EST

this is pretty funny…

what about contrasts? hanson refused the saturday morning tv show and lunchbox fame. jonas, on the other hand…

guitar_davey | 6/23/2009, 5:02 pm EST

Hanson are cheesy bubblegum pop with an expiration date of about two years.

Jonas Brothers are cheesy bubblegum pop with an expiration date of about two years

frog leg | 6/23/2009, 5:04 pm EST

its a cool idea to compare 2 bands like that with similarities. you could do the same thing with new kids on the block vs linkin park.

wwwhoa | 6/23/2009, 5:19 pm EST

Singer songwriter Bleu co wrote music with both Hanson and the Jonas Brothers, including the song which mentions Hanson, That’s Just The Way We Roll.

Both Hanson and the Jonas brothers moved around to different places when they were younger for their father’s job. Hanson lived in Oklahoma, Virginia, Trinidad, Ecuador, and Venezuela. Jonas Brothers lived in Arizona,Texas, New Jersey and California.

Both bands have parents who were musicians and sang in choir in high school, and got married young.

in 2006, both bands played a show in San Diego on the very same day at the very same venue-the Jonas brothers did a morning show and Hanson did a night show. Their names were both on the theatre marquee

Emm | 6/23/2009, 5:23 pm EST

The guys in Hanson are very talented singers who harmonized amazingly well. They also didn’t sell their souls to make a profit with ridiculous merchandise and kiddie shows and movies.

The Jonas Brothers can barely sing and their harmonies are subpar. They sold their souls. ‘Nuff said.

Pfeh | 6/23/2009, 6:05 pm EST

Emm, PLEASE. Working within a corporate system is not the end of the artistic world. It’s a challenge, just like there are challenges in being indie, too. Get out of your bubble.

There are many ways to make music. Labels and marketing don’t define the.

j. toronado | 6/23/2009, 6:06 pm EST

jonas bros played in tulsa last night. hanson lives in tulsa.

Riiiight | 6/23/2009, 6:16 pm EST

@guitar_davey Except that the Jonas Brothers have already been performing and making a decent living from it for around 5 years and Hanson about 12, now. Can you say the same?

Kims ex-deeler | 6/23/2009, 6:17 pm EST

Hanson had infectious music and they knew how to sing.

I think the Jonas Brothers suck.

katie lee | 6/23/2009, 6:33 pm EST

it’s great to read an article comparing my two favorite bands but the glaring inaccuracies are a little too distracting.

Lisa | 6/23/2009, 6:41 pm EST

Nice article, although their music isn’t even remotely similar, and here’s a glaring difference…Hanson has never gotten as much attetion as they deserve from Rolling Stome for being innovators, Having crafted an independent label and viable career out of the ashes of the music industry on their own. The Jonas Bros. get constant radio play and RS press because of Disney.

Dave | 6/23/2009, 6:53 pm EST

Hanson are well better than the Jonas Brothers.

Ray | 6/23/2009, 8:55 pm EST

Hanson and the Jonas Brothers. My,my, so this is what music has become. I remember Rolling Stone magazine in its infancy. In fact, I still have that famous first edition. Never, never, never did I think for one second the great anti-establishment magazine would sink to comparing two bands like this. Hunter S. Thompson would be so proud. This must all be a bad dream…or a very bad trip.

Cat | 6/23/2009, 10:55 pm EST

I like both in different ways… sure, nowadays I am more into JB but that’s only because they are out and around more nowadays than Hanson.

Chloe | 6/24/2009, 12:22 am EST

Hanson’s single “MMMBop” was voted #1 on the most prestigious critics poll in the US, the Village Voice Pazz and Jop. That song was written entirely by the brothers, who were children at the time. The song was also #1 in 27 different countries.

The Jonas Brothers get…. ok reviews. Sort of. And their highest charting single so far peaked at #8.

Hanson have sold 16 million albums to date. The Jonas Brothers have sold roughly half of that.

And yet, The Jonas Brothers have gotten two Rolling Stone covers so far, and Hanson have gotten none.

Does someone care to explain why this is the case?

Geoge Coopman | 6/24/2009, 1:39 am EST

They both suck?

