Phish Bust Out Rarities, Kids for Unique Father’s Day Gig

Fresh off two headlining performances at Bonnaroo last weekend, Phish brought the first half of their first tour in five years to a dynamic end last night at Wisconsin’s Alpine Valley Music Theater. The band took the stage with some special guests — their seven children — before opening with their first rendition of “Brother,” a Middle-Eastern-influenced jam that hadn’t seen the light of day since 2003.

In a fitting Father’s Day tribute that borrowed a joke from a 1992 version where family, friends, and crew members jumped around in a giant bathtub during the performance, the Vermont foursome’s children sat center-stage in a miniature tub for the song’s nonsensical lyric chant, “Somebody’s jumping in the tub with your brother!”

The rest of the lengthy, fourteen-song set included a cover of Son Seals’ “Funky Bitch,” a new ballad, “Joy,” that will probably appear on the band’s upcoming (and still-untitled) album set for release on July 28th, and the return of “The Man Who Stepped Into Yesterday,” an late-Eighties composition by guitarist Trey Anastasio. Since its first live performance in 1987, “TMWSIY” has always sandwiched the traditional Jewish prayer, “Avenu Malkenu,” before a reprise of the Phish original. The set closed with a 17-minute version of Anastasio’s newest composition, “Time Turns Elastic,” building to an intense crescendo that left fans awestruck by a band that appears to be firing on all cylinders after the embarrassment of an acrimonious “final tour” in 2004.

Not to be outdone, the second set opened with a rare cover of Talking Heads’ “Crosseyed and Painless,” a tune the band famously covered, along with the rest of Talking Heads’ iconic 1980 album, Remain in Light, for a Halloween performance in 1996. Although rampant rumors of a much-anticipated onstage collaboration with David Byrne at Bonnaroo didn’t come to fruition, “phans” in Wisconsin were treated to a funky, 15-minute version that drifted into a spacey ambient jam before segueing nicely into the band’s own “Down With Disease.” Later in the set, another cover, Stevie Wonder’s “Boogie On, Reggae Woman,” brought a thick, danceable groove before a triumphant version of “Slave to the Traffic Light” closed the set.

Saving the best surprise for last, the band returned for an encore that featured a smoking cover of the Edgar Winter Group’s “Frankenstein,” featuring Anastasio on a five-necked guitar, bassist Mike Gordon on a flame-bedecked bass, and keyboardist Page McConnell on a huge keytar that had previously belonged to James Brown.

Phish return to the stage for a sold-out four night run at Colorado’s iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre, beginning July 30th. The second leg will run through mid-August.

June 2004 tour was amazing.

the_GOFF. | 6/22/2009, 2:38 pm EST

nicely written review with some nice phishtory to boot in there. Alas, someone finally mentions the “No Byrne @ Bonnaroo” disappointment. We are all aware Trey’s childhood N.J. hero was The Boss. But it’s fair to say, the majority of Phish Phans there @ The ‘Roo wanted Byrne more than Boss and Crosseyed more than “Mustang Sally’. Great Tour – They def. got hotter as the tour progressed. #1 Knoxville #2 Madison Too #3 Burgettstown #4 Camden

And Coventry was not.

Yawn

Trey needs me to be successful.

Obviously if you are a fan of Phish then you will enjoy just about anything they play and any show you go to, but they are really firing on all cylinders now as compared to their 2003-2004 tours in which the members were immersed in various side projects and drug habits that couldn’t help but distract from the jam band machine that is Phish. Asheville 06/09 really rocked the house.

PW | 6/22/2009, 3:23 pm EST

I saw Knoxville and was disappointed. Still better than 03-04 shows.

Phans4HighTrey | 6/22/2009, 3:54 pm EST

Get back on the dope! We want some real JAMS!

Bill | 6/22/2009, 4:05 pm EST

I have been going to Phish shows since 94. I’ll take this brand over what the band turned into from 98-04. I saw them at Alpine on Saturday and they were as tight as I’ve ever seen them perform. Solos were concise – you could tell Trey is a lot more on his game.

Josh B | 6/22/2009, 5:29 pm EST

This weekend was my first time seeing Phish after being a fan of 7 years, and my first time at Alpine. The whole experience blew me away!

whoops! | 6/22/2009, 6:04 pm EST

redolent of patchouli – not sure if you noticed, but as you were yawning the faint chance of you recognizing anything artistic outside of the radius of your thick head passed you by. Enjoy your time yawning as I dance past…

Suzy Greenburg | 6/22/2009, 11:15 pm EST

went to 3 shows this tour and hampton before that, loved all of them. i thought asheville could have been better but knoxville made up for it. Fenway was a riot, these guy are just better now, mikes bass is blowing the roof off

Pat | 6/23/2009, 12:23 pm EST

First set was phandamntastic. While I enjoyed the second set (especially crosseyed), I started calling the next songs. It reminded me of Deer Creek & Shoreline 2000…not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Sadly, it’s the only show I can afford to see, but the songs are still running strong through my head!

