Taylor Swift Raps With T-Pain, Rocks With Def Leppard At CMTs

6/17/09, 9:06 am EST

T-Swizzy, or Taylor Swift as she’s occasionally called, was the star of last night’s CMT Music Awards in Nashville, winning two trophies, performing with Def Leppard and making her rap debut with a little help from T-Pain. The “Thug Story” video — a clip worthy of a Saturday Night Live Digital Short — that opened the show saw T-Swizzy poking fun at her good-girl image by rhyming, “I’m so gangsta, you can find me baking cookies at night/You out clubbin’, but I just made Caramel Delight.” Other qualities that make our recent cover star a “thug”: her ability to knit and the fact that she still lives with her parents. Swift reportedly wrote the lyrics for the track, with T-Pain contributing his trademark (and in this case, hilarious) Auto-Tune harmonies.

(Check out photos of Swift, Def Leppard, Kid Rock and more onstage and backstage at the CMTs.)

Brad Paisley led the winners’ list with three awards, and Swift took home both Video of the Year and Female Video of the Year for “Love Story” from her blockbuster 2008 disc Fearless. Kid Rock also walked off with a trophy, scoring the “Wide Open Country video buckle” for “All Summer Long.” Still, it was Swift who owned the night, taking the stage twice more before event ended. Midway through the ceremony, Swift returned to perform her hit “You Belong To Me,” and she was back again to close out the show with her heroes, Def Leppard.

Swift, who previously collaborated with Def Leppard on a Crossroads special, reiterated her love of the band during one of her acceptance speeches: “I want to thank CMT for letting me live so many of my dreams this year. I got to sing with my heroes. Def Leppard, I love you guys so much.” When the band took the stage, Swift grabbed the microphone, fist-bumped frontman Joe Elliott and took the lead on a rendition of their barroom classic “Pour Some Sugar On Me.”

That’s not country music. Rap will never be country. Save it for MTV and keep rap away from country music.

Mike | 6/17/2009, 10:29 am EST

What the hell? This is one of the reasons I will not waste anymore of my time on these now-pointless awards shows. Taylor Swift is not all that talented anyway. If she were, she wouldn’t need crap like this. And modern rap sucks. Period. It has no place in music history, much less country. It’s all about getting laid. That’s all they can ‘rap’ about anymore. TS should be ashamed of herself for connecting herself with this garbage. But this is what happens with a bunch of NY and LA lawyers in accountants running Nashville.

MrHate | 6/17/2009, 10:39 am EST

When you mix Country and Rap what do you get? CRAP, and 3/4 of it comes from Rap. Blah and Phooey.

M. | 6/17/2009, 10:45 am EST

Absolute garbage, no matter what the purpose for this was it sucks!

me | 6/17/2009, 11:00 am EST

fail

D. Smith | 6/17/2009, 11:02 am EST

Doesn’t CMT stand for Country Music Television? Since when is RAP country? It’s not even close to being country. She should quit country and go to MTV is she wants to RAP. Yuck…

Robert | 6/17/2009, 11:06 am EST

I admit when I first heard of this pairing I thought, HUH? But it’s 100% fun.

Good for both of them for trying something different.

E. Michaels | 6/17/2009, 11:09 am EST

Taylor Swift evidently wants to change to RAP and be a thug… She’s not the same to me anymore after hearing her belt out a RAP song. She must be stupid to do it on a country stage that is awarding country singers…what an insult!

B. Coffers | 6/17/2009, 11:12 am EST

Taylor Swift – - what were you thinking? Where’s your country roots? Do you want to change to RAP? Go for it. You’re good at it, but it’s totally wrong to do it on a COUNTRY AWARD SHOW….

D. Phillips | 6/17/2009, 11:16 am EST

Country music is not country music any more. So very sad. But it will come back. Once those people that are trying to kill the country sound get old, they will come back to country – - if they don’t die first. The old country sound…that’s what’s GOOD and will endure forever….Taylor Swift, quit acting stupid and promote/sing country….

Anonymous | 6/17/2009, 11:39 am EST

wow people need to CALM DOWN. it was meant as a fucking joke. man some of yall just have no humor what so ever! take a chill pill!