Anonymous | 6/24/2009, 7:31 am EST

oh God, i’m am seriously sick of seeing comments like: “oh my God what’s wrong with Rolling Stone, i’m so disappointed, blah blah”
i’ve seen much worse from Rolling Stone so would you guys just shut up with that?
These guys are both good in their own way. Music is about you, your personality, if you like it well then good for you, i probably will think some of the stuff you listen to is horrible and the same with you about me. People shouldn’t really label a song “bad”, it’s about how the song speaks to you, everyone has their own point of view.

GG | 6/24/2009, 9:10 am EST

It’s fine if people here like the JoBros, but don’t get mad at people who don’t and want to say so.

guitar_davey | 6/24/2009, 9:27 am EST

@Riiiight – Only for about four years here, so yeah, you’re right.

Jasmine | 6/24/2009, 11:28 am EST

Anyone who labels Hanson’s music as “cheesy bubblegum pop” can not have listened to any of their more recent music. It should be noted that their song “Great Divide” was played on a Chicago alternative station as a “mystery song” and became the number one most requested song on that station. Those music snobs were all shocked and awed when they learned who was responsible for that great, powerful piece of guitar-driven rock and roll. Hopefully that helped to open some minds.

kristen | 6/24/2009, 12:05 pm EST

Time has proven that Hanson is a more established band. It’s all about longevity. If the Jonas Brothers can do the same, more power too them. Hanson has been around forever, thus honing their incredible talents.

TeddyB | 6/24/2009, 12:25 pm EST

Rolling Stone magazine should change its name to Jonas Brothers with the amount of f-ing press they give them on a daily basis.

Joe | 6/24/2009, 3:17 pm EST

This Time Around is a great great album.

Life-long Hanson fan. | 6/25/2009, 3:18 pm EST

I think these similarities are reaching a bit. Hanson has been around 12 years, and is an independent band with their own record label. They have proven longevity, and have won the praises of rock legends such as U2. I would also argue (in my opinion) that Hanson’s songs, from day one, have had deeper meanings and use of symbolism than the Jonas Brothers songs ever will.I would also argue that Hanson’s use of harmony will far surpass any harmonies the JoBros might try to pull off. Hanson has also never sold-out to Disney. Just saying.
Long live Hanson.

HansonFan | 6/25/2009, 4:06 pm EST

I do enjoy listening to the Jonas Brothers songs, however I find their live renditions of songs somewhat lacking in real ooomph. JoBro recently recorded a live session at BBC Radio 1 in the UK and I could not bare to watch the rest of the performace as it was so bad. Hanson do have the upper edge, they are older, independent and far more sucessful than a media spawned group of brothers.

LollyB | 6/25/2009, 6:01 pm EST

Aside from the fact that they are 3 brothers – I see no similarity. I think Hanson are brilliant – always have – and I just don’t hear ANY talent whatsoever with the JoBros. They can’t even harmonize – and their musicianship is like NIL. And I do agree that Rolling Stone has never given Hanson their due. So shame on them.

aurelia | 6/26/2009, 8:29 am EST

so, if they have SO much in common, how come Rolling Stone hardly ever mentioned Hanson, even back in the day?

i know they have a few things in common, but Hanson is a lot more talented in my opinion.

Alyssa | 6/29/2009, 8:46 am EST

It annoys me that every so often it seems as if the Jonas Brothers are becoming more like Hanson. Well apparently they are just “Jonas” no. Hanson use to be known as the Hanson Brothers but dropped the “Brothers”. At least Hanson writes songs that actually mean something and not garbage about a pizza girl. They will forever and always be my number one favorite bro band and the “Jo Bros” will only be…..blah and whatever!!!

laura | 6/29/2009, 9:07 am EST

Jonas Brother’s are good in their own right but in my opinion Hanson’s harmonies are much stronger and have been respcted by major people like Bono for years!

stella | 6/29/2009, 12:09 pm EST

jonas brothers ain’t got shit on hanson

Jessy | 6/29/2009, 1:26 pm EST

I have been a Hanson fan for a long time(1997)… I only like one song form The Jonas Brothers(Love bug)… I have seen Hanson Vs. Jonas Brothers in other places… I think…No…I KNOW… Hanson is so much Better!!! Most Hanson fan will say the same thing… HANSON ALL THE WAY!!!

Hanson's cousin | 6/29/2009, 3:01 pm EST

well i being the hanson’s cousin and meeting them has given me a say so. i am a jo bro fan and i think nick is hot. now that i got that out of the way. the hansons r nice and the jo bros r nice and i like them both so idk why people keep arguing about who is better! they r both good and everyone has their opinion. so thats all i have 2 say!

