Sting to Return This Fall With “If On a Winter’s Night…”

Sting has confirmed plans to return this fall with a new solo album titled If On a Winter’s Night… on his official Website. The October 27th album, inspired by what Sting calls his favorite season, will feature two original compositions along with carols, lullabies and traditional songs from the British Isles.

“The theme of winter is rich in inspiration and material,” Sting said. “By filtering all of these disparate styles into one album I hope we have created something refreshing and new.” The two Sting songs on the disc are called “Lullaby for an Anxious Child” and “The Hounds of Winter,” and both have been previously released (”Hounds” is the opening track of his 1996 solo album Mercury Falling). Other tracks include the 14th century carol “Gabriel’s Message,” the traditional ballad “The Snow it Melts the Soonest,” Henry Purcell’s “Now Winter Comes Slowly” and an English reworking of Schubert’s “Der Leiermann” now called “Hurdy Gurdy Man.”

Although it’s not being promoted as a typical Christmas album, If On a Winter’s Night… seems primed to grab a slice of the huge holiday sales that albums like Josh Groban’s Noel scored in the past. The record is Sting first since 2006’s Songs from the Labyrinth, which was an album of songs originally composed by John Dowland. Sting’s last album of original material was 2003’s Sacred Love. The Police wrapped their reunion tour in August 2008 at New York’s Madison Square Garden and there’s been no word of future dates for the trio.

And here I was hoping that the Police tour would inject cool back into Sting’s solo music.

Fat chance.

This sounds really lame.

This made news…a Christmas album. Who cares.

This made news.. a Sting album. Who cares.

Jeff | 6/18/2009, 11:26 am EST

How exciting.

He should call it “Winter Music to Go Sterile To”.

Jungleland2 | 6/18/2009, 12:06 pm EST

Mercury falling was the last decent thing Sting has done. He makes it easy to not buy his music

police lover | 6/18/2009, 12:08 pm EST

agreed, entirely LAME

heathen2002 | 6/18/2009, 12:26 pm EST

Yawn…

bee | 6/18/2009, 12:39 pm EST

‘Mercury’ was a classic. Sting is an intelligent, cultured songwriter.Obviously, no appeal in the U.S. Well, the world OUTSIDE the U.S can’t wait!

Jon G. | 6/18/2009, 12:44 pm EST

The Return of Mr. Mellow… like anyone needs THAT. MORE POLICE!!!!!

bee | 6/18/2009, 12:44 pm EST

So I said the U.S has got no taste and my comment gets deleted. Way to go, R.S. It’s true!

Another suggested title:

Soundtrack To Your Prostate Exam

:-)

More Police please

Mucky Fingers | 6/18/2009, 4:31 pm EST

Der Stinglehoffer needs to get back to basics and record something with a little more balls! Haven’t heard anything good from him since Ten Summoner’s Tales.

JRColvin | 6/18/2009, 4:35 pm EST

His website originally said a few weeks ago that this winter-themed album on the classical label would be followed a few months later by a normal Sting solo pop album. Is this not still the plan?

Bob J | 6/18/2009, 5:01 pm EST

Winter sucks.

Jim | 6/18/2009, 5:29 pm EST

I thought I was gonna be happy, but I’ve been stung!

Ben | 6/19/2009, 12:56 am EST

Didn’t he already record Gabriel’s Message back in the eighties?

The Intl | 6/19/2009, 2:19 am EST

Sting, the ultimate in “cool” middle aged boredom. We don’t need his olde english xmas album, phil spector’s masterpiece is still good enough.

Did he learn nothing? | 6/19/2009, 8:41 am EST

STing,

We want you with The Police…not this solo boring stuff!!

Do another Police album will you???

Please keep this guy away from a recording studio uless Andy and Stewart are with him!

Tar | 6/19/2009, 11:34 am EST

@TheIntl: Phil Spector has got other problems just now. Sting has got a problem with many of R.S. readers’ appearing culturelessness LOL. Sting is not Mick Jagger, thanks, never has been, never will be;-)

mothballs | 6/19/2009, 3:48 pm EST

I knew he was going to poop out after The Police Re-onion. How can I be such a fan of a band, and completely not a fan of the singer without them? zzzzzzzzzzzzz…….. At least I went to four Police shows. Aaaaawesome.

PoPo | 6/20/2009, 7:45 pm EST

Let the man age with grace … and keep hopeing for a pathetic Led Zepplin reunion tour of really old geezers or a Rolling Stones and their walkers tour. Time for new rockin’ blood.

Zoompow | 6/27/2009, 9:39 pm EST

Its not like the guy doesn’t have any talent. He’s absolutely amazing when he wants to be.

