Def Leppard Mix Up the Set Lists for Tour With Cheap Trick, Poision

Poison frontman Bret Michaels was forced to reschedule a pair of solo gigs citing “injuries suffered at the Tony Awards June 7,” but according to Def Leppard frontman Joe Elliott, Michaels is still on for the June 23rd launch of Def Lep’s summer tour with Poison and Cheap Trick. “I bet he’s had worse in bars,” he tells Rolling Stone. “We all have, really, at some point in our career. Some irate boyfriend that thinks you looked a bit too hard at the girl in the third row.”

Def Leppard are heading into the tour fresh from their buzz-generating performance with Taylor Swift at last week’s 2009 CMT Music Awards, and Elliott says the band has assembled some career-spanning sets, to keep things fresh for those who’ve seen the group in concert in recent years.

“We’ve got 90 minutes to try and keep every Leppard fan out there happy, because they’ll all get, ‘Oh, they should’ve played this, and they should’ve played that,’ ” he says. “I think if we played all night, there’d be someone saying, ‘Well, they didn’t play that B side from 1983,’ or whatever. What we’ve done is, we’ve got a tour set that’s going to change. We’ve got certain songs we’re going to flip out every night, but I doubt very much we’ll play the same set two nights in a row.”

Of course, the band has to insert certain songs from their repertoire (”Pour Some Sugar on Me,” “Rock of Ages,” “Love Bites”) into every set, “or we wouldn’t get out of the building alive. If I were to see the Stones, and I didn’t hear ‘Jumpin’ Jack Flash,’ I’m going to go home disappointed,” Elliott says. Not once, though, did the band consider following in Aerosmith’s footsteps; Steven Tyler and Co. will be playing two of their albums, 1975’s Toys in the Attic and 1976’s Rocks, from front to back on their summer tour with ZZ Top.

“There might be a time in the not-so-distant future where we do something similar to what Sparks did last year,” Elliott explains; the American rockers played a 21-night stint in London, playing each of their albums in chronological order over 21 days. “We’ve thought about making it into a spectacle, at some stage in our careers, where we just do every album we’ve ever done… 12 albums over 12 days, in a theater somewhere,” Elliott reveals. “It would be fantastic to be able to film it, and put it out as a DVD, where you could buy them as individuals or you could get them like a set of encyclopedias, if you like.”

This summer’s tour follows the formula Def Lep’s been using the past five years: Team up with other mega-acts from the 1980s (like Bryan Adams, Journey, Styx, and REO Speedwagon), hit the road, and rock America’s arenas, one after the other.

“I think us, Poison, and Cheap Trick is pretty much an event,” Elliott says. “Up until 2005, we were really struggling to find opening acts that wanted to tour with Def Leppard,” he admits. “It was sort of that post-grunge hangover or whatever, and all of a sudden, the Journeys and the Foreigners and people were banging on our door. We’ve had a real mixture of ’70s and ’80s bands out with us. There are no ’90s bands around, other than Pearl Jam, and they don’t need to tour with us. So, where are you going to go? Everybody was telling us that teaming up with other bands from the ’80s was going to put bums in seats, as they say, and we’ve been embracing this for five straight summers now. It’s been fantastic, and I think this year’s going to be up there with any that we’ve done so far.”

Wow! I’m the first post. Never happened before.

DT | 6/23/2009, 1:11 am EST

That’s because no one cares enough about Def Leppard anymore. They are the new oldies circut. OK, we cared enough to read, but you post in awe that you are the first and I post pointing out why we, to this second, are the only posters. I prefer the High N dry era Leppard anyway, in 81 they were a band with a-lot of gusto, they flat out rocked then.

DEF-LEPPARD F*CKING RULE!!!!!!!! I SAW THEM LAST YEAR ON THEIR ‘WELCOME TO THE SPARKLE LOUNGE’ TOUR AND IT WAS EPIC!!! And yeah being first to comment is not that big a deal mate. But good for you.

Mick Sloman | 6/23/2009, 3:35 am EST

Would pay good money to see High and Dry performed live in entirety..

Anders | 6/23/2009, 3:44 am EST

Agree with Mick.

The full High’n'Dry album performed live would be amazing. Maybe along with the best tracks from Pyromania and On through the Night.

CHEAP TRICK has been amazing forever…they should be headlining….but def leppard has some great songs too.

I’ve seen Cheap Trick several times over the years and one thing is constant: Robin Zander’s voice just keeps getting better and better.