JoBros fan!!!!! | 6/29/2009, 5:28 pm EST

JB so wins this competition! JB is the most amazing band in the world with HUGE hearts and amazing talent. I say Hanson is copying JB!!!

denzepp58 | 6/29/2009, 8:43 pm EST

I think they are equal in every way…they both cater to pre-pubescent teen-age girls and know how to exploit them and will never be taken seriously because they will never out grow beyond that market. Once a boy band, always a boy band…will never transition to ROCK BAND…can’t be done… just posers, they are really good at that..look at the cover, they POSE really well…

angelica | 6/29/2009, 8:51 pm EST

JONAS BROTHERSS FOREVER!

Tamy | 6/29/2009, 9:36 pm EST

Hanson is better!!
Talent, your music is wonderfull.

Hanson is talent!

Jonas…mmm only Disney’s merchandise…

Hanson foverer!!!!!

Jasmine | 6/29/2009, 10:34 pm EST

so here is how we pick who wins.. when n if..which i doubt the jonas brother will be still putting out cd over 12 years from the major label debt..then we can say jonas has the upper hand.. but i doubt that they will cuz hanson is the best and will always be the best..sorry jonas.. so pray for a comeback that wont sell ur souls..to late u already did ur on disney

Lauren | 6/30/2009, 2:53 am EST

It just depends on what you have grown up listening to. If Hanson is your age and they are what you listened to you will like them and vice versa

…but im jonas all the way

DudeMann | 6/30/2009, 4:23 pm EST

Very interesting article. I hope the Hanson boys help the Jonas boys out after Disney inevitably throws them off the bus. Hanson has continued to make it on their own without a major machine selling their product and telling them what to do.

JONAS FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! | 7/1/2009, 10:04 am EST

PUH-LEEZE U HANSON FANS!!!!!!!!!!! I WAS FORCED 2 SEE HANSON IN CONCERT WHEN I WAS 5 AND I HATED IT!!!!!!!!!!! MMMBOP=WTF??!?!? THEY CANT SING!!!!!!!!!!!! JONAS BROTHERS ON THE OTHER HAND ARE AN AWESOME BAND W/ TALENT AND WERE BROUGHT UP W/ OUT DISNEY!!!!!!! DUHHH!!!!! THEY WERE THIS FAMOUS B4 CAMP ROCK U MORONS!!!!! I’VE BEEN TO 2 JONAS CONCERTS AND THEY WERE FLIPPIN FANTASTIC SO GO TO ONE, AND SHUT UR BIG FAT MOUTHS ABOUT DEFENDING THAT STUPID TRUE-BLONDE CAN’T SING BAND!!!!!!!!!!!

Elody | 7/2/2009, 10:23 am EST

I actually don’t think it depends on who you grew up listening to. I’m probably considered “too old” for either band, as I was in my late 20s when Hanson became popular. However, Hanson’s music is very meaningful and enjoyable to me, while the Jonas Brothers just seem like pre-fabricated Disney tripe. I’m sure they have some talent, but I’m not hearing evidence of it in the music I’ve heard.

Jesse | 7/2/2009, 5:46 pm EST

Haha. Interesting article! I had no idea who Hanson was but then I checked them out on iTunes and they made the song mmmbop!! My gosh how could you compare them!! When the Jonas Brothers make a memorable song like that then maybe you could use them in the same sentence. The jo bros are cheesy and have 1 or 2 good songs, nothing special. Michelle don’t put your adress here that was really stupid. Kevin is hott!!;) That’s all I gots to say!

Jesse | 7/2/2009, 5:47 pm EST

Oh!! Jonas Brothers can’t sing…no competition.
Kevin Jonas is still hott tho!!

the jonASS bros SUCK ass | 7/3/2009, 12:46 pm EST

OK i dont really know what hanson is but if they can sing any better than my great-great-great-great-great- granny then they’ve got more talent than the jonASS brothers by a million times. i mean really who wants to go see 3 gay guys lipsinking songs they had no part in writing???NOT ME! Personally,(And this is just my opinion) I’d rather date a STRAIGHT guy.

XOXOXOXO ALICIA
OUR FRIENDSHIP IS TIGHTER THAN THEIR PANTS!!!!

