Beyonce Brings Hits, Jay-Z to “I Am …” Tour Opener in New York

Of all the one-name-required pop divas who launched big arena tours within the last three years, the most unknowable star is Beyoncé. There are fountains of tabloid tales about Madonna, Britney, Mariah and Christina, but the onetime Destiny’s Child singer has mysteriously but impeccably carved out her own niche as a triple threat while hiding in broad spotlight. Perhaps that’s why she so strenuously emphasized the many dimensions of her identity at Madison Square Garden Sunday night, kicking off the U.S. leg of her “I Am …” tour in New York. The title could have been followed by a dozen sometimes conflicting terms — dancer, balladeer, street, classy, movie star, rock star, feminist, sex symbol, humble, proud, demure Beyoncé, fearless Sasha Fierce. Ultimately, though, she wanted to be consumed. “I am,” she said as the final notes rang out, “I am … yours.”

(Check out photos of Beyoncé’s fierce, glitzy show here.)

Two hours earlier Beyoncé emerged alone in a gust of smoke. Giant black curtains parted and a single beam of light illuminated her silhouette, as though the heavens had opened and simply deposited her leggy figure there. Opener “Crazy in Love” had enough pomp and glitter to have been the encore, and as Jay-Z calmly strode onstage to join his wife for his verse, the Garden lit up with camera phones and genuine hysteria. Beyoncé pulled out the stops early and often, swinging her hair around wildly, falling to her knees and dancing hard enough for every move to be seen by fans in the $20 seats. She worked, and worked it relentlessly, never missing a note, a beat of choreography, or a chance to strike a pose, hold it, and be adored.

She bent backwards at her guitarist’s feet during “Freakum Dress” and stood windblown atop the set’s biggest piece — a giant lighted staircase — for “Smash Into You” from her recent movie Obsessed. Her white dress was transformed into a stunning wedding gown during “Ave Maria,” which took a detour into Sarah McLachlan’s “Angel.” “If I Were a Boy” lifted a verse from Alanis Morissette’s biting “You Oughta Know” and heralded the arrival of her more ferocious onstage persona (in case the rocked out tune and red lighting wasn’t a tip-off, a video interlude tracked a robot Beyonce’s interactions with a cheetah as a mechanical voice intoned “Sasha Fierce”).

Thierry Mugler’s wardrobe designs put Beyoncé in a variety of gold sparkly leotards, all form-fitting, light-reflecting and leg-baring. She later donned a gown for a torchy two-song display of vocal gymnastics on “At Last” and “Listen,” which could have been dubbed her coulda-shoulda Oscar interlude.

But before she was refined, she was straight-up fierce: the fantastic “Radio” juxtaposed images of a five-year-old Beyoncé with the current-day version, which led to a brief speech that introduced “Me, Myself and I.” “I’m all about female empowerment,” Beyoncé simply stated. “We have to support each other, which is why all the musicians onstage are ladies. Give it up for my all-female band!” It wasn’t The Feminine Mystique, but it was more convincing than the girl-power show Gwen Stefani brought to the Garden a few years ago with her Harajuku Girls.

After another wardrobe-change break, Beyoncé shot into the air, suspended by wires, and glided over the crowd to a smaller stage while completing some acrobatic flips to “Baby Boy.” Before a Destiny’s Child medley, she paused to speak to specific fans: “I see you in the yellow shirt,” she said, pointing out an audience member, “and I see you with the fringe dress.” She then sang a stripped-down “Irreplaceable,” putting aside the mic as the crowd handled the first verse and chorus without her.

Seeing her fans — and making them feel acknowledged (particularly those who paid a pretty penny for front-row VIP packages) — was a major priority that reached its apex with an amusing montage of fan-made “Single Ladies” videos, which featured appearances by Web sensation Shane Mercado, Barack Obama and Justin Timberlake. After Beyoncé and her crew of dancers re-emerged to show everyone how it’s really done, she ended with ballad “Halo,” singing as she descended from the stage and shook hands with nearly every fan in the front rows. She thanked the crowd for a “wonderful first night in America,” then asked if anyone in the house was celebrating a birthday, serenading the arena with “Happy Birthday.” It was an odd way to break the momentum of the carefully plotted show, but it was a genuine moment, and her final gift of the night.

“Freakum Dress”

Nice review! Just one thing though. Its “President Barack Obama,” the man has worked too and deserves his rightful title! But other than that, excellent review of what sounds like a mind-blowing experience of a concert!

“There are fountains of tabloid tales about Madonna, Britney, Mariah and Christina”

Uh, not true about Christina. She, like Beyonce, never makes the headlines if it’s not about her music. Get your facts straight, people.

