When Jim James, M. Ward, Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis hit the road together in 2004 under the banner “An Evening With: Bright Eyes, Jim James and M. Ward,” insiders referred to the tour as “Monsters of Folk.” The name stuck, and now the quartet have announced an official release under the moniker: their self-titled album is due September 22nd.

The My Morning Jacket, She & Him and Bright Eyes members carved out time in Malibu and Omaha studios and spent two years working sessions into their already packed schedules; Mogis produced the album. The band’s reps promise an LP of road-worn, sun-soaked fables with brilliant choruses and some electronic elements.

Oberst is also the subject of a profile in the new issue of Rolling Stone, in which Conor talks spirituality, Leonard Cohen and retiring the Bright Eyes moniker to hit the road with the Mystic Valley Band. As for Monsters of Folk. check out the track list below:

Monsters of Folk

1. “Dear God (sincerely M.O.F.)”
2. “Say Please”
3. “Whole Lotta Losin’”
4. “Temazcal”

Get rid of that spare Conor Oberst, and you might have something.

bLAmo | 6/12/2009, 10:47 pm EST

denton you’re a punk, conor is very talented.

Jeff Jefferson | 6/12/2009, 10:48 pm EST

Jim James is the least talented of the bunch.

Mike/Houston,TX. | 6/13/2009, 10:02 am EST

Oberst is over-hyped, over sensationalized, lackluster and he could NEVER fill BOB DYLAN’s shoes. Enuff said.

scott | 6/15/2009, 11:27 am EST

jim james is the best of the bunch

DopeboyinaCaddy | 6/18/2009, 8:50 pm EST

Jim James the least talented of the bunch? Possibly the most ludicrous thing I’ve ever heard.

Ari | 6/24/2009, 3:48 pm EST

M. Ward is the best out of the group. Connor is talented but i don’t care for him as much as jim james or M. Ward. It can’t hurt to be open minded either

Soothsayer | 6/25/2009, 11:16 am EST

Bob Dylan did more for rock n roll when he rolled the Beatles their first joint then that pussy Oberst will ever do in his life.

Connor T | 6/25/2009, 4:34 pm EST

All three of them are good. They each have their strong suits; jim james’ vocals, conor oberst’s lyrics, and M. Ward’s arrangement. If you don’t like one of them, at least respect them for working with each other.

Elcoj | 6/30/2009, 2:33 pm EST

Hi,
Where are you from? Is it a secret? :)
Elcoj

Brian | 7/1/2009, 4:26 am EST

olololo at Oberst haters.

All three are very talented. Looking forward to this.

Matt | 7/2/2009, 2:04 am EST

I’m down, this is gonna be dope.

Listen to the imagery on My Morning Jacket’s ‘Librarian’

MMJ albums ‘Tenesse Fire’ and ‘At Dawn’ are both excellent.

it took me a while to like Oberst, but it’ll work.

Laura | 7/2/2009, 2:02 pm EST

All ya’ll Conor Oberst haters – have you listened to his more recent stuff? Mystic Valley Band, etc.? He’s matured tremendously from his earlier stuff… Personally, I am super psyched these 3 are playing together again!!

Angelique | 7/5/2009, 10:20 am EST

I’m totally excited. :]
It’ll be sweet to hear them play together again. And all you punks, Conor is a genius.

stellamicks | 7/5/2009, 9:25 pm EST

Love all 3 – all very talented and love each cd’s in abundance why dont you come to NZ!!!!!!!

conor oberst is by far the best i say drop m ward if anyone but no they all are espacially conor him and bright eyes maybe if you guys listened to a few songs and actually listen to the lyrics listen to perfect sonnet or if winter ends naww listen to all of them ohh ya and the new conor fucking sucksssss!!!!!

MuSICK | 7/15/2009, 4:33 pm EST

For starters, most of the people who tend to hate conor oberst do so because of his voice. If you value music for its lyrics though he is second to none. It is unfair to compare him to bob dylan because of his HUGE following of fans even to this day. Conor has never aimed for the size of audience that dylan did, but he is acheiving it… and why is that you say? because the man has as much if not more talent then anyone in music to date. Hate my opinion if you will, but get back to me in september after you listen to this CD and we’ll talk then.