I don’t get it. He doesn’t have to do another Police album but do something interesting. His early solo stuff wasn’t as good as the Police but at least it was engaging. Songs like Fortress Around Your Heart were excellent.

I’m not sure what’s going on in his head these days. I was really hoping that the Police reunion would revitalize him but this just sounds so lame.

Smarten up man, you’re wasting your talent.

gamma waves | 7/3/2009, 3:13 pm EST

winter songs?

“i hung my head…i hung my head”

Nope | 8/4/2009, 6:57 am EST

Sting is not boring! He’s awesome!
He’s a real storyteller, a true musician. I love every album he made in the past and I’m sure I will enjoy the new one, too. You better listen to his work instead of complaining! Enjoy your old Police albums and shut up.

CJR | 8/26/2009, 7:00 pm EST

When I heard Sacred Love I thought: “Wow, surely it doesn’t get much better than this!”. And then I thought: “Oh dear, that’s probably because it isn’t going to get any better than this! – something tells me Sacred Love could actually signal the end of Sting’s pop song days.

Well, then he gets back with The Police for a reunion/farewell tour (talk about coming full circle!) and then he records two albums of cover versions (albeit high-brow covers) and after seven years there’s no word of any original sting-penned material.

It looks like Sacred Love really was the end of an era. Sad, and a bit mysterious really, but this seems to be something that great artists do later in their careers when they’ve (presumably) said all they needed to say – they start re-interpreting the work of other artists…

It’s not necessarily a bad thing or an indication of being completely washed-up. Look at The great James Taylor’s Christmas album (It’s to die for – I can listen to it any time of year!), or Paul McCartney’s foray into the world of classical music…

Like another contributor said, let Sting age gracefully. Do we really want to see a has-been seventy year old leaping into the air – and breaking a hip? No, of course not. We’re his fans so let’s get behind him and enjoy the ride – even if the ride is getting a little more sedate these days.

D. Blanks | 9/23/2009, 11:18 am EST

These comments are hilarious. But seriously, I can’t wait to hear this album. I’ve been a life-long Sting fan.

Shape of My Heart | 9/28/2009, 7:26 pm EST

You moaners are either all whiny babies who likely whine about everything, or you’re old rock geezers who are stuck in a (big)musical rut. Oh,boo hoo.

Try listening to the album before you slay it! Develop a more musically eclectic ear -you might just surprise yourself.

Luckily,Sting,a natural risk taker, isn’t concerned with pleasing the masses.

Robin Hood | 10/7/2009, 10:09 am EST

Enjoyed these funny comments :-) Let’s hope one day Sting will release another great solo record. Cuz I don’t think these autumn songs will do it for me. (How old is he anyway?)

The Biggest Sting Fan on Earth | 10/9/2009, 8:46 am EST

I just wanted to post as I would consider myself one of the Biggest Police and Sting Fans on this earth. This is the worst album I have ever heard from any artist! Terrible! Nothing else to say!

Fellow Northerner | 10/11/2009, 6:08 am EST

He is doing this as an apology to his home town and region. It’s his way of showing that he feels guilty about what he has said about it in the past. Using local folkies to back him??? Come on man…we are a forgiving bunch really. But not if you keep churning out dross like this

Rolling Stone Reader | 10/13/2009, 11:20 am EST

Rolling Stone please don’t waste our time with this kind of album. It really has nothing to do with Rock and Roll or Pop! After listening to this album I felt like I got a wedgie with midevil tights! Just because someone used to be a rock star, doesn’t mean they should get exposure for taking a dump on a cd!

What the *uck! | 10/13/2009, 2:00 pm EST

Sting has definately lost his marbles! How can you go from The Police to this……..dreadful!

Anonymous | 10/13/2009, 6:13 pm EST

if you don’t like .. why the hell you have to comment? !!! -_-”’

ted | 10/14/2009, 5:49 pm EST

sting is doing it because he loves music. He doesn’t care about $ or popularity anymore. He certainly has the right to do anything he wants

John416 | 10/14/2009, 9:51 pm EST

Ok so sting is nancing around in pink tights and playing the lute style music again! Yes we should all run to embrace him! LOL! Riiiiiiigggggghhhhhhhhht!

Asking Sting to sing folk songs is a bit like asking accountants to look after money. A lot goes missing !

