Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott Defends Taylor Swift’s CMTs Performance

Joe Elliott is slightly confused by some fans’ reaction to Def Leppard’s performance of “Pour Some Sugar On Me” with country-music sensation Taylor Swift during Tuesday night’s 2009 CMT Music Awards. While the performance was well received by the Nashville audience, post-show some critics described Swift’s delivery of the song’s first line as “breathless.”

“What a lot of people don’t know, because they’re not supposed to, is, she was up for five awards; two of them with us, and three on her own,” Def Leppard’s frontman says. “She won three of them, and about a minute before we started that song, she had just picked up an award. So, after she accepted the award, she had to run down the stairs, run back to her dressing room, and change her clothes.”

(Check out photos of Swift, Def Leppard, Kid Rock and more onstage and backstage at the CMTs.)

As Swift was sprinting back towards the stage, Elliott says the director started counting down to the band’s live performance. “Literally, she’s running up the ramp, trying to put her in-ear monitoring in and clip the pack to the back of her skirt, so she can try to sing this thing,” says Elliott. “She was really a busy girl that evening. All we had to do was watch, and then wander out and get ready to perform this song. People said she was a bit breathless on the first line, and that’s why she was.”

Elliott says since the awards, the CMT camp has informed him that Def Lep’s Taylor Swift collaboration was the “most-watched part of the entire evening,” and he applauded Swift for delivering a fist-pumping performance.

“We brought the house down in the building,” he says. “The reaction was unbelievable. She’s such a bundle of energy, and she’s so easy to work. She’s been a fan since she was in the womb. Her parents are responsible for her Def Leppardness. They were big Leppard fans, so obviously, she’s heard the records growing up, and rather than resent her parents’ music, she’s embraced it.”

Tuesday was a big day for Def Leppard, as the band’s CMT Crossroads: Taylor Swift And Def Leppard DVD landed in stores that morning. Elliott told Rolling Stone that it was Swift’s idea to do the episode with a band she’s loved since she could crawl.

“When she made it plain, via some interview on an Internet site, that she wanted to work with us on ‘Crossroads,’ we made it plain we were available and ready to do it,” he says. “We’ve never really had a problem, doing the cross-genre thing, if you like… dipping our toe into some other stuff. We haven’t done it so much very often in public, but we’d worked in the past with a band called Hothouse Flowers, who are more of a traditional Irish band, if you like. Its fun to do, and it takes you off the beaten track. So working with people, whether it be Taylor or the Flowers, it just gets you out of your homogenized bubble, and expands your brain, expands your musical horizons, and it makes you appreciate what you do when you come back to the day job, if you like.”

Elliott and Def Leppard launch a summer tour with Poison and Cheap Trick Tuesday in Camden, New Jersey.

made me laugh how some people reviewed the one person wrote “oh god she shudnt be singing those songs, one of my favourite songs, and one fo my fave bands, deaf leopard.”
Deaf Leopard?!! wow, you must be a huge fan.

Leopard | 6/19/2009, 2:19 pm EST

Huh?

AMS | 6/19/2009, 2:25 pm EST

Most of the commenters who hate for a living are so enraged that they can’t spell or think straight. YouTube is crawling with these miserable souls.

DL and Taylor were incredible together, and for those who didn’t like it, their loss.

Anonymous | 6/19/2009, 3:23 pm EST

BIG difference between Hothouse Flowers and t. swift. She is a very mean girl and drives me silly.

Tipptoggy | 6/19/2009, 3:36 pm EST

Funny

In Ireland Hothouse Flowers are never considered Traditional.

I wonder what we’d think of that Country Music stuff – I mean if the pros can’t work out the genre what chance have the public?

Declan Nerney for ever!

TAYLOR SWIFT IS GOD ! | 6/19/2009, 5:19 pm EST

I WISH ALL GIRLS WERE AS BEAUTIFUL AS SHE IS ! YUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

Vicki | 6/19/2009, 8:57 pm EST

Ok that explains the horrible beginning of the song but does that defend the atrocious out of tune singing throughout? Especially the end? I had to rush to turn off the TV before my ears started bleeding. Many legit country sites are speaking the truth on this. She sounded horribly “karaoke”.

Anonymous | 6/19/2009, 9:51 pm EST

I’d like to pour some of my sugar on Taylor Swift.

Truly awful | 6/19/2009, 10:32 pm EST

Honestly, Taylor ruined Leppard’s performance for me and it had nothing to do with her being ‘breathless.’ She was too loud, out of tune, and her over-the-top dance moves (if you can call them that – all she needed was a stripper pole) were a total turnoff. Looked to me like Def Leppard was only there to be her backing band and that the performance we all about her rather than it being a collaboration. Yuck.

