Bon Jovi, CSN, Mraz and Jones Join Songwriters Hall of Fame

“On a night like this, it comes back to one thing: the power of the pen,” Bon Jovi told Rolling Stone before his induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame last night in New York City. “If you write one song that comes across decades, you’re lucky. If you write a body of them and you’re recognized in the Songwriters Hall of Fame, it’s prestigious.” The organization’s 40th induction ceremony was a celebration of the individuals behind such time-spanning hits, with an eclectic group of honorees that also included Crosby, Stills and Nash, Jason Mraz and Sir Tom Jones.

Bon Jovi and longtime collaborator/bandmate Richie Sambora celebrated their induction with a fiery “Wanted Dead or Alive” after Daughtry honored them with a rocking “I’ll Be There For You.” James Taylor was on hand to perform a medley of Crosby, Stills and Nash’s “Long Time Gone,” “Love the One You’re With” and “Teach Your Children” before inducting the trio, who handled their acceptance with humor (said Stills, “I have to thank all the great women who dumped me and all the dumb politicians that did things that [inspired me] to write songs”) before delivering a gorgeous “Helplessly Hoping.”

Past honoree Rob Thomas presented Jason Mraz with the Hal David Starlight Award. “I hate you,” Thomas joked. “You’ve ruined the curve for everybody. You’re kind of young, and you’re cute and you’re just too talented and I think you should stop.” A visibly touched Mraz choked up while thanking the crowd. “I thought that songwriting either makes you spiritual or a crazy person, and if it’s not doing either one of those things then you’re doing it wrong. I’m honored to feel like I’m doing it right.” he said before performing an inspired version of “I’m Yours.”

American Idol judge and songwriter Kara DioGuardi presented Tom Jones with the Howie Richmond Hitmaker Award. “You have to have songs to get your foot in the door… You have to have great songs, and you have to be lucky to recognize them,” Jones, who recently started co-writing his material, told the room. His spirited medley of “Green Green Grass” and “It’s Not Unusual” was halted when Jones asked to start “Unusual” over “I started in the wrong place. I’ve only been singing this since 1964!” he deadpanned.

The night also saw special awards presented to Motown hit writers Holland-Dozier-Holland (”Stop! In the Name of Love,” “Reach Out, I’ll Be There”), Andy Williams (”Moon River”) and music publisher Maxyne Lange. Also inducted with this year’s class were the Young Rascals’ Felix Cavaliere and Eddie Brigati; British songwriting team Roger Cook and Roger Greenaway (”You’ve Got Your Troubles,” Coca-Cola theme “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing (In Perfect Harmony”); Hair lyricists James Rado and Gerome Ragni and composer Galt MacDermot; and lyricist/composer Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pochahontas, Prince of Egypt).

who in gods name would give jason mraz an award?

Anonymous | 6/19/2009, 11:59 am EST

“I tried to be chill but you’re so hot that I melted”

This is worthy of a songwriting award? Unbelievable.

nesh | 6/19/2009, 12:35 pm EST

i can think of so many talented songwriters that could have gotten this award, instead of Jason. Mraz is talented too, but I dont believe he deserved it at this point of his life..

Schultz | 6/19/2009, 12:47 pm EST

“it’s my life; I’m gonna live it while I’m alive” is HOF worthy?

Way to go BJ – Once again showing the majority people’s musical tastes are in their mouths…

umm.. | 6/19/2009, 12:51 pm EST

CSN – deserved
Bon Jovi – debatable
Jason Mraz – no dice

INSANE | 6/19/2009, 1:07 pm EST

Bon Jovi in the songwriter’s hall of fame is the most insane thing I have ever heard.

Are they planning to honor the guy from Ratt next year?

Mike | 6/19/2009, 1:16 pm EST

What about Beyonce?

Judge | 6/19/2009, 1:27 pm EST

“when you breathe, I wanna be the air for you, These five words I say to you
I’ll be there for you.”

Horrific.

montymagpie | 6/19/2009, 1:27 pm EST

Rob Thomas called Jason Mraz “cute”?