Nelson | 6/23/2009, 1:21 pm EST

Trey is not on drugs, but you are. Ha-ha. The jokes on you! Have fun nit-picking about minor details of Phish shows. Enjoy your drugs…

Phans4soberTrey | 6/23/2009, 1:33 pm EST

If you really think Trey’s playing is better sick and high on dope, you are seriously in need of help. It’s one thing to say his playing is better high (you must be deaf to believe that) and it’s another to support a lethal habit.
Rock on Trey! Keep up the sobriety for yourself and for the music! Alpine was awesome, they would have never had thier kids come on stage back in 04. Things really seam like they have turned around for the boys… and they are back!

John | 6/23/2009, 2:23 pm EST

All of the “Phans” who say that Phish is on top of their game are just newbies and don’t know what the hell they are talking about. Leave the reviews for the real phans who have been following them for 20+ years and save your breath. Billy Breathes is NOT the best album….

It doesn't matter to you | 6/23/2009, 5:40 pm EST

I have been seeing phish since 96 and this tour is on fire. Sat alpine possibly the greatest 2nd set ever. Then you have sunday where we got to here a lot of rare songs that haven’t been played in a long time. The phans were great. I am already going through phish, phamily, and phriends withdrawl. See ya all next phunky time…

Happy Camper | 6/23/2009, 8:37 pm EST

If you want evidence to how much better they sound, listen to the last show they played in 2004. Trey was wasted and screwed up several songs – it was sad. Trey’s recovery is a great story and there would be no Phish tour without it.

with each show this tour... | 6/23/2009, 11:55 pm EST

…they’ve gotten better & better and i hope this trend continues throughout July & August. this tour didn’t produce the greatest Phish shows ever performed but they were a hell of alot better than anything leading up to the train wreck that was Coventry which was my last Phish show prior to Bonnaroo this summer, wish i could’ve seen some more but my life is different now, i can’t drop everything and hit the road anymore like i used to. i’m curious as to why they played so many of the same songs on this tour (Suzy, Wolfmans, YEM, Hood etc), i guess they just wanted to do what was comfortable while they try to tap back into that old energy that was lost come ‘04, fine by me, whatever they have to do to reagin that magic is welcomed by me. also, i for one was thrilled to see The Boss sit in with Phish, it was amazing, besides, Trey & Byrne have performed together in the past anyway…

Mike | 6/24/2009, 4:03 pm EST

Great review, “firing on all cylinders” is how I would describe the band too. Saturday at Alpine was pee your pants coolness. I’m excited their professionalism is back. Drugs and music don’t work unless you are listening, not playing.

Al | 6/24/2009, 5:27 pm EST

Rubbish. No one is saying this is the best phish has ever played. But it IS the best they’ve played since probably 98. This tour has been great so far and it’s nice to see them back in form. And Billy Breathes IS the best phish album. It’s the closest Phish has ever gotten to succeeding in the studio and I’m really excited to see what Steve Lillywhite can get out of them again.

Stay In The Moment! | 6/24/2009, 6:10 pm EST

All I seem to hear now are comparisons of Phish’s performances from this time to that time, with a lot of people citing “I’ve been to X number of shows” or “I saw them way back in 19XX…” as some sort of imagined credential that simultaneously grants them license to criticize the band’s performance and instantly dismiss anyone else’s opinion who has not seen 6,000 shows dating back to 1986.

Instead of looking back, I prefer to enjoy the experience in the moment. It doesn’t really matter if they are better, same, or worse than before, I judge each individual show on one simple criteria, “did I have fun?” So as far as Alpine Valley 2009 is concerned, HELL YEAH! I had a blast, and I’m pretty sure about 37,000 others did as well. For all of you tour vets caught up in analysis I just have one question, “Can you still have fun?”

On a personal note, anyone who criticizes someone for kicking drugs is an absolute dolt and most likely just trolling.

Viboflife720 | 6/24/2009, 7:30 pm EST

Can anyone just sit back, get in a groove and enjoy a Phish show anymore? Who cares if it’s the best ever or the worst ever? If you can’t just dance and enjoy the vibe of the crowd and the band without analyzing every song and jam then stay home and let some of us die hards have the tickets. Oh yeah, and I don’t know anyone including myself who isn’t better off clean and sober so a big pat on the back to all the people who have gone through that struggle and come out better on the other side.

bathtub gin | 6/25/2009, 11:23 am EST

My first for both phish and alpine, both nights were the shit. If you were bored, that sucks. Phish isn’t an untz untz band, go check out Umphrey’s McGee or get over it and start your own band that plays intense nonstop dance music… I’ve listened to the whole tour, the band sounds hot like ‘98. What some would call slow i’d call mature. TMWSIY was sick, a song from Treys youth played with TLC. I’ll take that any day. The more they play the more songs we’ll get. People are cryin about the “radio friendly” show Sat and the “yanwfest” on Sun. I have no idea what they are taking about. I had one of the best times of my life both nights… till i had to leave the parking lot

rutheford99 | 6/25/2009, 2:16 pm EST

I want to be back on tour again, but alas, children and responsibilities get in the way of taking the whole summer off these days. Still a fantastic show and they are definitely on their game! Can’t catch any late summer shows, but I sure hope to see Phall tour dates soon!

