Breaking: Amazing Baby

6/17/09, 3:38 pm EST

Who: A Brooklyn-based quintet who broke out at this year’s SXSW on the strength of their free debut EP The Infinite Fucking Cross who have since gone on to open for Cold War Kids and MGMT. Bummed with their jobs working as ringtone designers, Will Roan and Simon O’Connor initially formed Amazing Baby as something to do after hours. “We would just sit around getting really wasted and work on songs,” says Roan. “We didn’t think we’d be very popular.”

Sounds Like: On their stunning debut album Rewild (out this month), Amazing Baby deliver tunes that are at times thoroughly vintage and refreshingly futuristic: “The Narwhal” sounds like Led Zeppelin at their druggiest and most mystical; “Invisible Place” soars and swoops like Pink Floyd’s “Echoes” and “Kankra” builds into such an anthemic frenzy, you’ll be oozing serotonin for days. The crew also have a wonky sense of humor, especially on tunes like the scuzzed-out jam “Smoke Bros,” which features stoner-appropriate ruminations like “She protects her animals/ We are starving cannibals.” “We’re all like super emotional screwed up dudes,” says Roan. “It’s not all about raging songs — we’ve got a pretty strong sense of musical aesthetics, even if our lyrics are totally ridiculous sometimes.”

Vital Stats:

• Amazing Baby are part of Brooklyn’s crew of neo-psychedelic bands, which also includes MGMT and Chairlift. In fact, O’Connor used to room with MGMT’s Ben Goldwasser at Wesleyan. “We’ve all slept with the same girls,” says Roan. “It’s funny, because when I was first introduced to Ben, I was told his name was ‘Bano.’ I thought that’s what his name was, but it turns out it’s some nickname for him. Wesleyan has like a bro-thing going on there and that’s what they called him. He told me he didn’t like being called that only recently. I felt so bad about that for a while.”

• During a recent gig on Halloween with MGMT, Amazing Baby discovered they had an unlikely fan: Bill Murray, who was hanging out at the gig and stuck around to chat with the band afterwards. “We hung out with him all night,” says Roan. “We were about to go on tour in Europe and he told us all about Ireland. That was so cool.”

• Amazing Baby may be relative newcomers over here — but they’ve gained quite a fanbase lady fans in Europe. “We were partying in Glasgow after a show and I ended up sampling some of the local pharmaceuticals and hooking up with a couple of girls,” says Roan. “Actually, I’m just kidding. We have fans that are strange middle-aged men that have shown up to our hotels. That’s about as far as we get with groupies.”

WORST BAND EVER. TERRIBLE.

Cari Vegas | 6/20/2009, 5:48 pm EST

Groovy! I checked out their Myspace page and detected a bit of Wolfmother flavor in their other songs and that’s alright by me. Totally love it!

Happy Jack | 6/21/2009, 12:09 pm EST

I just checked out their myspace too. I hear a mix of shoegazer and Oasis. Both styles of music I wish were forgotten and annulled by now!

Moumouche | 6/21/2009, 12:09 pm EST

I am an old lady but I love your music and wish you more and more success.

Zack | 6/21/2009, 12:11 pm EST

No one in New York likes this band. This is another scam by rich kids to avoid paying their dues as musicians for MTV fake fame. Hope your 15 minutes are fun! That;s more than this band deserves.

Anonymous | 6/21/2009, 12:18 pm EST

OMG, This is terrible! Sounds like Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd??? Do you write this stuff before you hear the band? There couldn’t be anything farther from the truth! They sound like a bad version of MGMT. Led Zeppelin??? people really don’t read anymore, do they!

Jenny | 6/21/2009, 2:56 pm EST

Who? Amazing Crap!

Anonymous | 6/21/2009, 7:16 pm EST

This is horribly uncreative music! Where are the songs? there are no songs. The singer looks like Creed too.

Anonymous | 6/22/2009, 11:11 am EST

Sucks.

Anonymous | 6/22/2009, 5:38 pm EST

eh

Seth | 6/22/2009, 8:30 pm EST

This is a new low point for music. Its more of a fashion show than a musical act, proving that if you have the act down, the music does not matter. Thanks Rolling Stone for further destroying music through such promotions.

Jay | 6/22/2009, 9:00 pm EST

What a joke. MGMT actually make good sounding music, these guys are just terrible, unoriginal and just plain difficult to listen to.