Hey RS, do you know if they did it after the event?

Come out of the closet, Rob!

Ken | 6/19/2009, 1:31 pm EST

Why is this thing not televised?

Robin | 6/19/2009, 1:38 pm EST

Picking out individual lyrics out of context and then ragging on the artist isn’t that open minded. “I want to hold your hand” doesn’t sound that great out of context either.

Lennox | 6/19/2009, 1:41 pm EST

A songwriting Hall of Fame without Tom Waits. Balderdash.

Lennox | 6/19/2009, 1:41 pm EST

A songwriting Hall of Fame without Tom Waits. Balderdash.

Holy Jersey Shit, Batman! | 6/19/2009, 1:44 pm EST

Are you fucking kidding me? Listen, whatever your musical tastes, I would urge you to put the very “best” of what Bon Jovi has to offer against anything by The Beatles, Stones, Who, Led Zep, Dylan,or even contemporaries like Pearl Jam, The White Stripes, R.E.M. etc.

Now, how fucking silly does that award seem? Or can anyone argue(with a straight face that is) that the deeper meaning of the songs on “Slippery When Wet” hold up against albums like “Quadrophenia”, “Sgt. Pepper”, “Ten”, “Highway 61 Revisited” etc?

I’ve really tried to appreciate and understand Bon Jovi’s long term appeal MUSICALLY, and after all this time I still don’t get it.

I think we can safely take a band like Kiss’ music more seriously now, if Bon Jovi are regarded as the cream of the songwriting crop.

Good Lord.

wasteland | 6/19/2009, 1:54 pm EST

“when you breathe, I wanna be the air for you, These five words I say to you
I’ll be there for you.”

Excellent.

“I tried to be chill but you’re so hot that I melted”

Just ONE line and also out of context. Very strong argumentation you have there Anonymous…

I don´t know about Mraz, but Bon Jovi really do deserve this.

Ben | 6/19/2009, 2:20 pm EST

CSN – of course.
As for the others, why?

Goo Goo | 6/19/2009, 2:25 pm EST

Those lines referenced are not good lyrics. That simple. You can’t take crap out of context.

Comfort Inn | 6/19/2009, 2:46 pm EST

No Warren Zevon? no Tom Waits? Really Bon Jovi? wow

Rockon | 6/19/2009, 5:02 pm EST

CS & N and Jovi and Sambora prove that songwriting is a collaborative effort. We all know the popular choruses and lyrics form both both bands…the simple minded critics should delve into the deeper tracks of both bands. You finds some really good stuff.

brassknuckles | 6/19/2009, 5:05 pm EST

As a body of work it’s hard to top Bon Jovi for arena rock and sing along choruses — Bad Name, Livin on a Prayer and Wanted and as for Crosby, Stills and Nash — Teach your Children and Chicago easily make them worthy.

kukabeera | 6/19/2009, 5:10 pm EST

Hey Holy Jersey….I can appreciate Dylan as a songwriter, but MUSCIALLY as a PERFORMER…give me a freakin break. Maybe you been spending too many decades with the bong…thats why you can’t appreciate some of these more modern songwriters.

Anonymous | 6/19/2009, 5:30 pm EST

“I’m Yours” is not the only song Jason ever wrote.

Anonymous | 6/19/2009, 5:30 pm EST

“I’m Yours” is not the only song Jason Mraz ever wrote.

ill back the jovi! | 6/19/2009, 6:13 pm EST

bon jovi do deserve this! they write song after song hit after hit and never get the praise they deserve, and whoever said “can you argue with a straight face that bon jovi deserve this” then yes i can!!!!!!!!!!

Immissaya | 6/19/2009, 9:15 pm EST

Dear haters,
You can not judge Jason Mraz by just one song – I’m Yours.
Before you criticize this man, please do your research.

Starlight Award is presented to up-and-coming songwriter.
Jason’s lyrics are soulful, meaningful, uplifting.

Just check out his performance and you’ll be impressed by his talent.