Gforce | 10/25/2009, 3:40 am EST

the pretentious fake Irish vocals on this new album make for an annoying and insulting listen to what could have otherwise been a good album had he used his true accent.
‘The Burning Babe’ is a gem amongst this missed opportunity that will forever be remembered for its fake vocals.

guestandsons UK. | 10/29/2009, 6:07 pm EST

Hard one to swollow.I suspect it may grow on me a bit.Robert Palmer went off on a different direction but at least it was a better direction!

numbereightwire | 10/30/2009, 2:26 am EST

I can’t beleive so many people are negative about this album. people refeering as Stings ‘biggest fans’ are slaying him. Perhaps stating that you are a big fan of sting is another way of saying that they are musicaly narrow minded?
As a musician myself i applaud this album as a masterpiece. If you didnt like it thats fine but just because you have ‘bought every album’ doesn’t mean you have the right to expect the same sound from the artist. Allow him to experiment and explore his tallents.Imagine if all music sounded the same………

David Ylandro | 10/30/2009, 11:36 pm EST

I’ve been listening to Sting’s music since his early days as a rock icon with the Police. He has unquestionably created some of the most interesting and memorable pop songs of our time. His evolution musically and personally from that era through the present day is one of the most interesting and inspiring musical stories in the history of recorded music.

This latest CD, On A Winter’s Night, does take a little getting used to, but reflects a deep understanding of composition and in particular the classical and folk roots of modern English music. Once I listened to it a couple of times, I really enjoyed it. It’s a great CD for quiet days, and reminds of how versatile Sting is as am artist.

To those who are slamming it mercilessly, I would say: stop watching violent video games all night, quit eating junk food and cheap drugs, take your ADHD medication and otherwise clean yourselves up; grow up and develop some talent, if that’s possible. Once you learn self-discipline and a skill, you will find you have much less anger and maybe you can make some kind of real contribution to the world.

Like Sting has.

Katanya | 10/31/2009, 12:46 am EST

I have never bought a Sting/Police CD that didn’t please my soul, I love his Music regardless, His work are as original as his thoughts, unique ans essential in there own way and they pull out all the emotions of the heart that is necessary for one to feel, btw he Rocked on Letterman the other night! I hope he will stick around longer to make more music!

When the hell | 10/31/2009, 2:33 am EST

Sting, totally out of ideas, voice shot and doing a bland boring Christmas album. Zzzzz.

TC | 10/31/2009, 12:10 pm EST

If you can’t listen to Its Alright For You, Sychronicity II, Fortress Around Your Heart, Ghost Story, a John Dowland cover song, Sting singing an Old English folk song, and then switch back to Bring on the Night, then you’re not a true Sting fan. So keep you’re opinions to yourself, b/c TRUE Sting fans dont want to hear from you. Cant wait for If On A Winter’s Night!

TC No Choice! | 11/2/2009, 8:59 am EST

True Sting fans don’t have a choice Sting Sucks now and that is the overwhelming majority of these posts. Don’t read them if you don’t like it…….Stings glory days are behind him now!

Brian B | 11/2/2009, 9:14 am EST

Just heard SOUL CAKE and it’s a very nice tune.

Fan | 11/2/2009, 3:11 pm EST

It’s great music – I enjoyed it very much. Sting goes to the right direction – not like sad old rock stars who keep repeating themselves and acting like teenagers in the body of retired person.

Lyn | 11/2/2009, 5:51 pm EST

Too many negative people on this post. Why don’t you immature bloggers realize long time performers do change their spots as they age, as they desire to experiment. The negative bloggers are so boring and predictable. Unlike Sting, who likes to change directions.

Sting Fan | 11/3/2009, 5:30 am EST

I agree Lyn! If this lot don’t stop slagging this album, we’ll never be able to sell our copies on Ebay!

Irish Folk Lover | 11/3/2009, 10:58 am EST

Sting should stick to his Pop and Rock. His Vocals on this are strained and do no approach an authentic reproduction of these songs or the dialect of the selctions. Very poor offering for a true folk purist.

Food for Thought! | 11/3/2009, 10:59 am EST

Sting it has come time to retire!

Jah | 11/4/2009, 12:57 am EST

I am a fan of sting but not a fan of this album. I will miss him I will listen to his old stuff, goodbye my old friend I will let you sit under a tree and play old folk songs for yourself because you didn’t make this album for me.Gordon Summner made that album not Sting! I never had to listen to his old stuff 2 or 3 times to like it come on Lets be real it SUCKS!!!

Stung by Sting | 11/4/2009, 10:11 am EST

With a name like Sting you just expect the thing to rock……..It’s Sting allright! It’s Stinging the hell out of my ear drums. I’ve been Stung by Sting for the last time, he Stinks!

Bring on the Rock! | 11/8/2009, 9:04 pm EST

After a project like this one you only have one place left to go, and that is back to The Police. Heard some of the album after waiting with excitement and then horrified when I finally heard it. Depressed me for real. This sounded like the slushy part of winter, not the happy stuff.