Im sorry Rolling Stones, but I was at this concert, and could not believe all of the empty seats, what has happened to Beyonce as far as tours, I heard that her tickets were not doing well, but Sunday night just proved them right. The MSG had alot and let me repeat alot of empty seats, what yall did not report is that even Janet Jackson sold out of the MSG and Madonna did also. I guess people really can not afford to go to concerts anymore.

James | 6/23/2009, 7:20 am EST

Yeah, I was surprised also to see so many empty seats, this is a recession and people are saving money, but Britney Spears sold out of the MSG, Beyonce needs to let Jay Z open for her maybe she will fill up the arenas. Also, she copied that video sean in between dress changes from Janet Jackson’s Rock with you tour, Janet had the good Janet and the bad Janet as the movie. The best part of this concert is when Hov came out he liven things up other than that, I have been to and seen better.

I dont know what some of you are referring to but I was at the concert and the ONLY SEATS THAT WERE NOT FILLED WERE THE SEATS BEHIND THE STAGE!!! THEY DONT SELL THOSE SEATS. THE CONCERT WAS SOLD OUT! I WAS FORTUNATE TO BUY 1 MORE TICK 3 DAYS BEFORE THE EVENT AND THE LADY FROM TICK MASTER SAID THAT’S IT THERE WERE NO MORE TICKS AVAILABLE. I HAD FLOOR SEATS RIGHT NEXT TO THE BSTAGE. THESE TICKS WERE ORIGINALLY RESERVED BY RADIO STATIONS, & THE VIP PACKAGES. NOW IF I WASNT IN ATTENDANCE I WOULD PROBABLY BELIEVE THESE LIES BUT I TAPED THE ENTIRE MSG TO PUT IT ON MY UTUBE. THE PLACE WAS SOLD OUT PEOPLE PLEASE STOP YOUR LIES!!!!!

LASTLY JANET WASNT THE FIRST PERSON TO DO ANYTHING HER ENTIRE CAREER SHE MIMICKED HER BROTHER SO SAYING BEY GOT SOMETHING FROM JANET IS RIDICULOUS AND SO WHAT IF SHE DID? THE SHOW WAS AWESOME & IF U DIDNT THINK SHE WAS GR8 THEN YOU WOULDNT HAVE BROUGHT A TICKET BUT I HAVE TO BELIEVE YOU WERENT EVEN THERE!

GR8 ARTICLE ROLLING STONES. BEY TORE THE HOUSE DOWN

CW | 6/23/2009, 10:23 am EST

Its interesting because from what I hear, Beyonce had 2 shows at MSG this weekend. She decided to add a second show because the first one sold out so fast. That was even in the news. So I am just confused on what people are talkin about..

Queen bey | 6/23/2009, 11:54 am EST

Sorry haters, but Beyonce’s tour has been sold out, including MSG, she has sold out everywhere, in Europe which is why she had to add extra dates at the end of the year, in Canada, and in North America, Bono, Britney Spears, Alexandria Burke, George Michael, Adele, Ciara, Katy Perry, and Sade have all been to the I Am Tour, and I expect to see many more celebrities is attendance.

Deanna | 6/24/2009, 2:43 pm EST

BEYONCE DELUSIONAL FANS STOP TELLING LIES I WAS AT THIS CONCERT AND THERE WERE ALOT OF EMPTY SEATS BECAUSE I COULD NOT BELIEVE IT WHEN I SAW THAT. I THOUGHT THAT PEOPLE WERE JUST ARRIVING LATE, BUT I KEPT LOOKING UP AND AROUND AND THOSE SEATS WERE NEVER FILLED. SHE IS DEFINATELY NOT ON MADONNA AND JANET JACKSON’S LEVEL WHEN IT COMES TO TOURS, ALL SHE DOES IS SHAKE HER BEHIND AND THROW HER LACE FRONT. I WENT BECAUSE THE RADIO STATION GAVE ME THE TICKET. IM NOT A BEYONCE FAN, BUT I ENJOYED WHEN JAY Z CAME OUT THE CROWD WHEN CRAZY!!!

Quincy | 6/24/2009, 2:51 pm EST

TO: “Please Stop the Lies”

Beyonce has always copied from Janet Jackson she even said in a interview that she pulls out Janet’s old videos to look at, it is ok because “imitation is a great form of flattery”, and everyone and they momoa knows how Matthew tries to make Beyonce a Janet Jackson but it will never happen Janet can dance triple circles around beyonce’s lace front. I am fron atlanta and her phillips arena has not sold out you can still get really good seats and her concert is July 1. Britney and Michael Jackson will have the biggest grossing tour this year baby!!

