The Gossip on “Lesbian Processing” With Rick Rubin: The Story Behind “Music for Men”

When the Gossip’s third album Standing in the Way of Control broke huge in Britain, the public appeared to be staring at two Beth Dittos: the outspoken media minx who bounced into the U.K. gossip sheets and front row seats at Fashion Week, and the fierce frontwoman attempting to jostle society’s expectations with a beat you can dance to.

The band’s new Rick Rubin-produced album Music for Men (out digitally June 23rd; in stores October 6th) makes a fabulous case for the latter taking over: it’s an amazing, multifaceted, socially conscious record that seems destined to take the Gossip to even greater heights. “It has a lot of meanings,” Ditto tells RS of the record’s title, “but I also thought it was just a cool sound, that it sounded really good — it’s that simple.”

Ditto says she and guitarist Nathan Howdeshell (a.k.a. Brace Paine) write songs kind of magically — “Nathan will have a guitar part he made on his laptop and I’ll go into the hotel room and just sing over it. The lyrics and the melody come together at the exact same time always” — and Rubin seems to have been the ideal shepherd for the band’s first major label record. “He is really nurturing,” she says. “He always wants to make sure you have what you need, and I’m not talking about ‘Do you need whiskey, ’cause we’ll get you drunk.’ I’m talking, what do you need in your soul to make you feel as good as you can or as you can sound? Because the better you feel, the better the record’s going to come out. It was like lesbian processing 101.”

What Ditto says she needed and got in droves was the confidence to expand even her own expectations of what the Gossip could be. “His whole vision was seeing the potential to be a real band as opposed not taking ourselves as seriously as we could,” she says. “Like, you can write a real record and it doesn’t have to be silly. You can actually believe in yourself enough to write more than one verse to a song and not have to repeat it.”

Ditto says on the first day in the studio she nervously asked Rubin to lay down the process and he told her, “We don’t know what it is yet, but we’ll know when it’s done.” Ditto says, “It was a perfect answer.”

And just because Ditto learned the Art of Zen Album Producing with Rubin doesn’t mean she’s lost her love for answering the tough questions. Like how she might assist her fellow lady-loving gossip page mainstay Lindsay Lohan? “I don’t know if she’d be my friend. I don’t know if she wants to be seen with a lesbian for real,” Ditto says. “I would be her friend in a heartbeat. I don’t know if she’s comfortable. But poor thing. She’s younger than me! And I can’t imagine all that coming to you at that time. This is the key to it Lindsay Lohan: a sense of humor.”

And as for getting naked onstage, Ditto confirms her frequent strip-downs are traditionally one-part politics, one-part necessity. “It is part radical statement, but man, it was so hot,” she says. “Still to this day that is the driving force. I cannot breath. I don’t weigh 130 pounds — I can’t play in full sequined gowns. I am working on outfits right now that I don’t have to take off, that are perfect.”

Good Lord, what a disgusting pig she is. I can’t stand her. Not because of her weight or sexual preference, (although the fact that she wear outfits meant for a size 2 when she’s a size 25+ makes her look more ridiculous than anything. I mean, look at Adele, she’s overweight and has no problem with it, but she understands that it means she can’t wear a Herve Leger bandage dress at her size.) but because she’s an ignorant loudmouth who says stupid random things, thinking that she’s Gloria Steinem or something. She is no feminist icon as some ass-kissing articles would lead you to believe. But then again, what positive influence could some trailer-trash redneck who grew up eating squirrels have? And Rick Rubin MUST be starving for cash to produce an album for those idiots. What a long way he’s come from working with Run DMC and Metallica to… this. If Gossip blows up (and I’m sure they will, cause there are too many idiots willing to buy their record), then we’re doomed. Music is already in a crappy state, and we already have loudmouth douche bags (Kanye West) making us sick each time they open their mouths. Imagine if Bitch Ditto actually has a platform. Someone please send her to an island cut off from civilization. Seriously, PLEASE.

