Contrary to popular belief, churning out a double album isn’t easy, the Flaming Lips‘ Wayne Coyne tells the BBC’s 6 Music blog. Nailing down a track list has been hard, he says, “Because we want to go in so many strange directions and sometimes we’re unfocused and sometimes we’re just so wishy-washy.” The two-disc set is due in September, and though song names and a track order have yet to be determined, Coyne is ready to wrap up the follow-up to 2006’s At War With The Mystics: “I think it must be like being a cook in the kitchen you’re preparing this great thing but by the time it’s ready you’re sick of it because you’ve been smelling it, you’ve got it in your hair and in your fingers and all that.” Of course, a two-disc set isn’t the most ambitious project the Lips have tackled: in 1997 they released Zaireeka, four albums meant to be played simultaneously. The Lips most recently recorded a cover of Madonna’s “Borderline” and had “Do You Realize???” named Oklahoma’s official rock song.

Can’t wait for new Lips. Hope its in Surround!
Time to update their website, too – when it first came out it was cool and interactive – one of the best. With a few exceptions, it has been pretty much stuck in the year ~2001 as far as form, content and updates.

Yes! I cannot waiiiiit! And as for the website, they’ll probably redo it around the time the album comes out. Or at least that’d be nice.

I love the Lips… but At War With the Mystics was a bit mediocre. It seems like their persona has out grown their music.

I was fortunate to see the Lips perform last week in Los Angeles. The new songs are just wonderful. I can’t wait for the new album. Talk about getting better with age.

At War With the Mystics was a great album. Hardly mediocre unless it’s based on a godlike scale. I’ve already heard some of the new stuff in concert and it’s good, can’t wait for the new album.

Now that they’re rich and famous, why do they stay in Oklahoma? What a hellhole.

I hope this album is more like metallic or transmissions. I also felt “at war…” was weak in comparison to the rest of there albums.