Jessica | 6/17/2009, 11:42 am EST

Ok so if you WATCHED the CMT awards you would know that this rap video was a JOKE!! Not something to be taken seriously, in the same short she was beamed aboard the Star Trek ship and became a Pro NFL player…come on people she doesn’t want to be a rapper..she did this for an intro to the show.

K. Causey | 6/17/2009, 11:44 am EST

Geeze people, get over yourselves. It’s not like she wants to be some thugged out gangster. She was just having a little fun. She rapped, a FUNNY rap. The B-52’s sang with Sugarland. They are most definitely not country. Should they of sang? Yes. Stop over-analyzing everything she does.

brenda | 6/17/2009, 11:45 am EST

The rap video was a joke and an extremely well done joke at that! It was a very funny send-up of Taylor Swifts song Love Story and her own reputation as a sweet young girl. Great job Taylor.

RhythmAce | 6/17/2009, 11:45 am EST

I wholeheartedly agree with D. Phillips. What is marketed as “Country” music is nothing but watered down recycled Rock and Roll. Aside from Dwight Yoakam, George Strait, and a handful of others true Country Music is dead. And to Taylor Swift: WTF are/were you thinking? Geezus.

Pencil Neck Geek | 6/17/2009, 11:49 am EST

If Johnny Cash were to come back from the grave, the first thing I would like to see him do would be to knock that ball cap off of Taylor Swift’s head. She looks so stupid and I guess looks mean everything in this instance.

Kevin the Robot | 6/17/2009, 11:51 am EST

Isn’t ‘Pour Some Sugar On Me’ an ode to oral sex? Do you think she knows that?

spinderella | 6/17/2009, 11:57 am EST

RE-lax. its supposed to be funny, not her introduction into a new genre. please.

it is definitely a reminder of the natalie portman skit on SNL a few years back though. check it!

B. Cox | 6/17/2009, 12:08 pm EST

A joke? What was she joking about? If it is a joke, then I just don’t get it. It was stupid. Why doesn’t she JOKE on MTV and sing country on a RAP award show? Again, it was a stupid joke. And FYI – - I “did” watch the award show and failed to catch the JOKE…..seems like I wasn’t the only one….

spinderella | 6/17/2009, 12:17 pm EST

really b.cox? REALLY? failing to catch the joke here is just a huge miss on your behalf. something that was supposed to be funny seems to have brought out the jaded ‘tude hasn’t it?

i don’t even like country music and taylor swift is actually really talented in my opinion.

why don’t you diss her awesome introduction to the small screen with her CSI cameo too… GAWD!

B. Cox | 6/17/2009, 12:29 pm EST

I like Taylor Swift and I agree she is talented. I just don’t see a place for RAP on a country music award show – - even as a “joke”. She did a good job with the RAP, but all it did was take up a spot when we could have been listening to some good country music, which is what I wanted to listen to…when I tune in to country music, I want to hear country music. Save the rap for David Letterman or MTV, not when we’re promoting country music awards.

Johnny's $tash | 6/17/2009, 12:57 pm EST

Maybe after Taylor Swift gets knocked up, loses her fortune, and ends up suckin’ d***s in the trailer park for meth, she can call herself “country”. And Brad Paisley needs to stick to his WV roots and quit singing songs about sweet love, marriage, babies and all that other fake sh**.

Kool EDD | 6/17/2009, 1:06 pm EST

Taylor hot in dem mini skirts, yo’.

countrydude | 6/17/2009, 1:11 pm EST

well i 4 one think taylor swift will do great in whatever line of entertainment she wants i loved the rap video with t-pain she can do it all and shes focused on whatever she does, at least shes not like britney spears or that lohan lesbian, taylor swift has her prororities in plane thank god.

countrydude | 6/17/2009, 1:15 pm EST

i agree with most of u on here leave taylor swift along geeezzz shes only 19 shes just having some fun dont make her out the next britney or lindsey dang yall the girls got talent n brains to boot, what about kid rock hell he’s rap too throw off on him he cussess and all in his videos and evens raps or sings about sex lighted up folks geez louzy.

KentuckyGirl | 6/17/2009, 1:18 pm EST

What’s country now-a-days anyway? Stuff on the billboards are composed of a sound that is stuck between late 90’s soft rock and r&b rhythm – with maybe some twang and over exaggerated “country” slurring of words. Come on…those who say TS is really something country needs to pull out grandma and grandpas records and have a listen.