Ellen,
Your post is just rude. Superficial and mean spirited. Gossip’s last record was pretty good… looking forward to the next. What is up with the Hate Speech?

twistedpunk | 6/17/2009, 2:05 pm EST

Get a life Ellen. Music’s in the best state it’s been in for a long time, the advent of technology has given anyone the ability to share their music online for the world to hear and, as a result, huge talents are being discovered all the time. Unless you live under a rock you already know this… instead of wasting space on a board making ridiculous and unfounded comments why don’t you just go and listen to something you enjoy, no one forces you to listen to or read about beth ditto. Your hateful comments just expose you as a shallow and pointless troll with nothing better to do with your time.
On Topic–> Beth Ditto is a punk godess, can’t wait for the 22nd!!!

Dammit! I was looking forward to getting the album next week. Now I have to wait 3 months to buy the CD? Wonder why the music industry are losing money every year? It’s because they are doing stupid things like this.

Gossip is one of the few bands that deserve the hype and press that they get. They are great musically. And yes, Beth Ditto is important for who is she is: a confident overweight woman and an out and proud lesbian. She is a role model that is sorely lacking in today’s society.

i enjoy listenin 2 her voice. thts all i thnk really matters. nd ellen yu r sooo fukn rude. yu define da true definition of a hater… get a fukn life

ellen | 6/17/2009, 5:26 pm EST

If she’s a role model, then society is doomed. And judging by the people who think she’s a “goddess”, it’s clear that you guys are probably dumber than she is. If you want a confident lesbian to look up to, go to Melissa Etheridge or Ellen DeGeneres. If you want an overweight girl who’s talented to look up to, then go to Adele. Beth Ditto is a pathetic excuse for a human being, just like you guys. BTW, what kind of “role model” touts Kate “Cocaine” Moss as being a role model herself? As Trent Reznor said, idiots rule. Oh, and I’m entitled to voice my dislike her, just as you guys are entitled to kiss her huge, spandex-wrapped ass. Go to a Gossip fan forum if you only want to hear praise and admiration.

ellen your stupid. you think rick rubin is just desperate for cash?! you know how many bands he’s produced in his entire career? heres a list: slayer, system of a down, dixie chicks, beastie boys, danzing, audioslave, chilli peppers, johny cash, slipknot, linkin park, metallica, the mars volta, run dmc, jay z and many more!! i seriously doubt hes starving for cash after working with this many bands.

UncleWIlly | 6/21/2009, 10:44 am EST

Wow. I don’t even know the band Gossip other than seeing pics of the singer in tabloids. But Jesus Ellen … angry much? I can’t image they suck any worse than the plethora of awful bands defacing the modern rock world right now. I sense some misplace anger in you. Are we struggling with weight and self-image, too?

To Counter Ellen. | 6/21/2009, 5:49 pm EST

Let’s see… she didn’t hide her sexuality from the media to get famous. She didn’t succumb to peer pressure and refuse to show her body due to the flawed and limited “moral” standards of the mainstream… She can wear what she wants, say what she wants and not give a flying fuck what you have to say about it. I think that’s a role model if I’ve ever seen one. If we all lived in a guilded cage like you suggest, we’d be pets… I don’t want to be a pet, I have will and desire, most importantly, I have acceptance and admiration for those who do as they please. That, to me, is humanity. Ps. Your mom’s balls smell. There, I had to stoop to your level so you understood part of it. 3 snaps in a Z formation.

Rick Rubin is co-head of Columbia Records. Read the New York Times profile on him. Here’s to Beth and the Gossip conquering America like they did the UK.

dan | 6/30/2009, 11:18 pm EST

beth ditto is the shit

bez | 9/24/2009, 9:29 am EST

just to stick with the hate
@ellen
ellen and melissa etheridge were beating around the bush for ages (possibly clearing the path for the likes of ditto) that s not what i call confident. musicwise gossip are nowhere near as all the creed-live rip-offs that still come from the US in droves.
please… some perspective.
i personally like a woman who strips off in public like Yo Majesty f.e., cause guys get away with that all the time. regardless of the music they make.