Jay | 6/22/2009, 9:01 pm EST

Wow, more of a fashion show than an actual band, they seem to have everything down except for the music. Nice one Rolling Stone.

Anonymous | 6/22/2009, 11:28 pm EST

MGMT are a bunch of sell outs. Why do you only think music is good if they play it in movies or commercials? This band has potential. You got to have bad taste in music if you think this is the worst band ever. I guess it would be expected since this is posted on rolling stones website. Have you guys ever heard of indie? That’s what MGMT is, except their sell outs.

stop kidding yourselves and | 6/23/2009, 2:59 pm EST

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anne | 6/23/2009, 4:10 pm EST

this band is amazing and they do not deserve enough credit, if they’ve opened for mgmt on tour then obviously they have potential. they are not a bunch of rich kids trying to scam, they are brooklyn music and people in brooklyn love them. one member used to be in diamond nights, also an awesome band that broke up a couple years ago. it’s not hard hard rock but its good rock and indie music. give it a chance you emo kids.

Anne | 6/23/2009, 4:12 pm EST

they don’t GET the credit they deserve***

Hue | 6/23/2009, 7:15 pm EST

Lead singer Will Roan went to Bard College.

Alan | 6/25/2009, 5:58 pm EST

Amazing baby achieving any modicum of mainstream success would be like McCain and Palin winning last years election, more proof that America has been fooled into supporting something that is so clearly unhealthy and void of substance.

Brian | 6/30/2009, 5:44 am EST

I think it’s hilarious that everyone who has commented on here talking shit has actually taken the time to get to it somehow and listen to it and even comment on it. If you think its terrible and all of that then why are you going out of your way to voice your opinion and comment on it. They’re obviously drunk and fucked up while recording this and just did it on the spot. That’s fucking rocknroll, and if you actually listened to all of their music you’d see they’re a balanced neo-psychadelic/pop/rock band who write good songs and have good energy. Obviously they caught your attention, or you wouldn’t be going out of your way to comment on here, fuckers.

Chimpy | 7/2/2009, 12:36 pm EST

Sounds like either you love ‘em or hate ‘em… but I like it.

lauryenne | 7/4/2009, 6:31 pm EST

I love this band. There album is like amazing !! You people obviously don’t know what good music sounds like.

Jeff | 7/6/2009, 12:41 am EST

Their album has been getting some pretty mediocre reviews, a lot of 6/10. Most seem to agree they have their image down, but the music just is not there. I wonder how long they can last.

Annie | 7/8/2009, 11:12 pm EST

BOOOOOOOOO! Saw them in LA, bad music, bad performance. Don’t waste your money.

Nathan | 7/20/2009, 6:13 pm EST

Just another bad band with a lot of money behind them. Their music is garbage.

Scott | 7/20/2009, 6:16 pm EST

I totally love this band, they’re sort of like the new backstreet boys for me. I used to like pop, but now i only listen to underground music by true artists.

Jeff | 7/22/2009, 2:37 pm EST

Its people like Scott who used to like boybands and now like amazing baby that ruin indie music, its clear amazing baby is just another band that relies on their look to sell, that labels are cramming down our throats. THEY ARE TERRIBLE!

Susie | 7/22/2009, 2:40 pm EST

BAD MUSIC FOR PEOPLE WHO DON’T KNOW ANY BETTER.

Kelly | 7/23/2009, 7:40 pm EST

I had high hopes with all the comparisons to MGMT, but when I finally heard their music I was really disappointed, its flat out difficult to listen to, there is no way around it, they make bad music.

Jake | 7/23/2009, 7:43 pm EST

I agree with Scott’s comment below, they are like the new backstreet boys, except with even less talent.

Dusty Starr | 7/23/2009, 8:37 pm EST

Are all you nay-sayers retarted? This is the best new band i’ve heard in a long time. The song are intricate, weaving multi part vocals w/backups and harmonies. Blistering guitars, great bass and drum parts and to top it off they even throw in keys, string and horn parts. The recording is beautiful timeless. Seriously i can understand if you don’t like this particular style of music, but to say they suck or are horrible tells me you are musical bafoons!

Simon | 7/24/2009, 12:49 pm EST

If you really cannot tell that this is substanceless ingenuine music aggressively marketed towards people who don’t know any better, then you, unfortunately, are the living proof that money, marketing and style sell albums rather than good music.