April | 7/13/2009, 9:28 am EST

First of all to that JoBros Fan ( 6/29/2009 @ 5:28pm) Hanson has been a band since 1992. Hanson did not copy JoBros. Hanson has been a band for 17 years. They have fans that been fans for 12 years (since 1997) So If you actually read the article you would know that!

Jonas Brothers are only hot right now because of the Disney crap. Disney repeats everything. They are Disney band. Once the Disney kids grow up they will be a fad. The Jonas Brother Merchandise is really rediculas. Pencil Sharpener, Dolls. It’s like they are about a profit more then the music.

Hanson are the real deal. Why people want to compare Hanson to the Jonas brothers are beyond me. WOW they are a brother band. Wow they worked with the same people on music. That shouldn’t even be a compared. Because alot Music people work with other people. That’s how you get different ideas

Has Jonas Brothers had a Number 1 Single. NOPE. According to Billboard Chart they have not had a number 1 single.

Hanson are not cheesy bubblegum pop. They are a real band. If you actually listen to their song instead of Judging them by 1 song or their name you will see they have real talent.

Radio Station Q101 in chicago proved a point.

They played “Great Divide” and it was by a mystery artist. It was the most requested song they had. A week later people were told the Mystery Artist is Hanson.

It’s a Shame that people judge what they like by who sings the song.

I do like some of Jonas Brothers songs. But I will always be a Hanson fan. Because Hanson are Real.

Grandmother | 7/13/2009, 4:10 pm EST

Both bands wrote a song about their dead grandmother – Hanson with “With You In Your Dreams” and Jonas Brothers with “Eternity”. Also, both bands are Christians. Okay, so Hanson didn’t wear purity rings but they wore cross necklaces and they did say they were Christians. Coincidence, huh?

Anonymous | 7/13/2009, 5:50 pm EST

The differences in the two bands far outweigh the similarities. For one, Hanson has worked very hard to be recognized for their music while it seems the Jonas Brothers work very hard….to sell lunch boxes with their face on it. It will be interesting to see if the Jonas Brothers are still together and making new albums in 5 years.

rubyring | 7/13/2009, 10:12 pm EST

Hanson is the real deal. They are in a different league. So the Jonas
marketing giant tried to duplicate greatness, but they fall way short in the musical capabilties of composers like Hanson. It’s pathetic that the machine behind Jonas has to borrow from Hanson who barely plowed their way to fame on sheer talent. You can’t call that a comparison.

Bah | 7/13/2009, 11:04 pm EST

J B suck!

Nicole | 7/14/2009, 12:43 am EST

I would like to say that I am 15 years old and I am a fan of BOTH bands.

I was 3 when MMMBOP came out, and I never ever lost touch with Hanson’s music. Their music is inspirational and classy. They have gone through so much as a band and brothers when forming their own label, and I give them a lot of credit.

Yet, I am a fan of Jonas. Since I do listen to mostly Hanson and other indie-label artists, the Jonas Brothers are the one band my friends and I can dance to and have a good time together. I think their music is great. But most of all I am excited to see what will happen in the future. Maybe I will be going to Jonas shows 12 years down the road from now. Who knows?

In a nutshell, I don’t think that any band would/should “win.” They are to different and the only reason why they are compared is because they are brothers. Music should not be a competition, it should be about escaping to a place where nothing goes wrong. Wheather Hanson, Jonas or any other band does that for you, consider yourself lucky to have artists you look up to and respect in your life.

DeLazz | 7/15/2009, 2:55 pm EST

The JoBros seem like nice kids and all and only time will tell if there is any talent behind the Disney facade, but comparing them with Hanson is like comparing a pick-up basketball game with the NBA. When they’ve made a career span over a decade, had numerous real hits (not number 8), started their own label, and earned the honor of collaborating with real legends…i.e. everyone in the band Tinted Windows…then maybe, just maybe they might deserve a comparision to Hanson, but right now this article is just trifling fluff Rolling Stone put out to attract buzz to their declining site.

photo | 7/16/2009, 1:12 am EST

why did you have to choose a hanson pic of 2004 and a jonas brothers pic of 2009?

what’s the point? both should have been 2009…

Kizzle | 7/16/2009, 1:25 am EST

Hanson has talent. The Jonas twerps have merchandising.