Anonymous | 7/19/2009, 9:06 pm EST

funny how people talk bad about conor, but yet they are actually reading the articles about him. odd.

Alex | 7/20/2009, 7:36 pm EST

Does nobody else hear heaven when jim james sings?

heyaheyaheya | 7/21/2009, 4:36 pm EST

i think a lot of you are missing a big part of Monsters of Folk, which is Mike Mogis, who is an amazing musician and composer. i think he’s gonna bring a lot to the production aspect of the album.

Jessi | 7/22/2009, 11:30 am EST

How “pussy” a musician is has nil to nothing to do with how musically talented he or she is, Soothsayer. Forgive Conor Oberst for not having been there to introduce the Beatles to pot, his bad.
There is no reason to bash any one of these artists since each one has proved themselves to be more than talented enough.

Ashley | 7/23/2009, 5:21 am EST

Conor Oberst is second to none.

Jackson | 7/23/2009, 10:52 pm EST

Regardless of who likes or dislikes conor oberst or any of the other musicians in this group.. if you dig it, run with it.. if not – why bother even bagging them? most of your debates run along the lines of conor oberst not comparing to your fav guitar slinger.. but hes out there writing music for people like us, so love it or leave it

amyhasbangs | 7/24/2009, 2:41 pm EST

i dont know what the negative comments are accomplishing, but i can’t imagine anything but a quality album coming from these talented guys. im really excited.

Joe | 7/27/2009, 4:13 pm EST

Conor Oberst is a musical genius, regardless of the bad talking some of you are saying. His lyrics are very easy to relate to, and his music has always been unique in many ways. Of course he’ll never replace Bob Dylan’s position, but there are no equals in life. Essentially, he is the Bob Dylan of this generation. M. Ward is also very talented, and I’m very excited for this band to tour because I have yet to see both of these play live.

Don’t badmouth something that’s truly amazing.

ezindie | 7/28/2009, 1:48 pm EST

This is gonna be hugeeeeeee

Mitch | 7/28/2009, 9:21 pm EST

i didn’t realize there were people who hated conor so much. in my experience, people either haven’t heard of him, cant recall what he sounds like, or love him. i love bob dylan, and i love conor/ bright eyes. i think the people who talk badly about him are people who have only heard his earlier bright eyes material, in which i understand can be hard to relate to and understand. and really it isnt their fault for not understanding. you know what you know, oh well. it is seeming to me that conor is becoming a bob dylan like figure of “this” generation, however, dylan still did “it” first, so he will always hold the crown in my opinion. i love all conors material from bright eyes to his new stuff, and i hope his contribution to this album is great. ive never been able to get into m ward like i wish i had however… i dont know what it is that doesnt click with me right away, but i do know he is a great musician. and Mike Mogis is an AMAZING musician, he is partially responsible for making the bright eyes albums what the were musically. (check out Lightspeed Champions debut album, he put his instrumentation in that as well [[the pedal steel is the secret!]]). anyway. i think the album will take some getting used to but i think i can enjoy it. i am also very very much so looking forward to the final bright eyes album… i hope he uses bright eyes elements well, and i hope its better than cassedega…. I’m sure it will be epic. whatever the case, i feel content knowing that conor will make music throughout the remainder of my life. as dylan did for his generation. and in the end, could that be what puts him in a similar position of recognition?

Concern for ufos | 7/29/2009, 12:54 am EST

I’m sure Oberst never, ever wanted to be compared to Dylan – he was just hyped up that way. Why not recognize the fact that he is his own person and has a talent for writing lyrics, amongst other things. Personally, I love his voice for the fact that it isn’t perfect. All of these musicians are pure talent and I am so stoked to see what they put out together. Mike Mogis is definitely the underdog of the group but I have no doubt that he’ll put the most heart into it.

TA | 7/31/2009, 9:07 pm EST

Easy Soothsayer. That’s my friend your talkin’ about!

ryczkoj | 8/7/2009, 5:21 pm EST

please stop comparing conor to dylan. he hates it. he has been able to transform and evolve as a musician over the years that he deserves more credit than a comparison. for any of you who hate his voice, clearly you haven’t been listening to his newer material because if you did, you would distinguish how much more deeper and consistent his vocals have become. I really don’t think that anyone can be a mediocre oberst fan. you either appreciate him or you’re an ignorant loser with no taste in music whatsoever. everything he does, merits respect.

ryczkoj | 8/7/2009, 5:33 pm EST

did anyone read the recent profile on conor? what are his future projects? more MVB? i know he’s retiriing Bright Eyes, but what are his reasons for it??? can someone please enlighten me???

