With Phish roughly five hours away from their first of two headlining sets at the Bonnaroo Festival in Manchester, Tennessee, this week’s Flashback finds guitarist Trey Anastasio and bassist Mike Gordon talking to MTV backstage at the 1992 H.O.R.D.E. Festival about the genesis of the Vermont jam band, replacing their second guitarist with keyboardist Page McConnell and how then-MTV News host Tabitha Soren was front-page news in their native state. Also, like the band’s half-hour long jams, Mike Gordon’s fluorescent yellow shirt is incredibly mesmerizing. Rock Daily is down at the ‘Roo all weekend, so keep checking back for more on Phish, Springsteen, David Byrne and all the other highlights direct from the fest.
Bonus Flashback: Even though they performed “Destiny Unbound” at Fenway in May, it’s still a track Phish rarely bust out (it’s only been played twice in the last 17 years), so here’s hoping the ‘Roo is destined to hear it again. Check out the band’s performance of the song at a 1991 Ithaca, New York gig after the jump:
