Behind the Jonas Brothers Cover: Teen Idols in Rolling Stone

If you are reading this column, I assume that you are a regular reader of this magazine. And I think I know what you are thinking: “The Jonas Brothers again? Give me a #$*!-ing break!” Believe me, I understand. When Rolling Stone featured Suzi Quatro on the cover in 1975, I remember vowing, “I’m never buying this magazine again.” (Click here to see photos of teen idols on the cover of Rolling Stone.)

But let’s put it in perspective. Most of the things you can say about teen pop are true — the prefab hooks, the corporate machine, the screaming girls. But weren’t Buddy Holly and Sam Cooke once teen idols? Not to mention Stevie Wonder? The Beatles? By the time Justin Timberlake brought sexy back, most people could barely remember the name of his old group.

The smart teen idols realize that unless they want to spend their lives as a punch line — or playing Kenickie in Grease on Ice — they’ll need a better exit plan than Celebrity Rehab. There’s no audience more fickle than an arena full of shrieking girls. On top of that, it’s a brutal gig. As fast as the ride ends, most of these guys can’t wait for it to be over. Some, like Timberlake — and, we bet, Nick Jonas — have pure talent to fall back on. But most end up barely clinging to the C list.

We always liked how David Cassidy escaped with his dignity intact when he used a 1972 Rolling Stone cover story to blow up his clean-scrubbed image. There he was, naked on the cover. The story was full of groupies and drugs, and portrayed a tired young man who wanted to be left alone. Cassidy’s career as a teen dream was over, just as he wanted it.

The Jonas Brothers don’t seem to be anywhere near that breaking point. But here’s the deal we’re offering: If any of you guys start to feel hemmed in and want to talk about what really goes on in the dressing room, give us a call.

GROSS!
You’re really testing my loyalty Rolling Stone

I’ll be sure to hand this issue over to my nieces

swl | 6/23/2009, 10:23 pm EST

Here’s what really goes on in the dressing rooma, Will. Looking in the mirror, popping pimples (because they’re not manly enough to have zits), and discussing how it can be that they’re making (Disney) a fortune without the slightest shred of talent. Oh, and let’s not forget the girlish giggling.

swl | 6/23/2009, 10:27 pm EST

By the way, I’m deleting Rolling Stone from my homepage. Good God guys, you used to write about real music.

Sanchez | 6/23/2009, 10:54 pm EST

I finally *get* the smaller sized magazine format, RS can finally *fit* in the newstand amongst the other like minded junk…

tgi101 | 6/23/2009, 11:37 pm EST

IM DONE!!!

Everrett Harrison | 6/24/2009, 1:35 am EST

No one cares

Jack | 6/24/2009, 1:57 am EST

Quit it with the jonas Brothers!

Can we please still enjoy Petty, Springsteen, and for God’s sake Bob Dylan while they’re still alive and performing? Christ, Rolling Stone, what happened?

Anonymous | 6/24/2009, 2:29 am EST

Hm, I don’t get the hate on these jonas boys.
They seem like decent kids. One of their songs came out on the radio today and it was decent.

Many of you guys act as if they were some pathetic band like Fall Out Boy.

Don’t get the hate

Jere | 6/24/2009, 9:04 am EST

My issue with the cover is that in big, bold letters it says “BOYS to MEN,” but God, that cover looks like a bunch of teenage boys playing dress-up with their father’s clothes from his days as a teenage boy.

I cut RS and the Jonases slack because, after all, RS has always been a pop-culture mag and pop music itself is fairly harmless, but c’mon. The one in the middle has that horrible “Wow! My first mustache!” look.

GoldMonkeyNixon | 6/24/2009, 9:35 am EST

Behold, the three most punchable faces in the world!

Anonymous | 6/24/2009, 10:10 am EST

Dont hate on the jomas brothers im sure half of you cant do what they do on a daily baisis and they can sign they totally deserve to be on the cover again you people have to listen to what people are listening to NOW IN THE YEAR 2009 not those old people who used to have a voice but know sound like crap except for stevie wonder and a few others god damn and rolling stone you have one girl who will defenitly buy that magazine

Poncho | 6/24/2009, 10:47 am EST

A Soundgarden reunion rumor in the works and we’re staring at this shit.

Keep up the good work RS, more info on who thy’re dating would be even more cutting edge.

Schultz | 6/24/2009, 11:14 am EST

I sure am glad my RS subscription was free because I would cancel were I paying for this shit!

I thought Tiger Beat was a different publication.

Kevin the Robot | 6/24/2009, 11:54 am EST

I guess Book Stores are going to take Rolling Stone out of the Music section of the magazine rack and stick it in the teen fad section right next to Tiger Beat.

Benwil | 6/24/2009, 11:55 am EST

They look like they haven’t got a clue what they’re doing. Those poor brain-washed fools!

Anonymous | 6/24/2009, 11:55 am EST

It is offensive to put the name of Aerosmith on a cover with the Jonas Brother’s picture. It should be a federal crime.

Disapointed | 6/24/2009, 11:57 am EST

$$$
Hope you guys make all the money in the world for this issue. It would be nice to highlight some other hardworking band or artist in your music mag. Just know it sucks for your faithful readers to see this over and over. But for you, it’s all about the money and the quick sell.
And it’s sickening.
$$$

Brian | 6/24/2009, 12:31 pm EST

Ha

Reality Check | 6/24/2009, 12:36 pm EST

Are the Jonas Bros. playing music? Do they have the number one album in the US? The JoBros do not show up on my music radar, but there are plenty of music buyers out there that they do. Either cancel your subscription out of a heat of the moment knee-jerk reaction or deal with it.

St | 6/24/2009, 12:37 pm EST

The key point you miss is that those other examples of teen idols you give were making outstanding music at the time, particularly buddy Holly. And while the Beatles may have improved, their early sides were no slouch.

The Jonas brothers on the other hand have no redeeming musical value.

JD | 6/24/2009, 12:45 pm EST

Put it to you this way. I’d rather see the Jonas on the cover than some untalented, auto-tune using, second rate flavor of the month rapper or r&b soloist. I enjoy all the old folks like Dylan and Springsteen, but for all you long time readers, there is more to RS than these guys. Unfortunately, this includes awful emo bands and Nickelback and all their clones. These are better reasons to cancel a subscription.

Opinion | 6/24/2009, 12:49 pm EST

In your opinion, ST. Hundreds of thousands of other music buyers think otherwise.

Punky Punk | 6/24/2009, 12:53 pm EST

I could not care any less about the Jonas Brothers but boy, are a lot of people jealous that they are successful.

Anonymous | 6/24/2009, 1:08 pm EST

There isn’t nothing wrong with the Jonas Brothers. If i’m not mistaken, wasn’t the last issue they were on, the most sold issue of RS? :)

CrystalSpyder4 | 6/24/2009, 1:26 pm EST

Many posters on this forum are missing the essential points when they see the numerous complaints about the overabundance of teen pop on the RS covers.

I personally do not have any major issue with the Jonas Brothers. They’re simply the current example of teen idols that maintain a ubiquitous presence in the pop culture/kiddie pop world. They are nothing unusual. We’ve seen it all before. Most likely, they’ll be forgotten tomorrow, or at least no longer pushed down everyone’s throats. On the other hand, they do play their own instruments, and perhaps they’ll be the next example of an act that transcends their beginnings. You never know. That’s also not the point.

Many people on these forums see complaints, and immediately assume it’s another blog battle, and it turns into a “they suck, you suck” dialogue. This is irrelevant…and immature.

The problems really have to deal more with the fact that RS seems to be neglecting its identity and audience by repeatedly featuring acts like this, while disregarding others. It’s getting to the point where we can sooner expect Britney Spears, Gossip Girls, etc. to show up than buzz bands, or artists with critically acclaimed albums. Animal Collective and the Mars Volta may be featured inside, but they’re not going to make the cover anytime soon. Ditto for many veteran bands.

As mentioned in the article, RS has had teen idols on the cover even in their glory days. That’s absolutely fine…once in a while. It does give the magazine diversity. It no longer represents diversity when it’s the rule more than the exception. RS used to have a lot more variety (and come to think of it, far more interesting covers: a close-up pic against a white background doesn’t quite compare to the innovative visions of Annie Liebovitz).

Of course, it’s also a moot point to compare many of the current overprocessed pop/r&b/hip-hop acts (or even last generation’s boy bands, divas, etc.) to past examples you cite such as Buddy Holly and Sam Cooke. We’re not quite operating in the same celestial sphere of talent, now, are we?

amy | 6/24/2009, 1:54 pm EST

THE JONAS BROTHERS HAVE THE NUMBER ONE ALBUM IN AMERICA RIGHT NOW AND OTHER COUNTRIES AS WELL. THEY ARE GREAT ROLE MODELS AND JUDGING FROM INTERVIEWS THEY SEEM LIKE DOWN TO EARTH GUYS. THE ONLY REASON WHY PEOPLE HATE THEM IS BECAUSE THEY ARE JEALOUS OF THEIR FAME AND FORTUNE AND HAVE NO LIVES. AND YES I KNOW I’M RIGHTING IN ALL CAPS RIGHT NOW BECAUSE IF I WAS TALKING TO THE HATERS IN PERSON I WOULD BE YELLING AT THEM RIGHT NOW!!!

Beaah | 6/24/2009, 2:29 pm EST

Uoool! OMG.. *-*

GG | 6/24/2009, 2:45 pm EST

SERIOUSLY…WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH THIS MAGAZINE???

Brian | 6/24/2009, 2:54 pm EST

Amy, if you were in the room screaming at people, would your words be misspelled? Just wondering.

johnny guy | 6/24/2009, 2:55 pm EST

Hanson wipes the floor with these jokers.

Revolver | 6/24/2009, 3:00 pm EST

Fuck off Rolling Stone! Quit trying to cover your asses!

The Jonas Brothers are nothing like Buddy Holly, Sam Cooke, Stevie Wonder, or The Beatles

And if you believe they are, then you are fucking delusional

I hope you enjoy teenage virgin girls, with their purity rings and shit…because that’s going to be your only audience before you know it

Lanna | 6/24/2009, 3:07 pm EST

Didn’t you use the title Boys to Men for the cover of RS with the Backstreet Boys on it? Can’t you think of anything more creative? Jonas Bros are just Hanson rehashed. And although the Backstreet Boys are “only” a vocal harmony group like the Temptations and don’t routinely write their own music or play instruments-I suspect there is more multigenerational memory of I Want It That Way and Show Me The Meaning of Being Lonely than to ANY song of JoBros. If fact, now that I mention it–I couldn’t tell you ANY song they sing–they simply haven’t created yet anything of pop history other than themselves. I guess time will tell.

Dave D | 6/24/2009, 3:26 pm EST

So bad! It’s articles like this that make me want drive my car into a herd of cattle. Who’s riding shotgun.

Enough with the Disney stuff

glenn | 6/24/2009, 5:35 pm EST

I swear, it’s as if Rolling Stone dies a little more with every issue…

And something else I’d like to point out…sure, the Beatles, Buddy Holly, Sam Cooke, and Stevie Wonder were all teen idols at one point, but the fact that they were all musical trailblazers effectively nullifies that. (not much of a Justin Timberlake fan, sorry…)

Liz | 6/24/2009, 6:45 pm EST

Whine, whine, whine, you old (and young) coots.

I love the Jonas Brothers; I am an adult.

They work their asses off – harder than most,I’d bet. There are plenty of “rock” acts that are bigger poseurs.

And the Jonases are really good!

They deserve fundamental respect at least for that, and that they are real musicians – not dancers lipsyncing to playback – even if they have something to learn.

I can’t imagine any of you knows much about them beyond their marketing overexposure and what you think their fans look like. A lot of us are not young, clueless, or naive about music. We are real music lovers and we deserve to read about our favorites in RS, too.

Try harder to *get* it,or just leave stories about them alone!

Liz | 6/24/2009, 6:52 pm EST

Furthermore…these “faithful readers” are a pack of slobbering idiots. No wonder Rolling Stone wants to get rid of you. I’ll subscribe, RS…I’m as happy to see a story on the Jonas Brothers as I would to see something on Phoenix, Kanye, Wilco, Ne-Yo, Springsteen or Dylan, whoever.

Sigh…Guess we can’t all be blessed with tunnelvision.

Pooch | 6/24/2009, 7:57 pm EST

Not only did the Internet ruin the music industry, but it took it’s journalism with it.
There was a time when not only ruffling through RS meant you were on top of something, now you’ve joined a tragic follower of yesterdays news and tomorrows fad.

Wow. Seriously. Wow. | 6/24/2009, 11:07 pm EST

I find it fascinating how most of the people dissing the Jonas Brothers haven’t even heard any of their stuff. Or have and were already too biased to listen to it from a totally unbiased observational point of view.

As previously stated, not all of the fans are teeny-boppers. I’m over the age of 20 and I happen to enjoy their music.
They do actually have talent.
They write their own songs, they play their own instruments, and 2 out of the three have been on Broadway.

Anyone on here complaining about how stupid it is that they’re on the cover needs to know both sides of the story before claiming theirs.

The Jonas Brothers just released a new album which was released at #1 on the Billboard Top 200. And that’s their second album to do that in less than a year.

And they couldn’t do that on teeny-bopper support alone. Trust me.

Also, to the person who said the cover looks like teenagers dressed up in their dad’s clothes, um… the oldest (Kevin) is turning 22 in a few months, and the middle one (Joe) is turning 20.

If you want to curse them out and say how stupid RS is getting, find out what you’re talking about first.

glenn | 6/25/2009, 12:02 am EST

Okay. After a while reading the comments on this topic and the Jonas Brothers cover topic, I think I should add to my earlier comment:

The Jonases seem like nice people. I mean, their father is a minister so they have good morals. They don’t treat their fans like shit. But, from a strictly musical standpoint, I don’t think they deserve being on a RS cover. Unless they abandon Disney, grow up and really commit to music in the sense that the Beatles and the other acts mentioned above have, they shouldn’t be taken seriously. After all, the Beatles spent years playing clubs before they came to prominence, something the Jonas Brothers never went through. Now, can we please talk about something worthwhile already? This is giving me a headache.

Sarah | 6/25/2009, 2:50 am EST

Wow.

Some of these people need to grow up.

Yeah so I’m a 14 year old girl, but I can see that I’m more mature than most adults.

The Jonas Brothers are so talented and most of the people whining like 2 year olds don’t know what they’re missing.

They work so hard. They deserve their fan base. (Which by the way is more than people under 13.)

And so what if they wear purity rings? They could have almost any girl they wanted, but they aren’t sleeping with every girl in the country. That’s a bad thing? They are amazing role models.

Grow up.

jonas_g@L | 6/25/2009, 5:27 am EST

i just am d big fan of dem… how i wish i cud meet dem ….!!!!

p!$$ed 0ff | 6/25/2009, 2:23 pm EST

The Jonas Brothers music is pure corporate trash. Next year they’ll make millions touring and release another worthless album, and Rolling Stone magazine will deem it news fit to print. What a JOKE.

Alexx | 6/25/2009, 3:09 pm EST

Okay Glenn,
why don’t you read up on your facts before you put it out there and look like an ass. Yeah The Jonas Brothers have not been around for a long time but those boys have put in their dues to the entertainment industry, both Nick and Joe have done their fair share of Broadway shows as kids, from Beauty and the Beast to Les Misérables and La bohème and Kevin did commercials. Nick had a failed record when he was 6 years old, they were kicked off their label after their first album flopped, they played in small little venues and for middle and high schools where they were booed off stage. They became The Jonas Brothers back when nick was like 11 so almost six years now and we have only heard about them for really two years, they have worked their asses off to get to where they are now and they deserve everything they have because they call the shots and they write the song and they say what goes into the tour, they don’t have some Disney person telling them what to do, they design everything themselves and Nick is a big part of the fight for Diabetes.

so get it straight before you dog someone for no reason.

Yah yah yah | 6/25/2009, 3:21 pm EST

Why not be honest and say that rolling stone just needs to sell issues, instead of trying to compare these guys to buddy holly and stevie wonder? Look, you guys have more cred than say, tiger beat, but after reading this I’ve realized that maybe those darn blogs are better sources for music news (at least because they’re less confused), and that saddens me.

Yes | 6/25/2009, 6:30 pm EST

Yes we have heard them. I can’t believe how horrible their music is. Its soooo bad… This is a TRUE embarrassment to Rolling Stone.

okplease | 6/25/2009, 6:34 pm EST

Its like Rolling Stone (who is supposed to cover music) doesnt realize there are great bands out there.. and instead try to find the worst pop bands imaginable and write stories about them. This is beyond horrible, this is a disgrace. Yes they are good guys, but that doesnt help their music. If youre not 15 and your not a mom who takes your kids to see them, and you have respect for real music, you know how bad their music is… they are not in anyway early Beatles or Wonder, etc… Embarrassing Rolling Stone… hahaha!!!

okplease | 6/25/2009, 6:39 pm EST

Have you ever seen a real band rolling stone? are the people who pick your covers even into music? Have you ever seen Sigur Ros? Have you ever seen the Arcade Fire? Arctic Monkeys? BRMC? What in the world.
FIRE SOMEONE AT ROLLING STONE. You are a laughing stock to everyone who is actually interested in real music.

denzepp58 | 6/25/2009, 8:09 pm EST

REvolver, kudos for getting the F-word past the word police at RS…How come everyone else can post Fuck and shit and sucks but when I do it my posts magically disappear???Whats up with that???

respectfulboy111 | 6/26/2009, 9:29 am EST

look at that hat they look like wannabe greaser douches

Rolling Stone?? | 6/26/2009, 3:42 pm EST

OK, I’m gonna try to be as reasonable as I can. I understand why the Jonas Brothers have been put on RS, as they are the most popular force in music. I can’t say that they don’t have talent, as they do write and play their own songs, but still…something is sort of wrong about this.