Anonymous | 7/17/2009, 6:03 am EST

come talk to me in 12 years if your still a jonas fan and they are still making music together. until then jonas fans have no credible opinion about how talented Hanson is.

Anonymous | 7/17/2009, 1:37 pm EST

Here is what you screaming tween do not understand. This industry will chew you up and spit you out without batting an eyelash. While the Jonas brothers are the big thing now and are making their company money they won’t be at some point. Another big fad will come around and Jonas will come down to two options. Follow the company’s rules and sell out to compete with whatever the new fad is or decide they want to do their music their way. That is were the true test of talent comes in. If they have no talent they will sell out or fade away.
Hanson has never bought into fads and cheesy merchandising tactics. In the end they they decided not to follow corporates rules and did their music their way. Their fans have stuck behind them for 12 years through the good, the bad, and the ugly. They have proved they have the talented to be respected by real musicians and stand on their own two feet.
That is talent

Disney | 7/17/2009, 4:50 pm EST

Hanson was fooling around on the rock boat and started singing Under The Sea. Check it out on You Tube. There’s one other similarity between the two bands – they both have a Disney cover from Little Mermaid! (JB did Poor Unfortunate Souls, and JB’s wasn’t a joke. It was real.)

Erin | 7/19/2009, 2:46 pm EST

I don’t understand why the JB are always plastered all over RS, like it is a teen magazine. However, I don’t think that Hanson ever made the cover, and they were bigger than the JB at one time. It’s time to put Hanson on the cover, not because they are insanely popular. They should be put on the cover for being about music, which RS should be all about. It should be about the passion of music. Have them talk about what it’s like to run your own label and their amazing charity work.

anonymous | 7/20/2009, 10:51 am EST

the only way to judge a band is over time.

everyone said Hanson was the next big thing and just a trend but they have carved out a career for themselves. Maybe these Jonas boys whoever they are can do the same thing.

but I don’t think that just because u’re brothers means your band will go down the same road, so essentially this is a waste of an article and I am wasting my time.

RS talk about the music. Hanson’s or anyone’s just keep it about the music.

Jessica | 7/21/2009, 1:51 pm EST

Hanson hangs with rockers new and old so their respected. Jonas Brothers don’t, which is why they suck and deserve no respect.

To Jessica | 7/24/2009, 11:45 pm EST

You suck, Jessica, and deserve no respect. Please use more mature language otherwise you prove nothing.

#1 JB Fan | 7/26/2009, 12:13 am EST

First of all…to all of you people calling the jonas brothers bad, if they were so bad then why did they climb up to this amount of popularity in just a few short years when hanson struggled just to keep sales up huh!? if you think they “copied” or “reused” hanson songs, dont. They are amazing song writers, especially nick. and another thing, in this world, most music is hip hop songs about kissing and touching people. i love the jonas brothers because they became popular and they are three christian brothers who wear PURITY RINGS! for gods sake will you give them a break, they are ahmazing musicians, actors, and people! you people are just upset because hanson isnt known to 95% of the population anymore. Face it they are declining on the popularity scale. The jonas brothers are going to be like the rolling stones, and i’ll bet you that i will be 65 and i will still be going to concert because the jonas brothers have PURE TALENT and i know that they will be around for A LONG TIME. oh and one more thing, if you think that they cant sing, please listen to a) fly with me b) Black keys c) a little bit longer d)hello beautiful or e)what i do to your heart and you will most definetley see that they are truly superb singers, especially nick. and having gone to one of their concerts, i know that they can sing for reals, and play their instruments too. so dont go critizing things if you dont even know them at all!

Eloise | 7/27/2009, 10:04 am EST

For “#1 JB fan”: the reason the Jonas Bros sell so much is that they have the mammoth force of the Disney Corporation behind them. Hanson are indie artists; they have nobody but themselves pushing for them. The JB’s one non-Disney album sold fewer than 10,000 copies. Hanson’s first independent album sold 125,000 copies.

Tarryn | 8/2/2009, 4:50 am EST

Wow, this article is a massive stretch. Please, the two bands don’t sound much alike at all, if they weren’t both bands of brothers you wouldn’t even be comparing them! Want to throw the Jackson Five in there, too? Sorry, but it’s a little lame in my opinion.