Rain | 6/19/2009, 10:19 pm EST

Whatever, people have been hating on Bon Jovi from the very beginning, but they’ve outlasted every band from that era by changing their sound instead of holding on to the past. You guys are bitching about the songs they wrote in the 80s, but clearly you pay no attention to their more recent music. What about “Who Says You Can’t Go Home”? You can’t deny that was a pretty uplifting song, lyrically. All of you guys saying “Guns N Roses saved rock in the 80s”, where’s Guns N Roses now? They released a couple of albums, and then the next one came nearly 2 decades later with an entirely different lineup. And that record went nowhere. Perhaps because people could already download the songs on Limewire way before the album’s release? Stop being such music snobs, of course Bon Jovi will never be Led Zeppelin or The Who or The Beatles or Bob Dylan. No one will ever be them because those guys are from a bygone era, even the people who try their hardest to be them fail miserably. Wake up and realize 1969 isn’t coming back, it’s 200-freaking-9, get with the program and look for other stuff to cling to. Nothing wrong with loving the music you (or your parents) grew up with, I certainly enjoy a good tune from the 60s and 70s every now and then, but stop hoping that there will be a Beatles 2.0 coming up, it ain’t gonna happen. There are plenty of good bands out there, all you need to do is take advantage of your mouse and keyboard and make good use of Google. And stop taking on such an elitist attitude towards music, music is art, and like all forms of art it is subjective. Some people will think a certain band sucks, others will think that same band kicks ass. It’s called an opinion, there’s no “right” one, only various ones. Get over yourselves. It’s not caviar.

Elizabeth | 6/19/2009, 11:15 pm EST

Time to pull out all the bells and whistles and give a big cheer for Crosby, Stills and Nash!

By the way — wonder what Graham Nash thought when he heard ‘Stop in the Name of Love’ and “Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress’, both part of his repertoire when he briefly rejoined the Hollies?

Ray | 6/20/2009, 12:22 am EST

Anyone who writes, “I want to be just as close as the Holy Ghost is,
And lay you down on bed of roses” should be ineligible.

Anonymous | 6/20/2009, 5:55 am EST

Some good Mraz lyrics, if you look further than your nose

Fists knock bumping and wrists locked twisting up a rizla
Kid Icarus on the transistor
Nintendo giving me a blister
I Bend-over and take it in the kisser
-My Best friends are hitting on my sister
I try to tell em that they still a wisher
Cause she already got herself a mister
And besides that’s gross don’t wanna diss her
Didn’t I say…

-I do not keep up with statistics
I do not sleep without a mistress
I do not eat unless it’s fixed with
Some kind of sweet like a licorice
-My home is deep inside the mystics
I’m known to keep digging on existence
I’m holding in the heat like a fish stick
My phone it beeps because I missed it

Bonjovina | 6/20/2009, 9:35 am EST

Check out the Bon Jovi lyrics from songs like Whole lot of leaving, These Days, Miracle, Lie to me, Midnight in Chelsea, Last man standing, etc. Bon Jovi always write their own music and lyrics.

Oh, but you used to think that Bon Jovi were just an 80’s band. You learnt something today.

Hey kukabeera | 6/20/2009, 12:28 pm EST

My bong is safely put away, along with my vinyl copy of “Slippery When Wet”-exactly where both of them belong. You must have stolen it, however, because the award is for sonwriting, not performing. Before you criticize, get your facts straight.

Secondly, if you actually read my post I mentioned some contemporaries that would be deserving of this award(Pearl Jam, R.E.M. etc.). I could live with those current acts receiving the award over some second-rate wanna-be Springsteen hair band who’s songs fit right in with the Poison’s of the world, among others.

Next you’ll tell me what a masterpiece “Talk Dirty to Me” is.

Jesus man.

Bon Jovi's Brilliance | 6/20/2009, 12:34 pm EST

A Sample:

“With an iron-clad fist, I wake up and french-kiss the morning.”

Or how about this little nugget:

“This Romeo is bleeding, but you can’t see his blood.”

Breathtaking.