Lexia | 6/19/2009, 11:49 pm EST

I don’t think the CMT awards performance with Def Leppard was Taylor Swift’s best, but she’s still a very talented girl. The Crossroads collaboration was much better.

Sarah | 6/20/2009, 2:39 am EST

Oh please. It’s painfully obvious that Taylor has an excellent recorded voice, but a horrible live voice….
And the dancing?! Yikes…

Michelle | 6/20/2009, 5:36 am EST

wooowww i dont see u guys on stage doing her job,all u people must be OLD!!!! I think she was awesome. Even taylor said,I dont care how i look or sound its the lyrics that matter. She had a great time and that is all that matters? dont u tell ur kids that? Geez mean OLD people!

Paula | 6/20/2009, 6:34 am EST

I noticed that Taylor actually did 3 songs on the show. She seems to be a sweet girl but no voice. Her voice does not sound good at all live. Her CD’s may be ok. With the recording industry tools now you can make almost anyone sound good. I thought the rap with T-Pain & the beginning & the necklace around his neck was a little over the top but doing the Def Leppard song was not appropriate for a young girl & this band. I am an 80’s fan but if I had been her mother I would not have wanted my daughter to do that particular song. Her songs just do not fit in with Def Leppard’s. I live close to Nashville & know things about the music business & a lot of people are saying that they don’t know how she got to be so successful because her voice just isn’t that good.

Riley | 6/20/2009, 8:52 am EST

If you guys didn’t notice, all the singers on the CMT sounded a little off. It was the sound system and the mic’s that were way off, especially to the tv viewers. I have even read that on a couple of other sites about the system being messed up. Lighten up! I saw her in concert in NC and she was great!

tina | 6/20/2009, 9:48 am EST

she’s so talented. I like her

gimmme a break | 6/20/2009, 1:15 pm EST

Def Leppard? Bret Micheals? Slow week at Rolling Stone? Stop writing about hairline challenged, burnt out rockstars please. Joe elliot suckes and will always suck.

Steely Fred | 6/20/2009, 3:08 pm EST

Paula, You are so correct. She does not have a real quality to her voice. She has a package that’s easy to sell. There are millions of amateur singers that have much more talent. Country fans, in general, are some of the least, musically discerning, fans I’ve ever witnessed.

Realist | 6/20/2009, 3:17 pm EST

Taylor Swift could sell 100 million records and not approach the brilliance of No Line on the Horizon.

Leonardo | 6/20/2009, 3:55 pm EST

Girl’s got talent…she has a great voice and is incredible beautiful.
My surprise is that Joe usually acts like an asshole (would love to see Axl kick his ass) but this time he said something nice and right for a change.
It was a great performance…Def Leppard actually is a great rock band.

Bruno | 6/20/2009, 4:02 pm EST

Stop with the hate…people loved the performance…
Def Leppard kicks’ ass

Leonardo | 6/20/2009, 4:08 pm EST

Girl’s got talent…also she actually has a great voice and is incredible beautiful.
My surprise is that Joe usually acts like an asshole (would love to watch Axl kick his ass)but this time he said something nice and right for a change.
It was a great performance and be the reaction of the audience you can see that people really enjoyed it

Scott | 6/20/2009, 6:03 pm EST

She doesn’t have a great voice, but there are a lot of singer songwriters with worse voices. And she does write quality songs. She just needs a little more life experience so she can write from a perspective that adults can relate to. She also needs to focus on writing music that is friendly to her voice. She didn’t seem to have a problem performing songs from her first album live. If she does she will be around for a long time.

Scott | 6/20/2009, 6:23 pm EST

Hey Realist No Line on the Horizon is a great album. Almost as good as No Es Lo Mismo.

Bored | 6/20/2009, 6:52 pm EST

Wow-this qualifies as news? That Taylor “I’ll be joining the Jonas Brothers in the ‘where are they now file’shortly” Swift was out of breath? Slow news day indeed!

