Springsteen Plays “Santa,” NIN’s Reznor Says Farewell at Bonnaroo

6/14/09, 3:45 pm EST

At last year’s Bonnaroo, rapper M.I.A. made headlines when she claimed that she was performing her last show ever.

Here we go again: during his late-night set on Which Stage for Bonnaroo Day Three, Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor announced that he was performing his last show ever in the United States. (Reznor and his band are headed to Europe and Asia for a 33-date tour that wraps on August 12th.) Reznor suggested that his decision was from too much touring, but he did allude that he would continue to record and release new music. “Don’t be sad,” he said. “I’ll keep going.” If Reznor was growing weary from the road, you would’ve never known it from NIN’s blistering set of raging, anthemic industrial rock, which featured highlights like the propulsive new track “Discipline” as well as an onstage collaboration with the Dillinger Escape Plan for “Wish.”

(Dive into Bonnaroo ‘09 in our gallery of shots from the stage and beyond.)

Just before Nine Inch Nails, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band stormed Bonnaroo with a monster three-hour set that was heavy on hits (”Born to Run,” “Thunder Road”) along with a few rarities. Springsteen also seemed to be having a total blast during his set, frequently sprinting down a catwalk to get closer to the packed crowd. During the portion where he grabs placards from fans emblazoned with song requests, Springsteen managed to snag a giant Santa Claus poster with the words “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town.” You’d never think Springsteen and his E Street Band would’ve launched into the holiday classic: it was the middle of summer, after all, and the weather was hovering around 80 degrees. But Springsteen was game and he signaled his band to kick off the song with percussive sleigh bells. Mid-way through, Springsteen shouted, “It’s 259 days to Christmas. Have you all been good? You haven’t been taking any brown acid?” It was a strange and hilarious moment, and one that will go down one of Bonnaroo’s most memorable. (Watch what happened when the hilarious Aziz Ansari — posing as Bruce’s road manager — hit up some Bonnaroo vendors for freebies.)

The collapse of the auto-industry and its effect on blue-collar American workers weighed heavily on Springsteen’s mind and his set was filled with working-class anthems like “Johnny 99″ and “The River.” Springsteen also took a moment to deliver something of a sermon about the transformative power of his music in hard times. “We want to take despair and we want to build us a house of joy,” he said. “And we’re gonna take the sadness and build a house of joy!”

Mid-afternoon highlights included Wilco, whose set focused on songs from their upcoming Wilco (The Album). (Click above to watch footage from Jeff Tweedy and Co.’s set.) When the band took the What Stage they launched into fan tribute “Wilco (The Song),” and later stretched out with the new album’s centerpiece “Bull Black Nova,” which hit a soaring height thanks to secret weapon Nels Cline’s avant garde noisy guitar solo. Just before, over on the Which Stage, Warren Haynes of Gov’t Mule played a covers-heavy set, featuring predicable ones like the Grateful Dead’s “St. Stephen,” along with more surprising choices like Radiohead’s “Creep.” Haynes gave the latter a cool new vibe by trading in Thom Yorke’s high-pitched falsetto for his own bluesy growl. (Watch our interview with Haynes here.)

Expectations were high for the early morning set from neo-psychedelic warriors MGMT, who wrapped up day three with an hour-and-a-half performance at That Tent. MGMT have been slowly building a huge fanbase, thanks to their singles “Time to Pretend” and trippy videos like “Kids.” And judging by the crowd — which stretched for at least 50 yards outside of the tented area — these guys should have been playing larger areas like the Which Stage. As singer Andrew VanWyngarden said, “Thanks to Bruce Springsteen for opening up. We wouldn’t say it if it weren’t true.” Overall, MGMT’s performance was spectacular and it is sure to go down as a career-defining breakthrough. Frontmen Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser, along with their crack band, turned out woozy, surreal psychedelic rock that sounded equally tight and, at times, improvised. (What can it mean when Phish fans come to your show and start tossing around hundreds of glowsticks?) After dipping into covers like an awesome version of Til Tuesday’s “Voices Carry” (featuring Chairlift’s Caroline Polachek singing lead), the boys wrapped up their set with a new song “Congratulations,” a laid-back electro ballad with a chord progression that borrowed from the Grateful Dead’s “Friend of the Devil.” “All I need is a great big congratulations,” VanWyngarden crooned. MGMT earned one for sure.