True country music, as with all good music – has no lines, no limitations. The power of story telling, heart and talent shines through.

And this was a spoof – with a young country star who has pretty weak chops but is a pleasantely talented POP-COUNTRY entertainer.

There are collaborations between genres all the time – Mr. Faith Hill even did a nice slow jam with rapper Nelly a few years back and it was good.

Loretta worked with Jack White and she got a grammy. If rap has nothing to do with country – it’s because the IMAGE has nothing to do with what the image of country music has been designated to be for people now.

If people can’t even take that…they need to take off that Kenny Chesney cowboy hat and look straight in the mirror and soberly ask themselves what life is all about and whether or not they truly exist…

LMT | 6/17/2009, 1:19 pm EST

Some of you guys need to quit being so anal and get a sense of humor. If you didn’t like her little skit then you should have turned the channel douche bags.

Taylor you were effin hilarious… if its on iTunes ill buy that!

Papillon | 6/17/2009, 1:19 pm EST

Taylor Swift cannot sing. She is an entertainer. Country music is supposed to be about the rural people in this society; not collaborating with as many other genres as possible to water it down and make it appealing to the hopeless, stupid American public. I attended the CMTs last night as a seat-filler and I was extremely annoyed and disgusted at the generic POP I had to listen to. I am from rural America originally and those people shake their heads at the lack of talent, the Las Vegas hooker look of the women, and the lack of respect for all things COUNTRY.

guest | 6/17/2009, 1:30 pm EST

Here’s how whether or not you liked the song is going to break down:

over 30, no higher or advanced degrees — hate it

over 30, higher and/or advanced degrees — love it (if you voted for obama) OR hate it (if you voted for mccain).

under 30 — love it. degrees don’t matter as this assumes you are somewhat hip and aware of the rap industry’s self-deprecating and parody style in the video.

katie mcnoy | 6/17/2009, 1:33 pm EST

I love taylor swift!
She always inspires me no matter what she does.
I thnk it’s great that she did this just to show everyone how diverse she can be!
p.s.
I found this song that sounds taylorish.
Does anyone know who sings it?

LoJo | 6/17/2009, 1:34 pm EST

Rap shouldnt be used for an intro to a country award show; the motivation is irrelevant. I grew up listening to Hank, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, etc. Folks, this is country music. It has a raw edge to it; it is RURAL. it is not overproduced or POP. It’s about reaching the rural people of America with music, not selling records to a melting pot of other genre lovers. It shows that our society is becoming stupid. Generic, cheap, and over-stimulating is all America wants. It’s very sad. But, luckily, there are still a few people left who truly appreciate real art.

rS1234 | 6/17/2009, 2:01 pm EST

What are you doing Rolling Stone, why are you covering Taylor Swift? This is pretty pathetic, have you ever heard of Journalistic integrity? Let’s cover artists with real talent, not sell out so a couple thousand tweens will buy the magazine once. THIS IS PATHETIC!!!!

Rabbitbunny | 6/17/2009, 2:01 pm EST

Go Taylor! You belong to the institute of a rock class called
No Surrender, where Bruce Springsteen wrote “We busted out of class-had to get away from the fools/We learned more from
a three minute record than we ever learned in school.” You also might follow in Madonna’s footsteps to the tune of Don’t Tell Me when she wrote “Tell me love isn’t true/It’s just something that we do
-Tell me everything I’m not but please don’t tell me to stop.
Don’t ever tell me to stop.” And since the British Cats in Def Leppard are your heroes, Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad?,
Two Steps Behind, Miss You in a Heartbeat and When Love and Hate Collide are four beautiful
country rock ballads from England
-you were born to sing them. Like Steve, Waylon, Ronnie and
Hank Sr., you are responsible for obliterating the lines between country and rock. Good on you, Lady Swift! Always follow your dream, rock hard and be a brilliant country girl. Taylor,
You Rock!

ashley | 6/17/2009, 2:42 pm EST

i thought it was so funny and absolutely loved it! people are just trashing her cause they are most likely jealous! anyone can do anything! it was awesome!

