Green Day Let the Bullets Fly in Marc Webb’s “21 Guns” Video

6/22/09, 9:00 am EST

Green Day’s video for “21 Guns,” the second single off the band’s acclaimed 21st Century Breakdown, premiered last night on MySpace Music. The video was directed by music video vet Marc Webb, who previously helmed clips for Weezer and My Chemical Romance and will make his feature film debut later this summer with (500) Days of Summer.

Like the “Know Your Enemy” video, “21 Guns” is a performance-heavy clip that has the band — including touring guitarist Jason White — rocking inside a bleak single room where a young couple are barricaded. Newspaper clippings and the lyrics to the song (as well as other Green Day songs, including “See the Light”) cover the walls, and before long bullets riddle the room, smashing glasses and everything else in sight. But the pair suddenly lose their fear and walk proudly to the middle of the room, where they kiss in a scene that echos 21st Century Breakdown’s cover art.

Drummer Tre Cool recently told Spinner the clip does indeed mirror the album art, and he thinks “It’s the perfect video for the song.” What’s more, “There’s a hot girl and a hot guy in it.” Cool said the video was filmed on a two-day shoot and promised a “lot of explosions, good times and gunpowder.”

“21 Guns” will be among the songs on Rock Band’s Breakdown download three-pack along with “Know Your Enemy” and “East Jesus Nowhere.” Fans will able to see “21 Guns” live this summer when Green Day embark on their full tour starting July 3rd in Seattle. first? it was so good!

stevefrehley | 6/22/2009, 9:26 am EST

Up until where the chorus starts, you can sing Heart’s “What About Love” to this song. It popped in my head and now everytime I hear the song, that’s all I think about. Yikes.

RH | 6/22/2009, 10:36 am EST

IMHO, the song starts with an echo of Scott MacKenzie’s ‘San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair’) and the chorus completely rings with Mott the Hoople’s ‘All the Young Dudes’.

RH | 6/22/2009, 10:39 am EST

I do like the song however.

Fozzie Bear | 6/22/2009, 10:52 am EST

Good call, Steve. That song wedged itself in my head when I heard this. This album only proves that Green Day is now firmly inside the box they have created for themselves with the far superior American Idiot.

A perfect demographic 11-19 year old girls.

StrummerJones | 6/22/2009, 4:07 pm EST

Best song on the album. I hope it gets popular.

Mandela | 6/22/2009, 4:12 pm EST

Well, if this gets played non stop on the radio cause teenyboppers kee wanting to hear it, at least I can say to myself “I can handle this, it’s not Blvd. of Broken Dreams”.

StiGuy | 6/22/2009, 4:36 pm EST

Coming from a professional video producer, that was very well made. I am a huge Green Day fan but seriously, who the fuck is that 4th member that always shows up. Did they add an extra guitar player but didnt announce him as an official member of the band? Im confused with this?

Anonymous | 6/22/2009, 4:50 pm EST

Jason White. thats his name. he is their touring guitarist since 1998. just that he decided to be in this video.

Comfort Inn | 6/22/2009, 8:13 pm EST

I believe Jason White was in another Green Day video also, maybe Blvd of Broken Dreams? I believe also they had a 3rd guitarist on SNL with a keyboard player to boot. Cool video though

StiGuy:

Jason White – Lead guitarist of Green Day.

When he joined them for tours in 2000, he was asked if he wanted to be put under the Green Day name. He declined saying he thought the name deserves the original three members only, (Armstrong, Dirnt, and Cool.)

Also, he isn’t ‘popping up everywhere.’ He’s only been in three Green Day music videos:

When I Come Around (1994–As a non-band member.)

Wake Me Up When September Ends (2004)

21 Guns (2009)

Great, it’s a great song and video, Green Day started as a boy band and have transformed incredibly… actually making something of themselves… unlike some boy bands of today…

Green Day started as a boy band? So that is what Gilman was all about. Retard.

Anonymous | 6/22/2009, 11:12 pm EST

Yeah, The Clash were also a boy band.

Wtf?

Anonymous | 6/23/2009, 8:52 am EST

this album, at least everything i have heard from it, firmly confirms GD’s complete sellout to pop rock; absolutely no grit whatsoever
any no-name pop rock band could be playing this song, it just happens to be GD images in the video
reminds me of Def Leopard’s demise into a pop band
sad

Fail | 6/23/2009, 1:17 pm EST

If i’m not mistaken, I think Jason White was also in the Nice Guys Finish Last video

Fail | 6/23/2009, 1:39 pm EST

I may be mistaken

Imp | 6/24/2009, 2:10 am EST

At least Def Leppard kicked ass at first. Greenday was cheese from day one.

sherry | 6/25/2009, 5:44 pm EST

i like green day. I do think music has come to a more intense level in terms of vocals. I think the public is looking for green day to hit us at our core level. They can do it/ they just have to find it and do it.

Rhi | 6/26/2009, 11:09 pm EST

This video was more intense than I thought it would be.
But I still love it.

Con | 6/27/2009, 12:14 am EST

The guitar melody in the middle totally sounds like the Full House theme song! Does Billy Joe know his song is a cover?

M | 6/30/2009, 8:19 am EST

Who the hell really wants to listen to screamers?? Greenday keeps the auwsome rock thing going on but is dtill enjoyable to listen to, some might say that they ahve gone pop but I think they are just becoming more appealing to a younger and larger audience, you can’t blame them though…

MANDI | 6/30/2009, 9:35 am EST

i love this song, and the video. bought and itunes first day available.

Uncle Joey | 7/5/2009, 12:38 am EST

William | 8/5/2009, 10:01 pm EST

Wow! When I first heard it in Transformers, this song turned back the clock for me and reminds me of the good old days hippie song “San Francisco” 1967 by Scott MacKenzie!

Absolutely beautiful days in the 60s…

max loughbrough | 8/11/2009, 4:23 am EST