Anonymous | 6/25/2009, 2:18 pm EST

noobs always say the show was the shit- JUST BECAUSE THEY WERE THERE-
bathtub gin said it was like 98- please elaborate and include details to support such statements- i see no simillarity to lemonwheel or farmaid performances-
maybe it wasnt a snoozefest but everyone had plenty of oppurtunity for smoking/bathroom breaks

Nipples Magoo | 6/25/2009, 3:18 pm EST

Camden brought the heat this tour but this show was great as well…..All these shows brought the fun back in Phish, something that was missing during the dark heroin years post hiatus in 2002. Now the boys are having fun again and its great!

Nipples Magoo | 6/25/2009, 3:20 pm EST

And let the noobs have their fun. I was a noob 1 time back in 1992 and noobs carry the tradition further.

Nipples Magoo | 6/25/2009, 3:22 pm EST

Byrne denied Playing with Phish before when they played the Sessions show for him for PBS. Byrne has an ego as big as NYC and thats why he won’t get back with Tina and Chris for Talking Heads, He’s a dick and thats all!

Nipples Magoo | 6/25/2009, 3:24 pm EST

Phish is back, they are just heating up and expect them to bring it hard the rest of the year. 2009 has just started for them and Fall tour is going to be even crazier. Expect summer leg 2 to be nutz and Fall tour to be booming with bust outs!

Nipples Magoo | 6/25/2009, 3:25 pm EST

Noobs are lucky to be getting Phish happier then they ever have been. They are re energized, sober and ready to be playing to a whole new generation of fans who love their music. Screw the haters, this is about the music and not you!

t34mhood | 6/25/2009, 9:18 pm EST

all the hate fit to print…. MJ is gone … now the kids can dance on the lawn. heh

mcgrupp | 6/25/2009, 9:26 pm EST

i second dave dobbs by saying:
“June 2004 tour was amazing.”

6/19, 6/24

’nuff said

mcgrupp | 6/25/2009, 9:33 pm EST

i like what i’ve heard from this tour, and i’ll be at shoreline>gorge for sure, but all the hate on 03-04 ignores the music, at times. On this tour, they haven’t played anything close to the level of 8/2/03 Waves Ambient Jam, 12/29/03 (entire show), 6/19/04 set II (ASIHTOS, Piper>Tweeprise, or 6/24/04 Deer Creek Tube.

Still Waiting... | 6/25/2009, 11:24 pm EST

Both of the Alpine shows were solid…without necessarily being out of this world. I actually enjoyed the show on Friday night at Deer Creek the best out of the 3 Chicago area-ish shows. Both set closers (1st set: Fluffhead, 2nd set: Suzie > Possum) were the highlights of the weekend. You Enjoy My Phish is Back!!!!

Nipples Magoo | 6/26/2009, 12:04 am EST

Michael Jackson may be gone but Phish is still around to Rock Our World. Thank God for that!

nomad | 6/26/2009, 12:18 pm EST

June 04 tour was horrible, music was bad, set lists were bad, they couldn’t have ended sooner. But, they are back, and sound great. Favorite years were early 90’s, they killed back then

Ish the Phish | 6/27/2009, 1:53 pm EST

They got sober. I got sober. Alot of us Phans from way back have grown up. They are still the band that I fell in love with back in the early 90’s. They rock and will always rock. If you are not completely satisfied then give up your ticket. I know a lot of Phans that didn’t get tickets. I am sure they would have enjoyed the shows without complaints.

Still In The Moment. | 6/29/2009, 1:50 pm EST

heh heh…I think we ran off the haters. Good Job Phans!

PS: Noobs make the world go around. Without noobs there would eventually be…well nothing.

Col. Forbin | 7/1/2009, 3:52 am EST

i think the only part of ‘04 that was lack-luster would be Coventry for the many obvious reasons. But should you go back and listen, the julius from Alpine ‘04 may stand as my personal favorite Phish moment of all time. And this tour has been building up to it.

Wilson | 7/2/2009, 3:15 am EST

I too have kicked H in the past year and knowing my hero was going through the same thing was really inspiring to me, seeing him finally sobering up. Now we can get back to what really gets us high… the love and the music.

Infranet | 7/4/2009, 1:59 pm EST

Its sad to think that we cant just enjoy a phish show without “analyzing” it. Do you analyze every party you go to? No? then why do you with this party? (Not sure that makes sense but whatevs) – Phish should just eb about whether or not you had fun and the band gave you some entertainment. I have been seeing Phish since 91 and all shows I have seen in 09 will go down as memories I wont forget – not nessecarily which version of which song was a best of all time,,,but each show has its moment and thats all i need to remember or “analyze”
alpacinos bustanut bar…