HansonRuleJoBrosDrool | 8/3/2009, 3:40 am EST

Thank you Eloise what you said was so true. I can’t fathom how the Jonas Brothers got to be featured on the cover of Rolling Stone when Hanson, may I add sold more records in the one year following the release of their first album, than the Jonas Brothers have to date. Either there’s a JB fan on the Rolling Stone staff or this magazine has just lowered its standards. Congratulations Jonas Brothers! Hope you enjoy being Disney’s bitches while it lasts.

“Disney’s Bitches,” love it!!!! So true. Let me just say that until Bono calls the Jonas Brothers’ music “genius” as he has Hanson’s, there really is no comparison between the two bands. But don’t take it from me: ” I admire Hanson. ‘MmmBop’ is one of my favorite songs of all time. They’re an amazing band,” said Bono in an interview with CD UK. But to put things in perspective: Hanson went 4X Platinum in the US alone (Canada 4X and Australia 5X) for their first studio album and even their Christmas album went platinum, and their second studio album went Gold. The Jonas Brothers’ barely went Platinum, on both of their top selling albums in only the US and Mexico. Their sales are declining and it’s pretty clear that their career as a band is nearing an end. Now that the oldest one is getting married, it’s only a matter of time until Disney drops them. I mean it’s not going to look so great on Disney’s part when off goes the purity ring and in comes the wedding ring if you catch my drift. Cosumation is bad representation…for Disney that is. I’ll just leave it at that!

“The JB’s one non-Disney album sold fewer than 10,000 copies.”

Actually, it sold about 60,000 copies. I mean, it’s not equal to Hanson’s first independent release (well, if that really is the right amount and you aren’t just bullshitting it like you did with the Jonas Brothers), but it’s not that pitiful.

Interesting article.

Caitlin | 8/14/2009, 11:13 am EST

okay i love hanson so im not gonna sit here and attack them.

but people to need think before they speak….seriously.

jb hasnt sold as many albums as hanson because they havent been around as long duh.

unlike hannah montana, jb is NOT a product of disney…they are only affiliates.

if you think they only make “cheesy bubblegum pop”, take a listen to their album “lines, vines, and trying times.” you’ll find country, rap, acoustic, and rock. and contrary to popular belief, THEY WRITE ALL THEIR OWN SONGS! especially nick-all he does is write songs!

and if no one likes the jonas brothers, how have they been on the cover of rolling stone 3 times in one year??

and news flash THEY BOTH LOST THE GRAMMY FOR BEST NEW ARTIST! and you dont see hanson hating on the jonas brothers so i dont understand why their fans have to.

ody | 8/25/2009, 4:24 pm EST

Um i just have a couple things to say….first and foremost i am a huuuge jonas brothers fan….but i don’t want to seem biased, and this will probably be one of the most unbiased comment i have made. honestly to all those people who are talking trash about the jonas brothers and how they will never be as great as other rock n roll bands or that they “suck” would you honestly be saying that if they worked for disney??? i didn’t think so….everytime you think jonas brothers you think oh some bubblegum pop band from disney. well they are much more than that, if they were bubblegum pop they wouldn’t even write their own songs, they are musicians, they write their own songs they play instruments and most importantly they don’t lip sing huh? didn’t think of that right? they are truly amazing guys, and while i have not had the great oppurtunity on meeting them i’m sure they are just as amazing as they appear to be. and if in one near future disney decides to kick them out…. the heck with it they are opening their own record company so i don’t think they won’t have much trouble with it. So thank you for reading this oh and just for the heck of it…………..JONAS BROTHERS ROCK

About Rolling Stone even posting something like this instead of a different question like, “Who’s more influential? Joy Division or Nick Drake?”, I’m not going to judge. I will say that magazines are all fighting for their lives right now.

Retailers used to only demand that a magazine sold 25% to remain on the shelves, now they have to sell over 50% to keep their spots.

The Jonas Brothers are a more profitable brand than Joy Division or Nick Drake right now. It’s either bite their lips, or downsize to a niche magazine like Paste and put more of their staff out on the streets in a rough economy. Some say good riddance since there are many other fantastic alternatives for music and political news, and there are also those who hope there will be another golden-age for the magazine in the future.

On the topic of the article, I want to remind us that Hanson were very commercialized when they first started. I distinctly remember seeing their faces on my box of Eggo waffles for a time. Ah yes, there once was a time when Hanson notebooks, necklaces, calenders, and even skateboards were flying off the shelves. They were featured on a Pepsi can too.

