Nearly all of Living Colour’s original lineup — Vernon Reid, Corey Glover and Will Calhoun along with Doug Wimbish, who joined the band in 1993 — will release their first new studio album in five years on September 15th on Megaforce Records. The band, who broke big in 1988 with “Cult of Personality,” recorded The Chair In The Doorway, their fifth LP, in the Czech Republic. The album features hard rock, soul and politically charged tracks, and Reid describes it as “the best record we’ve made yet.” A world tour will launch in September.

Wow…is it already 20 years since VIVID? A very welcome return from a gifted band…it’s a shame their legend didn’t build much further after the first album.
A note to the author/editor of this article…the original lineup of Living Colour had Muzz Skillings playing bass. Doug Wimbish joined for the 3rd album STAIN. Even your own wording is self-contradictory, since you note that Wimbish joined in 1993 (years after their debut).

Good news. Welcome back, guys. I miss real rock ‘n’ roll like this.
Their 2nd album, Time’s Up, is amazing. Vernon Reid is one seriously under-praised guitarist.
Yo Corey, bring back the scuba suits!

I’m glad, this band has always been severely underrated, everyone was complaining about glam metal bands killing rock music at that point, but no one ever knew to look for this band. And Vernon Reid is my personal hero, he wasn’t afraid to stand up to Axl Rose when he wrote that awful song “One In A Million”. Even Keith Richards was proud of Vernon for that, he went backstage to shake his hand, lol. Anyway, I’m glad this band is coming back, I hope their album kicks ass like back in the good ol’ days and brings music back from the tragic state it’s currently in. I’m sick and tired of hearing about the Jonas Brothers, those Disney bitches need to move aside and make room for some REAL music!

Don, you are a dope. Go back to listening to your Jonas Brothers.
Rabbitbunny | 6/19/2009, 1:43 pm EST
Vernon and Corey-I’m glad you’re back-LC SAVED METAL DURING LEAN AND HARD TIMES. Along with Doug and Will you recorded Chair in Doorway in Chechoslovakia! I know Vaclav Havel loves your wor because he’s also a hard rocker. There are people all over the world who love Living Colour’s
metal/rock because their work is a cry of freedom for outcasts and I’m
one of them. Rock hard, my brave Colour friends-I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER the love you gave for
rock & roll as Doug’s friend Madonna sang in a ballad-he played on Erotica-good show boys. See you at Rams Head when all four of you come to Baltimore. Love and Peace, Rabbit Leo!

“That singer is terrible for this music.” @Don
Are you tone deaf? or is it tone death? He is that music, that music is him. I’ve listen to Corey live many times and the recordings hardly come close to capturing the experience of listening to his voice. His voice is powerful, pitch-perfect, velvety, has an incredible range, incredible affect/expression, crystal clear tones & as LOUD as rock&roll ought to be.
@Don, I respectfully disagree with your assessment. Best.

“One of the best bands of all time…”
If you’re talking about the Bad Brains and not this cheep imitation, then yes.
Jim | 6/19/2009, 6:33 pm EST
Hell yes! One of the greatest bands of their generation. Often overlooked and underrated, and I’m so glad they’re still getting it done. Can’t wait to hear the new music and if possible, to see them live.

Please, Muzz come back.

YES!!!! I am fantastically happy about a new LC album! I have always loved their music, Corey’s voice and Vernon’s guitar and always kept listening. Vernon is my personal hero as well. They are great guys and deserve all the recognition and a big hand for keeping at it and believing in the music. Peace & Love.
#arry | 6/20/2009, 5:09 am EST
Please, Doug, stay! ;o)
I also still love Muzz and VIVID, but the band is the band – here & now.
Can’t wait for september…
Snaves | 6/20/2009, 10:44 am EST
I’ll say that they were the second best band to come out of the 80’s (After RHCP). Seriously talented guys, Cory and Vernon are monsters.
Phillyrobt | 6/20/2009, 11:12 am EST
I’m sure the simpleton named Anonymous who can’t even spell cheap is an indie-rock fan. Apparently there is only allowed to be one band of African American descent that plays guitar based music but there should nbe thousands of faceless people wearing glasses playing the same music (Shins, Death cab, Decemberists etc etc)
godsize65 | 6/20/2009, 4:15 pm EST
Corey is my # 1 rock singer of ALL TIME!!!!! Hands down…#1!!!! and the 2nd album in my opinion is a stone cold classic…not 1 bad track on the entire album!!!!