Tman | 6/20/2009, 11:07 pm EST

Wow, why all the haters. I have never been a giant fan of either Taylor or Def Leppard but I thought their performance on the awards show was great. And yes I do understand it is live and she had just won an award and she did go change outfits. I liked it well enough that I bought the Crossroads DVD. Its really good and I would recommend to all.

the REAL tc | 6/21/2009, 9:23 am EST

i don’t see what the big deal is.
Taylor Swift is there to draw the younger audience into country music. It seems to be working.

jody | 6/21/2009, 10:41 am EST

Honestly i wish these no talent singers would stay away from those with talent its just like they are scraping from the bottom of the barrel to make comebacks anymore, def leppard would have no problem making a new start, why ruin their status by performing with someone who could’nt hit a note if it was right in front of her..lose barbie and move on.

Beak | 6/21/2009, 2:33 pm EST

I thought her CMA song with Def Leppard made her look and act like a piece of trash. Maybe if they would have added a pole on stage she could have just done a strip tease and got it over with. They sure didn’t need some 19 year old standing up their shaking her skinny rump singing their music.

Lush | 6/22/2009, 5:46 am EST

Taylor is amazing.Def Leppard are amazing. So what if Taylor was a little out of breath? For the haters,I would like to see you pick up an award, run downstairs, change clthes, run back upstairs while trying to get your ear piece in and trying to clamp the pack to the back of your shirt…come on,give the girl a break. If you don’t like her or Def Leppard, don’t bitch.

abc | 6/22/2009, 8:09 am EST

I am from Reading PA and knew Taylor Swift’s family. She grew up on a small horse farm on Freemansville Road, not “Wyomissing, PA” like her bio insists. She moved to Wyomissing later on, right before she moved to Nashville. Trust me – there are NO horse farms in Wyomissing. It’s filled with big, expensive homes and mansions. Her house had an elevator in it, for christ’s sake. I’m sure they implied she lived in Wyomissing her whole life because it sounds more “country” (ala like “Wyoming”).

Taylor Swift has always had a luxurious and wealthy lifestyle… Her dad made his millions off being a stockbroker in NYC. Got her some sleazy junior “record deal” with Sony by the time she was 12, even though she had minimal songwriting experience, if any. A few years later she was getting huge endorsements by Taylor Guitars and appearing in Abercrombie and Fitch ads, years before she ever had a cd out, only being a tween at this time (ahem, daddy’s money). Her dad also at this time got her involved in the Britney Spears talent agency (you know, cause that’s so country). TRUST ME – SHE ONLY GOT ALL OF THIS BECAUSE HER FAMILY IS LOADED.

Ever wonder why she can’t sing for s— live? Here’s your answer. She is a joke around here (Berks County) to the people who truly knew her “abilities”. I’ve heard she is shunned around the musical Nashville scene as well. She attempted to get into acting before this too. Her family has sold her since the beginning. She also wasn’t really country off the bat. She was attempting to do more of a pop acoustic route until it was recommended by a friend to go country (I still have her lackluster demo cd laying on my shelf). She is Avril Lavigne in country boots….a man made product of the music industry.

STOP THINKING SHE IS A TALENTED SONGWRITER. She pays for it all people! This girl probably barely knows how to tune her guitar. “Co-writing” today is the equivalent of telling someone to write a song for you, footing the bill for it, and then slapping your name on it. This type of payola in the industry has been going on for years. It’s gotten so worse in recent years that I would compare it to the steroid scandal in the sports industry — all integrity has been lost. Don’t worry though, more and more people are realizing Taylor is a phony (her tone-deaf videos on youtube never lie) and more people are speaking out. I read an interview of her once where she stated when she was 11 her family drove down to Nashville and she walked down music row knocking on the doors of labels and handing out her cd, making it sound like she was a freaking cow girl. Puhhhh—-lease. Don’t EVER believe the hype.

Ann | 6/22/2009, 9:42 am EST

Joe Elliott’s comments were so kind. What a gentleman…

Bruuuuuce | 6/22/2009, 10:36 am EST

ABC, you sound jealous as hell. What are you, the girl down the street she stopped playing Barbie with and now you’re crying about it? Get over it..even if any of that’s true, so what?

heathen2002 | 6/22/2009, 11:26 am EST

ABC called it like it is!

Fozzie Bear | 6/22/2009, 12:11 pm EST

Even 15 yr old girls get tired of stuff. Taylor Swift will fade. Her extremely limited vocal and songwriting ability will ensure that.

rs1234 | 6/22/2009, 1:30 pm EST

Why are you covering this Rolling Stone? These are not talented artists, what are you doing? There are real TALENTED ARTISTS out there, stop selling out THIS IS PATHETIC!!!!

Loved it | 6/22/2009, 2:53 pm EST

I totally understand why Taylor seemed a bit winded at the beginning of the performance, and it was very noble of Joe Elliott to come to her defense.