The main similarity to me (besides the 3-brothers factor) is that they both were/are kids who exploded into celebrity, wealth, and power at very young ages. When a record label, management team, merchandising company, touring crew, etc. are all depending on a few teenagers to supply the money to feed all those employees’ families, there’s going to be hell if one of the teenagers doesn’t feel like performing some night or wants to take a 3 year break between albums. One person usually has a hard enough time with the responsibility of supporting his/her own family, let alone many many families as a teenager.

SO, my opinion is that the victor right now is Hanson because they’ve passed the point of being in danger of having break downs and becoming crack addicts arrested for domestic abuse at the ripe age of 23 years old. However, the Jonas Brothers still have some flames to jump before they can safely say they didn’t get burned. The music factor is irrelevant.

Sincerely,
-Someone who has obviously spent too much time in college.

Okay, I never heard of Hanson until the Jonas Brothers song “That’s Just the Way We Roll” and I can honestly say I don’t think I would ever if it weren’t for the Jonas Brothers. And so I don’t think that you can say “Hanson is so much more popular than the Jonas Brothers!” Because that is anything but true. It’s a matter of who you know, and who you listen to. I can’t tell you one song Hanson made, but I can tell you all the Jonas Brothers songs. Don’t get me wrong, I am not dissing Hanson at all. I just don’t know them. Personally, I believe that I will always be a Jonas Brothers fan… In fact, I know it because I have been to the year 3000. That’s all! Hey, I’m just want to keep it real! :D

Carol | 9/15/2009, 9:24 pm EST

hanson is actually talented. nobody knows hanson’s songs, because the aren’t really on the radio. if you haven’t noticed, no one on the radio has any talent. hanson last dominated the radio around 1998, when most of the jonas brothers’ fans were being born. hanson wrote grammy-winning “mmmbop” when the youngest was 6. and the 2007 album “the walk” has musical qualities that are in the jonas brothers’ wildest dreams. it really bothers me when people think that hanson is “gone”. maybe some people are okay with listening to the shallow junk on the radio and don’t search for good music, but i’ll take hanson anyday.

Carol | 9/15/2009, 9:29 pm EST

oh whoops, grammy nominated. haha. that’s actually a really big mistake lol

Disney is trying to re create the fame Hanson has and has had, it’s lame!

Anonymous | 10/11/2009, 4:22 pm EST

to everyone who things that hanson is coppying the jonas brothers has really lost their minds. hanson is older and a lot more talented. how is it possible for a band that came out in the 90s to be coppying a band that came out almost 10 years later? really how old are you people? jb will never be as talented as hanson and that final. im not saying that i hate jb, they are good for disney but then yet disney does seem to pick really crapy people for music. they put their people EVERYWHERE!!!! im sick and tired of them. i dont think that jb will stay popular for much longer. not many disney people do. hanson was smart to refuse a tv show and do music that wasnt them. they all write their onw songs and all of them sing lead on at least one song per cd. ive never heard kevin jonas sing lead. hasnon > jb. nuf said.

Lisa | 10/14/2009, 11:50 pm EST

I saw the Hanson brothers live in concert in 1997 in Kansas City, Missouri and they were really talented. I’ve heard the Jonas Brothers songs also. But as far as the real talent, I would say Hanson by far is more talented. Both groups
are popular in their on respects, but Hansons songs are more “deep” and more meaningful and ear catching to listen too. They also
write and sing their own material.
Hanson is BEST YET by a long shot.

sarah | 10/30/2009, 2:48 am EST

so i saw hanson in concert.. last night in Atlanta. it’s amazing to me how EXACTLY (and I mean exactly) like their record they sound. Their new music has a purpose and it’s not silly love songs like the jonas brothers, which ok might be appropriate for their age and their youth. Its hard for me to come across a band that sounds so good live, and hanson really achieves that. i’ve always been a hanson fan, and they’ve been around so long and keep reinventing themselves with great music. if hanson wasn’t great and talented, they wouldn’t be on tour right now. also, other band member greats like the guy from smashing pumpkins and fountains of wayne wouldn’t team with taylor hanson in a new band if he wasn’t amazing… which he is.

desconosido | 11/14/2009, 2:46 pm EST

jonas brothers es un grupo muy bueno pero como van a comparar con hanson. Es un grupo q tiene mas experiencia en la musica.. no se dan cuenta