Blake | 7/24/2009, 6:55 pm EST

Uh, this band sucks, a lot of hype over shit music. And dusty starr, nice way to use the word retarded, really mature, that kind of insensitivity shows that you are opinion is meaningless.

Rex | 7/27/2009, 7:37 pm EST

“If you really cannot tell that this is substanceless ingenuine music aggressively marketed towards people who don’t know any better, then you, unfortunately, are the living proof that money, marketing and style sell albums rather than good music. ”

Could not have said it better.

Cast | 8/1/2009, 10:15 am EST

This album was recorded in my apartment. I think it’s pretty rich. The songs aren’t catchy up front. It’s a soft sell band. Just drop the CD somewhere and let someone discover it and I think they’ll probably end up loving it.

Also, I would say that the assertion that these guys are somehow rich kids who got a big record deal or that they are riding the coat tails of MGMT is false. Don’t pay any attention to that noise. That may go down in other places, but not in Brooklyn. Weak lamb get devoured by the lion in the concrete jungle the strong stand and rumble the weak fold and crumble, it’s the land of trouble. They’re just talented musicians making interesting, tripped out acid rock and you haters are jealous.

Everyone else, go to playlist.com and listen to the real recordings.

Cast | 8/1/2009, 3:59 pm EST

Actually I was just joking in my last post, they are really bad.

Every press release compares them to MGMT event the ones their label puts out, so there is no debating the fact that they are trying to grab the same listeners that like MGMT.

Harv. | 8/2/2009, 1:02 am EST

Better than MGMT. End of story.

Al | 8/2/2009, 1:21 am EST

hey me, nice second post there. um, i agree with my/your statement about MGMT. this IS a new band. i’m sure they are grabbing any fan base they can, so i don’t personally see anything wrong with the comparison to a currently popular band like MGMT, especially because in this case the music is actually tied to MGMT’s. Ben W plays on the album, and helped write some of the songs. it bothers me just as much as the next guy when mags and labels pump out generic xerox copies of talented bands, but in this particular case, i don’t feel that applies. these are well written songs, and if you don’t like them, i guess it’s just your/my loss.

one last thing, if you guys are so concerned with the slick corporate marketing of music by the industry, WTF are you surfing rolling stone.com for anyway?

Cast | 8/2/2009, 2:44 pm EST

Oh man, I don’t know what I was thinking in my last post, I must have been pretty messed up when I wrote that.

Anyway, what I meant to say was that this band is not a knock off of MGMT because they do not posses nearly enough skill to begin to fool anyone of such similarities. They could be a good knock off if only they had some musical talent.

Pete | 8/2/2009, 2:47 pm EST

Music sucks in general right now, and this is one of the bands that is clearly making it that way.

Also Anonymous | 9/4/2009, 1:41 pm EST

I LOVE AMAZING BABY. seriously, these guys know what music is all about and they do it cuz they love it… respect.

Simon | 9/5/2009, 8:42 pm EST

This is one of the worst bands to come out in a long time. I saw one of their shows and it was awful. Anyone who likes this kind of crap is clearly into looks rather than quality music.

Kate | 9/19/2009, 6:41 pm EST

I went to see them play based on this article and I was SO DISAPPOINTED they were really really terrible. How can they have any fans after seeing them play live?

Jen | 10/6/2009, 1:46 am EST

I seriously LOVE MGMT- especially the stuff off of the EP such as Indie Rokkers. I bought the Amazing Baby album and I’m already a fan. For those of you who hate this, maybe you’re just not into this sort of music. It is what it is. As a musician myself I hear talent. As for “selling out” I’m sooo tired of people using that term. Get a new one. Are you that selfish? Be happy for cool bands that can make it. Lord knows it’s a tough road.

Anonymous | 10/9/2009, 7:42 pm EST

God this band is awful, the album is crowded and just plain annoying to listen to, and if you were to see a live show it becomes clear that they have not a shred of legitimacy or originality to them.

tired of this | 10/28/2009, 11:05 am EST

these guys suck. diamond nights was cool, stylophone sucked, heavy hands sucked, and lions and tigers sucked.

These guys are simply trying to get famous and will make decisions based on that goal alone. They rode on the coattails of MGMT and continue to do so.

fuck being famous in europe. If brooklyn doesnt give ‘em the time of day, then they’ve fucked up.

Anonymous | 11/23/2009, 10:34 am EST

i’ve been following this band since they formed and think they’re briliant.Headdress would be my fave song by them.i hope they make it to oxegen 2010!