Sounds like an awesome time!! The phish, beasties, and boss sets all look great, can’t wait to hear ‘em! maybe next tear :-) if you’ve still got the festival bug, check out the lineup at rothfest dot net, it’s right around the corner!

Nick | 6/15/2009, 9:01 am EST

NIN will be back. If he’s only self-releasing music online he’s not going to make that much money, so he’ll need touring revenue. Those festival offers will sound pretty good when his next album only sells 9,000 copies on NIN’s website.

shut up | 6/15/2009, 9:07 am EST

now Mars Volta coverage? just goes to show rolling stone is as daft as they ever were. best show all weekend by far.

MrNiceGuy | 6/15/2009, 10:56 am EST

NIN leaving and BS (literally) arriving. Two more reasons Bonnaroo is sliding downhill.

Captain Molotov | 6/15/2009, 12:40 pm EST

Nick – self-releasing music online made him so many times more money than he did through a record. He made $1,000,000 in one week from the release of Ghosts, his first independent release. He made less than $1,000,000 in one year of Year Zero, his last record on a record label.

Greendale | 6/15/2009, 1:34 pm EST

Nick,

Artists who have developed an audience make a fortune self releasing their music online. I’m shocked any established muscian doesn’t break away from labels once their contracts expire.

Jeff | 6/15/2009, 2:08 pm EST

So I see Trent has decided to devote 100% of his time to Twittering and bickering with his fans online.

d | 6/15/2009, 6:23 pm EST

you missed mentioning of montreal totally destroying their tent (and all their guitars onstage). incredible show. mars volta were awesome also.

sarc | 6/15/2009, 7:49 pm EST

Wilco was amazing, though the show did NOT “center” around songs from their new album. They only played two songs from it in a two-hour set. If anything, it centered around material from “Yankee Hotel Foxtrot,” from which they played “I Am Trying To Break Your Heart,” “War On War,” “Jesus, Etc.,” “I’m The Man Who Loves you,” “Pot Kettle Black,” and “Reservations.” I’d say six songs provides more of a center than two songs.

And, as far as Trent retiring, it seems he’s getting more grief about it than anyone gives Jay-Z about his requisite annual retirement. ‘Sup wit dat?

phreenow | 6/15/2009, 10:12 pm EST

No mention of moe’s marathon jam till 7 AM? I guess RS reporters are early birds…

Anonymous | 6/16/2009, 2:06 am EST

I heard from my entire camp that MGMT sucked, and that was coming from big fans of the band.

nineinchnailsrules | 6/16/2009, 7:56 am EST

Nick, NIN is not about money. It’s about great art. 20 yrs of great music needs to be respected. He will be back and better than ever. Just won’t be the same.

nineinchnailsrules | 6/16/2009, 7:58 am EST

Jeff: Very funny.Getting married and having children seems to be TR’s agenda. Not bickering with fans.

Petey G | 6/16/2009, 11:50 am EST

yep, MGMT was lame and that’s coming from a fan. i was near the front too so i bet it was REALLY lame to the ppl outside the tent. they didn’t even fill their timeslot and they played the entire album, plus new songs. spectacular is definitely not the word i would use to describe it. no mention of moe.’s set, not surprised. no mars volta? did you even see Wilco’s set? Jimmy Buffett? either i recall more than Kevin O’Donnell (which is unlikely given the toxins in my body and lack of writing utensil) or i plain saw more acts.

Dr.Milgram's right hand | 6/16/2009, 12:46 pm EST

Moe. doesn’t get the respect they deserve anywhere. too bad they’re not playing at ROTHBURY, they could have gotten some new fans. plenty of other acts will be keeping you up till dawn, so if you’ve got another fest in ya’, head on over to rothfest.net and make new friends~

brock | 6/17/2009, 1:37 pm EST

MGMT was a terrible set, easily the worst I saw all weekend. NIN, Yeasayer, Moe., and even Ben Harper all blew them out of the water based on fan reaction (I only went to NIN, MGMT, and moe.’s epic marathon set). This reporter needs to get a clue.