Anonymous | 6/17/2009, 2:46 pm EST

Wow, Seriously people Calm Down. Yes it was a country award show but the audience enjoyed it, the other artist were not insulted. Not a big deal. Take some time to enjoy life-Laugh a little! Taylor Swift had fun and did a great job! No, she will not be a big rap star but a great artist can sing well in multiple genres and that’s just what she accomplished. She’s open to diversity and that is a GREAT thing especially for an entertainer! She performed on an award show because she has amazing talent and people much more qualified than any of us recognized that and gave her a spot on the show. : )

B.B | 6/17/2009, 3:00 pm EST

I dont see why people RE MAKING such a big deal out of this her RAP WAS AWSOME and just for fun its not really going to become country it was just all for fun
Taylor swift is my idol i love her she is awsome. IT WAS JUST FOR FUN SO GET OVER IT!

crystal | 6/17/2009, 3:02 pm EST

markeeee | 6/17/2009, 3:10 pm EST

I am a 45 year old male who would list Zep, Stones, G’n'R and Iron Maiden as favorites, with Steve Earle as a country fave. Taylor Swift? She was great on the award show and is great in general. Those dissing her clearly don’t know about her. She writes her own tunes (and from what i can see she writes about what she knows and writes from the heart) and plays her own guitar. in other words, she is a musician and a songwriter. She was not manufactured like Britany but rather rose up through diehard fan support. I may not listen to her music, but i can recognize talent when i see it. I love Def Leppard and think no less of them for playing with her. in fact, i bet she gave them a kick in the ass as she kinda blew them off the stage! and how can you not like a girl of 19 aware enough to mock her own image and to do it in such a public way. Britany never would have done that knowingly, her handlers would have vetoed the move. Taylor is doing her own thing and having fun, and that is a big part of what real music is all about.

martyjt | 6/17/2009, 4:35 pm EST

This show was an embarrassment. Johnny Cash is rolling over in his grave. There was nary a trace of a solid vocal performance in the entire show. I know it was for the “fans”, but I’ve never seen so many sellouts in one room. Very cumbersome to watch.

Anonymous | 6/17/2009, 5:29 pm EST

Breathe kid. Johnny Cash obviously knew good music so he would appreciate these artists. He’s probably laughing that ya’ll think any different.

The rap wasn’t *meant* to be country. I guess they were trying to make Star Trek country too?

It was a joke, and it was funny.

Alex | 6/17/2009, 6:50 pm EST

I love Taylor Swift, she is so funny. This is so hysterical, I personally think it’s awesome that she actually did a rap with T-Pain, not going against what everyone else is saying, I just think it’s really funny. I’m not sure if it was meant to be a joke, from the looks of it it was meant to be, but I think it’s hilarious.

Di'siaeh | 6/17/2009, 7:28 pm EST

As if rap wants to be country. Lol. I just love the fact it made some people mad. I love EVERYTHING that white people overreact to. Makes for good blog fodder.

Devon | 6/17/2009, 9:39 pm EST

Guys its a joke. seriously. i have been to 3 of her concerts, and trusdt me its a joke. im not very much a fan of her as i used to be. now im into metallica, iron maiden, guns, van halen, beatles, journey ect. but she isnt bad its a joke. i think its super cute. i mean “dont wanna fight me, in me xtra small white tee3″ LOL its so cute

Susan Jones | 6/17/2009, 10:44 pm EST

I think the CMT award show with Taylor Swift and Def Leppard was sad. I see a young talent just trying to hard now that stardom has come…I felt like she was in her bedroom jumping around, throwing her hair about trying to look like a rock star and she really made a fool out of herself.
It was a pajama party!
I hope the producers/record labels do not make her into something she is not.
That part of the show was bordering on pathetic.

Anonymous | 6/18/2009, 10:03 am EST

It was a Joke Woman. Calm yourself. She’s not trying to be something else, she’s enjoying life like everyone should.

sam | 6/18/2009, 2:05 pm EST

taylor swift suckssss

J Loveland | 6/18/2009, 2:28 pm EST

First off, Taylor Swift, Def Leopard, and T-Pain are not country music. They are all pop artists. Hank Williams is rolling over in his grave as I type this comment. Country music has lost its roots and its soul to music industry and this is yet another example of how shitty pop country is. Jokes or not, these artists give country music a bad name. It is all about money and fame, not being real and writing music from the soul, or the country. I didn’t see Hank 3, Joey Alcorn, or JB Beverly nominated for any awards. Retards.