Directed to Lucy... | 6/24/2009, 5:47 pm EST

I found the site you got your information from and it is dated June 4th…which means that Beyonce is not going to be on the list because the North American leg of her tour just started.

And to stfu:

“You care…you cared enough to type a commment, whether it be negative or positive, you still took the time out.

Tasha | 6/25/2009, 9:04 am EST

I was at the concert it was sold out.. That was my first concert. I enjoy it very much.. Beyonce did a great job..Everything about the concert was really well organize.. Beyonce worked very hard.. Of course you will always have people who will hate..Go head hate…Go Beyonce

Taylor | 6/25/2009, 5:23 pm EST

Sigh, ppl sometimes are so “sptiud”. There’re always some seats in the stadium that noone can see from. You can see them in every concert, U2, coldplay, madonna,… I’ve been to her concerts in both Manchester and New York, and they were as packed as tuna can. Need say more.

tsairox | 6/25/2009, 6:10 pm EST

Beyonce deserves respect for what she does. She has come into her own quite well. She has admitted her inspirations from Janet and Michael Jackson to Aretha, Whitney, Stevie Nicks, and Tina Turner.

Obviously, for any female coming through in the last decade as an all around performer, Janet and/or Madonna would be someone to immolate (hopefully not just imitate). Even Michael and Janet were inspired by the likes of Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire. They just took it exponentially to the next level.

Janet was definitely inspired by Michael Jackson. To say that she copied him is completely blind-sighted, irreverent, and almost ignorant. She has feminism and mature sexuality in her moves. Her writing style has been reminiscent Marvin Gayes at times. The similarities appear most between the two artists (Michael and Janet) when when they exude more androgyny. (Rythm Nation, Jam (Super Bowl). They are wonderful extensions of one another, but not carbon copies.

In conclusion, the legends can never be ignored or forgotten. Beyonce and current artists will embody some of the talents and imagery of these artists and hopefully strive give you more of their own originality. Beyonce becomes more refined with maturity as an artist. That is part of growing and becoming your own legend.

Beyonce will have her own path.

Lucky | 6/27/2009, 8:48 pm EST

Beyonce and her dad buys her records and gives them as parting gift thats why people think she is still worth talking about, I heard they buy like a million everytime she makes an album, but I haven’t liked anything she’s done since she was in DC. I think she is completely overrated!!

Jay B | 6/28/2009, 12:33 pm EST

People are such haters. Clearly if her concert didn’t sell out, there wouldnt have been a second MSG Concert the next day. In fact, all of her U.S.A. and Austrailia dates are expected to sell out. And already her tour has made millions…just Wikipedia it!

Furthermore, Daddy Knowles doesnt have to make her into another Janet or anything, Beyonce is “Beyonce”…she is 27 and has her own legacy. And frankly, she is accumulating more success than Janet already and Janet is in her 40’s.

And at any concert its always empty seats for security, lighting, other reasons….thats wh they reserve a set amount of seats for the concerts.

And whoever thinks that Beyonce and her Dad goes out and buys 1million cd’s of hers is an idiot. Why would she need to do that
???? When would she advocate time to do that??? And its illegal….

LOLLLLL. you haterz really crack me up. Forget trying to convince these delusional haterz about Bey. In their twisted minds, they hate her because she makes their poor ole wannabes look like karaoke singers. Maybe you should be angry that they don’t step up their games. BOW DOWN TO THE QUEEN…she will be here awhile.

suga | 6/30/2009, 11:37 am EST

i dont kno anything bout dat concert cuz i from da bahamas but im sure it was da best now the only things left is for her to cum ova

sis | 7/1/2009, 12:48 am EST

No matter what Beyonce does: She will always be the Queen. She brings to the table her natural beautiful, talented voice, class, sophicated clothes and no female out here today can dance as well as she does. Be a hater all you want but the girl is bad! She has even taken Jay Z’s career to a new level. Every time some hater says she can’t do it – she does it better!

tracy | 7/1/2009, 12:55 am EST

Beyonce has worked very hard throughout the years to get where she is today and has an incredible group of fans all over the world. How many of you haters can dance as long as she did and sing as well as she did on her video, ” Single Ladies?” Haters, shut up and give credit where credit is do (she deserves the respect).

Sascha Voss | 7/1/2009, 7:13 am EST

Just saw Beyonce in Ft Lauderdale. Amazing Show! I have seen all the big Diva’s, but Beyonce takes the cake as the performer that can sing and dance at the same time. She never misses a note. Hot show with hot hot hot costumes, dancers, songs and moves. Jennifer Hudson, Kelly Rowland and Betty White partied in the audience to the songs of Ms. Fierce. I hope she returns soon!