Maybe they are “mummies” but their music has more energy than all the current emo and indie shit.
And I hate Radiohead by the way…
Eric | 6/21/2009, 1:23 am EST
I remember watching MTV and seeing “Cult of Personality” for the first time. When i picked my jaw off the floor after listening to the too-true lyrics, Vernon Reid’s blistering guitar solo and Corey Glover’s soaring vocals, I went out that day and bought a copy of “Vivid” — I’ve seen them twice in concert, once in NYC in 1991 and once in Buffalo, NY in 2002. To say they are amazing in concert would be the understatement of the century. I not only credit them with not only reviving hard rock at a time glam bands threatened to gloss it over with lipstick and 80s hair, I credit them with getting me into hard rock in the first place. Living Colour, you’ll always have a fan in me.
86 days until “The Chair in the Doorway”!
Sincerely,
Eric

Stain was also a great record. If you’re a fan of the first two, give Stain a second chance!
Victoria Flores | 6/21/2009, 11:28 pm EST
Well…let me explain to you guys lovers of LC..
I totally respect the band since always and following their stronger background
I just joking about the headline…cause says LIVING COLOUR RETURN and by the way I did know they playing together since 2000 or am I wrong? so…the tittle seemed THE MUMMIES RETURN like a terror movie and they are a BIGGER WARRIORS AND ONE OF THE GREATEST IN THE MUSIC SCHOOL HISTORY..
SO WHAT MEANING RSM WITH RETURN JUST TO THEM…CAUSE THEY NEVER MORE RSM DID A NOTE SINCE FIVE YEARS AGO????
PVictoria Flores | 6/21/2009, 11:48 pm EST
Well here again:
I dont want to meaning LC are mummies I mean why that RS wrote a headline like Living Colour Return if they are together since 2000 and often touring around the World…
so Living Colour Return… the headline note seemed like a terror movie The mummies return..come on!
They are one of the greatest bands and School and Background ever…
just cause RS does not know
just joking about the tittle

Mike- You’re an idiot. Doug Wimbish is one of the most respected bassists in the world. Can’t play “in the pocket” ? I seriously doubt it..
Anonymous | 6/23/2009, 10:04 pm EST
MIke! what in the hell are you talking about? “doug wimbish wouldn’t know a pocket if he fell into it”.the comment is so stupid you must be trying to rile people up! you did well.
Phillyrobt | 6/27/2009, 2:52 pm EST
“Brian” thanks for your idiotic Bad Brains comment now you can go back to crying to your Morrissey album in your Killers t-shirt and flip-flops
Jake | 7/4/2009, 1:07 pm EST
I hope wimbish takes a backseat for once, his solos are the same every time
zeruch | 7/5/2009, 2:17 am EST
It is indeed good news. Hopefully they will integrate some of the adventurous material of their various side projects into the mix.
As for some of the commentary here:
1. Wimbish is an exceptional ‘pocket’ player. He can also play very out if he wishes, and that is a potent mix. Having seen him live with Tack>>Head, he is far more than detractors seem to bother trying to understand.
2. Calling them a poor mans Bad Brains is something also quite ignorant and lacks any understanding of context.
SnakeJake | 7/21/2009, 6:52 am EST
I think the ‘Bad Brains’ comment by mister Anonymous was because Living Colour once covered a song by Bad Brains: ‘Sailing on.’
Brad of Kansas | 8/14/2009, 12:17 am EST
Yes.
The Music World Needs This Album bad.
As far as the musicianship of all involved in the band Living Colour;
they are, together; one of the most talented and simultaneously misunderstood and underestimated rock outfits ever created. C. Glover’s lyrics and vocals are the so-called ‘weakest link’, but this is mostly due to the fact that he actually pays homage and was trained to perform as a true consummate professional, the likes of which this world has not seen since the 50’s. Period.
He has the respect of those who know, and the ire of those who do not. Vernon Reid; ’nuff said. The rhythm section? Better than your favorite band, or almost any band, or even most jazz artists, and composers would love to have em on the payroll. Get Sum.

I’m driving to Austin tomorrow from my home in Houston to see the band at the small club Emo’s. The only other time I’ve seen them was 20 years ago (1989) when they opened for The Rolling Stones at the Houston Astrodome. This should be a slightly more intimate setting. I can’t wait! I’m so glad to see that both they and I am still her to rock out together!