J Loveland | 6/18/2009, 2:33 pm EST

What has seven arms and sucks? Def Leopard

Sarah | 6/18/2009, 4:25 pm EST

How f*ckin stupid.

fan of both | 6/18/2009, 5:13 pm EST

I love both Taylor Swift and Def Leppard…but the 2 together was terrible…if you noticed…she really didn’t sing that much because she over powered their voices with hers. I do think she looked a little trashy up there dancing around with 40-50 year old men. I would rather have seen them sing this great classic with an older performer.

mike | 6/18/2009, 9:08 pm EST

…really lame.

auramac | 6/19/2009, 1:23 am EST

I think she’s great- talented, gorgeous, good role model. She’s a force to be reckoned with, it’ll be interesting to hear what she’s doing in a few years.

Bailey Rae | 6/19/2009, 4:06 pm EST

Taylor Swift.. or T-Swizzle as yall call it is friggin awesum and i feel tht it shood be played on all the local rap radio stations everywhere!! hehe i love taylor swift and t-swizzle
=]

Vicki | 6/19/2009, 9:10 pm EST

You that say, “C’mom guys it was a joke” Well, yeah but that joke absolutely did NOT belong on a Country awards program. It was disrespectful. She should use that on her tour as an opening or something. That’s where it belongs. She’s 19 about to turn 35. She brainy, business savvy and gifted in songwriting. But CMT which we found out today is partners with her recording company which explains how no country artist before no matter how big they were “remember Faith?”, has opened a show, played in the show and closed the show with an atrociously out of tune something. It was Taylor thrown down our throats and it’s OVERKILL people. Those of us who like many country stars are really getting turned off by the Taylor Machine.

RBT | 6/19/2009, 10:25 pm EST

For those of you who think that her “Gansta Rap” was as joke, ask any cop if they think that gangsters and thugs are funny. There are millions of young girls who look at TS as a role model. As adults, we may get it as a joke, but she is showing kids that being a “gansta girl” is cool. And before you start calling me a racist, gangsters come in all races, but the lifestyle is the same, criminals. I hope you thought it was funny, TS, I didn’t.

B | 6/20/2009, 1:49 am EST

WTF why is everyone giving Taylor such a hard time. This was FUNNY, not an attempt at a career change. You do not have to watch the video. And for everyone out there who is bashing the “sound” of country because it has changed, blame yourself. You are the ones who listen to it and buy the albums. If all the “hard core” country people got together they can change the sound of what is produced by simply changing YOUR buying habits. Most of yall have no clue what it is to be country anyway.

hahaig | 6/20/2009, 5:05 am EST

Truly gifted artists experiment with their media. They look for new ways to push the envelope. They keep art and artists alive and vital and relevant. It helps them interpret life in more and more exciting ways. Often, our most genius artists are ridiculed by those who take great comfort in the familiar and traditional, or by jealous rivals. It isn’t until much later that their contributions to their genre are finally recognized and respected. I’m so excited that CMT is showcasing new ways of working with the genre that involve interdisciplinary crossovers — including those that involve humor. Country will always be country with its core and its edges. Thank you, Taylor, for using your gifts so fearlessly. You contribute so much to the arts and to all of us whose lives are richer for it. Thank you CMT for daring to try different things that highlight what is both new and traditional and that keeps art alive and not fossilized. And thank you to all the artists who are willing to take chances and risks to be creative.

JD | 6/20/2009, 10:07 am EST

Are you people serious? Come on, it was a joke. It was meant to be funny, and I think most of the audience thought it was. Seriously, it’s not a big deal and not worth getting angry over. I personally thought it was a great way to open the show.

I also love how Taylor isn’t talented. That may be your opinion but logic points to signs that she is very talented. She’s sold the most albums so far this year and most if not all of her concerts are sold out including the one in New York which sold out in 1 minute and the one in LA which sold in 2 minutes.