Robert | 6/17/2009, 4:39 pm EST

Saw Nine Inch Nails a few weeks back – more like Nine Inch Yawns. There was absolutely no passion to the show. Just play the cd over a speaker system and I would have been more content than to see some bored senseless, angry aging man (angry about what? get a therapist) who played a lot of songs but really the songs said nothing. Why bother? Trent glad to see you finally doing the right thing – a little late if you ask me. Now grow up.

Kimmy | 6/17/2009, 6:07 pm EST

I was really looking forward to Govt Mule’s set, but it was AWFUL! The bass was way too loud and it overpowered Warren Haynes’ vocals. Helter Skelter? Are you kidding me?

Linz | 6/17/2009, 6:14 pm EST

Merle Haggard did not disappoint. It was obvious we were in the presence of greatness. Pledge allegiance to the Hagg!

arch stanton | 6/17/2009, 6:50 pm EST

no more NIN. about a decade to late. RIP Cobain……………

Jay | 6/17/2009, 8:02 pm EST

I caught 45 mins of the NIN set and I was BLOWING UP!!! It was an amazing spectacle and though im not a huge NIN fan, I enjoyed the atmosphere combined with the the grit of the music. plus 2 hot chicks were playing with glow sticks and it was quite a show. Also I had never seen MGMT before and with the right drugs and the right hot girls dancing next to you, that set was amazing.

ED2ci | 6/17/2009, 9:01 pm EST

no idea what these MGMT haters are talking about!!! I agree 100% with the writer that the band sounded thick and surreal. you got the feeling that they were having a great time and so was I. It will definitely define the rest of their career. Plus, COHEED ROCKED!

bilyy | 6/18/2009, 12:07 am EST

NIN suck!!!

spc | 6/19/2009, 1:31 pm EST

MGMT fucking rocked. Open your ears.

Veteran | 6/24/2009, 1:49 am EST

How hard is it for RS not to mention Girl Talk making everyone everywhere dance and Paul Oakenfold bending White Stripes riffs and RHCP songs into smashing dance songs? I’ll agree that this reporter had an early bedtime.

always w/ the hatred | 6/25/2009, 4:27 pm EST

Bonnaroo represents much that is good about music because it shys from no genre. Yet so many of you still need 2 add your 2 cents worth of hatred. Example- NIN set was very well played, yet haters-some who werent even in the crowd that night-feel the need to spew their hate. If you dont like something-move on and find something that you do, or just STFU and sulk cause your never gonna truly enjoy anything and thats not our problem.

PRoo | 7/1/2009, 12:14 pm EST

MOE. was the place to be Saturday. Band switch for set break with Grace Potter and the Nocturnals (intense), Rec. Chem had to be a half hour of intense, tight, jamming…..it was awesome. They are really really underrated.

alexis | 7/2/2009, 9:48 pm EST

I share the same sentiments as many previous posters…But first of all..No coverage of the Phish shows?! Changed my life!! Moe. was phenomenal!! I lost my voice because they opened with Plane Crash! It was amazing and the energy in the crowd was fantastic! (To anyone who WAS at the Moe. show…I was the “HUG ME!!” Girl!!) I heard the NIN show going off..lots of smoke and lights and loudness so if that’s your thing it seemed like a pretty flashy event. The Mars Volta owned their set and all of our souls! I was outraged and distraught when it ended! Cage the Elephant over at That Tent 12:15 on sunday was AMAZING! They have a small catalogue so far but they’re going to be HUGE. Another amazing set was a band called The Dirty Guv’nahs who played in the Troo Music Lounge. They were local from Knoxville and they were absolutely wonderful. One of my favorite shows all weekend (and the best part was there was only 20 people there! I got to go up and hug them all after the show.) Bonnaroo is such an amazing experience to enjoy the bands you love and start loving some bands you never heard of before.

Chras | 10/26/2009, 12:17 am EST

Bruce was soo amazing I lost composure called my mom freaking out how amazing he is live. Boomeroo!!!