Everyone on stage looked like they were having a great time, as did the audience. Isn’t that what matters at a show/concert? I’ve seen some very talented musicians live, but some of them just bored me to death.

Also–how else are you supposed to dance to “Pour Some Sugar on Me”? Chill out, folks.

Mama and daughter Olivia 5yr | 6/23/2009, 4:23 pm EST

We are one of the biggest fans of Taylor. She has taken my daughter’s heart at a early age of 3, now getting ready to turn 5. We live in south carolina, close to Charlotte north carolina and are hoping to go see her in Sept. We wanted to go last year but could not make it. She is beautiful inside and out. When I hear her song on her new cd “best Day” I tear up everytime thinking of Olivia and I. Her music is certainly to the point, not taking boy stuff, just like I want my daughter to be. I hope you are not reading all these negative remarks Taylor. If you are by chance, know down deep in your heart you are a tremendous performer! Your voice is beautiful just like you are. You work hard from what I read, and my daughter and I would love to meet you one day. I looked for back stage passes but could not locate them- couldn’t afford them anyway- but nice thought! I wish you could see olivia with her guitar singing your songs!!! we loved you and def Leppard at the CMT awards! Big night for you girl, like we knew it would be. Your brother seemed sweet too. So if any of you naaaay saaaayers are reading this, I as you can see took a different approach to posting a comment. I hope someone in Taylor’s world reads it to tell her we say hello, and maybe she is skipping past all the nobodies to the sombodies, and having a laugh with good spirit. I believe we all have a voice, but some of you are obviously jealous. with love
the Barfields 704-258-8152 call us for back stage passes Taylor!!!!!

pat | 6/26/2009, 4:05 pm EST

I have seen her in person and she is actually even prettier, softer. Not every singer should have Celine Dion range, that is not her style or aim. Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dillon yell and squeak, but are big stars, not everyone wants lyrics belted at them

@ABC: There is a big difference between Avril and Taylor. Avril can sing live and Taylor can ´t.

Anonymous | 8/22/2009, 10:27 am EST

yeah people she has ”no” talent
that’s why she gets always nominated for awards
and even for one grammy already

can you all do better than her?
haha

Bob | 8/24/2009, 2:45 pm EST

She is not the only one without talent, who is nomitated for awards. People like Britney, Madonna, Shakira, Rihanna, Coldplay and Maroon 5 have awards and nominations, too.

Eugene | 9/14/2009, 4:00 pm EST

I’m just wondering who’s paying her off through all these awards and PR campaign? Ideas, anyone?

- she’s got no voice to speak of;
- Live performances from her?
- she can barely open her eyes as whole face is.. like, bloated… heavy drinking? :) Tons of makeup used to cover it all, it seems…

so… who’s paying money???

Eugene | 9/14/2009, 4:07 pm EST

BTW, in my humble opinion, the best thing happened to Country music lately is likely to be Carrie Underwood (old school, new attitude! ;) ). If TS is what Country is becoming, I quit listening to it ;) C’mon, it’s a joke, right – a country singer with no voice! Give me a break… it’s a parody.

As for doing better than her – just give me the dough she obviously had someone paid for her career, and everything is possible, baby, yeah!

Jeff | 9/23/2009, 5:08 pm EST

ABC, you could be right.

The lesson to learn in any case: get some money, then your dreams can come true. That’s what I did. I retired at age 32.

vast sections of the population resent wealth and success, and want to drag those who have $$$ down to their level through taxation and “social justice”.

There are more millionaires per capita in my city than anywhere else in North America.

Lots of them are people from foreign countries who come here and become rich by using their brains and be seeing opportunities and capitalizing on them. Anyone can do it, but they’d need to drop the entitlement delusions, and replace these with motivation and creativity.

TheShaz | 10/14/2009, 5:19 pm EST

The Crossroads live version was sounded much better. And I do agree ther other live acts that night did not “sound” well.

On the Crossroads my favorite song was “When Love & Hate Collide”. IMHO is was a very good collaboration.

On Crossroads “Pour Some Sugur on Me” sounded just fine, and it was LIVE. So I know Taylor and DF can sing it together….again with some of the earlier posters bad mic/equipment setup seems to be the culprit.

Rob | 10/21/2009, 2:00 pm EST

They did GREAT, and i am happy they had fun!!!! thats all that counts!

nadia | 11/18/2009, 3:11 am EST

taylor and def leppard were awesome that night… i love taylor’s music and she has a sweet, beautiful voice that i love listening to… u go girl…