Unknown | 6/21/2009, 5:35 pm EST

She just wanted to try something new. She can do what ever she wants. I enjoyed the video, I’m sure she loved performing it. If you don’t like what she did, then don’t be one of her fans. A fan is suppose to support who they like. If you don’t support her actions or respect them, don’t be a fan of her then. I love her and I don’t see her decision to try rapping just for fun as anything against country music. I think many bands have tried different types of genera. Plain White T’s is suppose to be a Rock band, but their song “Hey There Delilah” has some more smooth country music style feel to it. So just because Taylor wanted to try something new, it doesn’t me she is not a country singer anymore. So those of you who denounce her, shouldn’t be her fan.

Secret Identity | 6/21/2009, 5:46 pm EST

RBT,

#1: No one said that her rap was “Gangsta Rap”
#2: Start spelling correctly “Gansta” is not a word.
#3: I highly doubt the listener to her music are kids who are like 8.Most of her youth listeners are teens who have been exposed already to Rap. And I bet you that almost everyone who listens to music has at least listen to rap once. Or else how would they know they like country more than rap?
#4: Her “Rap” (Which isn’t even Gangster) is not sold as a single.
#5: You say that girls are going to think gangsters are cool because she say one rap song. I bet you that they are smarter than you and that they know what Gangsters are like. Your stereotype that all little kids who watch gangsters are going to think gangsters are cool is majorly wrong. Kids are smarter than you think, they know how a gangster is like, and they know what happens to gangsters.

Secret Identity | 6/21/2009, 5:48 pm EST

Also RBT,you clearly have not seen the lyrics to her song, it makes no reference to crime, drugs, and sex.

Lala | 6/21/2009, 7:19 pm EST

I don’t think that anyone who commented this get the point. HELLO! She won’t really get into rap, people, it was for the opening number. It was funny, and if you would listened to the “thug story” lyrics, maybe you could understand.

Lala | 6/21/2009, 7:19 pm EST

I don’t think that anyone who commented this get the point. HELLO! She won’t really get into rap, people, it was for the opening number. It was funny, and if you would listen to the “thug story” lyrics, maybe you could understand.

RBT | 6/22/2009, 1:31 am EST

Secret Identity,

Excuse my spelling. You say that there is no reference to drugs, crime or sex. What then does it mean when T-Pain says ” I’m on a boat” His lyrics, F**k land, I’m on a boat, motherf**ker, read the rest of the lyrics. How about “Shorty I’m a make ya” “Shorty Imma take ya”. That has nothing to do with sex? Let’s talk about crime. She said “still live with my parents but I’m still a thug” What is a thug? Thug, a person, often a criminal, who treats others violently and roughly, especially for hire. Often a member of a gang, as an enforcer in organized crime. The only thing that TS left out was drugs. T-Pain does not leave out sex, drugs or crime in his songs. You picked a great guy to rap with TS. Check out his lyrics.

E. Malave Jr. | 6/22/2009, 2:43 am EST

Have some of you defenders of Country Music ever listened to country music? It is depressing. She was probably bored and did something different as a provocative joke to bring attention to the show. Whether you liked it or not you are writing about it so the plan worked. Do you really believe most of the north (cuz many of y’all still believe we are separated at the Mason-Dixon) would even know there was a CMT award show last week without this video? Also, Country ain’t all that non-gansta-between the revenge songs (”A Boy Named Sue”,”Before He Cheats”, “Goodbye Earl”), and it being okay to hit women until “Last One to Know (1987!),” or just straight violence: Clapton’s “I Shot The Sheriff”(1974) Guthrie’s “Pretty Boy Floyd”(1987), Cash’s “Folson Prison Blues” (1968). Get over it-the world will be better place.

anon. | 6/22/2009, 11:59 pm EST

This was a joke and anyone who thinks otherwise is obviously overthinking this. The lyrics were joking around about how she’s the complete opposite of everything hard-core rap music talks about..but she’s JOKINGLY attempting it to bring attention to the CMT awards and get it started with a bang.

Who Cares | 6/23/2009, 1:58 pm EST

How is this any different from what Wierd Al Yankovic did in the 80’s? It’s just a parody, folks.

