A little more than a year ago, Jimmy Page, The Edge and Jack White spent two days on an L.A. soundstage, talking and jamming. The reason: they were filming an epic scene for the new guitar documentary It Might Get Loud, a film directed by An Inconvenient Truth’s Davis Guggenheim that examines the three musicians from three generations’ relationship to the six-string. Rolling Stone first reported on the movie when it premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in the fall of 2008. On Friday, it finally got its U.S. debut in Los Angeles, and RS was there to talk with Page and White about making the film, whether there will be a soundtrack, and why they have to play so damn loud, anyway. “I need to feel it,” White tells us. “[Our valve amplifiers] start to really glow and glow, and they might even explode. That’s when it’s starting to get good,” Page adds. Read the full story here:

Are you kidding me? Jack White? Guitar god? Please . . .

Bman | 6/23/2009, 10:35 am EST

I’ll second that… Jack White – whatever.

Black Frank | 6/23/2009, 11:24 am EST

I think a lot of people don’t get the idea of what this doc is about. It is about three different guitarist from three different era with three different styles. This is not about the three greatest players of all time or whatever people want to argue about. Chill out and enjoy what promises to be an eye opening experience about the art of guitar playing. I personally love all three guitarists.

Black Frank . . . well put. Guitar god conjures up different meanings/players for everyone. I can’t wait to check this out. The previews are awesome!

artifcialred | 6/23/2009, 4:25 pm EST

Why do you dis Jack White. He is a fucking awesome guitarist. He is not afraid to hit a wrong note every now and then. It keeps it organic. I guess some people have a problem with that? Also, Jimmy Page is GOD

Was at the premier it at TIFF last sept. Their is a lot to be learned in this movie for any fan of the guitar. As for the Jack White comments the most startling aspect to the movie for me was how Jack White really is a god. While Jack can play anything that involves a string (quite literally) the Edge sheepishly admits at one point that he almost entirely relies on computers and tech while most of his riffs are two notes and a boat load of machinery. Thats like saying Otis Redding is shit while autotuned Kanye is a modern Marvin Gaye. It’s crazy. JACK BELONGS IN THIS DISCUSSION, THE EDGE IS THE FENCE-SITTER HERE IF ANYONE.

Six-string Pete | 6/23/2009, 7:09 pm EST

The Edge and Jimmy Page have truly changed the way people play the guitar.

Jack White hasn’t changed anything. Even the duo thing — other bands were doing that before him. He’s gotten very lucky, but in all honesty I don’t know anybody who can name one or two White Stripes songs.

Six-string Pete | 6/23/2009, 7:32 pm EST

One more thing…If they cut Jack White out of the movie, it’ll be a great film. Maybe they can do a special DVD of just the Edge and Jimmy Page.

swl | 6/23/2009, 10:08 pm EST

Jack White and guitar god in the same sentence. Nice, idiots.

Cj | 6/24/2009, 1:47 am EST

Where is Eddie Van Halen?

Ren | 6/24/2009, 10:42 am EST

The Edge is still the most underrated guitarist out there now.

Jason W | 6/24/2009, 9:45 pm EST

I agree with most everybody here. Jimmy Page and the Edge? Yes, they’re guitar gods. Jack White? Not very good at all. His records are boring. Don’t see what all the fuss is about. Must have good PR behind him.

So two-thirds of the movie are probably worth watching.

I think a hangup people have with The Edge and “Guitar God” is that he is not the lickity split soloist that a Van Halen-lynch-Vai-DiMartini type.He does however, use a delay pedal to GREAT effect. The other day, I heard for the first time in a long time, James Gang’s the Bomber. When the solo came up, it was truly The Edge’s sound being born.

frog leg | 6/25/2009, 10:15 am EST

they need to kick jack white outa there and bring in david gilmour.

sgmsmiles | 6/25/2009, 5:55 pm EST

Bring on Buckethead!!

lil e | 6/26/2009, 12:47 pm EST

I think you mean the edge is one of the most OVERRATTED guitarist out there….why is he so good…he doesn’t do anything but work feedback….I gag everytime I hear him mentioned with the likes of someone like Page. For this generation…I like Jack White…he is carrying the tourch…much better than that talentless…what’s his name….ergh…I even forget his name he is so boring…um…oh yea…John Mayer…ugh what a hack…watching him try to keep up with Clapton on Good Morning America last year was very telling.

Weegie | 6/27/2009, 12:53 am EST

Jack is “Alternative” to most of the mooks posting on here, ie – I’ve never even heard or watched him play. He is one of the top 10 or 12 guitarists of all time. He’s an encyclopedia of the blues. Hey mooks, punch in Jack White Playing Live on youtube, you’ll feel like idiots you ever dissed him ;)

Christian | 6/28/2009, 9:15 pm EST

I understand Page and White as guitar Gods, but Edge is certainly not there yet. I didn’t understand the hype about Jack White till I saw him play the piano and solo on guitar at the same time. Also, for all the uninformed haters listen to Jack’s “Ball and Biscuit” on crank and you’ll get it. Jack’s Overdrive beats Edge’s Delay any day!

Marc | 6/29/2009, 4:52 pm EST

You want guitar gods – put Jeff Beck, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Derek Trucks, Robben Ford and Steve Morse all on the same stage together.

In_ur_face | 6/30/2009, 4:19 am EST

This debate is not abt 3 diff guitarists from 3 diff eras but its abt coining Jack freakin white and The EDGE(blunt) as guitar gods..
They belong to a way diff league to be termed as gods..

davinci72 | 7/21/2009, 11:22 pm EST

Holy Sh*t!!! For anyone to say that Jack White isnt a musical god is f-ing crazy… You people must not have a pulse… Another thing, This movie isnt about the Greatest Guitarists…Its about 3 different styles/eras.

Hail to Jack Black | 7/30/2009, 10:03 am EST

Somebody challedged us to name 3 White Stripes songs: Not only do I own all the CD’s but his other side projects as well… I have loved Jack Black and his eccentric musical genius for a while. I am mostly into Heavy Metal, but make a huge exception for exceptional, creative, organic musicians

TSole | 10/17/2009, 12:22 am EST

How about we stop fighting and go see the flim. I’m going tomorrow night. It is gonna be good, no matter who you like. They are all good at different things. In the clip I saw Jack White was saying he was just hoping to get a free lesson from these two guys. I think that all three of them respect each other and know they can all learn, at least a little something from each other. They are all better than me at the Art of Playing Guitar. We all like music. Can’t we all just get along. P.S. it is not about who is the best… all I know is I love them all. I don’t know The Edge that well and I too have all Jack’s albums and the B-sides. I have a lot of Pages stuff as well.

TSole | 10/17/2009, 12:43 am EST

I know I am late but oh well. I just heard about it last night. And it is just now playing in my small a** town. I feel bleased to have the oppertunity to see all three of them together. I can’t wait.