DrZ | 6/20/2009, 2:22 pm EST

Ridiculous…Too bad Bon Jovi’s “greatness” did not translate on stage when paired up with acts that were REALLY great.Like in the mid 80’s with Ratt. Those guys DESTROYED Bon Jovi every night.I can’t understand that even though real deal content beats bullshit every time, the masses buy the cheese instead.Just like Van Halen’s biggest hit they ever had being “Jump”. Sad…

trock | 6/20/2009, 2:44 pm EST

Pete Townshend is not in the songwriters hall of fame. Enough said.

Comfort Inn | 6/20/2009, 5:42 pm EST

No Joe Strummer either? What is the criteria for this, songwriting or concert frenzy, great songs or how many are played on the radio

Rinestone | 6/21/2009, 12:55 am EST

Tim Eimiller | 6/22/2009, 2:31 am EST

Pete Townshend, Ray Davies, Elvis Costello and David Byrne aren’t in this Hall of Fame. But Jon Bon Jovi is. What a farce.

Who are these assclowns deciding these HOF’s…Please quit promoting mediocrity….R&R HOF and now this SR HOF…What a cruel and sick joke you play on listeners and great musicians…

Linus | 6/22/2009, 4:06 am EST

Right, so they have Dolly Parton in this Songwriters Hall of Fame… but they don’t have Jim Morrison or Axl Rose?

and don’t get me started on Bon Jovi!

Annalise | 6/22/2009, 6:02 am EST

listen to me…BON JOVI IS THE GREATEST SONG WRITER THAT IS STILL GOING ON FROM 26 YRS AGO. THEY DESERVE THIS AWARD FOR AMAZING SONGS AND AN OHH SO BEAUTIFUL VOICE. i rest my case.

acousticangel | 6/22/2009, 9:41 am EST

Stephen looked amazing and David a bit “shopworn” but Stephen shone like the great light that he is. I almost went to this and was sad I couldn’t go but I was there for Stephen in spirit. Bravo Stephen on a megawatt performance and a job well done.

Faninfinland | 6/22/2009, 10:19 am EST

I congratulate Bon Jovi for the induction into songwriters HOF! As to the criticism here…Do I say ALL their lyrics are great? Maybe not but then again, neither were those of the Beatles!

Bon Jovi/Lennon-McCartney? | 6/22/2009, 11:02 am EST

I’m going to pretend I didn’t just read that. A post comparing Bon Jovi’s songwriting to The Beatles. I would be laughing my ass off if I thought you were being funny-I take it back, I’m still laughing my ass off.

I think we should induct the guys from Cinderella and Bang Tango next. Maybe Jackyl?

For me, Bon Jovi is alot like McDonalds- billions sold, but pure junk food. Inducting them into the SHOF is alot like giving a McDonalds fry cook a culinary arts award.

People, please for the love of all that is holy stop defending their place in any HOF. They obviously made a deal with the devil at some point to have managed to stay around this long on the strength of such drivel. And a HOF honor?
Fucking hell.

nayer | 6/22/2009, 11:47 am EST

Yeesh, Rob Thomas inducted Jason Mraz?? Neither one of them belong in this “hall of fame”, and I use the term loosely, as it appears anyone with a radio single can get in! Yikes!

Arbel | 6/22/2009, 9:25 pm EST

Jason Mraz is unfortunately one of the very few artists that are underappreciated. He has more than “I’m Yours.” I’ve gone to his concert twice now, and the guy’s songs are just beautiful.

JP | 6/22/2009, 11:43 pm EST

Please note the neither the talented Jason Mraz or Rob Thomas are inductees to the Hall. They are winners of the Hal David Starlight Award. The award recognizes young songwriters that are up and coming. I think both of them deserved the award.

hanma | 6/24/2009, 2:22 am EST

Is this some sort of Joke – How can Jason Mraz be put in there before people like Kurt Cobain, Billy Corgan and axl rose what a joke

hui | 6/24/2009, 2:25 am EST

“i been spending way too long checking my tongue in the mirror
and bendin over backwards just to try to see it clearer”

Is this supppose to be a joke

SpKuKuY :pp | 6/24/2009, 4:17 pm EST

Wow.