Maria | 6/24/2009, 9:26 am EST

If there is one thing that won’t change, it is Taylor Swift’s decision to rap “Thug Story”. Your post that complain about her will do nothing towards her decision, cause there are more fans supporting her than you guys who condemn her.
I don’t know about you but last time I checked, a lot of people, especially teens, liked Eminem and Akon so does that mean all of those teens are going to become gangsters? More of Eminem’s fans don’t become gangsters. You people who complain about Taylor Swift’s rap should not be her fan. If you guys really like her, stop complaining about what she do, she can do whatever she wants. Also, there are more people in the world and on this post that think her rap is funny than there are people who think she shouldn’t have done it. Sorry but I think you guys who complain about her rap is winning a HUGE loosing battle. Maybe you should see that most of the people who listen to country think it was funny, and so do most the people who like rock and other genres. So stop your complaining. If you don’t like it, don’t be her fan.

Well, personally, it’s a big disappointment, we are a Taylor Swift family, raising a daughter in todays day and age is tough. Pop culture jams so much crap down a kids throat, Taylor was a beacon of light in a pretty bad world.

She still is, but this was a disappointment.

We don’t have many places to go nowdays for decency. NASCAR and country music are two places that havn’t been pulled into the ghetto culture. Those who profit from those should never forget who it is that is their bread and butter.

LtColDaddy | 6/29/2009, 5:29 pm EST

Although it did serve a nice purpose. When my daughter screamed out “EWWWWWWW, what’s wrong with Taylor” I knew my efforts as a father were working at least.

Taylors talent, very good. It doesn’t matter how many decibles at what note she can carry, she sounds good. But it’s about more than that, with everything the former child stars are into, all those little girls who have been let down, Taylor stands for something, gives a lot of girls something to hold on to. An example. A green light to just “be good” and it’s OK.

Not saying Taylor still isn’t all of that, but the video just isn’t our cup of tea.

What a bunch of humorless, backwater hicks. It was obviously a joke.

Guy From QC | 7/2/2009, 2:16 am EST

Haha, this is so funny to see how can people can be so weird to react like that. This is obviously a joke. Anyway.

You guys are comedy…RBT, you obviously didn’t pay any attention to the lyrics.

“Singer turned rapper/Shawty Imma make ya”

Definition: I’m going to make Taylor Swift the singer into a rapper

“Straight to the top yo/Shawty Imma take ya”

Definition: I’m going to take Taylor Swift to the top (i.e. make her even more popular).

Nothing to do with sex there.

T-Pain didn’t sing the lyrics that you quote for “On A Boat”. The two dudes from SNL did. Much like Thug Story, On A Boat is a parody. The guys from SNL choose to use profanity in excess.

“F*ck land I’m on a boat motherf*cker”

Definition: I prefer to be on a boat than on land.

“F*ck trees I climb buoys motherf*cker”

Definition: I, once again, prefer to do something that is water related.

And not to simply pick on RBT, but everyone who has an issue with this obvious joke/parody that both Taylor and T-Pain were having fun with, please go down to the local WalMart and buy a sense of humor.

Hello to all those who are against this,
Please remove that stick up your ass for two seconds so we can be logical about this.
Obviously, she was trying to convert all teen girls to ‘thug life’. I myself am a teenage girl, and this exposure to this video had me thinking that i need to alter my way of life, and make it start revolving around cash money and clubs. And all this is definitely Taylor Swift’s fault.
I think I’ll just forget all of her other work, because she is now obviously a gangster.
(couldnt even type that with a straight face..haha)
And clearly,
rap is crap.

Now a view into reality.
I bet all of you commenting negatively are adults, mere adults with a serious outlook on the world. I agree with the opinion that rap LYRICS these days are very unnecessarily explicit, however rap it self is an art and i dare all of you to look in the mirror and try it. Its also a form of passion for many people, and ‘gangstas’ or not..they are people. This is what gives them passion, and its what they love to do. Some of you like cats, and some of you might fancy knitting, or whatever.
But please..do the world a favor and TRY NOT TO BE SO SERIOUS. LET LOOSE. you dont come out alive anyway :)
again, this is a 16 year old girl speaking. Taylor Swift was trying to make people laugh,
not morph in to a rapper known as T Swizzy.
If anything,
she was making fun of rap.
But please, for the children of america, let loose, and dont be so crazy.

john | 9/27/2009, 11:34 am EST

it was okay. but i would be very angry if i was a country music fan who tuned in to hear country music and heard this. she really wasn’t that good and her voice was annoying. thumbs down for associating herself with rappers. and for the record, i love rap.
