Ex-Evanescence Members, “Idol” Carly Smithson Form The Fallen

Adam Lambert reportedly turned down Queen and Chris Daughtry rejected overtures from Fuel, but American Idol’s Season Seven tattooed siren Carly Smithson couldn’t ignore the call of Evanescence: The former members of the “Bring Me To Life” band, having parted ways with singer Amy Lee, have recruited Smithson to front a new group called the Fallen, USA Today reports.

The band’s name is an obvious allusion to Evanescence’s first album Fallen, which featured now-Fallen guitarists Ben Moody and John LeCompt and drummer Rocky Gray. Bassist Marty O’Brien rounds out the group. Moody, who co-wrote every song on Fallen, left the band after its successful debut. While mulling a solo career, Smithson was introduced to Moody through her friend and his housemate. While Moody and Smithson shared similar thoughts about what music they wanted to make, it wasn’t until Moody saw clips of Smithson singing on YouTube that he recruited her for his new band. He told USA Today, “Carly is a rock star,” adding, “She was one of us.” Smithson previously performed “Bring Me to Life” during the 2008 Idols Live Tour.

The Fallen’s official Website, Wearethefallen.com, will officially launch Monday, June 22nd, with a press conference and a live performance in Hollywood, California. After that, the band will post their first song “Bury Me Dead” as a free download on the site. The band hopes to begin touring this September and promise to release new songs every couple of months.

Amy Lee and Evanescence, meanwhile, have been on a hiatus since the band’s 2007 album The Open Door, which featured Fallen’s Gray and LeCompt.

Hey.

The song is called “Bury Me Alive” not “Bury Me Dead”

T | 6/19/2009, 7:20 pm EST

Also.

The Open Door came out in 2006, not 2007.

Amy posted on her message board that new Evanescence music will be out next year…

BREAKING NEWS IN ROCK | 6/19/2009, 7:27 pm EST

Funny how I posted the story here myself on a Fred Durst thread at 1:16 am and then later they erased my comment only to put the story up themselves. But I’m not mad, I knew what I was doing and what I intended to happen did. RS got a clue.

Sober Blues | 6/19/2009, 8:06 pm EST

Hmm, this sounds AWFULLY familiar… oh wait, I think I know why….

Three words: Guns N Roses. This story just reeks of GNR’s history. The same way Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum teamed up with Scott Weiland to form Velvet Revolver after Axl Rose went off the deep end when the band became huge and drove everyone away. It’s the same thing with Evanescence. Amy started getting a big head once the band hit it big and the other band members were starting to have had it with her bitchy attitude. Now she’s the only original member left, and EV’s future is in limbo. Apparently she’s working on a solo album, which is code for “Screw this whole band thing, I’m going off on my own where I can make more money and have more control”. It’s so uncanny how history has a way of repeating itself almost to the T. I just hope that Carly doesn’t start having issues of her own and she winds up leaving the band. Cause that’s what happened with Scott Weiland. Velvet Revolver currently does not have a lead singer. Oh yeah, and let’s hope Amy doesn’t take 17 years to release an album.

P.S. Josh Freese is the current drummer for Evanescence. He was the same drummer who replaced Matt Sorum in Guns N Roses. You just can’t make this stuff up.

GAG. Anything with the words “American Idol” in it is bad news.

Anonymous | 6/20/2009, 2:36 pm EST

Hey.

The song is called “Bury Me Alive”

Sober Blues, John Freese only played the drums on the Fallen album. Evanescence does not currently have a official drummer or guitarist.

DG | 6/21/2009, 4:55 pm EST

the only official guitarist ev has right now is terry b formerly of the band cold. amy, terry, and tim mccord as the bassist make up ev right now.

who cares tho? amy will drive a wedge between them soon enough and then go on to have a semi-successful solo career.

Sober Blues | 6/21/2009, 6:50 pm EST

Alright, so I was a little bit wrong, but still, he worked with them nonetheless just as he did with GNR, so you can’t deny the irony of it. Two bands that were, for a brief period, on top of the world, then because of their musically gifted but nutty lead singers, went downhill ever since. I wonder how long it’ll take til James Iha, D’arcy Wretzky and Jimmy Chamberlain team up to form their own band after getting screwed by Billy Corgan. Maybe they’ll name it Busting Butternut Squash? Or The Siamese Nightmares?

Sober Blues | 6/21/2009, 7:45 pm EST

Here’s Amy’s reaction to the news! I’m surprised RS hasn’t bother to look for it, I’d imagine that’s the first thing they would do. Taken from the official EV website:

“Will the real Slim Shady please stand up?