Cool! | 6/23/2009, 10:23 am EST

These guys seem to be having fun!

malcolmkettering | 6/23/2009, 11:23 am EST

Cheap Trick is the most talented of the 3, but Def Lep really could write the hits back in the day. Poison is a joke; at least a hair-metal band with some musical talent/pedigree like Extreme or Winger would have been better. Poison were never competent musicians and at the same time were a derivative and boring ‘party band’; their mere existence is puzzling. Kind of like Tiffany.

I’m going to see Cheap Trick (new CD drops soon!), but I’m a Def Leppard fan, too. Poison? Bad band with a tone deaf singer who also happened to be a pretty good showman. I suspect they’re only on this bill because of the TV show.

Danny | 6/23/2009, 11:58 am EST

Poison? Why ruin this tour? I guess beer runs and bathroom breaks can happen then.

Keep ‘Em Coming Under Fire, British Cats! Frick, Rob and Andrew all love you for your brilliant Rock of Ages! Def Leppard Rocks! It won’t be long for the Hall of Fame! Keep Rocking, Leppard Tabbies! Make Miles Proud-He’s watching over all of you! Rock On! Meow! Thanks RS for supporting these brilliant Sheffield Cats! Once again, Meow!

this tour was booked with Poison long before the Tonys Tv show. so that has nothing to do with poison playing with them. Poison has always been fun though, they do the same show every year but it aint bad

tonedef | 6/23/2009, 12:58 pm EST

I saw Def Leppard this year. Let’s just say it was…painful: Elliot has no voice left and the duelling guitarists gave rock a back name by parading shirtless like Chippendale dancers. This band has nothing to do with rock. The audience comprised of over-excited girlfriends/wives who obviously dragged their bored-out-his-mind-boyfriends/ husbands to the gig. In essence, if you want to get laid, bring a chick; if you want to laugh your head off, wear earplugs. You’ll hear all of Elliot’s shortcomings as your girl gets wet to Pour Some Sugar on Me.

AMS | 6/23/2009, 3:02 pm EST

I read tonedef’s letter just now. Let’s just say it was painful. Telling us that Joe Elliot has no voice left when I just heard him live on TV last week and saw him in concert last year sounding terrific. Then the aptly-named tonedef informs us that the Defs have nothing to do with rock. Hey buddy, this was THE rock band in the 80’s, but that was probably the decade when you first discovered the drugs that addled your brain. Next time you go to a concert take your leering eyes off the couple next to you and put down your Hollywood Undead CD. You just might come out of your stupor.

Markus | 6/23/2009, 4:31 pm EST

How a lead singer’s voice sounds often has a lot to do with when you see the band. If you see them on the first leg of the tour, the singer’s voice is usually good, but if you catch them towards the end of a long tour, the singer’s voice is often shot. As for Def Leppard not being rock, it probably depends on what you call rock. Are they as heavy as Slayer or Metallica? Of course not. Are they rock in the vein of Mott the Hoople or Slade? Absolutely. Different strokes.

deeznuts | 6/24/2009, 12:14 am EST

Hope I am the last to post.

Imp | 6/24/2009, 1:56 am EST

Elliot’s voice was real close to “shot” at that VH-1 Rock Honors a couple of years ago.

oldpaint | 6/27/2009, 9:07 pm EST

i used to follow cheap trick back in the 70s, being on their mailing list, and knowing which small venues they would be playing.
the highlight was the former waverly beach ballroom show when they debuted their first album.
very loud, good show
they were also one of the bands who would take breaks at the bar with their fans.

AlabamaBilly | 7/4/2009, 12:15 am EST

I have not seen Def for years! Love Cheap Trick always bring it.
Hitting the show on 8/11 in Pelhem, AL it’ll be an outside show!

But I have to say to the guy who said Poison has no musical talent? Have you ever listen to CC live? I think once for once one of the best live players in his age and category! Yeah I agree the show is the same every year, but hey…always a “Nothing But A Good Time” (no pun intended) when you see them and you have hordes of HOT women running around!
Should be enough to make any guy stand up and RUN to get a tix!

I’M THERE!!! Have an extra ticket for a hot woman! Any takers LOL

shikabrown | 7/13/2009, 12:33 am EST

I saw the Leps 2 years ago in concert and they were amazing! Joe still has a great voice and the instrumentals were awesome. They also did a good job performing on Crossroads with Taylor Swift. I can’t wait until the show in Kansas City!