Yuengling | 8/10/2009, 3:30 am EST

this does not make any sense. Can’t these guys just focus their time on producing and making better albums on their own? It feels as if they are all copping out and instead of just trying to make an album as good as the last they combine forces to shield their insecurity about their success. This way they’ll get good hype on the lineup alone, instead of people having to actually listen to music.
M. Ward and Oberst together might work but there are far too many brillant minds on this album and not enough disciples.
BAD IDEA>>>>,….

If you can’t appreciate Oberst’s passion for his song-writing that’s quite alright but no need to come on here and talk non-sense.

js | 9/11/2009, 3:15 pm EST

Everyone owns a soap box I see… LOL I’m throwing back your 2 cents at ya and listening to some great music for my soul.

NO | 9/16/2009, 3:25 pm EST

A little birdie told me that the album leaked yesterday.

unity420 | 9/18/2009, 6:13 pm EST

I’m looking forward to hear what each has to bring to the table. Should be interesting to say the least…

heyaheyaheya | 9/18/2009, 8:24 pm EST

can everyone stop talking about conor oberst and take in the WHOLE BAND? geeze.

oberstfan | 9/20/2009, 5:06 pm EST

Just bought the album and love it. Love and own a ton of Oberst stuff, he’s a genius, never heard of the other guys, Jim James and M. Ward, but will check out some of their other stuff.

Conor Ryan | 9/22/2009, 2:06 am EST

Yo, anyone who thinks conor oberst isn’t amazingly talented, has no taste in music and no place on this forum. He is the genius voice of a generation. Bob Dylan x50, the man can wrap an illusion in a mataphor, and then turn it into a simile of the fight you got into with your older brother last month. He is the single best lyricist of all time. thats all.

dillweed | 9/22/2009, 11:48 pm EST

Have any of you who say “drop so and so” or “so and so is the best one of the group” listened to it? I am honestly not a particularly big fan of any of them, but this album blows me away.

Mr. Yastrzemski | 9/24/2009, 4:01 pm EST

Anyone comaping Oberst/Bright Eyes to Dylan is an idiot. He is his own entity unto himself. As is Dylan. Artists like Oberst are a fresh change of pace for anyone who enjoys true musicainship and is tired of having psuedo-talented American Idol winners and lame wannabe R&B/ Hip Hop kids shoved down our throats. Yeungling, I think you are completly wrong. I think this album is just 4 musicians who enjoy each other company and have much respect for each others music and thought it would be fun to make an album together. No more, no less.

ninja | 9/24/2009, 10:37 pm EST

Great album! Yim Yames is definitely my fav but can appreciate everyone’s talent. Negative comments need not reply….

alexander Towell | 10/8/2009, 10:09 pm EST

conor isnt bob dylan he’s conor oberst haters

shut it | 10/14/2009, 9:59 pm EST

yeah Haters. Are you out there doing anything creative,or just complaing about other people. Yawn.

Steve! | 10/18/2009, 6:22 pm EST

You know what, who cares about their comparison to bob dylan? I think its a decent album put out by musicians of comparable skill and reputation.

afafd | 10/25/2009, 8:04 am EST

conor is more than talented, he is an archetype

conor oberst monsters of folk | 10/26/2009, 1:20 pm EST

why you would not want to be compared to a super group like traveling wilburys your nuts its a complement…and to make fun of a music icon like clapton is wrong…clapton has forgotten more then you will never know about music…get a clue its the old guys who give the young guys a chance to make a living…awake up

Josh Homme | 11/13/2009, 11:57 pm EST

They all have their strong points, Oberst is the most clever lyricist of the three, M. has his warm vocal style, and is an exteremely talented guitarist and writer. Jim is a force of nature with his singing, which brings new life to any song he graces. He is the most energetic and passionate of the three in a live setting, the other too are shy. His guitar playing isnt clean, but its powerful

Josh Homme | 11/13/2009, 11:58 pm EST

Mogis is a genius, also