6/19/2009
There’s some pretty weird stuff flying around right now and I’d like to clear up some confusion in the press. As our fans already know, Ben Moody left Evanescence in 2003. Evanescence came out with a follow-up to Fallen in 2006. It was called The Open Door and it debuted at #1 on the Billboard charts and reached platinum status in just over a month. The Open Door has sold more than 5 million copies worldwide. We’re currently working on new material that I’m extremely excited about. I believe that to make great music you have to give yourself the freedom to evolve. I don’t see the point in making the same record twice, so I always want to challenge myself to make something better, stronger, and more interesting than before. That takes time, but it’s worth the wait for me. Hopefully, it will be for the fans too. Look out for new music next year…

-Amy”

1) The fact she has to stress how many records the band sold worldwide clearly screams “I’m insecure!” 2) The title of the post “Will the real Slim Shady please stand up?” really means “This Carly Smithson bitch is just a second-rate version of me” which again, is code for “I’m insecure!”. 3) The fact she had to post a response to this AT ALL clearly shows part of her is worried that The Fallen might eclipse EV. Whether or not it will is another story, but if she was confident enough not care, then why did she write this? It’s almost as if she’s explaining herself to the people who think “Well, she’s the only original member left, so that must mean something”. Yeah, Ben Moody left in ‘03, we KNOW that. We know The Open Door was #1. Anyone can do some fact-checking on the Billboard website. Seriously, what was the point of writing that post? If you want to tell us you’re writing new material for next year, just tell us that. Don’t repeat the redundant crap.

fargo | 6/22/2009, 3:25 pm EST

maybe all of this will make amy come out with another album sooner.

Anonymous | 6/23/2009, 10:32 am EST

Sober Blues, that was not actually posted or written by Amy Lee. It was a statement by her record label to clear up the rumors that some media outlets have gotten wrong: that Amy has been replaced in her own band.

If you keep up with her posts, Amy Lee may be a bitch but she would never brag about record sales and such (or call Ben “Ben Moody”) since most of her fans know how much the albums have sold anyway. All the stuff about not “making the same record twice” and “new music next year” have been said before.

Sorry I’m just kinda tired of people making Amy the villian in this situation.

Guxt | 6/23/2009, 12:10 pm EST

They “hired” Carly, because she is naive and easy to manipulate. Amy is a totally different person, with attitude, and character, a strong personality that Moody couldn’t manipulate, so that’s why he left the band.

Wes | 6/23/2009, 8:48 pm EST

Amy Lee is STILL in Evanescence. They are coming out with a new album in 2010. Ben Moody LEFT Evanescence in 2003, and Evanescence continued with a new line-up with THE OPEN DOOR in 2006- which is a great album. Go to the official Evanescence website.

Carly Smithson has an amazing voice and was one of my favorites on American Idol. However I do feel uncomfortable about We are the Fallen because of Moody and the other original band members of Evanescence.

Sober Blues | 6/24/2009, 9:48 pm EST

@ Anonymous:

If it’s a statement by her record label, then why is it signed “Amy” and not “From the people at Wind-Up Records”? Makes no sense.

Mar | 6/25/2009, 12:31 pm EST

Sober Blues, Amy explains why she is posting that stuff

“There’s some pretty weird stuff flying around right now and I’d like to clear up some confusion in the press.”

And she is right. I read some crazy stuff in the press messing all the facts with lies. For the fans, yes, we already now that, but many people doesn’t.

I’m very excited with the new material next year!

And about The Fallen, well, this is ridiculous after all.

wearethefallenSUXS | 6/27/2009, 12:43 am EST

wow. this band sucks.
all of my support goes fully to amy lee of the original and better band. i think it is extremley lame how they are trying re-create amy lee’s creativity only amy lee will be amy lee dumb loser american idol.

Bob Davis | 7/4/2009, 4:39 am EST

Come on guys… Carly is awesome! She’s got a lot more charm than Amy Lee and yes, I think she is a better singer. Give her a chance and you will see her kick a$$. It’s ironic that Amy Lee ‘fired’ her band, and now, the band fired Amy Lee and replaced her with Carly, who is much better. Wait and see.

Bob Davis | 7/4/2009, 4:45 am EST

One thing I can tell you. Amy lee is patterning her career after the psycho singer from Iceland, Bjork. I think that she is making a BIG mistake. Bjork is a loser. Be yourself Amy. Be yourself Carly – that’s my advise, from a guy in the ‘industry’.

retards. | 7/6/2009, 2:19 pm EST

shut the f—- up.
you dont know anything.
number one she has no charm in her interviews shes concited, bitchy, and whatever. and number 2 amy lee has the better voice anybody can tell you that. this bitch just tries tooo hard to sound like her. and number 3 they didnt fire amy lee from the band you idiot. get your facts straight. how are they going to fire amy lee when she left the band she fired them. you know evanescence was famous becasue of amy lee right idiot? if there was no amy lee there wouldnt be an evanescence. and how is this lame un original band (obviously, look at the name) going to beat the millions and millions and millions or money evanescence made. we are the fallen and evanescence are two completley different bands becasue there waso replacement of amy lee. they just started a new band. man for someone who sapposly is in buissness you dont know shit.

retards. | 7/6/2009, 2:21 pm EST

Isabella | 7/16/2009, 8:57 am EST

Ben’s just sad that Amy rid of him long-ago and as i can see he was just holding amy back.

Amy wanted to rock out more but Ben was into to slower songs…I read it somewhere.I can’t place it.

Anyways…Amy is way better!!! and Carly…quit being a rip-off!!!GET A LIFE WHORE!!