Anonymous | 6/24/2009, 4:21 pm EST

hmmm lets see try listining to keep the faith or these days and you will understand why bon jovi is in there. they definitley didn’t sell out for those two albums as they were the complete opposite of which was going on in the 90’s. if you think kurt cobain was so great try listining to him and nirvana live. they cant even play their own songs right.

Dina Peduto | 6/24/2009, 4:39 pm EST

Jon deserves everything that comes his way and more. I have been a loyal fan since 1984 and still going strong. My son was even born on his b’day. What a weird coincidance.

Stop slating and read | 6/24/2009, 4:43 pm EST

Jon and Richie both completely deserve to be inducted. To put it simply, they have outlasted everyone from that era, they write song after song, each one individual but each one important in it’s own sense. The majority of the songs do have a deep meaning. People might scourn at Livin’ On A Prayer, but if people decided to find out what it was about instead of passing it off as a smelly bit of cheese, then those people would realise what genius it is.
The thing is, the band have only ever had one song that none of them wrote ever on any of the albums they have ever released – and it was the first. They’ve also never played it live, simply because it isn’t there’s.
Perhaps they’re not the best band ever, and I couldn’t say they are. But as I said before, every song has it’s own meaning. No doubt about it, New Jersey and These Days were the two true high points of the band, but since they still have produced some stunning songs. Again, like Livin’ On A Prayer, It’s My Life falls into a similar category. Stunning lyrics, but with the rock background it’s lost. Put it into the format of This Left Feels Right and it’s absolutely stunning, no doubt about it.
The real stand out is no doubt Last Man Standning. The one off the boxset is my personal favourite, but both version say the same things. The reason the band has survived is because they’re different to every artist nowadays. They aren’t sucked in by the record company and spat out after two years, they are a band, not a group of average singers and, most importantly, they write their own songs.
Well done to the boys from New Jersey. They deserve it. The fact you might not like their music does not mean they don’t write stunnning songs. I saw a comparison to the Beatles (or at least a mention of them) further down the page. What did the Beatles ever write that was so much better than what Bongiovi and Sambora wrote?

Bev | 6/24/2009, 4:44 pm EST

Congratulations to Bon Jovi…you deserve it…

Bon Jovi owns you. | 6/24/2009, 4:49 pm EST

Some of you are truly fucktards! Of course Bon Jovi deserves this award. As you sit at your desk wishing you had some kind of life, go and listen to OTHER Bon Jovi songs besides all of their hits. Nirvana and Pearl Jam, just because they come across as more serious, doesn’t mean they write better songs. Nirvana certainly didn’t, but Pearl Jam is just a different kind of band. The Beatles, Zeppelin…they are from a different era, so the comparison really can’t be made. Robert Plant has some VERY silly 80s music…I’ll tell ya that much.

Point is, Bon Jovi ARE legends and have outlasted most everyone. Nirvana didn’t have a chance to screw up and Pearl Jam new music is just boring. I’ve seen them live and it was a good show, but the Jovi show was light years above it.

Get over the hits, get off of your high horses and realize Bon Jovi will ALWAYS be rewarded, because they’ve remained relevant for 26 years now.

Congrats Bon Jovi…also CSN.

Jason Mraz has some good tunes..get over yourselves people.

Anonymous | 6/24/2009, 4:54 pm EST

Bout time Jon Bon Jovi/Ritchie Sambora are recognised for being music legends

Jovi Girl | 6/24/2009, 5:20 pm EST

What is up with all the Jon Bon Jovi bashing?? Holy Jersey Shit, Batman!… what a jerk you are! It’s quite OK not to like someone or their music but, there’s no need to be so nasty.

“I wanna be, just as close as,
The Holy Ghost is,
And, lay you down….,
On a bed of roses.”

Just some of the words Jon has penned which I appreciate. Don’t be such haters people – just don’t listen to whatever music you don’t like.