The fact that they are in RS twice in a 10-month span just doesn’t sit quite right with me. (At least when Green Day had done the same thing they had made the awesome rock opera “American Idiot”, so it was more than deserved.) I mean, I’m sure they’re very nice people, but they haven’t really done anything for music.

It just bothers me that they try to be wannabe rock stars when they’re further from the truth. Rock ‘n Roll is about going against society’s assumptions, not joining the corporation. (And it kind off bothers me when teenyboppers say – parents are excluded because I understand why they say this – that it’s good rnr because there are no sex and drugs in the lyrics. News flash: this is pretty much why rnr was invented; to say what other genres of music couldn’t.) It’s just that they’re sort of ruining the image of rnr: the likes of the Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Who, Green Day, Bob Dylan, who all contributed something to the music. Now, I’m not a music purist: I have my guilty pleasure music (Disney, really bad pop, etc.), but I can’t even find guilty pleasure in listening to them. (I will admit they have one good song that I listen to: Lovebug.) For now, I’m just content to listen to “21st Century Breakdown” for the 50th time, and loving it every minute of the way…

colleen | 6/26/2009, 11:57 pm EST

All I will say is this:

Preconceived notions can sometimes get in the way of a true and valid opinion. People assume the Jonas Brothers are just another boy band with mediocre music, but they can’t be the true judge of talent or their music. If you don’t go into something with an open mind what do you expect? The Jonas Brothers are phenomenal artists and a superb band. Their music is not crap as some people suggest. They are talented and deserve all the credit they are given as well as this RS cover.

Kelss | 7/9/2009, 9:32 am EST

Why is everyone acting like this is such a big deal? Most people are saying “Put some real bands in here that have good music..” but music tastes are varied! I can see why RS are putting Jonas Brothers in there too… Its too attract more readers. I’m a Jonas Brothers Fan but I also like music like Green Day, Paramore, Linkin Park..etc.. Good on RS for making the Jonas Brothers more famous.. They deserve it just like anyone else!!

Ok, to add to my other comment.. Don’t stop reading the magazine because the Jonas Brothers are in it… Its one sodding article… It’s not like they are taking up the whole magazine, theres still going to be other stuff in it.

Whoever said it was only virgin girls that like the Jonas Brothers you can get stuffed… They are icons to young girls who, unlike many rockstar bands, show that girls don’t have to go around screwing boys to get attention. Jonas Brothers show that girls can have confidence and respect themselves which gives them a better reputation. Girls love them for that reason, but they know how to respect a girl.

Another point, Their music is amazing. It hasn’t got swearing in it, or anything about sex, it’s generally nice. They work hard for what they have achieved!

So carry on slagging them off like childish scum if you want but maybe this is what the magazine needs.. A DECENT ROLE MODEL!!!

shane | 7/15/2009, 5:19 am EST

Myself, and many other ADULTS are laughing at the people that think this band is not just a fad.Wake up!
they are sponsored by Disney for gods sake. I can see preteens falling into
their web of purity bullshit. congrats for bringing a whole generations intellect down….dumb ass.

mrs nick jonas x | 8/18/2009, 4:45 pm EST

u no what? i really love the jonas brothers and they have worked soooooo hard to get where they are today and they totally deserve their fame. they are all amazing role models for teens and nick is fighting hard for type one diabetes which im sure is not something that you guys can say. they have been trying to make it for years and now that they have got there they dont need people like you bringing them down. they are amazing musicians and lets not forget that britney spears and justin timberlake both started out with disney too. so get ur facts right b4 u diss them on the internet.

Lindsey | 8/27/2009, 6:42 pm EST

I don’t see why so many people are offended with the fact the Jonas Brothers have been on the cover twice. They are extrememly talented and are awesome role models. i say good choice rollingstone, put em’ on the cover again.
