Weekend Rock List: Paul McCartney Songs

6/19/09, 2:36 pm EST

Photo: Michael Ochs Archive/Getty

Exactly 67 years ago yesterday, June 18th, a child named James Paul McCartney was born in Liverpool, England, who had kind of a big impact on music history. To celebrate the occasion Rock Daily is giving Sir Paul the gift of Rock List. From his time with the Beatles to Wings to his solo career, look back over Macca’s storied, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame-worthy catalog and tell us your favorites — songs that feature Paul on lead vocals only, it doesn’t matter if “Happiness Is A Warm Gun” is credited to Lennon/McCartney — and on Monday we’ll tally the votes and present the Readers’ List of Paul McCartney songs. Here’s just a tiny sampling of some of our faves:

• “Maybe I’m Amazed”
• “Yesterday”
• “Mother Nature’s Son”
• “Band on the Run”
• “Long Haired Lady”

“Silly Love Songs” — try and tell me that slinky bass line in the bridge isn’t one of the best pieces of music in the ’70s.

“Band On The Run”

“Helter Skelter” — where did that vocal from? That was the most rock and roll thing Macka ever put down.

All of Ram.

(Which reminds me: As indie bands here in 2009 show their love for “Ram,” with not one but two tribute CDs, my question is: When is Rolling Stone going to replace its idiotic 1971 review slamming this classic album? Unlike John Lennon’s “Imagine” album, which sounds terribly dated today, everything on “Ram” sounds fresh and alive, as if it was just created. No, Ram isn’t filled with heavy political messages. But why not judge it for what it is, rather than what it isn’t. Musically, it’s gorgeous and strange and funny and never fails to cheer me up.)

My other McCartney favorites:
Every Night
Call Me Back Again
Hi Hi Hi (What? A song that makes you want to get high and get laid? What could be bad about that?)
Waterfalls
Friends to Go
Goodnight Tonight (sorry, I can’t help it, this song makes me want to dance)
No Other Baby (a cover, but beautiful)
Ever Present Past
Much of Electric Arguments

Yes, Paul wrote plenty of crappy songs. So did John Lennon. Yet somehow, rock critics find it in their hearts to overlook all of Lennon’s weak solo material. And they bludgeon Paul with his.