Congratulations to all those inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Rob Thomas before BJ&Richie??? | 6/24/2009, 5:24 pm EST

WTF??
I like Rob Thomas, but Jon Bon Jovi & Richie Sambora are WAY better and have much more expirience! They should have gotten it years ago, but still… Congrats guys!!

Jovi Girl | 6/24/2009, 5:24 pm EST

Thank you “Bon Jovi owns you”…. Good to know I’m not alone in this and that I’m not the only one who recognized these retards. Ignorance is bliss (as they say…) Very well said!!

kaylan | 6/24/2009, 5:31 pm EST

Do you all just judge people on the fact that someone once appeared in teen magazines, or do you actually listen to the songs by the songwriters you are insulting and laughing at? My belief is, that you are jealous that you don’t have the fame, or the talent of Jon, Richie and the others either inducted or given an award. That is the only reason people put others down. Too bad you can’t just realize that these people deserve the awards they receive. Just listen to the words of the songs and hear messages that are in the songs. Yes some aren’t serious, they are just fun, party songs, but others have serious messages about homelessness, love and hope. There is even a song about that horrible day in September 2001. Each song by Jon and Richie has meaning and heart. Too bad you are too jealous to realize it. Not many bands last as long as 2 minutes, Bon Jovi has been strong for 26 years. There are very few bands that can say they have been around that long.

I am proud that the Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora have been inducted into this Hall of Fame. It is much more important then the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, because it is for the words they written so well.

For the idiot that compared Bon Jovi to Ratt….can I say BWAAAAAHHHHH!!! that is the funniest thing I’ve ever heard!!! Where are Ratt nowadays by the way? Hmmmmmm???? Stop talking out of your ass!!! Jon and Richie are true songwriters and musicians. And for anyone who doesn’t believe that, forget Living on a Prayer, and It’s my life and all their “hits”. I challenge you to listen to songs like Blood on Blood, These Days, Dry County, Wild is the Wind, Stick to your Guns, Something to Believe in, Damned etc. And for all those who say they aren’t “deserving” of this, well 120,000,000 plus albums and sold out show after sold out show, 25 plus years in the business speak for themselves, hey they must be doing something right. Congrats guys you truly deserve it, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

You are all totally missing the point of a great song and great songwriters. It is their ability to touch someone on an emotional level. Bon Jovi consistently puts out songs that touch people’s lives. Have you ever really listened to the words? Look at the song “Kidnap an Angel”? “Some day I’ll be Saturday nite”? “Blood on Blood”? Maybe some of their songs are a bit too predictable, but there is a depth to their body of work of which most people are unaware. Bravo Jon and Richie….Keep pumping out the best lyrics around….

CONGRATS TO JON & THE BOYS!!

Sandi | 6/29/2009, 10:33 pm EST

CONGRATS TO JON & THE BOYS!! A well deserved award indeed. I’ve been a HUGE Bon Jovi fan since their first album and will be until the end. All you Bon Jovi bashers, what are you doing right now? Are you as successful or as talented?… I’m thinking NO. You’re just bitter idiots sitting in front of your computers with nothing better to do then trash someone’s good fortune. So you don’t like their songs or style of music, or you’re just plain pissed off because you gave the music business a shot and failed miserably because…well..you most likely sucked!! …Well suck it up buttercups, over a million fans can’t be wrong! They didn’t make anyone buy their albums or attend their concerts. They’ve reach this level of success because of their talent and passion for music. AWESOME JOB BON JOVI! LOOKING FORWARD TO THE NEXT ALBUM & TOUR….LOVE YOU GUYS!!

Well said sandi:)but I think there are over one HUNDRED million fans that can’t be wrong( according to the boxset). I will not hate on somebody who write bullshit about Bon Jovi, simply because I don’t get these comments personally. Instead I am laughing at that because no matter what you write or do, you can’t stop me fom loving Them, buying Their albums and finding the meaning of Their songs which help me to get through very hard times and I suppose many people agree with me(over one hundred million). So I wish you luck for achieving as much as They did and still working:)Thank You for good laugh and Have A Nice Day!
